I grew up near here and this was always our go-to celebratory place. Birthdays, anniversaries, even Thanksgiving. I don't know what to say about this except.... it's amazing. Last year I went to Europe for 6 weeks and all I wanted when I returned to the US through Boston was Beverly Depot. This place may not be the fanciest or nicest, but for reasonably-priced food that is exceptional quality in a really classy atmosphere, you can't beat Beverly Depot. Though I live in LA now, this place will always hold a very special place in my heart. In my opinion, don't bother getting anything except the prime rib. Yeah, other stuff is good there, but this place is known for their prime rib, and it is really darn special. Prime rib is my favorite food, and I've had it all over this country and even as far away as Italy, and that at the Beverly Depot (and its sister establishments) is far and away the best. I mean, they age their own beef. It's actually affordable, and in my 20+ years of going to this place at least once a year, their prices haven't even gone up that much. There is no need to pay for the extra fancy sides. Grab some bacon and cheese from the AMAZING salad bar and kick up your own baked potato if you want. The "lighter side" entrees are nice because you still get the salad bar but also the great meat. Go here, and get prime rib. It's literally to die for. Going here will make you'll young again. That's because everyone else there is not so young. and I'm no spring chicken myself. I mean, I'm not retired or in a walker or anything, but born at the tail end of the baby boom. So most of the folks there were from the greatest generation. I brought my Dad out for dinner here last night. We got the crab stuffed mushrooms for an app, lobster casserole, prime rib special, and baked stuffed shrimp with a prime sirloin and can't forget the salad bar which is my FAVORITE. The food was amazing as always! The staff is always excellent, but we had a really nice woman named Michelle that was always checking in with us to see if we needed anything, she was very outgoing and made our dining experience that much better! A decent meal, not-so-great service and cool atmosphere. The highlight was the salad bar! Most people in our party enjoyed their meals, but no one was raving. I had steak, which was good, just not great. Salad bar is awesome! They have all fresh, diverse ingredients with fresh bread and cheese. The service is odd. Our server didn't seem to care about providing good service and was inconsistent with timing. He had no personality at all. The restaurant is inside the old train station, which is a cool, novelty thing. It's dark, but a nice atmosphere. It's a large dining room (can't speak to the tavern side) so I'm sure if it was busy (only a few parties the night we dined) it could get noisy, but that night was fairly quiet. read more

Like some of the other reviewers, I grew up in Beverly where "The Depot" was the fancy place we'd go to growing up for a special meal. Although the food is good, the menu hasn't changed in 15-20 years. Same old boring cuts of meat and/or fish. The now cliche open salad bar is still charming, somehow. Over the years, it's gone from formal to casual. The waitstaff used to wear conductor overalls and caps, but now don neat plain black slacks and shirts. The restaurant itself is still ambient and charming, a nice place to bring a date or have a special meal once or twice a year, but just don't expect anything new or groundbreaking on that menu :) No matter what you do, however, do not forget to leave some room for desert.... the Fried Ice Cream is the best I've ever had. /salivate read more

I've been going here for ages, spent many birthdays getting a special birthday dinner here. This isn't my favorite place, not by a longshot, but the Beverly Depot never disappoints. It is one of those places that remains the same year after year. Never have bad service, never slow, the food is always good, and while it is pricey, you deal with it. If you want a cheap steak go to a 99 Restaurant. This place is all about the steak. Prime rib is the best around, but my favorite is the Steak Au Poive. This is just to die for. Salad bar is pretty basic, but they rotate the stuff often, so it is fresh. The cheese and bread at the end kicks ass. They have all sorts of cool drink concoctions to choose from and the desserts are sinful. It is almost unfair to have such desserts after a gutbusting meal. This is one of those once in a while places for me. I generally reserve it for something like a birthday (eat for half price too, I think) or when a group wants a decent meal out. From what I hear on the pub side of things, the place is ok, the service lacks unless you're a regular. I don't go over there on the rare occasions that I do go to the Depot, but I figured I'd throw that in there. As far as Beverly goes, this is as good as it gets. read more

I first went here a few months ago with my brother and sister-in-law. I was very impressed with the food and service. I went back on Thanksgiving Day. I was able to get a reservation in the early afternoon. I again chose the pork chops. The portions are HUGE! 2 GIANT, and I do mean giant being at least 6-inch thick pork chops in a wonderful maple honey mustard sauce, garlic mashed potatoes were also great, with the garlic not overwhelming. Again, the portions are huge! I had enough for an entire meal the next day! The REAL reason I keep coming back? *drools* Oh.My.Gawd, the desserts! I had been craving fried ice cream for quite awhile. When I went with my bro and SIL? I finally satisfied that craving. Me and SIL decided to order 2 things we both were drooling over to share with each other: the fried ice cream and something entirely new for me: white chocolate creme brulee. Our men were positively giggling their butts off at us both as we practically orgasmed in our seats while sharing both. For thanksgiving? I again had the white chocolate creme brulee there...and I was an oinker and brought home for later the chocolate mousse layer cake. Once again? Simply devine. HIGHLY recommend this place. Once again the Beverly Depot hits it out of the park. Went there with my boyfriend last night and got the lobster casserole and the crab stuffed haddock... AMAZING! Had the calamari as an appetizer AND obviously got the salad bar so we weren't able to get dessert we were so full. (We wish we weren't though! We saw an apple crisp come out that looked so good!) This place has a great atmosphere, great prices, it's a plus that you don't pay extra for the sides like a lot of upscale steak places, and it just feels like you're at home in front of the fire place. I've been to the Depot several times now and each time they have failed to disappoint. The food and service have always been consistently good each time I've gone whether out for a nice dinner in the dining room or something more casual in the bar area. Cocktails are generous and very reasonably priced. I think the martinis are all under $9. Try the blueberry martini, it's BERRY good. In fact, it's so good it BLUE my mind. Ha ha! Oh wait, you're not laughing. (Stop trying so hard, Tom.) Last time I went I ate in the bar and had the Iowa Hawkeye, which was sliced sirloin served on top of French bread with garlic butter and choice of side. Sumptuous and a good value at something like $10.95. Why go to a place like Crapplebee's when you can much better food in a much better atmosphere for the same money? I've had steak here in the dining room as well, which was wonderful. I have a lot of confidence in a a restaurant that's willing to serve their steaks Pittsburgh style, that is, black on the outside and raw inside. The only entree I wasn't completely thrilled with was the crab stuffed scrod. Not a bad dish, just lacking in flavor somehow for me. Oh yes, and I love the salad bar! There just aren't enough of these around anymore. The atmosphere is classy but casual. There's no need to get dressed up, but if you did, you wouldn't feel out of place. It's a good place for a date, although it can get rather noisy. It is a working train station, afterall. Being so easily accessible via commuter rail, some of you die-hard "I never leave Boston because Boston is the center of the universe and everything that's not in Boston sucks" types might even find a reason to leave town for an evening out. read more

Sat at the bar and had an absolute perfect blue cheese burger and fries with a few glasses of wine. Can't believe I have been living on the North Shore this long and have not tried this establishment before this weekend. I am really glad I finally got here. The waitstaff were very nice and attentive, plus they helped me choose my meal. But got to tell ya, the portions are scrumptiously huge! I had the Chicken Florentine w/garlic mashed and wow do they know how to make it right! the pastry shell was buttery good, the chicken was moist and the spinach & mushroom inside was wonderfully mixed and flavorful. And the garlic mashed was divine- nicely mashed, seasoned w/nice bits of garlic inside. Yummmm!!! The food was a bit on the spendy side ($20 - $30 a plate), but it's good food and as I mentioned the portions are big. The salad bar was quite the nice surprise- At first I didn't think there was much to it (lettuce, cukes, tomatoes, onions, pepperocini's, etc) but there was also a huge hunk of cheese and bread to be sliced and enjoyed w/the salad. It was a nice surprise. It's an old train station, so the room is big, cavernous and brick. It's pretty cool and would be great to hear music in. I have been eating here since I was a kid. This is hands down my favorite restaurant ever. I have never ever ever gotten a bad meal here. I love everything about it. The unlimited salad bar with bread and cheese. The entrees - everything is always cooked exactly how I like it. Everything, and this is even during my "i only eat chicken" phase during elementary school. The Staff - always friendly and fun. They sing to you if they know its your birthday! The desserts - never a disappointment. The space itself is HUGE and they cater. Parking is never a problem either. You should eat here. read more

I hate leaving bad reviews and I put this off for about a week and a half. I'm pretty fair and understand that things happen, I'm a cook at one of the north shores best restaurants and I used to work at Ruth's Chris steak house so I'm pretty sure I'm qualified for this one. Was in the area and wanted a steak, and I haven't been to the depot in years, so i brought my friend to treat as it was my day off. I had no problem going there on a wendsday as it was dead. I like quiet, seating was prompt and the waiter was fast to take my drink order. This is when it goes down hill. After I asked my server for a glass of Shiraz, he had informed me that they didn't have any which is fine but please don't mumble "mr. fancy pants wants a Shiraz". I was wearing jeans and a t. My friend ordered a orange cream martini, which was separated and she did not drink. I did not take part in their $20 deal, as I saw things on the menu I was looking very forward to like the beef Wellington app. That was a failure. This is where my work experience pays off: I just so happen to work grill, that's my station. My wellingtons consisted of puff pasty that was a little bit over cooked, some fatty scraps that were used for the tenderloin, and over cooked bacon. That's fine, some times things happen. I ordered a 8 oz fillet that was a little bit over my temp but nothing to really complain about. This is the part worth reading: my friend got some type of chicken and literally had two bites and vomited every where. She couldn't blame the drink as she didn't drink it the server was mortified, and this is the reason for the review: there was vomit all on the table, vomit in her food and this guy blatantly asked me "do you want to take any of this home"? Seriously? Now I paid over 100 bucks for a half assed meal with out the management trying to make things right. I guess next time I want a steak I should go to pellana or something. It might be great for the old people trying to save a buck on their 20 special but not for some one who was expecting just a little bit more from some where I used to love. A really unique atmosphere. I was really impressed with how cozy they were able to make such a random place. It is just a very warm place to hang out and grab a drink. The food was good, though I felt a little overpriced. I got a salad bar and it was $12; a little much since the salad bar wasn't anything special. The service was also a little slow, but they had one waitress for a bar full of people. Not really her fault, but a little speedier would of been kind of nice. Overall, I really did like this place. The Beverly Depot is my favorite restaurant to go to for a special occasion. I have eaten here many times. I love the old railroad station with the trains rumbling by! My last visit, to celebrate my 70'th birthday, was this past week. We had made a reservation and were seated immediately. Our wait staff was very attentive and helpful. My water glass never emptied! The salad bar was great and contained everything I could ask for. The greens were fresh and crisp. We ordered the broiled scallops and salmon. Our three dinners were delicious and cooked to perfection! My dessert was wonderful apple crisp with ice cream and a birthday candle! It was a lovely meal! This is a great restaurant for a romantic dinner. I love the ambiance of this place! I love steak, so even though this place is on the pricey side, it is definitely WELL WORTH the extra money! Not a seafood eater, so the only thing I have really had here is beef. The tenderloin medallions are my favorite, and the french onion soup is absolutely amazing. They have a wonderful salad bar with fresh cheese and baked breads. This has always been a great date place for my fiance and I. The old train depot is an excellent backdrop for a restaurant and whether you sit in the dining room or the bar, it's always a good time. The seats in the bar are not very comfortable, and could use some upgrading, and the dining room is a little worn (but it is an old train depot, so I guess that's to be expected). This is the go-to place we always think of for celebrations in our family. For quality steaks, this is a great option on the north shore. You're going to pay a lot of money for them, but they're always top-notch. Drinks are on the expensive side, and the bartenders are attentive and talented. The salad bar has dropped a little in quality over the years, but its still one of the best around. All in all, a good time in a unique environment, with excellent food. A truly tough 2 hours. Slow service (but polite), good salad bar, cold steak, and 1 of the meals had to be sent back twice...and we're not overly picky. A steak house should know how to cook a steak...and if given a second chance and still can't get it right maybe the people in the kitchen should become plumbers, accountants....or anything that doesn't involve the cooking or preparation of food. Another waitress brought the dessert but it was stone cold. That waitress took it back to the kitchen. As we were waiting for the return of the dessert our original waitress came with the bill not noticing we hadn't had our dessert. I'll admit that a big part of the appeal of this place for me is the fact that it is located within an old train station. You literally feel like you've stepped back in time when you enter this building, and it's hard not to feel like a part of history. I have only eaten upstairs in the pub style restaurant, since the downstairs seemed a little formal for myself and my friend at the time. My burger was really good and we received very prompt service by a friendly server. Again, I do admit the location of this place was a huge plus for me. I love historic buildings, and this was one of the nicer restoration jobs that I have seen. It was also cool have the people and the trains coming and going. I really thought that atmosphere was great since it is set in an old train station and they really did a good job imo of keeping up the old school feel of a "salon". The server asked if it was anyone's birthday and it was my girlfriends and she got half off her entree! Salad Bar was excellent and all you can eat and the bread was great as well. We were visiting our friend Matt in Salem and were looking for a "pub" type of place for dinner. We pulled up Yelp on the iPhone and the Droid and Beverly Depot was pretty highly rated in this category. The atmosphere was really good, I loved the building, but who lights a fire when it is 100 degrees outside? Also, very much not a pub. The food was good (I just finished my leftovers) and plentiful. I had chicken with crab, asparagus, and hollandaise and of course the salad bar. The other boys had steaks (Matt's came with scallops). They had no complaints, except that the scallops were clearly bay scallops and not sea scallops as advertised. In my opinion, it would be a good venue for a business dinner. read more

VERY disappointed, I took my wife for her birthday to The Beverly Depot had 7 pm reservations on May 13 the restaurant was busy we were seated right away ordered wine then we ordered our meal went to the salad bar and while eating our salad our appetizers were delivered and on a small two seat table very difficult to find room for all the plates finished our salad and started on the appetizers while eating the appetizers our main course was delivered again table space and the time was 7:45 pm in 45 minutes we were served a 3 course meal. I have had a more leisurely meal at McDonald's. I have a history with the Depot and this by far was my WORST experience. For the money you spend here I expect much better treatment. read more

Save your money and eat BEFORE or AFTER you come here for drinks. The food is pretty pricey, and not inspired in any way. The steaks were simply okay. We have much better luck cooking them ourselves. The baked fish was dry, and the famous "salad bar" has about 5 things available. How is that a salad bar??? As for drinks - the bar side is beautiful inside with old brick walls and wood. The Beverly Depot is a staple in our restaurant rotation. My husband and I frequent the bar side and are welcomed as return guests. I always get the salad bar, it is fresh, clean and well stocked. The wine list is diverse and fairly priced. There is a pub menu offered for bar patrons that is composed a traditional pub fair as well as some nicer dinner items- I have ordered many things off the pub menu and have never been disappointed. read more

We had Thanksgiving dinner at the Beverly Depot this year. I have one complaint: it was very busy and noisy but this was a depot and still has that train depot feel to it - the acoustics are affected by the very high ceilings. Our table for two was right by the window so that we had a good view of the tracks. I can imagine that a train arriving would only add to the level of noise. I don't think this can be helped without changing the very interesting authentic environment of a place that is still a working train depot! Everything else was more than fine. Our reservations were honored and we were seated right away. Our waitress brought our drinks promptly. The fried calmari appetizer was perhaps the weakest component of our meal - it was not light and crispy but had a crunchy texture I'm not used to in that dish. Everything else was very good. Our wine was delivered to the table quickly, the salad bar was orderly for such a big crowd, and our entrees came quickly. A word about my traditional turkey dinner: it was as delicious, probably the best Thanksgiving turkey I've had in a restaurant. The meat was plump and flavorful. There was plenty of food, although if this were a meal cooked at home, there would be many more sides. No matter - I enjoyed the turkey entree and probably couldn't have done better cooking at home! This was a holiday and the restaurant was crowded with diners. There is no way it would be a leisurely intimate meal. It filled all my requirements: good food, good drink, no cleanup, no leftovers! That's a no-fuss holiday experience. I am surprised to read so many negative reviews here. It seems the biggest problem is inexperienced wait staff and management trying to deal with that. Perhaps it will improve. In our case, for our meal, the waitress was efficient and personable and VERY busy. Had a reservation for six July 3rd at 7pm. When we arrived a man was trying to find a reservation for the couple in front of us. He could not find their reservation but seated them anyway. He then could not find our reservation and searched a back room. He could not understand that the restaurant was empty and he could have just set us a table, instead he wanted to know who took the reservation and making a fool of himself. We left in angered an went to the sister restaurant, the Hardcover and all was great. We are local to the area and will never return to the Depot. read more

Last night was our second time dining at the Depot. Our first dinner was about 3 weeks prior and had an absolute amazing experience on a Saturday evening around 4:30pm, and in having that I asked my boyfriend to bring me for my birthday last night. Now I am writing this review because I was unable to obtain anyone's attention last night to speak to about our less than ok time in the restaurant. We were greeted kindly and sat very quickly as we had a reservation at 7:30pm, the older gentleman was kind and gracious. That was about the only good part of the night. We were approached by a wait staff whom I have no idea her name as she didnt provide it, she filled our waters and seemed to be lacking any energy towards us as patrons. A soda was brought to us and she took our orders in hasty manner, and told us we can get salad. Understanding it being the end of the evening, but the salad bar was in disarray. Multiple mixing of vegetables and salad mix strewn across the bar and 2 dressing handles dunked in the dressing. Bread and cheese was good, and when asked butter was brought to the table. Then our meals were delivered, my boyfriend got baked haddock which smelled and looked amazing, and I ordered beef wellington. I had been waiting on this ALL DAY! I cut open the puff pastry and into the meet cutting it in half and was shocked to see that the meat almost 80% through was still RARE. I waited a moment to make sure it wasnt the lighting and turned my plate and asked my boyfriend to check and he was just as shocked as i was. I waited a few more minutes to see if the waitress would return to check on us. She did not, so I then stopped the first wait staff that walked by us and asked in her opinion if this was normal when i asked for the steak to be cooked medium, she said no and took my food away. I even told her that if they could cook it right using the same portion please do so. No one came to explain how long it would be or to even apologize. Eventually my boyfriend needed to start eating because his food was getting cold. about 15 minutes passed and my dish was brought back and i was asked to cut into it to see if it was cooked to my liking. I cut into the beef wellington that was the same as the first, and it did look cooked. It was cooked but the puff pastry now hard, and a dark brown, and the meat was now dry. I picked as it wasnt at all what I had been craving for all day. Eventually some time after my food was brought out and we sat there drinks empty she filled our waters and said she would bring another pepsi. She walked away and that's when my boyfriend saw a big piece of brown wilted lettuce in his water glass. We waited until she returned a few minutes later with my soda and he said something, she chuckled and said sorry and took it away and brought back another water. Not sure if she used a new cup or not but he wasnt thrilled to drink out of that glass. Finally I asked for a box and we ordered dessert praying it was going to be good. It was absolutely delicious, we both ordered the apple crisp which is a very generous helping. We paid and we left. I am writing this review in hopes that management sees it and works on their weekly staff. We were deeply upset with the lack of service we received as well as the lack of care put towards the error in my meal. read more

I am writing this review fresh from a very disappointing dinner there this past Saturday February 12th. In short- the service is deplorable and the food not edible. My husband and I went in for dinner with another couple, we arrived at 7pm (without reservations- 1st mistake) we were told the wait would be about an hour, and we were directed toward the bar- which was fine with us. We were lucky enough to grab a high top, and settled in for a few beverages and ordered an appetizer- the wine & the mozzarella and tomato salad was the only positive from the entire evening. Our waitress in the bar was wonderful as well- I am sorry I cannot remember her name- but she was fantastic, attentive, and friendly. In fact it was our waitress that pointed out that we had still not been called for a table at 8:30, so she went to check and was informed that the hostess had "forgot about us" although our name was clearly written on the list in front of her. So around 8:45 we finally get seated in the basement, which reminded me of The Crypt in the US Capitol Building! We were seated in the corner, against the freezing, drafty stone walls, right beneath an A/C unit that was blowing a draft right on our table. Then we sat there for ten minutes before our waitress, Liz, finally decided to show up, with the attitude that we were inconveniencing her somehow? Seriously, she did not look one of us in the eye and couldn't be bothered to ask us if we needed drinks, just "are we ready to order". She did not offer up any specials, or anything. My husband decided to just order the chowder as he was leery. I ordered the shrimp scampi appetizer with a side of asparagus & mashed potatoes. Our friends both ordered entrees, one the Prime Rib rare, and the other a stuffed fish entrée. Their meals came with the salad bar, which was ok, but looked a bit messy and very low on a number of vegetables. The cheese looked scary so we passed on that altogether. The dressing section was just plain disgusting. So around 9:45 we start getting pissed that we have not received our meals yet- WTF? Our waitress is nowhere to be found, so we flag over this other waiter and he says he will try to find out where our food and waitress are. A few minutes later he appears with our food- still no Liz. Then we all discover that ALL of our meals are cold. Not warm, not hot- but COLD. Now we are beyond pissed. My shrimp scampi looks like someone took a flame torch to the top of it and burned all of the garlic to a very bad black color. Seriously- they served it that way and it was COLD. The Asparagus was cold and limp, and the hollandaise tasted like yellow goo without any flavor. No mashed potatoes- they forgot those- but upon request they showed up and they were actually warm, but unfortunately had no flavor. Since we had no bread/butte offered to us I was unable to even improve them with butter. The chowder- cold- husband did not eat it. The Prime Rib was cold, as was the fish entrée. Did our waitress return to check on us or if we were happy with our meals? No, of course not, she never returned to the table at all in fact. We flagged down the waiter again and advised him of our dissatisfaction and he stood there blankly, so my friend basically told him to take the Prime Rib and shove it, thereby ending our dinner. The waiter took the Prime Rib off the bill after much debate, as he tried telling my friend his Prime Rib was not supposed to be warm since it was rare- seriously how ridiculous is that? So the waiter never even bothered to apologize and the manager never bothered to take the time to approach us either. Very bad business practice. At any rate, the best part of our night was in the bar having wine and appetizers, everything else hence forth was just plain horrible. I was very disappointed and will not be returning, and so far I have told every single solitary person I can about our bad experience there, and they will tell their friends, and their friends will tell theirs and so on. Don't waste your time, energy or money on the Beverly Depot; they obviously do not understand the meaning of customer service or the value of a customer. read more

This used to be one of my favorite restaurants on the north shore . Have not Ben in a while. Tonight it took the waitress 10 min to acknowledge us. Food took for ever and it was 100 degrees in there. Plus it's 8 o'clock and dinning room is empty speaks volumes... read more

5 PM, place is empty except for 3 tables....rude and miserable hostess tells me she can't seat us...."go in the bar and eat" she says with an attitude. I say "no way"......Never again will i step foot in there. Business must be great guys to turn away a party of four....you lost a customer for good with that nonsense and piss poor attitude. read more
