I had asked for a new chain because I thought I might as well get it done while getting my axel repaired as I had put over 1000 miles on it... but he told me it was in good shape. It has been impossible for me to get my bike serviced since the pandemic began. Every shop I reached out to was not accepting repairs, or told me it would be a 2 week wait. I stumbled upon the Bicycle Work Shop and they have been so helpful with a speedy turnaround time. First time I went in I was a bit skeptical but the 2 guys that work there are very friendly, and have been able to service my bike multiple times usually with a same day or next day pick up. I've gotten my wheels trued, hub and headset bearings repacked, hydraulic disc brakes services, all in a timely manner with informative and cheerful customer service. Great local shop. read more

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME! Don't go there! Super unprofessional. I went this morning (08/31/2020) to get my new bike wheels aligned and the guy on charge was so rude. Refuse to talk to me in spanish, even thought I heard him talking in spanish to somebody else minutes before. He didn't answer my questions about prices and it seems like he didn't even know how to fix it, blaming it to the brand new tires . Ridiculous . This place is a joke, they have no idea about bikes. I have been dealing with Victor for over 15 years , bought a Dahon folder from him, and had him work on my "fleet" of uprights and 'bents over the years. He knows his stuff and does quality work. Some people find him on the expensive side, but I'd rather get it done once than have to redo it. You do get what you pay for. read more

I would like to tell everyone how awesome this bike shop is. I had my bike tuned up and a tire repaired by Jesus. I don't think it has been tuned up in a long time. But I was not prepared for how amazing my bike looked. When I brought it in, it was dirty and definitely needed a cleaning. I picked up the bike today from Jesus and was completely surprised by how great my bike looked. When I got it home I took it out for a long ride on the strand and it rode like a charm. I have an inexpensive but cool iPed bike that i love and use to get to and from work. I had an issue with the pedal crank. Took it to the nice guys (and gals) at Helen's and they couldn't fix it. Same thing with the nice folks at Cynergy. But the repair guy at Cynergy recommended i take it to the people at The Bicycle Workshop on Ocean Park. I popped in with my bike (and fully expected to be looking a $60+ bill if i needed a new crank) and the guy who owns the place could not have been nicer. My bike was ready the same day and it cost me $20 service fee along with a $1.35 part. That was it! He could have hit me up for $40 and i wouldn't have known the difference. So, i say Kudos to this bike shop for their efficiency, expertise, honesty and especially their price. Also, Kudos to the other shops for recommending the Bike Workshop. That was a month ago and my bike (and wallet) are better for it. read more

This place used to be good (about a decade ago), but their latest bike tech is a complete, utter jerk. He ignores customers when they arrive, and acts like he is doing you a favor by taking your business. That would be bad enough, but he is also super-arrogant and doesn't know jack about what he is doing. I had so many flats in the last year, but they never could figure out what was going wrong. They finally sold me on a "complete solution" that my biking friend couldn't believe they did to my bike. It also failed the first time I took my bike out. Very friendly place. Specializes in recumbent bikes. Word on the street (literally, its on their banner) is that they teach maintenance classes. I inquired about this and the owner said that if demand was there, they teach classes in the fall. My front derailleur cable finally snapped while I was out riding today, and luckily I wasn't too far from this place. I rode in, and the guy was helping someone else: something had broken on her bike light, and it wasn't staying in place. He suggested a way to fix it with glue, did so, and didn't charge her anything. As soon as she rode out, he attended to me, and started on my bike immediately. Less than twenty minutes and about $20 later, it was done, and my gears were once again shifting perfectly. read more

After a biking accident, another shop (Helen's, also in SM) told me that my front fork was bent and that I'd need a new one. I decided to get a second opinion. The guys at The Bicycle Workshop seemed to be pretty professional (as in they knew what they were doing) and told me that a new fork wasn't necessary. The honesty is refreshing. This is a genuine review from a 6 year repeat customer, 98% satisfied. Victor is the man to turn to. If you are looking for hard-core, old school, honest advice on unusual problems, this is the place. If he can't do it, he'll send you where it can be done. If he's not sure, he'll figure it out. If he doesn't know, he will say "I just don't know", rather than glad-hand you and tell you something to appease your desires. Some people call him 'grumpy', but if a bicycle mechanics expert is not grumpy, he's probably trying to sell you something you don't want. It's the nature of the art. If you don't care whether it's done right, don't waste his time. Save your little questions for the mainstream shops, or look it up on the internets. I've tasked a lot of different bike shops in the area, and it's definitely refreshing to find someone who does the work for sheer love of the bicycle. I would never waste his time patching a flat. Would you ask a physicist to make your morning toast? Maybe if she's your mom. You've gotta figure that one out for yourself, kids. read more

You only need to see the Penny Farthing on the roof of the building to know that this place is amazing! It's a bare bones bike repair shop. Though they sell a few regular bikes, they specialize in recumbent bicycles and repair more than selling to the general public. This is a shop for bicycle lovers and riders. Also, the staff is knowledgeable and get pay plus benefits. They stock the most practical lights, the nicest pedals, the most obscure cleat covers, and the most complicated bike tools. It's a tiny store but they offer just the right selection for the practical rider. The only thing not so practical is that penny farthing. read more

I'm not sure where all the hate coming from with this shop. What it is: This place is primarily a service shop for all bicyclists and the only place on the Westside to buy a recumbent. If you have biomechanical issues like knee or back pains, want cycling-specific shoe inserts and other professional fit services, he's your guy. His service is very thorough and consistently excellent. If something is not right with the service, he's on it. I've only had that happen once in all of the years I've gone. He's not expensive. I'm not sure where this bit of fiction comes from, but his work and parts quality are way better than the REI, Performance, and Helen's sausage factories. i took in my 1980s schwinn road bike for a serious tune up. all the junk on the LA streets had really mucked it up. I also had to replace my rear derailleur as it was the original and had become totally unreliable, bent up, and bit dangerous. i also had a problem with my shifter. it wasn't holding certain gears in place as it had become stripped inside. i bought a used shifter exactly like my original for about $2 at Bikrowave on Venice Blvd but hadn't gotten around to installing it yet. All in all, The Bicycle Workshop kindly did all the repairs for me and installed a sweet new rear derailleur that purrs when i ride. And most of all, they were timely, and easy to talk to, as i like to ask questions about the process, so I better understand my bike and how to take care of it in the future. It ran me about $140, which is the most i've ever paid for bike repairs. but hell, my bike really needed a bit of investment for how much i ride it. and i haven't had an problems since. this was about 3 months ago. read more

Victor (owner/operator) is a legend among bicyclists and bike shop owners in the LA area. He was building recumbents before big companies were manufacturing them. I bought mine from him and he's been great about helping me maintain it (even gives advice on the phone when I'm out of town). Victor is a careful man: He won't sugar coat his advice or give you a low-ball estimate. He also won't let you go out and test drive one of his recumbents unless you read through a little assignment about how recumbents work, then come back later telling him you understand they can be quirky. I agree strongly with Paula G. about this being the kind of place that makes you feel good to patronize it. It's run by a true craftsman, who doesn't BS you. And his honesty extends to not always disguising his feelings... If he's busy, he can be abrupt. But that just means he's focusing on doing his work. And if he feels strongly that you are asking him to do something dumb, like repair something in a way he knows won't be safe, he'll tell you so. Yep, he can be condescending. But he's got a right to be, since us newbies often do or ask silly questions. But if you want an honest, top-quality bike sales or service person, The Bicycle Workshop is the place to go! I dealt with two different gentlemen and both were friendly, professional and efficient. The price to get a new tube/fix a flat on my first visit was very reasonable and I waited for less than 5 minutes. I have a 70's original Schwinn - ride it everywhere. I had 3 issues - he heard only 2, because he is so smart. This guy does not listen, tried to sell me cheap replacement parts (saying the originals were not fixable) and also forgot to fill the air in my tire (the replacement tire was the only issue I let him fix). When I came back 3 minutes later for air - he didn't even realize "he" was the problem; assumed I came back for something else and tried to rib me about it. He was totally embarrassed when he realized he sent me on my way with no air and then tried to discuss where I could possibly get the original parts fixed. WTF. Will never go back. read more

My fiancée and I love this place! It's our favorite bike shop in Santa Monica. Ok, it's the only one that we have been there but we love it! The owner is such a thoughtful person, who provides outstanding work at very reasonable prices. He fixed the brakes on my fiancées cruiser. The repair was done in a few days and she even got her bell replaced. This shop is old school, receipts are written out by hand, which is cool! He does take credit cards and there is nice selection of used bikes that he completely refurbishes. He does have a smaller selection of newer bikes and accessories. My Dahon folding bike has been commuting with me from NYC to Seattle to Tokyo and back home to L.A. It's the cornerstone of my bike stable and the oldest bike I own. Victor at Bicycle Workshop saved her from the scrap heap. You know how fixing one problem on an old bike is often a Pandora's Box of problems? That's what happened here after a chain derailment lead to 3 broken spokes. Victor just about drove himself mad trying to save me from a whole new wheel set with some pretty clever mechanics, but a few thousand miles had taken there toll and it was unavoidable. That said, I really appreciated all the effort that went into trying to save me a few bucks. I can't recommend this shop enough and if you are thinking about a folding set up, I can't recommend that enough either! Bike Workshop is a great place to pick one up or at least test drive one. Victor is a great resource on folders and any folder question you might have. Great guy, great shop. They also carry all the standard parts and accessories you may need for any kind of bike or level of riding. read more
