I found this place when I moved to the beach a couple months ago and needed my antique schwinn bike to be worked on, I told him what I wanted. The service was quick, he polished my bike and made it look brand new again. I took it back again today to add a basket and a bell and fix my tires. He polished it and made it look beautiful again! If I could give him negative stars as a rating I would. Please please please stay away from this place! He will scam you and sell you poor quality bikes/parts!!! I went in about 2 years ago asking for a good road bike. He sold me a bike that he 'fixed up'. After my first ride I got a flat tire and it turned out the he sold me an online bike, he put tubes in the tires that were too big and needed replacing, the tires also needed replacing, the gears didn't switch properly, both front and back brake pads were worn down and needed replacing. He pretty much took every cheap part he had and put that on the bike then gave me some bulls**t about how the bike was in great condition after he fixed it. He knew I didn't know anything about bikes so he maliciously effed me over. Don't go there!!! Do NOT GO there!!!! read more

this is an amazing place if you need any sort of bike work done. I had my bike completely overhauled to like new condition, including a new tube and guard put on and the cost was less than $100... I purchased 2 used bikes for my girlfriend and I from a different location. They both had rust on the chains and the pedals were almost coming off after a couple rides. I took them to The Bikesmith for a tube up and they're both riding smooth for over a month like brand new. Prior to going in here I read that the guy was rude etc... I think he's just a little socially awkward, not rude at all. Kind of like the people in IT when they fix your computer. He was very detailed and knows his stuff and although I spent maybe 9 bucks he spent a while answering my questions and giving me suggestions. Not only did he fix the broken part on my bike (for $20, which was a steal in the first place compared to other shops), but when I came to pick up the bike, he had also cleaned the whole thing, re-routed my wires for better efficiency, and greased everything free of charge. I've recently moved to San Diego from Australia and visited in a number of bicycle stores in the area asking advice and looking for potential bikes as my only means of transport. I found Bob to be the most sincere and least 'pushy' of all the retailers. He was genuine in his advice, I even showed him a few bikes I had been looking at on Craigslist and he gave his honest opinion, letting me know if he thought the bikes were a good purchase for their year/model/condition etc. I thought this was very admirable, as he could have easily pushed to sell one of his own. I ended up purchasing a bike via Craigslist and took it back to him for a tune-up and to get some accessories (basket, lock, bell etc). He provided all items for a very reasonable price and even allowed me to store the bicycle in his shop until I had a secure place to store it myself. Bob has been in the bicycle repair business in Pacific Beach for over 30 years and is extremely deserving of this high rated review. I hear the majority of his business comes from word-of-mouth referral, as he doesn't advertise or try to compete. If you are looking for knowledgeable, highly skilled, bike-smith - for advise, repair or purchases and you want to support an original local business, make sure you pay Bob a visit! I went there on Wednesday because my tyre were flat he charged me 33 dollars to fix both and in my way back home my back tire was getting empty again so I had to stop in a gas station to fill. Really expensive and bad work. Hope you can give me a support about that. read more

Brought my bike in with brake and gear issues. He fixed them as part of a tuneup for a very reasonable price. He really went above and beyond. He fixed all kinds of things, even adding a rubber protector where my chain guard had come off. This guy does excellent work 10/10. Highly recommended. read more

I went in there just the other day after visiting Pacific Coast Bicycle. Which was nice, but was mostly filled with trendy junk for beach cruisers. Long story short, we took a stroll to the Bikesmith, and not only did he have better prices(12$ per tire vs 16$ at the other store), but he also knew of the bike. Of course it started with some conversations of reminiscing of the old Motobecane he used to own, but he also gave me some good advice on piecing the old bike back together. Not at one minute did I think he was rude though. He also, didn't try to sell me on the most expensive parts he had in the shop. He told me that I probably didn't need anything that fancy so he left me with the cheapest option he had. He deserves respect for looking out for my interest over his own wallet. read more

The owner (Bob) sold me a used wheel for $55 and a new tire for $10 and new break pads for about $10. Complete price including labor was $114. The reason why I wanted the rear wheel exchanged was that I had little bent in the bicycle wheel. After a day with the new rim, I realized that two spokes were broken and the new wheel bent was also bent (worse than the one I got replaced). I went to complain and he fixed it for no costs. After a day with the new fixed wheel, I realized that 7 more spokes broke. I went back and he wanted to charge another $48 to re-spoke the complete wheel he sold me 3 days ago! Are you kidding me? Go somewhere else! This is the worst bikeshop in PB! Complete loss that visit: $90 This is not the kind of small business the US should be built on! However, I also bought a U shaped lock with a number combination that is great but I guess I could have bought it somewhere else, too. read more

I took my bike today to Bob to fix a flat tire that my beach cruiser had. I picked Bob's place mostly because it's close to where I live and i could do double duty and take my dog along for a walk as well.Bob's shop is just the kind of local I like to patronize. It's lived in. Parts anew and old a thrown in semi-ordered chaos. I bet Bob know where it all is! Anyways, Bob was polite and kind to me and my dog and quickly changed my tire for a reasonable price while the dog and I finished his walk. horrible! bob was so rude when my grandson and i took his bike in because the chain kept coming off. then when i called to see if it was ready, he continued his rudeness, saying that i shouldn't call, that i was wasting his time. a couple of days later, he called to say the bike was ready and that it was in perfect condition. the next day, the chain was off again, but this time the chain actually came apart. when i called he said that he did what he normally does, that there must be some defect in the bike and that he would not warranty his work. i should just take it to another shop. does not even deserve the one star! read more

This place is great! The owner goes the extra mile with care and maintenance. I took in my Wal mart genesis cruiser for a tune up and he turned it into a new bike. It rides better then when I purchased it. I highly recommend the bikesmith. I've been to two other bike shops in PB and this one is by far the best. His prices are competitive and turnaround time is great. I took it in on a Wednesday & it was ready by Friday even though I told him I'd be gone till Monday. What a great experience! The friendly small business owner, Bob, has been in PB FOREVER. He's the kind who keeps inventory in his head, but knows exactly where everything is in his crowded little shop. And, if he doesn't have it, he'll get it or help you find it. I needed something for a very old Schwinn bike, that is no longer made, and in an uncommon size. He knew exactly when it stopped being produced, and why (war). One-of-a kind friendliness that is hard to find in SoCal. He knows bikes inside and out, history and all and can fix about anything, and his soiled hands tell you he does it himself, not some teeny-bopper. He'll chat with you if he has time, but he's a one-man shop so he might not drop everything to fix your bike ASAP... there may be jobs ahead of yours. He's not a chain, so the prices are fair. He's not out to gouge anyone. I'm all for helping the small business owner succeed, and this one really deserves to! I just wish I had more bikes that needed fixing because I definitely want him to stay in business, especially with so many trendier shops with colorfull, crappy cruisers popping up by the beach. Serious bicyclists come here! And no, he doesn't do everything for free, and he's happily married so he's not flirting with the blond-beach-babes who want free stuff. There's very little room in the front of the shop (The back is where he does repairs), so park it outside. BTW- His sign hangs sideways, so currently you wont see it painted on the front... read more

VERY DISAPPOINTED! I paid $200 to this guy to get an old bike fixed and paid $30 for a new light. The light quit working on the first ride. I went back in today thinking he would just give me a replacement, but he started tinkering with it, trying to get it to work. I said can't you just give me another one? He said no. While he was tinkering, a guy came in with a bike to get adjusted, so he leaves me and my light and goes outside to take care of the other guy, while I am waiting there. Excuse me? I thought first-come should be first-served! I tried to be polite and said I would leave my light for him to work on and pick it up later, but he went back inside, picked it up, shoved it into my hand, and said roughly: 'Take it with you, if you leave it here it will land up in the trash bin.' then he walked back outside to take care of the other customer. That is not how I think a customer should be treated. If you are spending money he will be very nice, but if you have a problem, don't expect any help here..... Go somewhere else. read more
