How on earth have I never been here before??? This is my new FAVORITE breakfast place in Bellingham! My server Madelynn was fabulous! When I asked about GF (gluten free) options she was quick to help me with the menu. She was caring and helpful and did not disappoint. This place exceeded all my expectations, my wife picked this place out on Easter Sunday after church. We waited about 45 minutes, meanwhile my daughter and I were getting hangry! Well worth the wait. I had the Mexican omelette, their omelettes are on point. They are airy and just super tasty, if I had anything negative to say about the omelette it would be I would appreciate some more protein in the omelette. Their breakfast dishes usually come with their house made pancakes, they do something special to their dough (not box made) that makes these the best short stack in town. We decided to venture north this morning for the day; I've heard really great reviews about, and decided to visit The Birch Door Cafe. We were warmly greeted, and waited for under 10 minutes in an aesthetically pretty entrance waiting area that offered souvenirs and coffee. I greatly appreciate the social distancing, plexiglass parameter, and hand sanitizer. Our server Andy provided spectacular service from start to finish; he was very attentive, courteous, and offered really great suggestions. The menu and seasonal items made it very tough for all of us to make a final selection. EVERYTHING we ordered was DELICIOUS!!! It's fluffy, custardy, and sent from the Bellingham ferries astride a corgi directly to your woody table. So fly on in during a weekday and sit by the sun soaked windows. Listen to the local line crew talk about installs and outages, and hear the wait staff joke with one another. The weekends are buszzzzzy so expect a 20 to 40 minute wait if you arrive on a Saturday or Sunday at 9-11am. There is no making reservations period... Sometimes when they bring the syrup it's been freshly rinsed off and placed in a small custard cup.(Thx) But, the water gathers at the bottom and if you're not careful the water will drip on your food while you pour your syrup. Upon entering the lobby the hostess took one look at my husband's hat and just stared for an uncomfortable period of time before abruptly taking him to a table. The waitress did the exact same thing, not looking at him but his hat. At the end of an uncomfortable meal his check was unceremoniously dumped on the table without so much as a backwards glance. The hat was an old Bernie hat but that should have nothing to do with how employees treat customers. If you aren't mature enough to place your personal bias to the side and behave in an ethical and professional manner don't have a job working with the public. Plain and simple. I've heard so many good things about this place, so I knew I definitely wanted to stop by and give it a try. When we got here we were greeted right away and sat at a table. I noticed a lot of people had this delicious looking coffee at their table so I asked our waiter what it was and that we definitely wanted to try it. We found out it's called a Viennese coffee and it was amazing, so glad we ordered it! It's 2 shots of espresso, cinnamon, vanilla, and espresso whipped cream. It was delicious. Definitely order this if you are a coffee lover like me! For my entree I ordered the ham and cheddar omelette and it came with 3 pancakes. This was also amazing! The omelette was so thick and fluffy and just melted in your mouth. The pancakes were also delicious. I wish I could come here more but sadly I was visiting from out of state. Our greeting from the 2 hosts was so friendly and upbeat it started everything off so well. Our server was great and was understanding of us taking forever to catch up and not even look at the menu as it was a slower morning. We got the biscuits and gravy and the high tide omelette, which was amazingly fluffy and full of salmon and green onions, love! i wasn't expecting much-- most breakfast places don't offer very many vegan options/aren't accommodating. but the birch door cafe surprised me: while there is few options, the waitress was very friendly and told me they could make an off menu vegan hash with avocado, veggies and potatoes. i also got their vegan sausage patties. it was delicious! the sausage patties seem to be made in house and honestly have a convincing texture and flavor to meat sausage. the hash was well seasoned and the potatoes were nice and crispy. the cafe is also extremely cute. i love the decor: it's very homey/cabin like but also very posh. i can see why there was a huge line at the door for brunch at 8am! i will definitely visit again when i'm back in the area read more

Absolutely amazing. The atmosphere is unique and stunning. The staff are incredibly friendly. And the food is to die for. Selection is akin to most diners, with the potion to match. Almost every entrée comes with a side of 3 pancakes; so come ready to eat. I had their smoked salmon omelet which was super rich due to the sour cream that was whipped into the omelet. However I think I preferred my wife's California eggs benedict. The hollandaise sauce was rich but incredibly flavorful. The English muffin is a wonderful vehicle for the rich egg yolk and hollandaise sauce while the tomato provides the perfect amount of sweetness and acidity to combat the richness. After moving from the LA area about 6 months ago, I stumbled across this place, and was met with the warmest staff, coziest ambiance, and the most delicious breakfast food. I found myself returning on a very regular basis. Whether I come here alone, or bring everybody that ever visits, to share the experience, I could not recommend this place more. I have yet, in over a dozen visits, to be disappointed with both the service and the food. I have gone on less busy weekdays to bustling weekends, and the wait is still never horrible, because they are really good at managing their tables. But even if you have a a little bit of a wait, trust me it is worth it. They have to know that they are amazing, but nevertheless, they never treat their customers. Subpar or disposably (can't say that from where I come from). All in all, I think my favorite dish there is the German pancake, but I've tried practically everything on the menu and it's all fantastic. read more

Starts with a fabulous entrance of a beautiful birch door. There's parking in the back so don't let the front mini-parking lot deter you. We had the fresh OJ, an Americano coffee, an English breakfast tea and a mocha coffee with fun whipped cream on top! All just what we needed while we waited for our orders. The Birch Door was our last stop before heading back to Seattle. We had many places we wanted to visit during our short visit to Bellingham, we didn't have enough time but knew that the Birch Door was a must-go for us no matter what. So we went and the place was packed (on a weekday!). We opened the cute birch entrance door and stood in a big spacious hall where we waited a little bit for a table to open up. They sell some cute merchs here. The interior has that vintage yet chic European feel and the ambience is homey. We ordered the German Pancake and the Blueberry Lemon Cobbler French Toast. We knew we wouldn't be able to finish them all but when our food arrived, we were still surprised by how big each plate was. Honestly.. it was enormous and the two of us would have been good and plenty of full with just ordering and sharing one dish. The German Pancake was described as light as the finest custard; however I personally felt it was too thick and not as custard-y - it was too dense for my preference. And while it was delicious and oven-baked to golden brown on the outside, I did find that it was slightly undermixed that I found lumps of flour in it. Nonetheless, the pancake had that characteristic of inviting buttery smell and came with generous fixins; the blueberry compote was simply to die for if I may add. We both love the Blueberry Lemon Cobbler French Toast more. The texture was fluffy and the flavor was just perfect between the tartness from the creamy lemon curd, the berry goodness from the blueberry syrup and the fresh blueberries, combined with the mountain serving of whipped cream and the nutty oat cobbler. Certainly satisfying to the tastebuds. I recommend the Blueberry Lemon Cobbler French Toast over the german pancake. We couldn't finish even half of it and had to get both boxed to go. Service was fast and all around great. Everyone was friendly and warm. Must be a lot of people's birthdays on the day of our visit too, the staff came around to several tables to sing the special birthday song (not the standard American Happy Birthday song, it was a different tune) and cheered.
