We discovered this place quite by accident while walking to Fells Point. The front door was propped open and that caught our attention. We had the Greek Week menu and enjoyed the selections. A bit less salt would have been appreciated but everything was otherwise fresh and tasty. It was lunch time and the restaurant was not too busy so there was only one server and she was working hard to keep up with everything. I want to give this place 3 stars because it is overpriced by about 25-35 percent on everything. The entrees are great but when every entree starts at around $30 and goes on up I expect 5 star food. Since the food was very good and fresh I will give it 4. Since it was overpriced I want to give it 3. This place is no San Francisco Kokkari or Palo Alto Evvia, but it is high end Greek cuisine. The stuffed calamari was magnificent, the black sea-bass was perfectly grilled, and the braised lamb shank was a 10. The service was so-so. The head waitress was very nice and well intentioned and the assistant waiter was so-so; things were forgotten. Basic things like forgetting to refill the bread basket after asking you if your would like it refilled. Bringing out entrees before resetting the removed silverware. Going to get lemon... and forgetting. Forgetting to refill water till the end of the meal. Basic things like that. This just pissed me off. The hell with it. 3 stars it is. Expect great food, ridiculous prices ($60-$70) per person without wine), and average (or less) service. I'll go again sometime (for the food) and give them another chance. read more

This place was very very good! You get to pick out your own fish and they debone it right in front of you! fun! We had the grouper and it was amazing. We had some greek dip with roe in it for appetizer that i highly recommend to anyone coming here. Their sides for the main dish aren't that great. Chose this place b/c my pops wanted to eat fish and special occasion (graduation). True to rumors, the waiter takes you along an optional "fish tour" where you can see their fresh catch of the day. He was fairly knowledgeable in terms of identifying the fish and describing their flavor, origins, how it would be cooked, etc. Decided to go for the turbo and Chilean seabass. For apps, we got their famed stuffed calamari. Lemme say that I've had stuffed calamari only once before at a pretty good restaurant and Black Olive's stuffed calamari blew me away. The calamari bit itself was delicious...perfectly grilled and infused with this magnificent smoky flavor. And it was stuffed with this amazing cheese mixture that wasn't too overpowering and complemented the calamari superbly. We were stoked when the fish came out. They ask if you prefer it whole vs. fillet-ed. We opted for fillet. Two waiters took the time to fillet our fish. They also pour a yummylicious house lemony sauce on top which brought out the flavors amazingly. The turbo was very sweet and had the perfect amount of firmness. The seabass wasn't quite what I expected, being softer than I thought, but still very fine (more bony than the turbo). $30/fish seems like a lot of money, but they give you the whole entire fish and cook it perfectly and serve you and boy, I think it's worth it. Like Greek food? Love seafood? Read on. This place is a GEM in Fells Point. I don't get up to Baltimore very often, but as a former Detroiter, I can appreciate Greek food in an appropriately urban (read: more authentic than DC!) setting. I would consider this a special occasion restaurant, with most entrees starting at $30 and starters/salads in the $10-15+ range. They make everything (bread, hummus, feta, desserts) in house, so it is as fresh as possible. The waitress first asked us if we would like to go over to see the night's fish selection (out in the air in the middle of the restaurant, but on ice of course). Starters: we had a platter of assorted seafood (mussels, lobstertail, clams, shrimp, stuffed calamari, octopus salad). Everything was very fresh and delicious. They are famous for their octopus salad, and I highly recommend that, even though I am somewhat squeemish seeing tentacles on the thing I am about to eat. I also had an avocado Greek salad, which was amazing (fresh, crisp, loved the house-made feta). The fish selection varies by the day. They had one or two locally-caught selections (halibut) and several delicacies (Dover sole, Chilean sea bass). Most fish is served whole, but they will filet it for you tableside just before you eat it (which is very neat to watch). I had BBQ shrimp, which was prepared perfectly with a light lemon-butter coating. Others in our party ate halibut, sea bass, Dover sole, and a soft shell crab wrapped in phyllo dough with spinach and feta, then baked (heavenly)! Everything was very well-prepared. There are few menu choices for non-fish eaters, but I did notice beef options (no one in my party got them). I wouldn't recommend this restaurant for non seafood eaters. We could barely squeeze in dessert (sampled homemade ice cream and baklava), but everything else looked amazing. In response to the comments about portion size: these are not huge portions, but you do get enough fish to become plently full. This restaurant would be a great place to go if watching weight (very healthy protein choices, not many carbs if you don't assault the bread basket, super fresh veg). Just went there tonight. From the pleasant location in historic looking Fells Point, to the decor of the admittedly small restaurant, the appearance is of a fine quality dining establishment. There is an array of fresh fish and other viands on ice behind glass near the entrance, as well as a view into the kitchen. The restaurant including the bathrooms and kitchens is rather small, though there appears to be a small garden-like area for outdoor eating during warmer months. The atmosphere is nice, the restaurant is pleasantly decorated with a touch of both elegance and the casualness of home. The waiters and waitresses were nice, attentive, and knowledgeable and there was a tour of today's fish before we ordered. Onto the food, the salad with goat cheese was amazing! The best salad I have ever had, better than the salad bar at a Brazilian steak house or traditional japanese orange salad. It was very simple in flavor(save for the incredibly melt in your mouth small circle of soft goat cheese) with green lettuce and spinach leaves and a touch of some sort of mixed dressing, and tossed so properly that each leaf has the perfect amount, at least to my taste. The Dorade Royal grilled(I believe it was grilled, they either grill or saute) whole fish was excellent. You can fillet it yourself or they will fillet it for you after showing you the fish. It took them a minute to get a fillet knife but it was easily filleted (by me) and the fish was cooked just the right amount. The flavoring was excellent and not too strong, though personally I would have preferred very very slightly less lemon. The sushi quality tuna steak was good. We ordered medium rare and it was very nice while it was hot, it cooled reasonably quickly and lost some of its flavor so it is best to eat it fast :-) It had a bit too much lemon, if the Dorade had 1/100th too much lemon, the tuna steak had 2/15th, or between 1/9th and 1/10th. The first group appetizer dish was 4 types of dip, one was roe, one was tsatsiki(spelling?), one was hummus, and one was eggplant based, plus cucumbers and 2 pieces of feta cheese. Our favorite dip by far(judging by how quickly they were finished) was the fish roe based one, but all were good. Like many Greek(and other western) restaurants, they bring out bread and olive oil. The bread here was an interesting bread with black olives baked in. I'm not sure whether I liked it or not, but one of my eating companions loved it. Also as a sort of gratis apertif they give pickled or highly seasoned olives in some aromatic olive oil, with seeds. They are nice, or at least very interesting in flavor. The price was pretty expensive, but we did come for dinner. Appetizers are around 8-10$, main dishes are late 20s- early 30s, non alcoholic drinks 1-3$ and desserts 8-9$. For three people including three drinks(one of which was rose), two fish main courses, two salads, one group appetizer plate, one single appetizer, and the flour-less hazelnut chocolate cake, it came to about 135$. At the end of the day, I would go again. Next week if it were possible. read more

I have eaten here a few times over the last couple of years. I am an itinerant boater touring on what is known as the "Loop". This is my favorite Greek Mediterranean restaurant. The stuffed calamari was fantastic. My companion had the grilled octopus appetizer and reported it was fantastic. We both had the lamb prepared in parchment over cous cous and neither of us raved, but we can report that it was well prepared but not to our tastes. The restaurant is expensive and the wine list pretentious. I always say that there are no $2000 bottles of wine , only idiots with $2000 buying a bottle of wine. What a delightful evening and meal! For starters I had the Diver scallops (and yes, they were colossal, as described on the menu) and my friend had the octopus. I took my wife here for her birthday, and this was our first time here and we really loved it! The restaurant is so cozy with the brick walls and wood floors that it feels like you are having a meal at your or some one else's house. The food was SUPER fresh and you could taste that it wasn't sitting around in storage! They have Saganaki, which only appear in fine Greek restaurants, and prepare in an open plate, so no struggling to scrape it out of a dish. They specialize in fish and what we ordered came out perfectly grilled - crispy outside and soft and juicy on the inside! They even filleted it before me and my wife, which was a blessing since she doesn't like to peel and/or de-bone food! You could even pick your own fish from their open ice box if you are the picky kind! The great part was after dessert [ that they have plenty of] when the owner took us the wine cellar that he explained was remodeled with the bricks of The Black Olive's previous location. This place takes everything that is good about Greek food (simplicity, freshness) and adds a wonderful twist. I spent several years in Greece and enjoy a good slab of moussaka as much as anyone, but in Greece, the meals you get at the most expensive restaurants are the same you'd be served at someone's house. Black Olive goes beyond. In addition to the signature two black olives (and we were offered more), the chef provided an amuse bouche of pepper and cheese puree on a cucumber slice. The melitzanasalata was smokier, more nuanced, and less creamy than the norm. The saganaki wasn't swimming in oil, the tzatziki had more of a kick and big chunks of cucumber. The perfectly seasoned fish entrees melted in our mouths, and the side of mashed potato/sweet potato brilliantly balanced sweet with salty/garlicky. The Black Olive offers an extensive Greek wine selection which includes a range of price options. The baklava ice cream (not baklava with ice cream, baklava flavored ice cream) provided a perfect ending to a wonderful meal. The atmosphere was lovely but our table was squeezed in quite close to its neighbor. All told, two appetizers, two fish entrees, two desserts, and a bottle of wine came to $140 - not bad for the amount and quality of the food, and the professional service. read more

The black olive is like stepping into a local European restaurant. The decor is beautiful, and the staff is welcoming and accommodating. Our waiter gave us a tour of the "catch of the day" display -- a wonderful array of fresh, organic fish. Our waiter also filleted the fish I ordered at our table before serving me and my fiancé. The grape leaf-wrapped sardines were to die for, and the black sea bass and lamb were exquisite. Will definitely be coming back! Service was good, food was extremely inconsistent. Things that were done well were outstanding but things that weren't were disastrous. On apps, the tuna tartare was scrumptious. The grilled calamari app was delicious. The lobster bisque came out cold, when it was sent back to be heated it returned with about a cup of hot water added to it and lobster meat removed, it was sent back. The scallops were grilled nicely but completely unseasoned and tasted only of char. Entrees, the grilled fish was delicious, one dorado and one bronzini. The monkfish was also sautéed very nicely. The real disappointment was the seafood pasta. Combination lobster, shrimp and scallops over papredelle pasta. It was supposed to be seasoned with garlic, olive oil, fresh tomatoes. The seafood portion was small, again the scallops (2) were not seasoned though the lobster meat was tasty the shrimp were just okay. The real flop was the pasta, it was so bland and flavorless it was like eating nothing. Water has more flavor.
