Food starter, long hots with some of the best meatballs around. This batch of long hots were medium hot. It was a Special but typically available. Hamburger with pork belly, slaw, fried pickles and French fries, on menu item. It was Fantastic and one of the better burgers that was cooked perfectly. Chicken and shrimp special with Alfredo sauce. Extra delicious. Had peas, spinach and broccoli all over pasta. Worth a drive, suggest reservations, depending on when you go especially Friday nights and the weekend. They have a bar area with seating and booths plus they have table seating area . Nice back room for groups or parties. Not pictured desserts. A first trip to a restaurant I have been wanting to try (one of the friends who went with me called it my "white whale") for some time, and well worth the 30 minute drive! Let's start with our server Brenda, who also handled my call to make a reservation earlier in the day. Claiming to have worked at the restaurant for 35 years-- I wondered if she started as an elementary student, she got our table started with water, drinks, and bread before going through the specials and sharing comments about her favorites. She was attentive throughout dinner, and I'd be happy to have her work my table when I return. Our party of three opted for the three Friday night specials, a thick cut pork chop, wahoo, and haddock Francaise. All of us started with salads. New England clam chowder was also an option. The greens were fresh and I liked the Italian house dressing. My choice was the haddock Francaise, sweet and tender and definitely enhanced by the lemon and capers in the sauce. It was topped with spinach and Brenda recommended the angel hair as a side. I loved the entire dish, although the ample main portion meant I barely touched my side of pasta, which was enough to have been an entree itself. My friends said their dinners were good. The wahoo was served over rice, and none was left to be boxed. The pork chop looked great, but the star of that order was the side of mashed potatoes which all three of us tasted and agreed were excellent and definitely homemade. There were a variety of desserts, and we were told that all were made in-house by three different bakers. Given the ample portions, dessert was not a priority but the choices sounded tasty. It's not a fancy place, and the vibe was casual and quite friendly. Plenty of regulars. The restaurant was busy and reservations seem a must given the line of people waiting for tables. Our reservation was for 7pm, and we waited less than five minutes to be seated after arriving to a full restaurant. I have already said I would return, and there were many dishes on the menu that looked interesting. Pricing was reasonable, with the three entrees, a bottle of wine ($32), and one cocktail costing around $45 per person. Recommended! read more

I had spotted this place when doing the Oneida Cheese Trail. After checking on Yelp I found the reviews and the menu to be excellent. Celebrating a birthday with a steak lover and since we were at Turning Stone Casino I called on a Saturday about 6:15 to see if we could get a table for two. Although it sounded busy when they answered the phone we were told 7:15. We arrived 10 minutes early were greeted right away and seated within minutes. Very busy place plenty of tables including a large round one raised slightly in one corner seats about 10, and a room off the main with more tables. Bar is good sized and seats about 14 with a separate entrance in the front. Horse pictures and oil paintings bring a cozy area themed feel since it is located a short distance past the turn to Vernon Downs Racetrack and Casino. Birthday guy ordered steak, salad, and originally mashed potatoes then decided to go with the angel hair pasta side. Not a fan of veal, I ordered the Rocco with a chicken cutlet which our sweet waitress accommodated immediately. I chose the New England Clam Chowder and we ordered the calamari with marinara as an appetizer. Yes we knew there would be leftovers. Steak was cooked perfectly as ordered although he said some seasoning would have improved the flavor even salt and pepper. Mashed were thick and creamy very good and the salad was perfect size. Small loaf of warm garlicky buttered bread was superb. Calamari was cooked tender with a panko breading sprinkled with some parm cheese and parsley and piled high with a cup of homemade marinara. The New England Clam has carrots and potatoes and plenty of clam and flavor. My Rocco was large with plenty of greens on top, a large eggplant medallion breaded and tender, same for the chicken cutlet and topped with melted mozzarella cheese. Food for days and so very good. Our waitress checked on us frequently, bringing drink refills before the first were empty. Service was 5 star! We will be back to try other menu items. No room for dessert but they had at least 7 homemade ones. read more

This restaurant is for someone that is looking for huge portion sizes. The high prices to me reflect food that would be of a higher quality, but in reality I believe it is just pricey due to very large portions. We barely made a dent in our dishes. The food was okay. Nothing particularly stood out. I went for a birthday dinner with family for my mom. We were disappointed with slow service. Also, my husband ordered a beer and again, for a restaurant that is a bit pricy, we thought it was strange that they served him a bottle of beer with no glass to pour it in. Ambiance is fine. This is one of my brothers favorite restaurants. He kept insisting that I go so after a day of shopping with my Mom we decided to check it out. First off, it's actually very cute and comfortable inside! They decorate very nicely so you get a cozy homey feel. (Full bar which is always a plus). They are able to accommodate large parties as well. The waitress we had (I forgot her name I suck) was FREAKIN OUTSTANDING. Very personable and bomb personality. She explained the menu to a T. ****(Everything is made to order so it might take longer than expected. This ain't no fast food people so don't be going in there and getting mad because your food is taking awhile to cook)....***** you have been warned. So mom and I obviously ordered the scallops for an App. Holy wowza they were possibly some of the best scallops I've ever eaten. Hands down. I would go back just for this dish. Mom ordered the eggplant parm with greens and veal I believe? She wasn't entirely impressed. We are also used to my gram making delicious eggplant though so you go in with an expectation to start. Mom commented that the eggplant was too thick. I ordered the chicken franchise because my brother said it was the best he's ever had. I would give it a 3.5/5 stars, not bad but it isn't the best I've ever had. I was between giving 3 and 4 stars for this restaurant but I decided on a very generous 4 stars, mainly because our waitress was amazing and the scallops were tooooo diiieeee for. Definitely a busy place. It is packed full of locals (we were visiting from NJ, but welcomed just the same ) Portions are huge, so almost everyone leaves with leftovers. Service was warm and friendly, waitress was amusing and kept up with the busy pace. We were never rushed. Too loud for an intimate date, but a fun night out if with family and friends. read more

Very good food even better waitress... First of came up to the area for weekend getaway and was recommended to this place by one of the locals enjoy it did not disappoint bread at the table. I had one of the specials which was the chicken. Luna which had great flavor had a reasonable price. and my wife ordered the haddock which she liked very much as well... as good as the food was the waitress Brenda was absolutely spectacular. Very kind very tentative help with my special diet requirements and we ended the meal even giving her a hug. That's how amazing to us. The Black Stallion never disappoints! If you are in the mood for a steak cooked to perfection, then this is the place to visit. I always order the filet. It comes with three filets, and the filets are topped with crab meat. I always have leftovers because they give you quite a bit of steak! My second favorite dish is the homemade hats pasta. In town to see family. Wanted to grab a bite after traveling all day. Asked the motel owner and she said we'd be happy with The Black Stallion. She was right! It's an unassuming place, reminding me of many old bar-and-grill places I knew growing up. I was just hoping to get a decent burger. The menu suggests folks who have a little more than average appreciation for food. Mostly, it included steaks, Italian, and seafood. Oh, and they did have sandwiches too but after looking over the menu, I wasn't going that route. Dinners came with soup or salad to start. I had the days special soup, a Cajun influenced New England clam chowder. I'd drink it by the quart. Lots of clam bits and nicely cooked veggies. Creamy, but happily a little thinner than usual NECC. SO went with the salad, which was simple but nice with cherry tomatoes, onion and olives. Their house bread was super too. Fresh out of the oven with a garlic drizzle. I went with eggplant parmigiana, a long time favorite. I got it on angel hair pasta, but could have chosen several other types of pasta, which was unexpected. It's hard to describe what makes parm good for me but a few high points were the browned and crisp edges of the eggplant slices, the sauce balancing spices, and, of course, healthy (?) amounts of mozzarella melted all over the top. SO had chicken parm on angel hair. She proclaimed it to be the best she ever had. In both cases, either offering could have easily fed both of us. So I did not finish my parm, uncharacteristically, because there was a lot there. Plus I'd seen several desserts floating to other tables and needed to investigate further. Among the choices including several crème brûlée options, cheesecake, lava cake and others, I got coconut custard pie and next door went with vanilla lemon curd cake. My pie was awesome. It had a great filling with a ton of coconut in it and whipped cream on the side. The master stroke was the sprinkle of nutmeg which gave it a little more character. The cake was good but for my taste it needed more lemon curd and a little lighter buttercream. Not sure when we'll have occasion to get to Verona again but when we do, we will definitely ride The Stallion again! read more

The Black Stallion adds a touch of class to Vernon, with attractive plating and excellent dishes. We had a special appetizer, which was a shrimp and pork belly poutine. Hands down the best poutine I've ever had, though you'll have to like onion to enjoy it. The Chicken Milano is divine- have it on a bed of angelhair pasta, where all that lovely alfredo sauce will soak in. Their alfredo is excellent, by the way, as is their hollandaise, which is also a part of this seafood-stuffed chicken dish. The breading adds some really nice texture. The Veal Francaise was the one element we weren't so big on, only because the only thing you can taste is lemon. If you really really really want lemon, this is the dish for you, though. Everything was cooked well, but the lemon overpowered all other flavors. The green salads we got on the side were excellent- fresh, with high-quality greens. No iceburg lettuce. I tried both of the dessert martinis, and they were excellent! I prefer the one with chambord, but would happily order either again. For dessert, we shared a key lime creme brulee, and the tartness of the lime was perfectly balanced with the sweet, creamy custard. The torched sugar crust was perfect. Our waitperson was attentive, friendly, and professional. Also, don't worry about dressing up here- we did, but nobody else in the restaurant did, and that was fine, too. My wife and I were in the area, yelped this place, and decided to give it a try based on reviews. I'm sure glad we went! From the hot fresh bread to the main entrees, it was all fresh, hot, and tasty. The lobster Mac and cheese appetizer was delicious. Just the right amount of cheese, and plenty of lobster. Prime rib was juicy and tender. Came out just as ordered medium rare. Even the side of veggies that came with it was tasty. The shrimp and Veal Mornay was superb. Served mixed with linguini in a very tasty Asiago Alfredo sauce. Service was excellent even though the place was packed. ( At 6pm ! ) I would recommend this place to everyone. read more

Seriously? I can't believe I'm the first one writing a review for this place. It's such a popular local Italian restaurant, and my friends living Upstate are regulars to it! Decor is country style, and staff are friendly. Food was awesome, especially the calamari, the soup and the daily special Hawaiian white tuna! The calamari was very crunchy, yet the squid didn't get coated by a thick layer of batter. Just thinly coated, and it was perfect! The Hawaiian white tuna, I think, was pan seared, and accompanied by some sweet-and-sour squash chunks and balsamic vinegar. The texture of the fish was so smooth, and the dressing was very appetizing. The veal dish, the steaks, and the chicken & scallop combo dish were pretty good too. read more

A bit disappointing visit today as we were happy last time. We arrived at 4 and it was not that busy. However, my clam chowder was left forgotten and I had to ask about it and no apology... I decided to go without it. Ordered the seafood mix on linguine, Frutti de marre. Seafood cooked well, texture wise is very good. However, again I feel this week is just not a week for me. The seasoning is off and I have to add salt... I promise I am not with extreme taste on salt. Anyway, 3 stars this time. Ohhhhhhh Myyyyy Gooooood!!!!!! I'm on the job with a group of ladies taking classes nearby who were given vouchers to eat. Me being the driver of said trip I received one as well. We come in and were greeted very warmly by a wonderful waitress named Kelly. She was very nice and very attentive. I ordered a chicken parm that was made exactly how I ordered it. I gotta say my plate went back clean. The garlic bread given to us in the beginning was good, Kelly brought me some more. All the ladies enjoyed their food. Portions were humongous. I gotta say if you are ever in the area check this place out. You will leave stuffed or you will need to be carried out.... That's how I feel right now. We had dinner here last night and everything was excellent, food, service, etc. The only thing they could have done better is ask us if we wanted another drink. Other than that, everything was spot on. We were looking for good food, maybe some good seafood, but something local and low key. This hit the spot. Filet Oscar was cooked perfectly with amazing sauce as was the stuffed haddock. I am a big fan of mashed potatoes and theirs were excellent- with what I expect was sour cream and butter mixed in.
