Review 6/10 I got the blue oyster mushroom tacos. Flavor was good, but I wish they were a bit more filled maybe more to it? It's almost too simple. I'm used to tacos where you almost need an extra tortilla because everything's packed in. I also got the Elote Vegan Fries. They were good but same thing, more fixins, I'm a saucy fan. Was craving a Sonoran dog while visiting a friend in Tucson and this was the closest that popped up.. it wasn't as good as it could be from a cart but it satisfied the craving... a little pricey but overall not bad here.. They had tacos as well, with churros, chip and salsa.. Elote, fries and few other items. read more

So good! The vegan options are great! There's even a vegan menu. I got the taco salad with blue oyster mushrooms! It was absolutely delicious. The lime cream sauce is probably my favorite. I also got a side of the avocado which I think was a little bit spicy. I'm not sure which one but they were both great. highly recommend getting both. We'll be trying the tacos and a elote next time. My mom was given some $10 off cards when her order was messed up the last time so we came in to try to use them and it was a nightmare. I work in operations, helping business owners set this kind of system up, and I could not easily make sense of it and the girl at the counter had no idea how to help. Once I finally got it figured out for us, the order took forever to come out (wasn't busy) and when it did, the order placed after mine came out a good 5 mins before mine. My order also had a meal for a hungry toddler that needed to eat asap, which was why we ordered hers first. The food itself is very good, the steak ta-ketos were amazing, my husband enjoyed his nachos, and toddler was very happy with her quesadilla (although v sad they do not have sour cream) but it's hard to appreciate the food when I had to spend so much time and energy trying to figure out how to order to use the coupon we were given, all while managing a hungry, active toddler...IYKYK ‍ read more

I like this place overall. They have a good selection of appetizing menu options including low carb options. I've had the popper quesadilla, a couple Sonoran dogs, and the low carb tacos. They have all had good flavor and been generally generous portions. Staff have been friendly but the food does take some time. Have been in three times and today was a disappointment. There are now two kiosks for ordering... or you can ring the bell for a human to take your order. I chose the kiosk to place my to-go order. It asked for a tip. For to-go. Even being annoyed that they would have the audacity to ask for a tip, it guilt tripped me into leaving one, so I tipped 10% ... for 0 service. The only interaction I had with the tip recipient was him saying my name when he brought my food out. I got home with my street corn dip and was disappointed that they have replaced the thick chips with thin chips that break when dipped. And break. And break. Annoying af. So... no human contact but a tip is requested; thin, fragile chips to TRY to scoop the dip; no ambiance and the restaurant looks dated, dirty and depressing. Probably dirty since the FOH staff was replaced by two kiosks, but I speculate. Anyway, it was my last visit. I rated 4 because my previous visits were good enough for me to try it again today but I won't be back. read more

Location is good, lots of parking in the lot near Cortaro and Thornydale. Menu contains an assortment of Mexican dishes, but specializes in hotdogs. My wife was disappointed they did not have a Chicago dog on the menu. The ambiance is OK, typical fast casual. They have some nice outdoor seating but there is so much road noise we sat inside even though it was a nice night. We ordered at the counter and waited maybe a half-hour for our food. They have a sign up saying "this is not fast food", but I don't think we are unusual in expecting similar service times to a food truck. Good thing I ordered a beer while I waited! When our food came it looked delicious! the sweet potato fries are wonderful, perfect consistency. My chile relleno dog (see photo) had quite a pile of chiles, but we thought the bun was a little much and could have used a good toasting. Seeing such positive reviews and the pictures of the various dishes looked appealing we ventured about 15mins to get to this location. Located in a plaza with various shopping venues and restaurants. We were met by a super energetic lady who gave us sum suggestions that panned out very well. Wait time was normal, fair amount of seating. Not sure what the lunch during the work week would look like, so be mindful, since parking is shared, you may want to plan ahead . Food was delicious, so that hole I spoke about was happily filled. I will start by saying, I wish this joint on was on the southeast side in Vail. I would be eating here weekly. It is a place where you order at the register but they bring you the food. Super cool vibe inside, in fact I was mesmerized by the floor. My husband and I ordered a bunch of stuff off the menu. The guy taking our order was incredibly friendly and nice. They have some really different items on the menu which I loved! We ordered the Mexican Street Corn Dip/Chips, a Sonoran Dog, Mango Quesadilla and the Vampiro Tacos w/Elote. Every item was delicious... particularly the Mexican Street Corn Dip and the what has to be homemade chips that went with it. My husband loved his tacos and the flavor of their salsa. My Mango Quesadilla was the real treat as I would have never thought to mix mango/jalapeno with asadero and cream cheese into a flour tortilla but WOW. The hotdog was good, but did not blow my mind like the other items -- I think I should have went for that Shanghai Dog as that actually looks reallllllly good. The chips were 3 x thicker than they should have been and the fish taco had very little flavor. The ingredients didn't taste quite right. The nachos had little topping and lots of chips. I should start by saying that the food here was good --- no complaints (I wasn't a fan of the roasted elote side that I had -- way too much lime flavor for me - but my wife liked it, so that evens it out in my book). I had the Sonoran Dog and my wife had the taco Salad w/chicken. my dog was tasty and my wife loved her salad. So if I was rating this on taste alone -- I'd go with 4.5 stars. But here's the thing...when you go somewhere to eat and want to rate it, you have to take EVERYTHING into consideration. So, let's start with the service/ambiance. When we walked in, there was nobody at the counter. We stood and waited for a bit -- saw two people in the litchen area working to get food out -- and continued to just wait. finally a woman walked out carrying some food to a table. She srved them, turned back and....right back into the litvhen. No "hello", no "I'll be right with you"....no acknowledment at all. A moment later she came back out...brought more food to the table....then....back into the litchen. Again, no acknowledgement. A moment later she came out, greed us, and took our order. She was quite friendly -- no issues there. But, still, you HAVE to do a better job of greeting your customers -- even if it's just a simple acknowledgement to let them know you'll be with them shortly. Then there's the issue of price. I get it, costs have gone up. But $8.50 for a sonoran dog is a bit steep, especially when I can get a really good one at a numner of locations around town for $5 or less. I get it -- most of those are stands or trucks and brick and mortar has overhead expense to consider. But it's not like there's a ton of ambiance here. Even $7 for the dog would gave been more acceptable. And the salad was $14.50 Again -- not talking about a nice dining environment. it has the same ambiance as a Wendy's or other fast-food place. But....would I come back?? I probably would, yes. the food was good and my wife liked it -- so there's value there :-) And isn't that really the bottom line? read more

Went here just for the Ta Ketos. It was worth the trip. We ordered the chicken ones. The cheese "shell" held up its shape and it felt like we were eating a soft taco without the carbs. Beautiful and delicious Taco Salad with Steak. Fresh lettuce that was green, not mostly white. Good steak chunks - not the usual inexpensive asada. Unusual to find a locally owned Mexican-inspired restaurant that goes beyond the typical fare. Very nice owner, who was at the counter. Ambience was calm, with a bit of a loud noise floor due to the fans. 88 degrees outside this cloudy afternoon in early July, and fairly warm inside the restaurant - however not uncomfortable. Some folks who clearly were regulars came and went during my visit, which says something on its own. read more

My partner and I tried The Blacktop Grill during Sonoran Restaurant Week. We're grateful to any restaurant that offers vegan options, and this one offers many! The place is on the small side with several indoor tables and just as many out on the patio. You order at the counter, and they bring the food out to you. They were busy with dine in and carry-out orders when we arrived, so it took a bit of time to even place our order. The staff kindly told us it might take 15 minutes to get our food out, but it came out sooner. We found seats on the patio and perused the window-sized menu while we waited. The Mexican street corn (excellent lime taste) and vegan vampiro tacos (lots of cilantro) were tasty and the portions ample. We weren't sure we'd have room for the mangonada, but we managed to eat it all. This isn't a fancy place, but it's really good. We'll be back. read more

Food was horrible. The meat in the taco salad was more fat than meat. The salsa sucks. The taco meat even had fat in it. Took forever to get served and they were not busy at all. Love the vampire tacos! I think they might have another location in Tucson, but we typically go to this one. The hot dog is just OK and I wasn't a fan of their Fanta drink. I think they had ice cream it's just pretty basic. Service is great. I think it's one of those small town type of places. I am genuinely baffled how this could have such positive ratings. The employee at the register had the personality of a rock. Absolutely no life whatsoever in her. My to-go order doesn't have napkins or utensils in it. The "award winning" chili is literally 95% beans. It is wrong to even call it chili. The "crispy" fries were soggy and lukewarm. I wish I could've gone to their hotdog cart when they first started. The owner is a legend! I went on grand opening day and had the infamous Elotero hot dog and the Mango Quesadilla. I have gone their many times since their grand opening and have been trying their new menu items such as the Apple Pie Float which is made with a Manzanita Sol soda (my childhood favorite). Their menu is full of delicious and unique hot dogs and quesadillas! They even have a patio which is dog friendly. Highly recommend! (They even have local beers on tap) read more

I've never tried their food truck, but finally ended up near their brick and mortar location so had to try it. I'm not one who runs to a hot dog spot, but this place lives up to the hype. My husband and I shared an ElOtero with onion rings. The flavors were so good. The quality of the hot dog, the fire roasted corn was perfect, the bun was delicious, the sauce, it all worked. NOT easy to eat in the car- ha, but worth it. They provided a fork in my bag for a reason. The onion rings were also really good, perfect crunch. This location is very far from me, but we will definitely make our way back when we can. The indoor space isn't huge, but they have a good amount of tables inside. They also have a patio with tables and heat lamps. read more
