Went here with the Wife last night for dinner. After reviews saying it was too loud I had some concerns. They were unfounded as we were able to talk normally to each other without needing to shout as stated by other reviewers. As for the food, well, all I can say is that was The. Best. Porkchop I have ever had. The food was fantastic. Drinks were good, not great. Beer was cold and delicious, but it takes a lot to mess up beers. Service was great even though they were busy. The bar service was slammed though I had my doubts about the guy behind the bar when we walked in initially. He had that "deer in the headlights" look when we sat down. Luckily we were seated about 20 seconds after we sat at the bar. In short this place is worth the drive or visit. The meats are delicious, the service is knowledgeable and helpful, and the place is pretty comfy. If the bar had been better I would have given it 5 stars. We went into The Block with quite high expectations, which is probably why we couldn't enjoy it as much. The service was great, the bar tender especially was extremely funny. The food was good, but everything there tasted far too salty. It's one thing to have a few things on the menu that have high salt content, but I was there with a large group of people and everything I tried seemed like it was dropped in the pacific ocean before they cooked it. Had dinner at The Block in Webster for the first time tonight. Enjoyed the Brussels sprouts appetizer, yummy! I had the pork with white wine, and while the meat was cooked to perfection, the sauce had a very heavy hand with the salt and thyme - WAY too much. I wish I could have enjoyed the flavor of the pork more. My husband had the butchers cut of a hanger steak. It was cooked perfectly, and the steak was very good. The Block "steak sauce" is actually a barbeque sauce..... and while it was tasty, it was not at all what we expected when we read "steak sauce" on the menu, and it truly overwhelmed the flavor of a great cut of meat - especially since the steak was served sliced on top of a pool of that barbeque sauce. For a place that prides itself on grass fed beef & local, organic meats and produce, I was really surprised the chef doesn't let the meats take center stage, but instead almost seems to hide them with sauces that are overpowered by salt and herbs. Why take a gorgeous cut of beef or pork, cook it to absolute perfection..... and then completely cover up the flavor?!?! I was confused. The desserts were fantastic, and we especially loved the house-made coconut brown sugar ice cream! The restaurant was very dark, but it was nice for a date. The service was good, the waiter was personable, made us feel welcome, and never rushed us. The food was really good across the board. However service was painfully slow and our waiter insisted on calling everyone in our party "bud". Really off putting. When we received the bill we also saw that we were charged $3 for mayonnaise to go on the burger. Per person. If you want $17 for the burger I suggest just charging that or accepting that someone might want mayo for it. Similarly we were charged $1.5 for ordering a cocktail up. You charged us to not put ice in a glass. That is not cool. Feeling nickel and dimed with undisclosed charges when you are leaving does not make for a pleasant experience. This is the best food I've ever been fed. Menu is well planned. Server was totally clean, hip, and well read. There were 4 or 5 specials, so make sure you ask about and consider a special too. This was a disaster. We dine-out with friends almost weekly. We like to find places new to us. So, we were looking forward to eating here. We go to places like Grand Slam in Fenton, Stone River Steakhouse and Grill in Chesterfield, Riefschnieder's in Columbia, Illinois, or Pogolino's in Festus. Variety and range. We were among the first to be seated at about 5:30. The first table was missing a part on one leg and fell into our friend's lap. We moved to another table and laughed it off. No big deal, really. One waiter started with us, but another took the order. Good conversation with friends. 20 minutes after ordering, we see that the place is full and other tables after us were getting orders. The couple next to us got their order, ate it and paid before we got our meal. Kept getting told our order was up next. By 6:30 with no food, no explanation and plates flying to other tables, we decide enough was enough. We stopped at the front desk to talk to the manager. The teenaged hostess started asking me questions about what I wanted. I again told her I wanted the manager. After a few minutes of waiting for the hostess and a waitress (blond lady, really nice and concerned) trying to 'find' the manager, I had enough and went to leave the restaurant so we could eat somewhere else before our movie as we still had time. Our friends and us were very aggravated at the poor service, lack of concern and unreachable manager. My wife went to leave our contact information and the little teenager snipped her off and told her to leave the restaurant. The manager called us back the next day at 6PM and proceeded to tell us that she reviewed the tapes and didn't see a problem. Really? We should expect to take up to 40 minutes to be served at their restaurant. One of the owner's was supposed to call me back, but that never happened. Very disappointed. We talked about how aggravated we were until about movie time. Don't want anything from them. Would never return. Too many other great choices. read more

So much better than the award winning restaurant down the street. Shared BBQ Pork Rinds and Bacon Jam appetizers both excellent. I had boneless short ribs and my wife had Walleye topped with Shrimp and crab both off the chain delicious. Our friends had steaks both cooked perfectly! Desserts we shared 3 Apple Crisp, Bread Pudding and the most decadent Chocolate Pudding with House made Marshmallows all of them outstanding! Our server was Great too! I ordered the Amish chicken which was so tender and juicy even leftover. Had a smokehouse Manhattan, not to impressed. The entrees were good but way way too much food. I had hoped for desert but I couldn't even finish the pork. I had the pork and dumplings, not bad but so much food. My wife had the Amish chicken which was also good but too much food. While participating in the Whole 30 diet, my husband and I visited the Block. Since it is very restrictive (no sugar, grains, dairy, beans, etc) we have dreaded eating out. The Block was a totally different experience!! Our waitress was very willing to accommodate us and spoke to the chef. Both Chef Brian and his wife Lea prepared an amazing, clean and healthy dinner for us! And it did not lack any flavor or make us feel like we were missing out on anything at all!! We started with the beet salad. (Omitting the cheese) which included an awesome vinegar-based dressing! We both had amazing entrees as well! The Fish special and Amish Chicken were absolutely delicious! They were happy to omit the butter and even topped the roasted vegetables with a quality truffle oil! We will definitely return again! Love the whole local meat/butcher concept so was pretty excited to try out the Block. And it was mostly good, but like others have said, there were some pretty basic issues that they need to work out. I really really hope they work these things out, because otherwise it is an all-around great restaurant, delicious food and well priced, with a great concept. Drinks. My seasonal drink was VERY tasty-- but it was a cocktail and was served in a stemless wine glass? I don't mean to be overly picky but I feel it should have been served up in a martini glass. Putting it in the stemless glass meant it got warm too quickly. It would have been much more delicious ice cold. Food. Very very good. My salad, the special autumn salad was seriously one of the best salads I have ever had. Perfect flavor combos, well balanced, perfectly dressed, and served slightly warm. So good. It was also HUGE! Like, the size of a normal restaurant's entree salad. I got the pork chop, and while it was delicious and perfectly cooked, the sides were not that great. The hash had an overpowering taste of celery. Don't know if it was fresh celery or celery seed but damn. Too much celery. My companion had the ribeye. Again cooked perfectly but the sauce was horrible. Just tasted like a sweet barbeque sauce. Why does a locally raised grass fed steak even need sauce? Maybe a little compound butter, maybe, but probably not even that. The meat itself is delicious when cooked well, like it was here. If you get the steak, ask for the sauce on the side. One little thing. My companion asked if he could sub the fries for sauteed spinach, and there was an upcharge. I'm OK with upcharges, but on the menu a side of fries and a side of spinach were exactly the same price... so yeah that's kinda lame. The prices are great for what you get. Seriously. I don't think that there was any menu entree over $20, except for the steak, which is market price. Nice decor, but all of the metal, wood, and glass make it very noisy. Wish they'd put some extra insulation in somewhere to buffer some of the sound. Some foam under the tables? Some art (canvas) on the walls? They don't take reservations, and the wait was pretty long. Wouldn't have been that big of a deal except the bar area was super crowded and it was hard to even get up there to order a drink. Maybe they should take out the butcher case (which no one was even looking at) and put in more bar stools? :) We will be back for sure! But hope they tighten up a bit. Food is pretty good. Lots of unique flavor. Extensive beer wine and liquor menu which was awesome. Only down fall was we got there at 7:00 and the hostess told us the wait was going to be 30-45 minutes. We waited an hour and fifteen minutes before getting a table. They allow people to check in online in front of people who walk in. Would've been nice to eat dinner before 8:30 but overall, a nice atmosphere and friendly staff. So I've seen The Block in passing, but kept forgetting to check it out. After a co-worker gave it rave reviews I knew it needed to make the cut for our Friday night girls night dinner! We came on a Friday night around 6:30. Since they don't take reservations, I knew we'd likely have to wait. But 30 minutes on a Friday night really wasn't too bad. PLUS it was happy hour. That's right, they have happy hour until 7pm. There were several starters for around $5, $5 glasses of wine and martinis, and $2 beer. With prices like that, I'll gladly wait! Once we were seated it was difficult deciding what to order. Everything on the menu sounded amazing, including the specials. I ended up ordering the Butcher's Cut, their daily steak special. It was a Ribeye served over their special steak sauce with some type of addictive garlic fries. Seriously, I'm sure they sprinkle crack on those fries because I couldn't stop eating them. Crispy, not greasy, and just the perfect amount of seasoning. The steak was melt in your mouth tender, and large enough to take half home for the following night. The rest of the table ordered their special pear salad, a trout flatbread, and the egg sandwich with their house cured bacon. All were delicious and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their dinner. Then came dessert. They make their own homemade ice cream!!! So we ordered the coconut brown sugar and candy bacon crunch ice creams to share. I have to say the candy bacon crunch was basically a very rich, fudge flavored ice cream with pieces of candy bacon mixed in. Very rich, but delightful. However, our table favored the coconut brown sugar ice cream best. Now I'm a sucker for coconut, and the ice cream didn't really have a strong coconut flavor, but it was one of the best ice creams I've had in a long time. We basically licked the bowl clean. I think adding some actual pieces of coconut would set it over the top, but that's just me and my strange love of coconut!!! All in all, one of my favorite new places in town. And even though the dining space is small, it was such a warm environment and definitely worth the wait. They could definitely use a bigger entry space, as there were a lot of people waiting, but that wouldn't deter me from returning. The prices were reasonable, most options were under $15, and several of the sandwiches were under $10. The steak special was around $28, but for the quality of meat and the amount I was given, it was worth every penny. We'll definitely be back!!! read more

Why take reservations for large groups if you aren't going to honor them? Party of 12, had to wait about 40 minutes after we arrived for a table with inadequate space for that. Total of 3 hours in restaurant. 3 kids ages 5-7 were falling asleep when we asked if they could get their food, and they did...an hour and 20 minutes after we sat down, which was 2 hours after we arrived. Adult food was cold when it arrived. Food was mediocre at best. Very loud atmosphere. Save your time and money. Too much competition to settle for this. read more

Took my partner here last night for Our Annual "Date Night," just walked in since they did NOT take Reservations! Got there @ 6:30pm. Walked in and was told there was a 30 min. wait. We waited 45 minutes instead. And I watched as they seated people that had come 20 minutes after us RIGHT AWAY! People of 3 or more. Who just got there and ONLY waited 15 minutes. It didn't make sense to me, and I started to feel something was NOT RIGHT! My feet we're killing me, I'm 7 months pregnant and having to wait for almost an hour for just me and my partner to be seated. We finally got seated, which they gave us the table near the window! I was freezing the whole time. We started with the "House-made Bacon Jam" which was SO GOOD, but then waited ANOTHER 25 minutes for our food. Which finally came but my plate was TERRIBLE! I had their "Chief's special 8 oz loin with whipped mash potatoes". The loin was so charred on the outside and tough on the inside. The mash was ABSOLUTELY great though. My partner got the "Rensing's Farm Pork Chops" which I might say looked 10 TIMES BETTER than my plate. He said his dish was AMAZING and mine well.... looked like a dinner for some one that was on a low carbs diet. They CHARGED me $27 bucks for my plate, and $19 for my partners. My bill was total $61.91, I GOT SERIOUSLY RIPPED OFF! Over all I have to say I was super DISAPPOINTED! the long wait, the charred food and cold environment(where they sat us) and the over priced meal........!!!!WAS NOT WORTH IT!!!!! Lots of people love this place, but it just doesn't do it for me. It's a hipster place for people that aren't hipsters. (If you love Rooster, you'll love The Block) It is is really noisy. I think for a happy hour with friends, this would be a pretty good place though. People do bring their young children, which surprised me, but they weren't a problem, I couldn't hear them over the din anyway. The food is good, but the service is rather uneven. I have been here twice. The server was not very attentive the first time. The second time the place was empty, so we got very good service. The prices are higher than they should be for what the food is. Seventeen dollars for basically pork butt, not loin, is crazy. I would go here again if others insisted, but it isn't my first choice. Quick math breakdown~~ terms of the food, my friend would have given her meal (burger, fries, slaw) 3.5 stars, I'd give mine 2 (we'll get to that in a sec) and we'd give service 1.5. The young woman was friendly but that was about it. Full disclosure: I've been a vegetarian for over 20 years, so I know ahead of time going to a full on butcher shop and restaurant focused on meat that I probably won't have a lot of choices. But veg or not, I love the idea of free range, organic meats and produce from local farmers. I'm all for it, so off we went with high expectations. My friend got the burger instead of steak, based on the server not really being able to tell her what would be so fantastic about the steak or any of her other options. She said the burger was good but not great. I must say though~~ it looked good. It looked and smelled like I remember "real food" smelling when I ate it years ago, before the days of factory farms and feedlot animals. I tasted the fries, not bad. The salad was ok, but other than that and some mac and cheese, there weren't really any other options, which truthfully was disappointing. I got goat cheese on bread and some roasted vegetables, which were OK at best. My options were limited and were barely OK. I mean, yes, I get it~~I'm a veg in a steak place. But the majority of higher end places will give us more options than overpriced salad and kid food at this point. Given the owners of The Block have so many other restaurants we know and like, I would have expected more from them in this arena. It was disappointing in terms of options, flavor and style. We were there on a Sunday about 430 and it was not at all busy. The place was staffed by high-school or possibly college age kids who seemed bored and like they couldn't wait for their shifts to end. The service was about what I'd expect in a fast food place, friendly but not really good at explaining the menu items or making recommendations about the various cuts of meat, the seasonings or other options. Mostly the servers congregated around the hostess station and talked without paying much attention to us. We had to flag down our server to get some steak sauce, even though she was standing about 10 feet away. Another kid finally saw us trying to get her attention and sent her over. So thee service was really disappointing considering that the perception is that this is a higher end foodie spot. So in terms of the food, my friend would have given her meal 3.5 stars, I'd give mine 2 and we'd give service 1.5, with points for friendliness. But overall, there are so many places that offer local meats, we probably won't go back to the Block. I can get much better service just about anywhere and even my omnivorous friend would agree that Onesto, the Bottleworks or Local Harvest (to name a few) offer better choices, better prices and better service. I really enjoyed this "hipster" spot in Webster. I was happy and surprised to see grass fed beef on the menu, a rare occasion in STL. I had the burger which was one of the best I have had in STL. I also had the pear and cranberry cobbler with ice cream...SO good. The wine list was decent, but they should add additional options for wines by the glass since I think there were only six or seven. Service was great and atmosphere was cool, I just wish there were more people there on a Thursday night! read more

I am giving them 1 star because of a terrible take out experience I had recently. I spent $75 on take out that took 40-50 minutes to get and then ended up throwing away food. I had a steak and fries, my fiance had the burger and fries, we also ordered the brussel sprouts appetizer and ice cream for dessert. The temperature was off on the beef (at a steak house mind you). Our fries were a soggy greasy mess. Literally threw both orders in the trash. The only thing I liked were the brussel sprouts. The last time we got take out my fries were also disgusting (and also thrown away), so this time when I ordered I specifically asked that they make sure the fries were crispy, then while waiting FOREVER for my order I reminded them that I wanted the fries crispy, and yet they were still terrible. To make matters worse, I called to talk to the manager and he argued with me about it for about 10 minutes. He told me that food doesn't travel well in take out containers, "it's science," so they can't be held responsible if the food is terrible when we get home. I live within walking distance. If trees didn't block my view, I could read the restaurant sign from my house. If your food can't hold up for 5 minutes, don't sell take out. If you think its because of the container, get new containers. We order similar items from C.J. Muggs, which is nearby. We don't need to ask them for crispy fries, the food always makes it home just fine. When I told the manager how close I lived, he tried to come up with other excuses, "well you had to pay." No, I didn't take more time paying, I asked to pay during the ridiculous amount of time I was waiting for my food, which was obviously a mistake on my part because I tipped well before I knew how terrible this experience would be. If they weren't so close to our house, I would not have given them another chance or bothered calling about the issue. I am honestly shocked that the manager would be so rude to someone that just spent $75 on take out on a weeknight. My fiance and I moved into a place around the corner from the restaurant and since then we have been several times. Eating at the restaurant, service is slow, overall its okay in person, but after this recent experience and my call with the manager I doubt we'll go back. I could overlook some food quality issues if they had good customer service (Say, if the manager even pretended to care that my food was terrible, twice) but I can't justify the expense with the combination of mediocre food, slow service, and bad management. It's really disappointing since the ambience is nice and its so close to our house. read more

We love this restaurant and enjoy sitting outside on the patio. Have been to The Block at least seven times...I always order the ribeye and my husband orders salmon or ribeye. The meat is cooked just right and seasoned to perfection. I would recommend the grilled broccoli too - it is fabulous. We enjoy the casual ambiance of this place, the fact that the food is sourced locally, and the wonderful staff. Everyone is pleasant, attentive and knowledgeable about the food offerings. Disappointment. That is how I felt after leaving The Block. I love to support local businesses that make a commitment to using locally sourced ingredients, but The Block fell short on both service and food. Some items were really excellent, the flash fried brussel sprouts and the watermelon salad. However, a bottle of white wine left on the table without a chiller, their featured steak was seasoned with so much pepper that it could not be eaten. When it was decided to say something about the steak, we then had that awkward dance with the server about what to do. The steak was sent back the rest of the party finished their meal and then the replacement steak arrived. Cooked properly, but apparently without any seasoning, it was nothing special. We had a great time at this restaurant. We showed up at around 5:30, I think. If you want to eat here on a Saturday night, holy heck, go early. We were told there was going to be a 25 minute wait, and opted to take a high top at the bar instead of waiting for a table, which we are both cool with. To drink, I ordered the habanero margarita. It tasted like they used pre-made margarita mix, it was not very good, though it was quite pricey. Having a table in the bar area meant that our waiter was the bartender. I'm not sure there is a harder working man in this entire restaurant. Actually, in all of Webster Groves. He listed every single item in incredible detail on their specials list, which was very LENGTHY. We never felt like we were being neglected, and let me tell you, the bar was PACKED. On to the food! Our appetizer was out of this world. It was some kind of flat bread with bacon jam and apples on it, holy moly. It was so good. Maybe a little on the small side, but that is literally the only complaint I could dig up. You guys. It was amazing. I ordered a steak, which came with some of the most delectable fries ever ordered. The steak was so dang good and the house steak sauce is mouth watering. Hubs ordered the pork and dumplings, which was total comfort food and also incredible. Finally, what I consider the main event - the homemade ice cream. We ordered coffee and bacon candy crunch. The coffee was very good, but not really any different from any of the store bought coffee ice cream. The bacon candy crunch was quite possibly the best dessert I have ever had. I think of it fondly quite often. On the way out, our waiter/bartender talked us into taking home some of the bacon brittle for $3. Sounds delicious, right? Missed opportunity. This place is great! I just went to their new location in the CWE and it is really nice. I had the fried brussel sprouts to start out with. They were amazing. They also make an excellent potato and cheese soup. The chefs cut of beef that evening was the ribeye and it was delicious. Cooked right to specifications and a nice flavor as well.
