This place is beautiful, and it's right on the Hudson river. The food was solid but nothing too memorable.

While the view is great. The service was lacking to say the least. The food was fair at best. While this has all the potential to be a special place for food and drinks it still needs lots of help. The hostess was lost. Ordered a grilled chicken salad and the chicken came cold from the fridge. The service staff needs training. But like I say the view was great. And by the way. Why is it when dining you need to request a glass if you order a bottle of beer. I'm not at a back yard picnic. This happens in basically every place I dine now. WTF. read more

My son ordered the New Angry Val entree. He said that the meal was the worst he had ever had in a restaurant. The seafood was tasteless and appeared to not be fresh. The waiter and hostess were both aware that he was dissatisfied with the meal and that the rest of the family were contributing portions of their own meals to him so that he had something to eat. The Boathouse could have saved a lot of goodwill by offering another entree, even something priced much lower, like a hamburger. I will not be returning to this restaurant the next time that I visit my daughter who lives in the area. read more

We went on a Saturday night, without a reservation and we were seated immediately. My husband had their signature burger and he loved it. I had a chicken wrap and I thought was pretty neat. The chicken wasn't that great, I would have liked it better if it was nicely grilled, they seemed to have it cooked in a pan. The prices are a little high but it feels nice eating there. The Boathouse is exactly what it sounds like. A rustic, artsy and homey place down on the Hudson River. The staff is attentive and friendly and the partons welcoming. The food is always delicious and very generous. They seasonally change out items on their menu offering new dishes while keeping our favorites. Their Caesar Salad is still one of the best in the county if not the state. My wife and I have been going here for many years and will continue to do so. read more

I had high hopes for better consistency in food preparation. Had the halibut special with tomatoes, onions and jalapenos--dish sounded delish but was very disappointing. The halibut was badly overcooked, it was very dry and the sauce did nothing to improve it. The garlic mashed potatoes tasted as if they were refridgerated a bit too long and reheated. I've come here for lunch several times. Their tuna burger is horrible - the tuna is overcooked and dry. The sauce is subpar and overall, overpriced and better left uneaten. The cheeseburger and the Swiss mushroom burger are really good, not overcooked, moist, delicious. The chicken wings are also delicious and have a good crisp and sauce to wing ratio. So-so. The views are outstanding, the road to get here is a little treacherous in the winter - the service is good during lunch hours. Would stick with traditional fbar fare if you go here, fries, meat burgers, wings, etc. I'm not sure about their dinner menu or other seafood offerings. read more

Boathouse has the only really good (rare) burger I've been able to find in the area since I moved to Croton three years ago. The seafood specials in the summer are also excellent. Little on the pricy side though, and the atmosphere (not the decor, but the friendliness of the staff and the feeling from the folks at the bar) has only been mediocre the 3-4 times I've been. (Guess I wish it was a little less 'yuppy' or something.) read more

Since it was a beautiful early spring weekend, we decided to take a ride up the Hudson River valley. As we passed Ossining, I mentioned to my wife that it was the home of the famous (infamous?) Sing-Sing prison. Hoping to see the facility, we drove through the town. We were able to catch a glimpse of a guard tower and some razor wire from a park near the Ossining Metro North station. Since it was a good time for a late lunch, we checked out some dining options and settled on The Boathouse. The restaurant is a little tricky to find; GPS is helpful. However, the entrance to the parking lot is not well-signed. You can drive right past it if you're not alert. If you start driving back up the hill, you've passed it. The Boathouse is indeed located at a scenic point of the Hudson just a few miles north of the Mario Cuomo (aka Tappan Zee) Bridge. If you are visiting in the summer and sit down by the outside bar, the views are spectacular. If you sit in the main dining room, or even on the adjacent patio, those views are spoiled by distance and a visually intruding parking lot. The most enjoyable part of the meal was our server, Ryan. We established an immediate rapport with him, and bantered back and forth throughout the meal. His friendliness did not detract from his professionalism, as he frequently checked in with us to see how the meal was going and if we needed anything. It was a pity to see such top-notch service wasted on mediocre and overpriced (especially relative to the quality) food. For starters, my wife ordered the steamed clams while I went for the poke. The poke turned out to be the food highlight. Fairly large chunks of tuna came out swimming in a mildly spicy sauce. My wife, who was born and raised in Hawaii, tasted it and agreed it was spot on. She said it was similar to what they sell at Foodland, a Hawaiian grocery chain. Less impressive were the clams. While the portion size was generous enough, my wife noted that the flavor of the entire serving--both clams and broth--were dominated by bacon. Make no mistake, she loves the stuff, but this was clearly a case of too much of a good thing misplaced in the wrong dish. For mains, my wife had just a simple burger. As burgers go, this one was pretty good, but she wasn't happy with the bun. It didn't hold up well against the juicy meat patty. She wound up just eating it with a knife and fork after casting the roll aside. The burger was served with fries--she didn't sample the fries so I can't comment on them. I had the Angry Val, which is rigatoni, shellfish, and hot cherry peppers in a nondescript wine sauce. There were a lot of things about the dish that I found unconvincing. First, I can't say for sure that the pasta was really rigatoni. Rigatoni are large, relatively thick tubes--compared to ziti or penne, for example. These were too short and too thin to be classified as rigatoni in my book--even if they cut them cross-section in the kitchen. With respect to the seafood, I'll give the benefit of the doubt to the shrimp and scallops, but I'm reasonably certain the lobster tail was frozen. In addition, it was just plopped down whole in the middle of the dish--it would have been better cut up into smaller pieces and mixed into the dish. Finally, all of the heat was contained in those cherry peppers. Unless you had one in a given forkful, the rest of the dish was pretty bland. The sauce was watery and did nothing to meld everything together as a good sauce should. The concept of the Angry Val is good, but the execution needs a lot of work. For dessert, I had the apple-strawberry crisp (or, more precisely, the strawberry crisp), while my wife had the brownie topped with a pretzel-caramel concoction. She reported it as just a basic brownie with caramel--she could not taste any evidence of pretzel. Sort of a fitting end to the meal. If and when our travels brings us to Ossining again, we will try another local eatery in lieu of The Boathouse. read more

Just went here for brunch with a group of 9 people to celebrate a birthday. I was a little disappointed by the very limited brunch menu, but the *excellent* service made up for it. Our one waitress kept all waters/coffees filled and was very attentive to clearing plates & cleaning the table in between courses. As appetizers, table shared calamari and this tempura vegetable roll thing- both perfect. I had the grilled vegetable sandwich w/ asian veggie slaw. The sandwich was standard but the asian slaw was great. My husband didn't care much for his pork, but the french toast & crabcakes both got tons of positive feedback from others @ our table. We had a couple special requests and The Boathouse happily accomodated. Just remember to bring a sweater if you sit by the window! It was a little drafty. The decor is clean, comfortable, and tasteful (no tacky "river" themed crap). Nice choice of music as well. Great time with family for the price! read more

Tough to find, but look for it! Amazing views right on the Hudson. We stopped by the back boat bar. What fun! A 22' Catalina sailboat turned into a bar. Cash only. They also had a little food shack for some clams, oysters, etc. We dined inside after. So many choices. The plain ol burger was fantastic and HUGE! The fish pot pie was fabulous. Nice atmosphere. From my cocktail thru dinner, this was a bust! We had a party of 6, one of us ordered a Moscow Mule, one a Dark and Stormy, one a Vodka and cranberry, the rest, various beers. My drink was NOT a Dark and Stormy... they didn't even have Goslings in the bar. The " ginger beer" and I use that term loosely, had 0 ginger taste at all, more like a cheap ginger ale. No lime was squeezed into the drink, just a minute quarter slice on the rim. The Moscow mule suffered the same fate. My husband had to ask 3 times for his beer as did one of our fellow diners. Our waiter was clueless, did not know the menu and had no idea of how to deal with a food allergy. A person at our table had a wheat allergy, ordered a fish taco with no shell and no fries or sauce and was served a chopped salad with tiny bits of fish jumbled with French fries(coated)and a white sauce. My sister and nieces crab cakes were small, greasy and had breading throughout . One had a lobster roll, which she said was good, and the diner who had the burger was satisfied ( but not at all with the service) The bright side of the night was watching the band who played last night. I'm would not go back for dinner. Inferior quality, loud, poorly trained staff. Too many good restaurants in this area. It's a waste of a great location..ps: loud and large younger bar crowd makes conversation difficult if not impossible! read more

Usually the first time you get to this place is with someone who's been there before...it's a bit hard to find, tucked away between Westerly marina and a small yacht club, even your GPS will give up... But, it's certainly worth finding it; reminiscent of a New England waterfront eatery, the menu has something for everyone, good drinks and beer selection, and the cooking is not pretentious and quite good; service is friendly and helpful, the sunsets over the river are gorgeous, the crowd is casual, not rowdy bar type; it gets very busy on weekends - make reservations... So last night I went to the boathouse. Just to say it now it was very dissapointing, I gave it 1 star because although the staff was friendly, attentive and the view was okay, the food was just bad. I ordered a black bean burger with French fries and the fries were so soggy and cold, the bun on the burger was so thick you couldn't enjoy it. My fiancé ordered fish tacos and they looked like something you wip up at midnight for a snack. It came with risotto and I'm not a food expert but I know it was off. I can compare it to diner food, all jokes aside. I expect that quality food from the diner not this place. ESPECIALLY since it's overpriced. A warm soggy Caesar salad for $9? Pasta $27? No thanks. I don't see how someone would find this place good. It's also very hard to find. I don't recommend and will not be going back. read more

Just moved to Ossining and looking for good comfort food. Found the place . Boathouse delivers it. Had the New England clam chowder. Delicious and served nice and hot. Had the seafood pot pie for dinner. Awesome. Our server Ronnie recommend it highly. Great flaky crust loaded with shrimp and scallops inbedded in a delicious sauce. My wife had the salmon with teriyaki sauce. She absolutely loved it. Wanted to try the desserts but we're stuffed. Will make room for it on our next visit. Can't wait to go back. read more

Recently I patronized the Boathouse with a friend and after only an hour and a half eating, drinks, and coffee we were told by the manager that we had over stayed our welcome. The exact words were "You've been here for quite some time and we have another party who reserved a table at 7pm. "Can you please leave or head over to our bar for a drink?" I have never experienced anything so rude from a restaurant manager. I refuse to patronize them again and I will be sharing this with all my education colleagues who go there. I was forced to give a star rating by yelp but my true rating is no stars. I'm done with this establishment. read more

I've been here twice, once for drinks and munchies, and recently for dinner. Fresh, quality seafood, generous portions, killer cheesy fries, plenty for vegetarians, great service and a fantastic location on the water. Prices are very reasonable considering the portion sizes and the quality of food. Fantastic, fun bar, literally in a boat out on the water with great views. Family run, comfortable and friendly; go and enjoy here and skip the pretentiousness and high prices of 3 Westerly next door. The lobster roll is the best around without having to drive to Cape Cod the New England clam chowder is equally delicious. I don't expect high end service at a casual spot. Made a reservation to celebrate a birthday. Manager phoned me after I confirmed the reservation, said I should come 30 mins later to avoid waiting for the previous reservation to leave. We still waited *another* hour for the table, and she was rude to us when we asked about it. Nothing offered either. They really don't run the operation well. The wait staff is mediocre. Wait times are long and they are not helpful in making recommendations of any sort. Food is decent, not great, prices are high but not outrageous. Sandwiches and salads are reasonable, entrees are not. Desserts are standard but serviceable. The building itself is small but on the dock and parking is ample. The bar noise can overtake the experience easily. Net-net, 2.5 stars if you're a local and want a beer and a burger; 1.5 if your situation is any different. Steer clear of the dishonest manager. Red Hat and Half Moon are close by and much better alternatives. read more
