This is a cute spot! I dined here with my family and everyone agreed it was an excellent meal. Definitely worth making a reservation, especially on the weekend. I had the scallop risotto, which was sooo flavorful and a generous portion. My husband ordered the duck frites and said it was one of the best dishes he's had in ages. Soooo upon our arrival (we were sent from the main restaurant due to a mix up) we were greeted by a nice gentleman. Unfortunately we weren't able to be seated for an hour. We were offered to have drinks at the bar but it was completely full. We went to the Mexican place next door to have drinks while we waited. It was pretty inside and a very chic/lounge vibe. Once we were seated our server was a sweetheart. I felt for her since an 8 person party was thrown in at 9:15pm on a Friday. She did a great job with our group! I didn't get to know the specials but menu had a lot of good options to choose from. Unfortunately they were out of the app I ordered but we were a late party on a Friday night. I don't know if it was a prep issue but I feel like for a Friday you shouldn't be out of menu items but whatever. I ended up getting the crab cakes and they were fantastic! For the entrees I had the filet with fries. The steak was cooked perfectly but slightly over salted for my taste. Lastly they have a cake cutting fee at this restaurant was approx $6 a person. Which we decided against because this night ended up being much later than expected with the reservation issue at Snuff Mill. Previously I was told $25 cake cutting fee. Also the table was charged for water (still "bottled" water). That is just bizarre. I totally get charging for sparkling or whatever name brand water but seriously. Overall the communication by management that night really let me down and my group felt more like a burden to this restaurant rather than guests. read more

My husband and I are looking for new, upscale dining options around Wilmington, if you are too, keep looking. The good: We ordered the truffle fries, and foccacia bread as starters, both were very good. The truffle fries had an excellent balance of fries and topping, and the bread was delicious with either the butter or oil option. Our server was also very good. The mid: My husband got the poutine, and it was okay. He loves poutine and has ordered it many times at many restaurants. This one had a generous portion, the curds were large and creamy, and the meat was cooked well. The gravy however drowned out some of the better aspects of the dish. The ugly: I ordered the filet mignon, medium rare. When it was brought out the server asked me to cut it in the middle to check the doneness; it was well done. She saw it immediately before I even said anything and sent it back quickly. When another filet was brought out, this time it was blue, not medium rare. At this point I just ate it instead of sending it back again. For the $56 price point I was expecting at the very least a properly cooked steak. We won't be back. read more

I cannot say enough good things about this place! First of all I want to give my compliments to the chef! I really thought I had stepped into the Kitchen of the show "The Bear", you can tell their chef is well traveled and understands unique pairings with fresh ingredients. Ok, on to service my waitress Angela was amazing and made really good recommendations. After each course the manager, owner, and servers each wanted to know how much you enjoyed the food. The ambiance is warm and friendly with a bit of southern charm. I watched as the returning customers came in. The manager was welcoming and even took the women's jackets and placed them perfectly on the back of their chair. Traveling for work can be hard at times but this place I will visit for dinner each time I'm in the area. I have been here twice now. The first time I sat at the bar and enjoyed pasta, oysters and a drink. The second time we sat at a table and had oysters, chicken, Caesar salad and drinks. Both experiences were good. The food is top tier and the service was attentive. You do not feel like you are in Wilmington. Loud? Check. Expensive? Check. Worth it? Totally. Small venue, reminiscent of French bistro. Not sure why it IS so noisy, there's not THAT many people in there. Probably just me getting old. Meal was excellent. Prawns and caviar as a starter along with a nice Sancerre. IDK how you make a chunk of haddock delicious and interesting but they did as the simple fish du jour. My wife thoroughly enjoyed the baked Alaska for dessert along with a glass of the Monte Del Fra...really nice together. I finished with a coconut sorbet (a late menu change) which was "Meh" and a neat Oban. Wilmington needed a place like this. While it may be a bit pricey, you get what you pay for. First, the good: the food here is fantastic. The menu is relatively simple, and I would describe the fare as an expert and modern take on comfort food. You won't see unfamiliar proteins, ingredients or preparations here, but everything we sample was extremely well-crafted. The crispy chicken (a spicy take on Nashville hot chicken) was excellent, as were the rockfish, oysters and the Parker House rolls. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal! And now the not-so-good. This is one of the most expensive restaurants in town. The aforementioned Parker House rolls were $12. For 4 rolls. The crispy chicken was $39 - for 3 smallish pieces of chicken. The rockfish was $42. Whether the meal was worth the price is a subjective value judgment that I wouldn't presume to make for anyone else. But don't be surprised by the menu prices when you visit. Maybe this is an unpopular take, but The Brandywine requires a deposit for reservations (which is, of course, applied to one's check). I applaud them for doing so. The room has a warm and intimate feel (which means that it isn't large) and the only way that can work for the house is if real paying customers won't be turned away because of phantoms who don't. read more

Kay and I were pleased to snag reservations for opening night at The Brandywine restaurant (yesterday evening). https://thebrandywinebar.com/ The Brandywine harkens back to classic hotel and department store fine dining. In Wilmington, think back to the Brandywine Room at the Hotel DuPont (without the dark paneling and Wyeth paintings!). Kay started with the grilled avocado (with orange marmalade) accompanied by a citrus salad. I had the Oysters Rockefeller. Both were delicious and the oysters had a few twists that made them an improvement over the old school recipe; the Thai Chile gave them a little welcome fire and was an exceptional touch. Both exceeded our expectations. For an entree, we shared the Steak Diane. The traditional sauce of mustard, Worcestershire sauce, cream and cognac was perfect. It came with French fries with a truffle dipping sauce but we also enjoyed dredging the fries through the sauce from the steak. The filet was carmelized on the outside and rare to medium-rare inside. Delicious. The wines by the glass were well selected. Kay began with the Luc Poillan Sauvignon Blanc (Touraine), while I had Passy Le Clou Petit Chablis (Burgundy). With the steak, Kay had Sierra de Toloño Rioja Tinto (Rioja Alta, Spain) and I had Anne Collard Le Abe Rouge (Côtes du Rhône). After dinner, in lieu of dessert, we shared a glass of Château Lauduc Le Babbler Rouge (Bordeaux). The Rioja and Rhône were particularly enjoyable. The Brandywine is fortunate to have snagged a certified Sommelier and I look forward to working my way through the wine list. The Brandywine is a welcome addition to our dining scene and we look forward to returning. Was here for the 1st time this week for a friend's birthday. They had been here before and told me they really like it. Like is an understatement, this place is above wonderful. We were greatly very politely, we were a few moments early for our reservation, so we sat at the bar until our table was ready. Bartender was very friendly and helped us choose a drink. He made a great choice. Our table was ready on time. The seating was very comfortable and there was enough light, but not too much. Everything we ordered, and we ordered a lot, was outstanding. The grilled oysters, shrimp scampi and beef Wellington, stood out as the best I have ever had! The wine was very good. But the food and service were excellent. My fiancé and I had a very pleasurable experience at The Brandywine the other day. I typically have the worst luck with how my steak is cooked (it's really crazy how much lol). My steak came out PERFECT! I had the Prime Ribeye Delmonico, and my darling had the Simple Fish Du Jour. We had the Oysters, a Caesar Salad, and the Crab Louie for our appetizers. So, we finally went the The Brandywine last night. Here are my thoughts. * Excellent service. From the hostess, to the manager to the server, to the busboy. Fast, polite, and attentive. Our waiter talked with us about about Eric Ripert and Thomas Keller. If you are a Wilmington foodie, you know what an amazing breath of fresh air that is. And our glasses were never empty. * Design. The manager says its reminiscent of Palm Beach, and I can see that. Other have said that with the menu (more on that), the feel was old country club. I would say the the design is nuanced and elevated. Lots of small details added up to a cool, slightly retro feel that takes you to a place that is not Wilmington, De. I want to go back just to chill in that room again. * Menu/Food. When previewing the menu online, I will say it does seem to bear the limitations of an old school country club menu, but in person, the feel is much more contemporary. I think the execution was generally very good. The Tuna Nicoise was excellent. Highly recommended. The onion dip was a little too straight forward. I would have liked to see the chef do something a little more 'chefy' with it. The oysters of the day were good but perhaps not as plump as they could have been. There was a tuna tartar type dish that may have been a tad over-spiced, though it was well constructed. The fried chicken was very good, though the pieces were a bit small. I am looking forward to exploring more of the menu. For dessert the creme brûlée was perfection. Look, culinarily this is not the House of William and Merry, but I hope it has aspirations to get there. Overall, this is a restaurant we want in Wilmington. It speaks strongly to a specific segment of Delaware and it is doing everything right in terms of style and service and for that it should be rewarded. The food is well executed, and I get the sense that the chef and staff have great aspirations for the future. Menus are driven by costs and skill. I think that with business success, we will see the menu creativity match the detail and nuance of the rest of the restaurant. Regardless, check it out. I really liked it. And do a favor to all restaurants in Wilmington and go to them on a Tuesday or Wednesday! read more

This was our second visit here. As in the first visit, the food was prepared wonderfully and the service (Sophia) was exceptional. As others have commented, the prices are high but the quality is really a cut above. But I doubt we'll go back until the sound level is brought under control. On our first visit (a Saturday night) the small room was packed. It was tough to talk over the noise but one could feel the communal energy. This time (a Wednesday) the room was less than half full. And the management - for some reason known only to them - insisted on playing music at twice the level it ought to have been (even after being asked to turn it down but doing nothing). As a musician I appreciate background music and the creation of atmosphere. But Brandywine seems to have no sense of what is appropriate for fine dining. When one cannot hear the waitstaff describing the menu and cannot hold a comfortable conversation with friends, no level of great food and service can overcome an uncomfortable environment. Time for the management to listen to customers and bring the decibel level down. read more

The Brandywine is really a special experience. I came here for my birthday dinner and was truly wowed. Our server was excellent--friendly, on-point, and made fantastic suggestions--like the roast chicken. I normally would not order chicken at a fancy restaurant, but my husband gave it a try on the suggestion of our server and I'm glad he did. It was so flavorful and cooked just right. I had the rockfish and it did not disappoint. We started with the crab Louie which was divine. My husband had the Brandywine salad and I had the Caesar--both fantastic. The highlight for me was the dirty martini with sea salt foam--this drink is out of this world. The best dirty I have ever had. I also had American Pale Ale Mr. Fox which is their house beer. It was so hoppy and delicious, not to mention the art work on the can, by the whimsical artist, Dina. This place is a true gem, from the classy, artsy decor, to each and every plate that we had. Arrived around 5pm for Saturday Happy Hour. I received probably the best martini I have ever had. Unfortunately, it went downhill from there with the bait and switch. I asked for the lite faire/ happy hour menu. On the website they offered a Royale with Cheese or a Fried Chicken Dinner. To my disappointment, neither were on the menu. The bartender informed the menu had changed recently. I decided to have a 1/2 dozen oysters with my drink while I was there. The chef who served them had to see the disappointment on my face when I looked at the plate. These had to have the rare rating of "very small". They could not be "standard". On the positive, they were served correctly and tasted fresh. This was not the experience I was expecting. However, this was my first visit so I'll try The Brandywine again. read more

If you like to spend a stupid amount - and leave hungry - this place is perfect for you. Added bonus of not being able to hear the person sitting next to you. The beef wellington for 2 was delicious, and if it were being shared by 2 toddlers it may have been just enough. Luckily it came with 2 tablespoons of mashed potatoes. After our dinner was finished and we were considering a second after dinner drink at our table (there were no seats at the bar, but our waitress reassured us that we could stay at the table) the owner of the restaurant came towards us, leaned over my friend's shoulder and curtly stated "sorry to break up the party ladies but we have a 9:30 reservation at this table"....and left. Taken aback, but ready to leave anyway, we did so- but not before I was able to share with the manager how rudely I felt we were spoken to. He graciously apologized for this- but at that moment, the owner came over and began to bark at me about having a specific time allotment for reservations- ours being 1hr 45 min- which I was completely unaware of. When I reiterated my shock at his rudeness to guests who had just spent close to $300 in his establishment, he stated " just leave" -- twice-- opening the curtain and moving us out. The owner of this restaurant, Bill Irvin, was the problem here- had he explained the situation to us with civility and respect, there would have been no problem at all. Hard to believe an establishment wanting to offer a gracious dining experience has this kind of unprofessional person at its helm. I would also add that the information re: time reserved for dining at the Brandywine is located ONLY on its website, within reservations, under a tab marked "overview"...so one needs to look for it. I have successfully made 3 reservations at this establishment online and do not recall ever seeing this information while doing so. Most unfortunately, this experience has made me- and several friends- unwilling to return to a restaurant that we have very much enjoyed several times since its opening. read more

Food, service and ambiance are all 5 star. Waitress was great, food was delicious, and ambiance is totally relaxing. So why 2*s? Management. We were about to order an after dinner drink when what I believe to be the owner came over and said (and this is pretty much a quote): "party's over.....this table is reserved". As we were leaving, he came back and when we said how rudely we felt we were treated, his response was "just leave". We paid $270 to be treated at the end of what should have been a lovely evening, like an unwelcomed guest. Does not make either of us want to give them -- or their sister Snuff Mill Restaurant -- another $270 soon.....despite the great efforts of their wait and kitchen staff.
