The vibe is great and it makes for a good place to study. There is ample lighting, tons of space, and lots of chairs and tables making it a very open environment. However, this environment is significantly affected by how cold this place is kept. Maybe it's not always this cold but when I was there I found myself wondering if I was in Canada. I also heard several people around me comment on how cold it was and saw a student with a blanket. So if you come here, just know that you've got to bring a jacket just in case. That was the biggest downside of this place to me. I didn't get to try their coffee or anything so I can't comment on it. Their signature sandwiches/salads are round $9-$12 and come with one of their drinks.

In the mecca of Rice Campus, you will find a marvelous modern glass structure which has become a communing ground for staff, faculty, and students. It houses the vendor Salento Cafe, which is also located in the Rice Village. As a staff member, I have utilized this space often for various meetings. It sets a more casual tone for a formal gathering. If you need to take a break and catch up with your colleagues, this is a great venue for coffee talk. I have also attended events that serve hors d'oeuvres and wine. A great central location in respect to Rice campus that will bring everyone together in a short distance. The decor is clean and classy. The furniture reminds me of scene from the film A Clockwork Orange. It's cool, artsy, and contemporary. There is plenty of comfortable seating inside and outside. Whatever environment and mood you are looking for, it can be accommodated. I have always had a fondness for Salento Cafe and was thrilled to discover they were going to be the new vendor for this location. What a great fit. They have the best chai tea latte. With other coffee spots, I usually have to ask for more chai because they put too much milk. Their chai is perfect in consistency. Another favorite of mine is their brie sandwich. Need I say more. If you are part of Rice or visiting, I encourage you to stop in and experience this exquisite architecture and 5-star cafe. ***Visitors, make sure you park in the visitor parking lot because the inner loop street parking is only for 15 minutes and they will ticket you if you exceed that time limit!

Flo Paris installation: Good food but pricey, this coffee is terrible tho in the fact that the amount of ice they put in is so outrageous for the price i paid. Completely dissatisfied, never coming back, and i even go to rice Edit: i went and complained and they gave me a complete new one!!!! Added more stars back from 1 to 3 bc of this

Happy hour drinks are pretty good but a little pricey. Peachy bellini is a popular favorite because it's sweet and light. I've ordered an empanada platter which comes with two empanadas and a salad. The chicken one is the best one in my opinion. Lunch special sandwiches come with chips and an iced drink. Portions are good but still a bit pricey.. Definitely try the Nutty Owl if you haven't though! Overall, this place is a little pricey for what you get but it's a really nice place with beautiful views. Good go-to place to get a drink and catch up with a friend.

cool building, great outdoor seating, but not a great food or beer/wine selection. Great for picnics and kids.

Big fan of the nutty owl sandwich (I still don't understand where the nutty part of the name comes from though).

Grinder's Coffee Bar came up and it was right across the street so I made my way over. I arrived around 1 p.m. on a Wednesday. I parked in their small complimentary lot and made my way inside. Ambiance (3.5/5): Grinder's is basically two spots in one. When you walk in, there's a small counter where you place your order. And a handful of seats. From there, you wan walk into a more spacious second room that houses a CBD shop. And more seating along with the bathroom. I sat at a couch in the CBD area. While weed isn't my thing, if you're into both weed and coffee, that makes for a nice one-two punch for you. There isn't a ton of seating, less so than most coffee shops. Luckily, since it was a weekday, I didn't have any trouble. I wonder if that's different on the weekends. They also have free WiFi if you'd like to linger and work or study. Service (2.5/5): The menu is a little confusing because they have a menu on the counter and a menu on the wall with different items. I didn't see that there was a menu on the counter until I was about to place an order. They also have some beverages in a cooler that aren't on either menu. Not the best set up. Service wasn't terribly friendly either. Food (N/A): Since I just had lunch prior, no food for me. They have a small, but appetizing number of pastries and small bites for sale if you get the munchies (pun intended). Drinks (3.5/5): I'm not a coffee drinker so take this with a grain of salt. When I go to a coffee shop, I like coffee shops that still have a nice selection of teas and juices. Grinder's has a small number of teas that can be made either hot or iced. I went with one, iced, and sweetened with agave (for a surcharge). I liked it and the price was reasonable. They also had a mocktail of sorts that was available on their seasonal menu, although like most mocktails, overpriced. While not really my vibe, if you're a CBD person, Grinder's will be right up your alley. It's a unique spot and located in a great part of town.

Staff was ok... not exceptionally warm and friendly but good enough. I asked a question and the girl responded to me without turning around or making eye contact - gave me the impression she was annoyed that I was asking a question. There were only two baristas working on a Saturday morning so perhaps they were stressed because it was busy. Coffee was delicious and served with a small chocolate mint. They also serve beer. Variety of pastries. Small parking lot that fills up quickly! There was a line of people outside waiting to get in a few minutes before they opened. They don't open until 9 am which is late for a coffee shop. Highly recommend if you're looking for a cute destination for a casual date or out with a friend.

I love the upper level deck and snagging a cute table overlooking a window. It's definitely a 'one size fits all' that is great for morning work/studying, light afternoon catch up, or a cozy late night vibe. Traditionally, I've seen a lot of people studying during the week while a bit more of a lively feel on weekend evenings. People are very polite but do follow the courtesy of waiting to find a table until after they order, since it can get a little busy. Overall, they are quick with coffee orders with a variety of pastries. Parking is difficult (but it is Montrose!), so anticipate adding a little time to your drive to find a spot.
