    Mediterranean night

The Buffet is inside the Starlight Casino lobby area in West Edmonton Mall. Since it's not in the casino it's open to children and there were a few families when we went to eat. With my Player's Club card, I get coupons including a 2 for 1 Buffet one, which makes it $20 for dinner for 2 which is a pretty good value. The breakfast and lunch prices are $10 and $15 respectively. There have theme nights, Tuesday is Mediterranean, Wednesday is Indian, and Thursday is Asian. You pay when you arrive so you can't check our the fare first. They also ask for a tip but we didn't tip at that time as we didn't receive any service yet! We went on a Tuesday and the upper seating area was about half full. They also have seating in lower area accessible by stairs but they closed off that section while we were there. The booths are roomy and comfortable. The buffet itself is small. There are 3 rows with the first having 2 soups, 5 different salads but were on small plates, rolls, and condiments and cutlery. The middle row had the hot foods and that night it included rice, roast potatoes, green beans, other vegetables, beef souvlaki, roast chicken, pita and various dips including hummus, gravy, spanikopita, and a person there to cut you slices of roast lamb. The third row had an ice cream machine and toppings, fresh cantaloupe and honeydew melon, pre made mini cupcakes, a few different squares, baklava, and a peach crumble. They also have self serve coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and one of those soda machines that you select many different kinds of flavoured pop. The lamb was the star of the show, it was tender and not too gamy tasting. The beef was dry and hard and chicken was cooked well but not very flavourful. Couldn't really go wrong with the green beans, spanikopita, and potatoes. For dessert, the peach dessert was so bad I had to spit it all out as the peaches were so sour as they were the canned type. I went back for a piece of baklava and it was stuck on the plate. I wiggled a piece free and since it was so big, I wasn't able to finish it. It was pretty cold as they probably took it out of the freezer a few hours earlier but still good. The service to start with was awful and based on that, I would have given this 2 stars. There was a woman walking around and taking away plates and acknowledging other tables but not ours. When I did have a dirty plate, she removed it but not the cup. The woman who came by after her was nice and efficient. The first woman was terrible and I don't see her lasting long. The food was just alright and the price good with the 2 for 1 coupon.

I really have experienced better. Buffets aren't always known for having top notch food. It's about the quantity of food, not its quality. There is ample seating. Booths and tables, and two levels of it. The main level is where the buffet is and seating, the lower area is just seating. Reasonable. You also have to pay for your buffet before you eat. Make sure you grab some cutlery before going back to your table since they don't set it for you. It's fully self service. The soda beverages are dispensed via a Coca Cola Freestyle machine. Not gonna lie, I had so many refills just to try as many options as possible. I really love soda. The hot food selection was minimal. I like trying different foods at buffets and this place does not really offer that. I am not looking for new or exotic things only a selection of things that I might not always make. The food that was there was bland. But because there were a few other tables and a couple of bigger groups the trays of food were coming out often enough so at least the food was hot and fresh. The salads aren't worth talking about. The desserts are ice cream and a few obviously store bought cakes, some cut fruit, and jello. I ate more dessert than food. I don't know that I would waste my calories on another visit. The downside for that is it's conveniently located in WEM.

They have hit a home run here. Smaller food assortment, but everything is delicious. Not just filling, but very tasty. The price is right considering that all bases are covered. Perhaps another music genre is in order in keeping with the retro theme. And as a decorator, the decor is very uninspiring. As a Baby Boomer, I would add some starlight themed decor. Get some turquoise in here.

    Salmon soup!

A beautiful restaurant that provides hearty eats for reasonable prices. Here each day staff prepare new dishes that are healthy and definitely better than the food court fare. Guests are asked to pay upfront and then are given free reign to seat themselves. While the selection to the buffet is small, it regularly changes each day. I prefer this compared to massive buffet restaurants that can't keep up with their items. There's a small salad area, a selection of soup, an ice cream machine, a fountain pop machine, and an area for the entrees. Plenty of seating is typically available, and the washrooms here are modern, tiled, and clean. If you are expecting to be wowed with top notch food, this is not the place. But if you are looking for a decent, clean, and hearty meal without going to fast food or some of the other fried joints in WEM, this is it. My only caveat here is a negative experience that I share to caution those with allergies. To be fair you should be taking care of yourselves at all times anyway: I helped myself to a bowl of soup that was clearly labelled cream of chicken. After eating the soup, the meat was clearly salmon. I alerted staff who looked into the soup, and then changed the label. Staff apologized repeatedly. No one is perfect, but this wasn't enough for me to colour my view of the place. I give this place 3 stars because the food is consistently ok.

Review: John @ Starlight Casino (Thursday Night)…read more Okay, can we talk about John for a second? Because I hit the Starlight this past Thursday and honestly, finding a bartender who can actually keep up with my energy is like finding a flight deal to Tokyo for $400--rare, beautiful, and slightly miraculous. John is absolute chaos in the best way possible. The man was moving faster than I do when I hear "final boarding call" at the airport. I watched him handle a drink order that sounded like a chemistry dissertation while simultaneously nodding along to some guy's very loud, very wrong life story. The level of "professional hostage-taker" patience he has is truly a gift. (Tru story); At one point, I'm pretty sure he made three drinks, grabbed a fresh bowl of limes, and cracked a joke that had the whole bar wheezing, all without breaking eye contact with the shaker. If that isn't worth a massive raise, I don't know what is. Seriously, pay the man more before I decide to pack him in my suitcase and take him on my next solo trip as a personal hydration specialist. John is the literal jackpot of this casino. 10/10, no notes, give him all the money. See you next Thursday!

Buffalo took all my money until I put my last $5 into the video poker and made over $80. What a nice surprise! This place is mellow, cozy, has welcoming staff and easy to navigate around. Table games were a popular spot so we didn't get to try them but still had a great time! Clean place and the best part was not having to smell any cigarette smoke. Great Job starlight!
