Tried this last night based on reviews. It's a really interesting place. We called before going and asked if we needed reservations. Were told probably not but it couldn't hurt - so we did and glad of it. The place was crowded with most of the dining room taken up by trivia players. We were seated in an overflow room. The greeter was very friendly and server, Casey, was wonderful. I went with the shrimp and grits over the Mahi-Mahi based on server's suggestion. The Mrs had the walnut coated Trout with a bourbon sauce. Both were excellent. One note, the shrimp and grits sauce was more a creamy white sauce as opposed to the red type I'm used to. It was delicious, just different. The place had a really cool bar area and we'd probably go early to have a drink there before dinner next time. Only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is because it would have been nicer to be in the main dining room. read more

I've been wanting to eat here since we moved here over two years ago and we finally did. The restaurant is part of the lodge and is quite large. Because we are old and can eat when we want, we made reservations to eat at 4. We were the only diners there but you can tell that the place can be very popular. Our waitress, Phyl, was attentive and friendly. We both ordered the trout, because you should eat trout if the place is called the Flying Trout and we were not disappointed. Keith ordered the Copperhead Trout and I ordered the Char grilled trout. Both were great but the char grilled was the star! We love trout and theirs was top notch. My only suggestion is that they didn't heat sides up enough. We both ordered the squash casseroles which was amazing but were Luke warm, same for my grits. Keith's potatoes were fantastic. Not that I haven't, not that I can't--it's just that I prefer my cabin to come with a great restaurant and bar. The Flying Trout Restaurant fits the bill as the food-and-fun hub of the Copperhead Lodge. I expected we'd find ourselves at the bar during our stay; what I didn't expect was one of the best gnocchi dishes I've ever had in my life! The restaurant is large and spacious with a kitschy, rustic feel. The bar sits at the far end of the room and opens onto a big outdoor deck wrapped around the lodge. The outside gets a lot more points than the inside--but then again, nature is always the better designer. I was blown away by the Sweet Potato Gnocchi: an incredible vegetarian dish featuring sweet potato gnocchi, tomatoes, spinach, Vidalia onions, and oyster mushrooms in a brown-butter sauce. Seriously, a great dish. Prices are reasonable for both food and drinks; the restaurant isn't taking advantage of having a captive audience from the lodge. Service at the bar was consistently great. Haven't been here for couple of years. They are under new ownership & new management. Things have improved We had reservations, not required but recommend. We were seated promptly, took a few minutes for our server to show up, but once she did she was excellent ask for Susie. Everything we asked of her was answered or brought to us. My hubby & I both had bacon cheeseburgers. They were both cooked as requested which is rare. They have live music on Friday & Saturday nights. Pretty disappointed I've been to the flying trout a lot we like the food but today I treated my wife because she's been taking care of me since my surgery that would be nice to go out to dinner we waited an hour after ordering and our food still did not show up. We were getting up ready to leave when our food showed up. No reason nobody came and talked to us about. Hey, we're running late. Nothing just very very disappointed. here I thought it was gonna be something special for my wife and instead we sat there for over an hour and didn't get our food not happy at all very disappointed and nobody even oh sorry just say it didn't come up and talk to us while we were waiting and going hey we're running a little late. Our server was Ava who was the most delightful young lady. Be sure to request her when you go. It was not very crowded which made our visit so relaxing. This place is such an experience and I cannot say enough good things about it. The atmosphere is fun as the walls are decked with fishing gear and memorabilia. The location is great with the place being tucked into the mountains of north Georgia. All the way staff define southern hospitality and the Friday fish fry is one of the best I have ever had! We had an awesome lunch experience at The Flying Trout on Smash-burger Thursday. We dined on their creek side back deck while enjoying the wonderful scenery and the sights & sounds of outdoor mountain living. I had the Copperhead Smash-burger and my wife had the Our Back Porch burger, both of which were cooked to perfection and tasted fan-freakin-tastic. Our daughter had the Nature's Harvest Bowl salad that was both visually appealing and she said was fresh and very flavorful. Our server was Jill and she was INCREDIBLE in every regard. I'm not happy with my order, it was old, discolored, and more expensive than indicated. My meal should have been roughly $20, but it was nearly $40. I was charged for a salad when it was supposed to come with the meal. I was charged for the full order of bread that was advertised. My lettuce was old and pink. We loved this place. Staying near by for a long weekend and found this restaurant on Yelp. Based on the reviews, we decided to try it and we were not disappointed. We were greeted cheerfully and our waitress (Suzzy) was phenomenal. There were four in our party and we had the pecan crusted trout and chicken piccata among the four. Both dishes were excellent and the bacon Brussel sprouts were delicious. They also have a very good beverage selection and was thrilled to see they had Highlands Gaelic ale. We had a reservation, got there early, and the host and waitress didnt mention anything about being understaffed or a lack of kitchen crew. It took a while to get the drinks and appetizers so we ordered our food right then. Half of us ordered the same thing. After 45 min with absolutely no update from the wait staff, we asked and they said they were doing their best and it would be 20 more minutes. 30 min later we asked if we could have some rolls to hold us over, but was told no because the food was being plated. 10 min later they brought us cheese and crackers, and said it would be even longer for our dinner. Finally close to two hours total, our food arrived. Most was luke warm. Steak overcooked, brussels sprouts overcooked into mush, salmon tasted frozen. If our waitress had been honest upfront, we would have ordered quicker and prepared for a wait. But they were dismissive, and did not offer any discounts (except for one persons steak which he couldn't eat, they gave a whopping 25% off). Terrible experience, which is surprising given the reviews and pictures we saw. Father's Day Dinner Review - The Flying Trout We arrived at The Flying Trout at 6:45 PM for our 7 PM reservation for a table of four. The restaurant, known for its picturesque setting and charming exterior, made a lovely first impression. The landscaping was beautiful, and the ambiance inside and out was warm and inviting--perfect for a special occasion like Father's Day. Upon check-in, the hostess informed us it would be a while before we were seated. With some time to spare, we explored the on-site retail shop, which featured a variety of attractive items. However, most items lacked clear pricing, which made browsing a bit confusing. After inquiring, I purchased a sweater ($45) and a makeup bag ($10)--both charming pieces. A decent start to the evening. We returned to the hostess and let her know we'd be enjoying the live music on the patio while we waited. The deck area was stunning, and the band playing was absolutely fantastic--an unexpected highlight of the night. At 7:10 PM, I returned to the host stand to ask about our table. The hostess explained that she had called our name and, seeing no one come forward, seated other guests. I clarified that she had acknowledged we'd be outside. She apologized and promptly seated us. Unfortunately, service from that point on was extremely delayed. We sat for 15 minutes before being acknowledged, and only after a second inquiry did the hostess return to take our drink order, citing that our server was overwhelmed with a large nearby party of 16. When the server did arrive, she was kind and clearly doing her best under pressure. We remained understanding and patient, knowing the situation wasn't entirely in her control. We ordered drinks and appetizers, but service continued to lag. It took nearly an hour for our first appetizer--jalapeño poppers--to arrive (at 8:10 PM), and another 20 minutes for the brisket nachos, which were unfortunately disappointing. The chips were visibly overcooked, possibly in old oil, and lacked the expected quality. My mocktail mojito was simply club soda with a mint leaf--missing the muddled mint and simple syrup that make a mojito refreshing. The mint was unexpressed and the drink lacked flavor. At 9:14 PM, our entrees arrived--well over two hours after our scheduled reservation. We were the last table to be served. My father and I had ordered the Father's Day special, a surf and turf, expecting prime rib and lobster. We were instead served ribeye, and the lobster was overcooked to the point of being inedible. My husband's ribeye lacked seasoning and tenderness. The asparagus was basic--just salt and pepper. My mother enjoyed her fish, the lone bright spot in our meals. When we informed our server about the mix-ups and quality issues, she apologized and later returned with two slices of cheesecake and news that 25% would be taken off the bill. While appreciated, the offer felt inadequate given the circumstances--especially as my father is diabetic and could not eat the dessert. We were hungry, disappointed, and felt let down by what should have been a celebratory evening. We later spoke with a manager and learned that a server had walked out earlier in the night and the team was overwhelmed. We empathize--many of us have service industry backgrounds--but ultimately, the restaurant's leadership must take responsibility. Proper pacing of reservations and kitchen tickets is essential. Relying on the excuse of two large tables does not justify the widespread service breakdown. Every surrounding table appeared equally frustrated, and the atmosphere was increasingly tense. By the end of the night--10 PM--we had spent over three hours at the restaurant. We were offered a final bill totaling $54 after deductions, as drinks and tax were not comped. We left a $60 tip out of respect for the server, who tried her best under difficult conditions. The Flying Trout has a beautiful space and a promising concept, but execution on this night fell far short of expectations. For a $281 experience, the service and food quality must reflect the price point. We sincerely hope that the management team reflects on this feedback and takes steps to better train staff, improve communication, and implement systems to help them succeed--especially on high-traffic nights. The food is really good, comparably priced. Staff goes above and beyond! The only thing that I couldn't take was how loud the music was inside the main dining hall. It was a good musician but he played the sax at maximum volume and we could not have a conversation with the people at the table or the server without shouting. Many people were sitting around taking up the tables, not buying anything after they finished eating and they would dance and then go back to the table taking space when folks were waiting to eat. This was a really great restaurant. We decided to come here for my mom's birthday dinner. We checked in and grabbed one of their peach mules to drink on the porch while we waited for outdoor seating. It was absolutely beautiful. Their cocktails are phenomenal. I quickly noticed their pro military vibe, which I appreciate as a veteran. We were seated after about 15 min. Not bad for a Saturday. Perfect spot by the railing overlooking the creek. We ordered their shrimp fritter lollipop appetizer both ordered their trout special, which came with fresh vegetables and Gouda grits. All of the food was amazing and huge portions! Service was slow, but they are experiencing staffing shortages due to COVID. Their kitchen is on it! I'm visiting the area for the weekend and we had heard about the Flying Trout so we wanted to see what all the fuss was about. We were sure glad we did! This the best restaurant I have eaten at in decades! I cannot say enough about the food. We had the calamari to start then between us we had the fried tomatoes BLT, shepherd pie and the Reuben. All of us couldn't get over the size of the portions served. Sooo much food! You can tell the best ingredients are used. I am not a foody at all but I was so excited about the food. Three of us came in for dinner. We asked for deck seating, but there was a big party with reservations expected. Our waitress (never gave us her name) was friendly and attentive. There is a beautiful deck that goes around the side and back, but we were seated in a large dining room with a huge beautiful fireplace. The owner did come out to speak to us and it turns out he just bought it 3 days ago! My husband had the meatloaf which was delicious. It is like a very large (half pound maybe?) which has beef grilled. Served with green beans and mashed potatoes. Excellent! My grandson had the blackened snapper which was served on top of rice with a tomato cream sauce with andouille and shrimp. I went for traditional southern fare with fried chicken, also served with beans and potatoes. All very good. This restaurant is a gem in a wooded paradise. We had the privilege of coming here for both nights during our stay in Blue Ridge and I had some of the most unexpected bespoke southern cuisine. Literally everything from the Inspired local charcuterie board to the shrimp and grits to the hand cut ribeye steaks everything here is thoughtfully presented and served to Perfection. The restaurant is under new management and boast a new James beard class chef. It used to be called the flying trout but has been re-founded as union social a place for families and foodies alike to gather and savor the local flavors of North Georgia. The minute we walked in the door, we were greeted like "long and loyal customers!" It was our first time entering this enchanting lodge, and the smiles and personalities that abound there among the staff was totally contagious! As we were being led to our window table, I was amazed at the plated food I saw. being brought out into the dining room ... and our meal DID NOT DISAPPOINT! We went for "Prime Rib Wednesday" -- and I have to say, I have not ever had a better prime rib in 40 years!! Yep, and I've had a lot of experience. It measured an inch thick, marbled perfectly, and cooked to perfection (I prefer medium-rare). Our waitress, "Susie-Q" couldn't have been more friendly and knowledgeable in helping us in our selections. The side of green beans was cooked perfectly -- not overly done and seasoned most tastefully. We had our choice of baked potato toppings, and also the horseradish -- creamed or straight. None of us could finish the prime rib, so it'll do double duty for breakfast! The atmosphere of this lodge is quite welcoming and tastefully done. The gift shop was fun, the bar looks like a happening place, and we will definitely be back as it's the best (and closest) restaurant to us!! First-this location has rebranded to the Union Social. Familiar but rebranded with a new chef. Names aside this is an interesting place with a friendly vibe, good parking and speedy service. We randomly picked what we thought was The Flying Trout and ended up with a less country style eatery. The Union Social is an upscale eatery. We had the social charcuterie, an appetizer, that offered a remarkable number of tasty items on a board very similar to a paddle often seen in the junior high dean's office. Everything from candied bacon to orange slices to black eyed pea dip along with ham and turkey pieces came on the board. It was very filling. There was no draft beer when we visited but the glasses were cold. Nice place that also has motorcycle parking and would be a nice ride from Blue Ridge or Blairsville GA. read more

Since the reopening my wife and I have eaten there 3 times. The food and service have been great just last week I had the burger for the first time and it was delicious. The dining room is still a little cold and noisy however, something that can be tolerated. If I had a suggestion it would be to price cocktails a little lower. We have gone to the Flying trout a handful of times prior to the new owners taking over last year. Hands down it exceeded our expectations this time. The staff was so incredibly friendly from the time we walked in the doors, throughout our meal, and even upon leaving. The hostess was so sweet and personable. Our server Jill was very attentive and absolutely gave us such down home southern hospitality. Our food was fabulous. The calamari appetizer was hot and a large amount for two of us. Shrimp Scampi was hot and did not disappoint with flavor. Most importantly, the shrimp was not overcooked. Upon leaving, we spoke to one of the owners and the hostess and told them how pleased we were with our experience, we left with a hug and such appreciation from them.
