Strange...just strange. My friend and I were waiting for the Jetty to open for brunch so we thought we would grab a drink somewhere else while we wait. We were even considering other spots for brunch since we weren't married to any particular option. Unfortunately, our experience made us not want to stick around and we ventured on. As we were walking by and peering in to check out the scene, a man standing outside the restaurant with his bike said something like "Go ahead, they're open". It didn't look like he was affiliated with the restaurant but later on it seemed like he knew the DJ. Yes there was a DJ set up by the bar, but they were playing jazz music. Now I love jazz but to me this was a tiny bit odd. I'm use to seeing live jazz on premise. But that was the least of our worries. We then went to order brunch cocktails and they have a great selection. To switch it up a bit and because it was on the menu, we ordered two Bellinis. It felt like it too over a half hour for our drinks. A Bellini is champagne and peach juice/purée. The champagne was poured but it took forever for them to get to finishing our very simple drink. The purée was in the fridge under the bar. Again no they much of a stretch, but it seemed like a tall order. The bar seemed to be run by two people, both a man and a woman. The place itself wasn't crowded but he seemed like the two of them as well as the other staff seemed overwhelmed. We finally got our Bellinis and after waiting an exorbitant amount of time to get these two simple drinks, we were pitched on staying for brunch. This might have been considered if we didn't see the kitchen staff berate the front of the house right in front of customers. It really left a bad taste in our mouth. The Bellini was fine...and as soon as we finished it we dropped some money at the bar and left. Definitely disappointing because it has potential. read more

I came here on Sunday before exploring the beach and chose it after reading several detailed 5-star reviews. I was indeed excited to come here so it pains me to leave them (or any business really) a 2 star review.. it really does. It seems they took over from a former restaurant named Island Thyme early last year, so perhaps they still are experiencing growing pains. There was also a private party going on, so that clearly played a factor in their disorganization. Upon entry, the owner asked if we'd like to eat indoors or outdoors. As I was about to respond, she stated "you'll have to sit outdoors, we have a private party inside." Interesting start. After we were seated, my date noticed most of the staff seemed a bit dejected and I replied "Well in my time as a server years ago, that usually reflects not so great management." Sadly I think I was correct. Our food took at least 45 minutes to arrive. At about the half hour mark, the owner came to the table and said that our food is coming out "right now." We ordered a grilled cheese and a burger, which both came with a side of fries. The burger wasn't too bad (except for an indelible crunchy piece that I had to place into my napkin). The fries on the other hand were most definitely undercooked. I took a few bites of the grilled cheese, which I did find quite tasty. After we finished our meal, we heard the owner tell a table that they are BYOB, so they can feel free to grab a beverage from the deli across the street. That information would definitely have been welcomed, as we could sure have used a drink while waiting for the food. When the owner finally came by to check on us (after we ate), we asked for the check. We then watched as she then greeted new guests for the private party and seemingly forgot about us for over 10 minutes. Luckily, a different waitress noticed the credit card I had placed on the side of the table and asked if we would like our check. Everyone's human and we all have off-days/nights, so while my date was quite frustrated and still hungry (barely ate half her food), I figured you can't win 'em all. Little did I know that the best was yet to come. After having to track down a pen to sign the bill, the owner approached us one last time. "Hey I'm the owner and I just wanted to say... can you leave your tip in cash." All in all, great location, good concept, but definitely a severe lack of execution. More like 3.5 stars. Island Thyme has a great menu, with quality ingredients, and decent service. It's just very overpriced for what you get. I came for a quick dinner and had the hummus trio, and my fiancé and I each made our own quinoa "bowl," which is actually more like a plate. The hummus was freshly made and good. I had salmon as my protein and you can tell it was fresh, not frozen. However, when I order a quinoa bowl I like it when all my veggies are in an actual bowl, on top of quinoa, not on a place with everything next to each other. I like mixing it up with some dressing but I guess this isn't the place for that. My favorite veggie option was the kale with fava beans. Their mushrooms and broccoli were decent. Checked in today around 2:20PM, sat down at a table after speaking to an employee. Ordered our food & an hour later there was no sign of it. Was looking forward to trying their healthy options but it seemed like everything was going wrong for them. The table next to us was complaining heavily as I believe their food took an exorbitant amount of time to arrive at their table. We left an an hour & a half after we walked in & only received water & no food or explanation. I honestly really hate leaving bad reviews, but after today there is no choice... I've been here a few times about a year ago. Supporting a friend who is a singer! She performed here last year and I was super excited to support her and try out a new restaurant So the first time I came about a year ago the service was absolutely horrendous. The owner was extremely rude and pretty much had no idea what she was doing. I was welcomed to a dirty wine glass, but tried to look past since mistakes happen. My friend ordered the flat bread and asked for burrata cheese instead of gorgonzola cheese. When it came out there was both burrata cheese and gorgonzola cheese. My friend told her that they messed up the flatbread and the owner looked at her and said, "what do you want me to do about it?" We all were so taken back by this, because obviously we want you to fix it and do the right thing... Overall the performance was fun but the service was absolutely terrible! Fast-forward to tonight, we came back after them not performing here for a while. It was a short notice for this performance. We were very hesitant to come because of our prior experience here. We obviously came to support our friends performing. The food this time around was pretty good. I got a salad along with my friend. They were good. We were having a good time, although the service was bad. The thing that really got me absolutely disgusted and made me run to Yelp was that as she was preparing desserts she did something unspeakable. She scooped ice cream onto the plate and proceeded to PICK IT UP WITH HER HANDS to scoop it into a ball like it was a meatball... AND THEN SERVED IT..... That is absolutely DISGUSTING. I couldn't believe my eyes. Then to top of off.... Once the bill was given to us, there was a "corking fee" since it's BYOB. We were not aware of this since no one told us... Great food and vibe. A bit drafty, but not an issue if you're there on a summer day. The sauce for the vegan burger should come both already on the burger and on the side bc (while the burger tastes great) it's dry, and the sauce is so delicious that it's great to both have on the burger and to dip the potatoes in-- the little container on the side wasn't enough. read more

INCREDIBLE VEGGIE BURGER ALERT!!!! You guys, I am such a meat fiend. I will find any excuse to eat a burger. And yet, I went out with my dad whose a vegetarian and threw in the towel for a meal and tried the veggie burger. The black bean patty is homemade and huge and thick, creamy, so flavorful. Topped with cilantro and avocado. The bun is a fluffy, perfect brioche kind of bread, and the combo of the patty and beach is irresistible. I love thell design and set up of this place. Very clean, fresh, modern with a beach vibe feel. The hanging plants add a nice touch. I Ordered an Ocean Bowl which was really good. It has goji berries and blueberries on top. My kids both had the hidden carrot mac and cheese. It came with a a few sweet potatoe chips, some slices of apple and a juice box. With that being said, I think they should give kids the option to choose diffwrent sides. The cashier first told me the kids can choose from the sides menu, then was told we couldnt. The sweet potato chips were a little hard to chew for my kids. They werent that crunchy and tasted a little stale. The mac and cheese was good, but the portion was small for what you pay for. Overall its a nice place, but I feel like its a little overpriced. I havent tried the other items on the menu but for the kids meal it I dont think a small bowl of mac and cheese, a few slices of apple and stale chips was worth $8. Quite possibly one of the worst places I have ever *tried* to dine. Sat down around 6pm with my wife, 3 year old, and 2 year old. Glasses dirty, water served and then staff disappeared. Had to beg to put an order in. Left at 730 without eating. Some food was dropped and one kid ate. The rest was "coming right out" but my 3 year old couldn't wait anymore. Took him home to make Mac and cheese. He thanked me for taking him home on our walk back. Place wasn't crowded or we would not have come in with two kids. read more

I wish we had more restaurants like this one. Organic and super fresh food here for really good food. They have a lot of options and I wish I could go there more often to try all of their items. The place itself is super clean and chill. The staff very friendly. I had the harvest bowl with half and half and it was very satisfying. Their coffee is also organic which quite frankly is super important given how much coffee beans are sprayed with insecticides and pesticides. I'll definitely come back. read more

Really wanted to love this place. I ended up going here as a surprise to me, and I immediately recognized the venue because it used to be this other restaurant I was partial to. I guess the business was still trying to figure out how to actually "be" a business and run correctly. Our waitress took our order but failed to mention there was no steak and no turkey bacon left, two different times she had to come over. The service was very slow. Food took 50 minutes to come out. I ordered eggs, pancakes and hash. Nothing special. FYI it is BYOB. No mimosas available lol. read more

My husband and I had the most bizarre experience here today. He passed by this establishment multiple times, and coupled with the wonderful reviews we read on Yelp, we decided to stop in. We probably should have left immediately. It was a little past noon on a Sunday, and there were zero patrons. A woman (server? Owner?) sat at a table in the middle of the restaurant next to a cleaning bucket. We sat at the far end of the restaurant. She brought out breakfast menus for us that were noticeably dirty. She also brought out lunch menus, which basically echoed the breakfast menus (and their cleanliness). Someone else in the kitchen called out that they needed to clean water glasses (no clean glasses?). My husband asked for a seltzer, and she claimed she didn't have any. Someone called from the kitchen that they did, and she appeared with a 1 liter Vintage seltzer and placed it on the table. One glass came out, and mine appeared a few minutes later. There was some caked on food on the outside of the glass, but it wasn't near the rim so I let it slide. We ordered our food, and the woman offered coffee. We obliged. My husband then looked down to his silverware and noticed caked on green food on his knife. When the coffee came, there were particles floating around in the almond milk carafe. That's when we called it, gave money for the seltzer, and left. We were truly afraid of getting sick. The woman told us that she has only been open since November? Based on these reviews, I find this fact a little confusing, considering our experience and noticing echo some earlier reviews. While I hate to write a review like this after such a tough time for business owners, I think prospective diners deserve an accurate depiction of the establishment. read more

It's not how you start, it's how you finish. The service messed up quite a bit and they did not have hummus. But they gave me a black bean burger--one of the best I've ever had. Mom's boyfriend had a steak-delicious. Mom had shrimp. They were very apologetic and made it right. The food made up for the messed up orders out of the kitchen. Every time, they were out of what I ordered or the espresso machine was repeatedly broken. I could see being out of things once, but three times?! One time, I was told the chef wasn't in when I tried to order food. Too late now, but really wish they kept the gorgeous Island Thyme decor. The decor now is a big old mess. I went for brunch last Sunday at 1 pm with a friend. This place had good ratings so decided to try after walking on the boardwalk. When we got there, the place only had 1 table of patrons and only 1 women working the whole front area. Many tables had not been cleaned up. We were sat immediately with no menu. It took the women 10 minutes to give us a menu. Another group of 4 came probably 5-10 minutes after we did. The women was more focused on putting cutlery at empty tables than taking orders or getting the coffee. They got their coffee before we did. When we finally got the food, it was really good. The homemade sausage was amazing. I know restaurants are going through a lot and maybe the women was overwhelmed but what she was focusing on made no sense. The other table of 4 got impatient as well. It took us 1.5 hours there which was ridiculous for how many people were there. I'll give this place another try but I hope next time the front of the cafe is better staffed and the people understand what to focus on. read more

Despite being down a chef and waiting all of 5 minutes longer than we normally would have for our meal, this restaurant was a great choice when out in Long Beach. There is something for everyone, whether you're a millennial and want your avocado toast and a smoothie or just a nice burger. The fan favorite was the black bean burger who's flavor was all there and then some! The buffalo meatballs were an excellent starter as well for the table with their homemade yogurt blue cheese. I don't think I have ever left a single review for a restaurant. I worked in a restaurant and I know that off nights happen but what happened here last night was unbelievable. The staff was unprepared for a single table. They were completely empty, save for one other table. After we ordered, the waitress came to our table and asked me an incoherent question about cheese, stopped mid sentence and walked away. I ordered a vegan dish. They did not tell us before hand that their credit card machine had been down that day; luckily when we got the check we happened to have cash. The check they gave us, however, was not ours. It was the table next to us's check. And when I addressed this, the waitress was annoyed with me saying, exactly, "It wasn't me that gave you that check, but ok". While I waited for the right check, another customer who sat at the bar made inappropriate comments and attempted to touch me and the waitress, right in front of me, just allowed this to happen. Regarding the food. It was fine, except the roasted brussels sprouts, which were cooked unevenly and I could've broken my teeth on them. We were a party of two and they did not bring our dishes together, instead they brought them five minutes apart and the rest of my order didn't come out until 25 minutes later, well into our meal. The only saving grace was the busboy. He was young but he was polite and did his job attending to our table better than the owner or the waitress. First off, the manager, red headed lady, was just very rude and impatient. We were a table of 4, we all ordered burgers, but each one different. 3 out of the 4 burgers were wrong. Now I get mistakes happen, but we were the only ones in the restaurant.... And she got annoyed that we told her the burgers were all wrong. So we just took the meal and took off what we didn't like or swapped some condiments around. Then to add, when it's time to pay our bill, she says she only takes cash or zelle...... This past Sunday I had such an unpleasant visit at The Cafe. First whike being seated the host offered indoor or outdoor seating, while deciding she then said "well we only have outdoor seating". So we sat outside. After taking our oder, I'd say it took about 45 minutes for our food to come. I ordered a grilled cheese and my boyfriend ordered a burger. I'm pretty sure the waitress forgot to put our order in since a family of 4 who was seated after us got their meals first. As for the food totally not worth it. The grilled cheese was not good, but this could be due to my personal preference. However, their home cut fries were served to me raw! They were hard in the middle. I didn't even eat half my meal. No staff ever checked in on how the food was. When we were ready to leave it took another 20 minutes to wait for the check. Then our waitress brings the check and states, "I'm the owner and I don't keep tips I give them to my staff so when you leave tip please leave it in cash." Very unprofessional. I really wanted to like this place after they switched over from Island Thyme but our visit was brutal. When we walked in we immediately noticed dirty tables, glassware and even the windows look like they had never been wiped down. I ordered the avocado toast and after 5 min the waitress (also the owner) came back to the table and said they were out of avocados. At 12 pm? Okay. I settled for the breakfast quesadilla and when it came out guess what? There was a side of avocado. Unbelievable. As we waited for our food we noticed other tables not getting service and complaining to each other. The owner/waitress took down her mask multiple times, was biting her nails behind the counter, and her hands were filthy. I honestly felt uncomfortable the entire time because of the cleanliness of this place. It was overall just a terrible terrible experience. The food was bland, the place dirty, and it's very clear that the owners aren't restaurant people/well versed in the industry. Missing the mark on so many levels. Towards the end of our meal we noticed other unhappy guests leaving their tables without ever having placed an order. I was jealous of them. Needless to say, we won't be back. read more

While visiting my cousin in Long Beach, we stumbled upon this gem of a restaurant. I only wish we had found it earlier on my visit. The food, the service, and the ambience were all amazing. I love big, juicy burgers, but for many years I have been rather skittish about what and how livestock is fed, so I've pretty much given up on them. Various veggie burgers were poor substitutes. Then I noticed Cafe's homemade black bean burger piled high with all sorts of toppings. It looked incredible as did their homemade Parmesan fries. I decided to take a chance. Wow!!! This was no poor substitute; it was one of the tastiest burgers I have ever eaten and the fries were outstanding in every way! My cousin felt the same about her crab cake sandwich. We are both "older" foodies who wish we could have given John and his staff much more than five stars. They truly deserve it - especially at a time when so many other restaurants are increasing their prices while reducing both quantity and quality in all areas. I've been here many times. I do like the food, as it's one of the only healthy options in Long Beach, but there are some issues: 1.) the food is inconsistent. You never know how it's going to be prepared. 2.) the food takes FOREVER to receive (even for a simple single order) and it's cold by the time I eat it. Time management issue by the kitchen staff? 3.) they messed up my order a few times. I never said anything because it felt like more of a hassle than it was worth.
