Really sad to say that we paid $63 for a vegan cake for my daughter's graduation and it was inedible. The cake was so extremely sweet and the icing tasted like pure confectioners sugar. 5 people ended up with stomach aches after having only a very small portion of the cake. I didn't want to write a poor review but when I called the store just to let them know, Robert was a bit defensive while saying that was their recipe for 10 years. Maybe they didn't actually give us a vegan cake, who knows, and at least 2 of the stomach aches were from people with known allergies. I just think it's important to 'put it out there.' Buyer beware. My son requested a cookies and cream cake for his 7th birthday. I usually make our families birthday cakes from scratch but I didn't have the time. Ordering process was easy. Cake was ready for pickup when promised. Cake was small and had a "manufactured" look, which made me nervous about how it would taste. The taste was NOT good. Frosting not good, cake was dry. There was nothing humming about this cake. My 3 kids won't even eat the leftovers. If that's not a telling sign, I don't know what is. Well to be honest, I haven't actually been to this bakery before but I'm sure if I did visit I would have a great experience. I was looking for a nut-free bakery (surprisingly very difficult to find) and was delighted to eventually find one in my own town! It is a hidden little gem in the Copps Hill shops, a little tricky to find but worth the effort. I ventured there a few weekends ago with a girlfriend to sample some mini-cupcakes because I'm thinking of purchasing a special wedding cake for my maid of honor who has a severe nut allergy and subsequently is never able to enjoy wedding cake. I've had many a cupcake at The Cake Box, Swoon's sister bakery which is not nut-free, and was so surprised to find I actually prefer Swoon's cupcakes to theirs! We asked for them to mock one or two cupcakes for us just to make sure that the taste, look, and decorations were doable for them. The mocks were great, so we ordered them for our wedding. It used to be that the cupcakes here were sublime. Tender, light as a feather and perfectly sweet, better than any bakery cupcake. I wonder if they have changed hands? Or changed the ingredients or the process perhaps? Weren't made that day? Whatever the reason, I haven't been here for a few years but went today, and I bought several, and they were nothing like they used to be. I'm so disappointed. They weren't "bad" cupcakes, but they were worlds apart from what they were before, and for that reason I won't trek the half hour drive to get here again to get them. They were borderline dense, on the dry side, and nothing special. The frosting on the sweet & salty one was very nice, but again, the cupcakes overall have been significantly changed. I was concerned by their switch from a dedicated gluten free facility to a joint facility, but nothing has changed. Their cupcakes are still the most delicious you'll ever have, and still entirely safe!! Tested with my Nima before indulging, and was glad to see a smiley face looking back at me. I never give a five rating, but Cake Box so deserves it. We have been bought several items over the past year+ and I am only getting to writing the review. All of the items we purchased have been GF (although you wouldn't know it by the taste) - everything has consistently been excellent. The GF cupcakes are delicious - especially like the Red Velvet, and Chocolate Caramel Truffle - honestly, lots of good flavor options. We recently order the GF Life by Chocolate Cake - huge hit - loved by all. And recently tried the GF pizza dough - surprising easy to work with and really good. Beware, this place is not what it used to be. I have worked for two bakeries in the past. I have been ordering birthday cakes here for three years. I placed an order for a cake this week for an 8 year old girl, and 20 of her friends (I was unsure what size to order and told the person on the phone it would be for 20 eight year olds). I think I was pretty easy and simple in my instructions. Hot pink and purple, hearts, stars, and peace signs to match the party theme. I don't think that is too much to ask, especially as a former cake decorator. When I picked up this $70 creation the day before the party what I was handed was a cake not for an 8 year old, but for an 80 year old. Not a single thing I asked for had been done. Light pink, drab green, and generic flowers. This was not a cake for a child's party. They did not offer to remedy the situation in any way other than allowing me to return the cake if I drove it back to them, but they wouldn't make another one. I live half an hour away, I'm certainly not going to drive another hour total to a place that isn't solving the problem. I will instead drive to another bakery in the morning that is happy to cater to my needs. So much for wanting to please the customer. read more

Initially, when I asked about the price for the 7" custom cake after I described what I wanted on it, I balked! But, I saw the photos they had in the album so I thought it was really worth their price. I was so wrong. I really don't mind paying a lot if the cake was really done well but, this didn't look like it was decorated by a professional! It looked like it was done haphazardly. I was really disappointed and when I talked to the owner, it didn't sound like he was going to change the decoration (he was defensive). I also didn't have time to get another cake elsewhere so I took this with me and just charged this to experience. I totally agree with the other Yelp reviewers. It was really a bad decorating job. Very Bad Experience! They did not deliver what was ordered... the day before an 8 year old's big birthday party. They prepared a really inappropriate cake for an 8 year old! I tried to explain to the management how wrong this order turned out and all he could say was that if we returned the cake he would refund the cost. I asked if he would provide another cake and he said "No". Obviously, we were stuck with a cake intended for a 90 year old, not an 8 year old! There was no apology for the mistake made by the person who took the order, who apparently did not write up the order correctly. The owner, co-owner, was rude and could care less about it. The Cake Box baked our wedding cake and it was FANTASTIC! They did a vanilla cake with fresh strawberries and vanilla buttercream. We left the frosting off the outside and called it an "Open face Strawberry Shortcake". The cake was DELICIOUS and so fresh! Robert estimated the number of slices perfectly, arrived when he said he would, and the cake was lovely. I had provided a photo for inspiration and they matched my photo exactly!! Cake Box was also kind enough to provide the same flavor gluten-free cupcakes from Swoon for our gluten-free guests. Really happy with our wedding cake and service that we received from Cake Box!
