I love basically everything from cakeroom. I ordered a german chocolate cake for myself for my birthday and it was so good. Not too sweet and cocoa-y and moist and liberal frosting. We still have some in freezer and eat it with ice cream. Ive had cookies, brownies, and cupcakes from there too and always been good. They also always have a few cakes for walk in pick up so you can use them as a last minute/day-of option, which is great. We did that recently--reserved an oreo cake same day. They had a bunch of standard flavors available like yellow cake with chocolate frosting, etc. so it is definitely one of the more convenient higher end/quality bakeries in DC. read more

Ordering a custom cake from The Cakeroom was, without question, the best cake ordering experience I've ever had. My friend was facing a birthday milestone, so we wanted to do a Madonna theme (since he's a super fan). The guy at the counter explained that they are able to laser print any image onto the top of the cake, and so we decided to do a photo of one of her early album covers. He then patiently talked through the options of the cake itself, and we decided on chocolate cake with buttermilk frosting and sliced strawberries in the frosting. It tasted delicious (people at the party talked about it for days) and as u can see from the photo, it turned out perfect! I should also mention that when I emailed Cakeroom with the photo the day after ordering it, the manager was very responsive on email. Actually he said he loved the image--so it felt like they actually were excited to make this cake. All in all, was a fun experience! read more

First of all - the cake was delicious!! We ordered a cake from here for an event and it turned out beautiful, and super tasty - even days later. The service, however, left a lot to be desired. Everyone I spoke to acted like they were doing me a huge favor in fulfilling my order (which was quite standard, nothing fancy). I had an idea of the theme I wanted for this cake design but was otherwise pretty flexible. The website told me to call the store, when I called and gave the order, I was instructed to send the order via email. I sent the email and they responded asking me to order via the website, which I duly did. So ordering the cake took three attempts and about 30 minutes. Then they couldn't do the design I wanted in Buttercream, and were unwilling to explore other designs, so we went with Sugar Paper. When we went to pick up the cake, on our way to the event, it wasn't ready and they were not apologetic about it. We waiting about 10-15 minutes so that wasn't a big deal but after buying an expensive cake, a sorry would have been nice. Everyone loved the cake, so it's a pity the ordering process was difficult. It was a gorgeous, massive red velvet cake that was beautifully decorated. It was moist and delicious, with a delicious buttercream frosting (maybe cream cheese? But not overwhelming). I use to love this place but sadly they have gone totally down hill and I can no longer recommend it. I've been ordering cakes since they opened as I live down the street and it' very convenient. I am mad at myself for ordering a cake this year for my daughters birthday after last year's fiasco of not having the cake available after ordering and paying for it a week earlier. When I arrived to pick up the cake I was told that they forgot to make it. What?! They did end up delivering it to the restaurant but it was so late that most of the guests had left. After spending $100 on a cake I also now had to tip the Uber guy. I was desperate this year because I had too much going on so I decided to order again this year (shame on me). The cake was so dry and for whatever reason the cake had some odd cream in the middle of the cake. In addition, after ordering they called me a hour later to ask for another $6 for color icing. They also asked if I wanted to leave a tip for the cake decorator. I did not have any decorations on the cake so why would they ask that? I think it's very tacky that they couldn't eat the $6 or tell me when I ordered it that it would cost additional for colored icing. For $82 I got a basic cake with no design or flowers etc. It was actually terrible especially the icing and the nasty filling that I did not ask for. I recommend going to Harris Teeter or Giant for a basic cake like what I got. But at least you'll get a fresh cake that isn't dry with weird filling in the middle! Never again. Trying to support small local businesses but they make it hard. Sad that it has gone down hill so much. Seems like they just don't care anymore. I have attached a picture of a piece of the cake and I have no idea why they put a filling in the middle and why so thick. It tasted so nasty. My guests thought it looked really odd and not one person liked it!! A waste of $82. read more

I wish I caught the name of the young lady at the front, she was great! You'll find it hard to miss the bright pink store front of The Cakeroom. I ordered a 6" vanilla birthday cake that was very well received. I got a lemon square on the way out and for only $3 it tasted fresh and I wish I got 2 of them. Given the cute decorations, very straightforward ordering process, and great taste I'd say it was worth the $50 for a high quality birthday cake. I think it could feed 6-8 adults easily. If you're with friends who have less of a sweet tooth, you could get ~10 reasonable pieces. Pair it with some ice cream and invite me so I can have some too! read more

Customer service makes or breaks an experience and in this case, the Cakeroom will not get my business again! I ordered a cake for a baby's birthday. Total human error (and if you have a baby, you know brain fog/sleep deprivation is REAL), I put the wrong pick up date down and did not realize it was done until I got an email about pick up! I called the store and was advised to email as the manager was not there and the person on the phone could not assist. As the cake was made, I went to the store to get it and also hopefully speak to someone. My cake...was sliced up and half was already sold. I was not told this! So I had paid in advance for my cake (and those cakes are $$$) and did not receive a cake. The manager finally responded to my email around 1 in the morning saying they could remake the cake if I paid again. I never received the cake and I didn't receive my money back! Days after I responded pointing out I didn't receive a cake for my money, they finally responded to my email saying they had recouped most of the costs from my cake and would remake it if I paid them 30$ extra dollars. Guys, that means I would pay almost 140$ for a cake. No. Just no. Would totally advise going elsewhere for a cake particularly for a celebration! Recently came here to grab some cupcakes for my birthday celebration. I wasn't sure what to get so I opted for a mixed dozen and a couple of extra cupcakes on the side. Honestly, it was more of an excuse to try so many of their different flavors! Some of my faves were strawberry, their lemon lavender, and seasonal October flavor. It was absolutely decadent and richer than Jeff Bezos. 10/10 would order it again. The red velvet cake was done very well. It was smooth and had some delicious creamy icing. We got a vegan cookies and cream cupcake and that was also delicious. It was moister than an oyster and tasted like the real thing. The cookies were HUGE and amazing. I ordered a large cake and a cheesecake for my grandmother's 82nd birthday party.  After the party, we called our family to see how the cake was and the complaints were endless: - they could not tell that it was a strawberry cake, there was zero strawberry flavor, which we paid extra for - there were not strawberries between the cake layers, which we also paid extra for - the cake had a weird consistency, not like cake at all and seemed to have been either over or undercooked - the cake was NOT EDIBLE This is very embarrassing to us because this was a birthday party that was rescheduled due to Covid (her 80th) and we had 50 family members in attendance and this was the only traditional cake at the party.  Since we weren't able to attend the event, we wanted to go all-out and get her a really nice cake and we are mortified with the cake we purchased from this bakery.  At the price point ($170), this is just unacceptable. I emailed management to voice my concerns and request a refund and they instead offered me a 20% discount on my next purchase - as if I would ever patron this business again!!! Was strolling around on a Sunday afternoon and my friends mentioned the CakeRoom for dessert. This place smells so good. Ever walk into a dessert place and just want to stand there, close your eyes, and inhale? That is exactly what I did. It felt like home. The lady working was so nice and we chatted a bit about the different cookies (there is a check-in offer via Yelp for a free cookie) and the cupcake selections. We ordered the following: the oatmeal raisin toffee cookie, carrot cake cupcake, lemon lavender cupcake, coconut cupcake, and a slice of the red velvet cheesecake. We devoured the cookie...okay, I devoured the cookie on the walk back to the apartment, but I did share. It was chewy but not too soft and there was a bit of a crunch. The toffee was light without it being gooey or too sweet. Perfect. Of the cupcakes, the lemon lavender was our least favorite. The flavors just didn't seem balanced and tasted off. We all loved, loved the carrot cake cupcake. This one seems made without pineapple but was still moist and the cream cheese frosting was just right. The red velvet cheesecake was like a mousse and we didn't care for it. I particularly enjoyed the coconut cupcake but we voted the carrot cake cupcake as the best of the bunch. Prices were fair, actually slightly lower than most places ($2.75 ea) and they do have custom cakes for order and delivery. Definitely worth a return visit. read more

From cookies, to cake to coffee to cups cakes and tarts and more this is a must stop. You can share a slice with two people, but honestly you'll likely want to keep the whole thing to yourself. The options include a limited option of you have dietary restrictions, to be super clear about that. This is a full on, flour using, milky, egg heavy type of sweet. It's amazing. Service at this place on a recent friday evening was great. The one guy working there was very nice and helpful. The prices are reasonable for cakes and cupcakes and i would definitely go back. Maybe it was because of the time of day of because of the recent hot temperatures that can affect the taste and chew of baked goods, but felt that our cupcakes were not springy and a bit gummy. I was leaving D.C. and needed something sweet to say goodbye. So I made a trek out here in the scorching sun just to get some cupcakes and cookies. I will admit the free cookie with check in caught my attention out of the countless dessert places in town, so good job! Turns out, their cookies are the million dollar babies. They are huge (see photo against my palm for reference) and they are incredibly soft and chewy-just the way I like my cookies. They are also THICK. They aren't like the cheap large supermarket cookies but rather, have texture and feel substantive with every bite. I got some chocolate chips and some nutella ones. I highly recommend you get yourself some of these goodies. I also got the salted caramel cupcake after asking the man working there when they had made it. He didn't seem to know the answer and guessed that it was probably made that morning. It made me uneasy and I was ready to call him out if the cupcake tasted stale but luckily, it ended up being fine. I do urge the staff to know when the batches are made because it could end up losing customers, both for stale cupcakes and also for feeling lied to. I recommended this place since I love their cake and two of my friend couples got their wedding cakes from here after my recommendation. I call the store to set up a tasting because we want to order our wedding cake and want to see the different flavors. The guy on the phone says they probably won't have time but i can come in and purchase som slices if I want to know what it tastes like. I asked if I am supposed to spend around 1000$ on cakes without sampling and he said again that I am free to come in and buy some slices to try. They either need to train the people who answer the phone better or reconsider their business model. Never buying from here again. read more

I ordered a cake for 130 USD for my daughter's birthday party. On the day of the party, they had forgotten to make the pre-paid cake and said they would do it within 30 mn. I specifically asked if it would be a freshly made cake. The cake looked good but turned out to be very dry and tasted stale by account of several invitees - clearly not freshly made. I told the owner about the state of the cake, that it was not up to the standards of the price I paid and I expected to receive partial reimbursement (not even full) considering the mess up and cover up. Instead of apologizing, he turned out of control, became so angry and aggressive that I would dare make this request, claiming all his cakes were fresh and up to standards and became so antagonistic that I had to block him off from my email.
