This place looks so cool the food is almost beside the point. I've never seen a more beautiful view. There is outdoor seating on a dock and lots of seating with views in the pub side as well as the dining room side. The decor inside is lovely and comfortable even if you don't get a table with a view. The food is also great. What can I say? This is absolutely my favorite bar ever. I was living out in Hawaii a couple months back, saw a kid out there wearing a Kidd shirt and almost hugged him. I grew up with this place, had some of my first awkward, drunken moments here, and have never yet managed to be kicked out, so admittedly I'm a bit biased. The place is frequented by a lot of the Marine Biological Laboratories Staff, both local and summering twenty-somethings, and older crowds who are laboring under the delusion that they will get a nice meal there. Don't buy in to the restaurant part. The bar-food and pizzas are great, but after so many rounds so is anything edible put in front of you. What makes this place so great is that it's consistently busy on weekends throughout the Summer, you get to sit on barrels around huge wooden tables, and the atmosphere's a lot more chummy than any of the places over in Pocasset. Beyond the fact you feel mildly like a pirate stepping into the place, one of the most unique things about the bar is the Harpoon special. The Harpoon Brewery releases a keg of a select beer variety to just a few bars throughout the state each month and the Kidd is one of those lucky few. Between the IPA and the Hef that they put out they can almost do no wrong in my book, and their specialties are always something to look forward to. So just make sure you make eye contact with the bartenders when you order something and they'll treat you decent. Bring two forms of ID just in case the bouncer's feeling like being a prick, and remember that this is New England. We're never nice to anyone until after a few. read more

What a fabulous night I had at this restaurant! I had two friends in from Ohio and after a recommendation from a local we went here. Now, I am a New Englander through and through. Probably to a fault. And I take where we live for granted sometimes. But even I thought the scenery was outstanding. Right on the water, with sunset happening. Outstanding! I ordered some drink off of the menu that I forget the exact name right now. Something about a sparkling rose? It had prosecco and elderflower in it. This girl is a big fan of elderflower drinks. But after some confusion I hadn't received my drink. I ordered another...but to make a long story short they ended up making me an off menu drink. It was very pretty! And VERY yummy! So yummy in fact that this very cheap girl ordered three over the course of the night. At $11 a piece! That really doesn't happen. Ever. But I think I got carried away with the food and the company and the atmosphere. Anyways. They did lose a star. And it had nothing to do with our waiter mind you, he was fabulous. ( I wish I could remember his name, but he had been born in Martha's vineyard and had moved to NYC if anyone from the restaurant is reading this and cares-blond hair) You know how some people are just really good at their jobs? That was him. Anyways, it had nothing to do with him, it was the food. Which was not terrible by any stretch. My thing is, that I can forgive the prices if the food is outstanding. Buuuut, my fries were delicious but lukewarm, and even when we got another side of fries, they were lukewarm as well. My friend found sand in his shellfish. we weren't really taken with the cole slaw. Ya know, small things like that. Enough to complain? Aside from the fries certainly not. I hadn't been here in a while, but paid a visit here this past weekend and it's totally renovated - modernized and the menu is updated, and everything was fantastic! We sat outside on the deck, ordered a grilled cheese for my son, which arrived in minutes. I got the crab burger, which was giant and full of fresh crab, and my husband got the clam roll, which I tried and loved. Even the tartar sauce was awesome - huge chunks of pickles in it. We splurged for dessert and tried the chocolate lava cake, which was ridiculously indulgent for a mid-afternoon treat, but we devoured every last morsel of it -phenomenal. My family has been coming here for years and I only have wonderful things to say about this establishment. Whether you are seated inside or outside, the ambiance simply can not be beat. To add to that, their food is absolutely outstanding. As a somewhat obsessive healthy eater, my go-to is the Kale Salad with lobster on top... it's amazing! My one and only complaint would be that their choice of music during the day is super lame. A place like this should be playing Bruce, CCR, the Beatles... not drake at 1pm on a Saturday afternoon. We are locals in Falmouth and use to frequent this place. We had not been there since the Fall. The Owners of the once Leeside and Captain Kidd Restaurant sold the Leeside and invested all in the Kidd. This place is definitely not the same. The chowder is different. They have tried to make it an upscale place, however the service was some of the worst we have received. I dine all over the country on a regular basis, and have not received such lousy service. The Management should get a clue and hire some staff that are friendly and serve food with a passion and a smile. Murray, our server yesterday, acted like we were putting him out just for being there. I new something was up when I heard the table next to ours talking negative about our same waiter. Our family used to like coming here, but I will do my best to steer people away from this place. We use to dine here because of its great chowder and service. It was a great place to come in the Winter or any time of the year. I will also be making sure the Falmouth Chamber of Commerce is aware. It's important for people like Jay Zavala and Michael Kasperian to know this, so they don't embarrass themselves by recommending it to visitors and towns people. Sadly, we will not be going back to the Captain Kidd Restaurant. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. read more

Food is OK, service is OK. Sometimes its a little better than OK, sometimes its a little worse. You can certainly do worse on Cape Cod (and worse just in Woods Hole). But not worth making a trip for. But its mid-range and if you don't want to spend too much and youre in WH it's OK. read more

While on vacation in Woods Hole, Captain Kidd was recommended to me, and when I got to the restaurant I was entirely disappointed. The bartender was extremely rude to me when I asked if they had cider on tap and then when I came back two hours later with a friend, we waited almost 20 minutes for someone to seat us but no one came; even though two waitresses were sitting right in front of us and the bartender was looking right at me. I asked one of the waitresses if she could seat us and she said it wasn't her job. Also was entirely turned off by the decor, very blah. Yeah, not a place I was pleased by at all! read more

I've been going to the kidd for more than 10 years. Food has never been good nor has service. But last night was the last time iwill ever go. Was with a party of 8 and sadly had to give an 18% tip for worst service ever. Nasty young waitress, food was tasteless, everything- fish, shepherds pie, pizza, chicken. Fries were soggy and old. This place had become a sad, unappealing dump. There is clearly no management, and they just don't care about it. What a pity. I won't be back and neither will most of MBL. I have this one star because no stars isn't an option. I had a business lunch on Friday, which happened to also be St. Patrick's Day. This restaurant was suggested by my dining companion who works in the neighborhood and it was my first time there. We arrived before noon to find the restaurant almost full. We had to sit at a table in the bar and still had a decent view of the water. We were waited on quickly by the bartender and it went downhill quickly from there. We ordered edamame as an appetizer. After 15 minutes we inquired about it and was told that some had called in sick so the kitchen was backed up. When it was delivered it was overcooked so much that you couldn't eat them they intended way. Just a few moments later, our entrees arrived. I ordered the corned beef and cabbage special that was to come with a creamy horseradish sauce and Irish soda bread. When Neither were delivered with my meal, I asked about the sauce and was told that no one had made it. I offered to mix it myself if they would bring me sour cream and horseradish. They delivered the sauce mixed a few minutes later. The corned beef was the saltiest I ever tasted and couldn't be finished. I won't be back. Poor service + poor food = poor review. read more

We were greeted by a rude hostess which was surprising because we are locals, and are used to the comfortable inviting atmosphere in most small establishments on Cape Cod. The server was very non-challant and had an attitude with us. We came here with out of town guests hoping to give them the Cape Cod waterfront dining experience, and were deeply disappointed. The food was sub par, we paid a steep price for a dish of mussels and at least a third of them weren't even edible. The shells were still closed. I'm in full agreement with Tom - this place WAS the real deal & I miss the old Kidd! I love the location, the history, the staff and will even accept the decor updates from last year, although I don't think Falmouth needed another updated restaurant with high tables and bolstered benches. I've spent a lifetime of summers on Cape Cod at our cottage on Jenkins Pond and my family knew that once we landed in town, it was off to the Kidd. Too many years ago....I was sitting on the bench near the hostess station enjoying a beer one Friday evening while waiting for our table to free up (my wife & the kids were across the street walking through a craft fair in the fire house). A group of guys walk in to have a beer, they were killing time waiting for the ferry to MV and were trying to decide if they should stay there or not. I interrupted and told them that this was the place to be and asked the bar tender to show them the picture that used to hang on the wall behind the bar. It was a black & white photograph of one of the hurricanes years ago when water in the bar was knee deep and THEY KEPT SERVING! Long ago the picture had been pulled off the wall and stuck in a drawer - when they saw that they agreed they should stay. A few days later when we stopped in again, the bartender told me that they had stayed until the whistle was blowing for the last ferry and almost missed it. There are few places in this world where you can walk in & feel like you belong, that are original and un-apologetic for themselves - this was one of them. There were cards on one of the corner tables if you wanted to hang out & play, the kids would play hangman on the back of the place-mats or draw with crayons and there was a laptop with WIFI if you HAD to check your e-mail. The Disney-esc mural on the wall can stay, even the tall benches, but one TV will do - this isn't the ESPN Zone. We don't care about the bathrooms or slightly slow service (we have no schedule) but please give us back the old menu with the platters of belly clambs, the fat burgers, and the fried shrimp - save the fancy stuff for the people on the other side. I only hope somebody who gets to make the decisions there sees this and realizes that you had it right the first time! read more

Good but not special cuisine in a pleasant setting at a fairly high price. We had ceviche and fish tacos. Both, especially the ceviche, would have been improved by (much) more lime juice and some cilantro or other fresh herbs. We ordered seafood combos which had shrimp and scallops that were good but the clams and fish were not. Initially we were seated in a section of the restaurant that was so crowded the chairs could not be accessed. We are not large people. The hostess brought over a chair that look like a wooden beer keg with no side arms or back. So we asked to sit closer to the door where there were some tables. We had not been told that there was no server working this part of the restaurant or that the bartender served this area. As it was all part of the same dining room, we had no idea. Our order was taken fairly quickly and the food came very fast. But we never saw anyone again. I needed a drink refill but was S.O.L. The bartender & several workers passed by our table, yet no one would make eye contact. After 20 to 25 minutes had passed, i put the stopwatch on my phone. After 13 MORE minutes, someone finally noticed our posture-chin on hands, elbows on table and dishes cast aside-and asked if we needed anything. No apologies for the poor service were made, but he did have the barkeep bring the check. When we mentioned the poor service again he said "well if you had sat where we put you in the first place, this wouldn't of happened. There's no waiter here and I've been busy" I couldn't believe it! I had been a server in my college years & couldn't believe this is what I was being told. The name and the view are awesome here...however, the service seems sort of subpar when you are only going in for drinks. The 3 times I have been in the servers have very stringent about who gets tables with window views (only if you get dinner)...even when the place is not full. Food was okay, but I think the fishmonger (right across the street) is more delicious and more comfortable. --I like not having to feel guilty asking for a window! read more

The only thing positive I can say about the Captain Kidd is the atmosphere - appropriately nautical and not too loud. Unfortunately though the food and service were terrible. I ordered the smoked scallops which tasted unnatural and overly smoked and were served with "roasted vegetables" which were burnt and flavorless. I would have sent the dish back had I not been a guest. My husband's swordfish was at least edible, but mediocre and the dinner special, tortellini with pesto, was undercooked and gloppy. Our server was incompetent and mostly absent despite a half full restaurant. So disappointed. read more

Where to begin, I don't think I have been to the Kidd since last summer and was a bit shocked when I walked in and it had gone through a renovation. I have to say I LOVED IT! It was very comfortable. I was with my family and we requested sitting on the deck, there was a small wait but I wasn't in a hurry and decided to wait for a table to open. 10 minutes later we were seated and immediately greeted by our server. She knew the menu, I asked her a few questions and told her my daughter was picky. She talked to my 7 year old and her and my 7 year old decided she was having pizza. My daughter ate the pizza and really liked it and there was some left to take home. I have always loved the Kidd's burgers so I decided to get one. It was different than I remembered and when I asked the server she said they are not the same as in the past. I asked for it medium and it came out medium. I really enjoyed it. My husband had the grilled tuna steak. He said it was very good and had a nice kick to it, I'm not a seafood person so I will take his word for it. We decided to split the chocolate lava cake for dessert and it was unbelievable! As I mentioned above our server greeted us as soon as we sat down. I loved that when I told her my daughter was picky she talked to my daughter giving her ideas and telling my daughter that she was picky too and what she liked and didn't like. She came by a few times to check on us and refilled our drinks. She was very friendly. I also noticed that the other servers seemed to laugh and joke around with each other which was nice, it gives it a nice feeling that the place isn't a stuffy place and customers along with the people that work there are relaxed/easy going. Came to this place because we were in Woods Hole for the day. We ordered the clams, shrimp and oysters for an appetizer which were good and fresh. For lunch I ordered the chicken sandwich which was supposed to be chicken with a dry rub and slaw on a bun with cheese. My sandwich came without any dry rub or slaw and looked like a glorified grilled cheese with a huge chicken breast. My fries were cold and with only 2 of us ordering food this was unacceptable. My friend for the lobster roll which was good, but for $25 we could have gone somewhere else where we would both have been happy with our meals. Overall this place has a great view but the food seems tired and needs work. With a relatively smaller menu there should be no reason to be messing up simple orders. Ordered the crab guacamole and fish and chips, both were horrendous. The guacamole tasted rancid, the crab was really dry and tasteless, and the fish was overcooked. The only edible thing were the fries; all this for $40. The service was almost as bad as the food, the staff was friendly but they were extremely slow and rarely came to my table. I am a new customer and so far I have enjoyed my late night visits at the Captain, I usually enjoy a meal before the kitchen closes. Each time I have not been disappointed by the food. Along side my meal I always enjoy a drink from the bar. Recently however, I started to cut my visits at the bar due to one of your bartenders. I'm pretty sure he is new, that still doesn't mean he can be rude to me when I ask for my dink after I wait patiently for it. The most off putting thing about his service is the way he makes his mixed drinks, it's as if he rushes them and doesn't care. I believe he should go through training again and change his attitude, otherwise you'll lose customers due to his lack of manners. read more

I didn't expect the service to be hurried in the off season especially with so few people there. Usually the service is laid back and the place relaxing. Not today. We just left the Kidd. The location is always great with a beautiful view but that is really the only thing good about it. The service is horrendous (really the worst I have had in a long time). The food was mediocre. They do not understand the concept of having appetizers, then salad and then your entree. Pretty much all our food came out at the same time which is extremely annoying. How can you eat it all at once? We are locals and live in Falmouth. There are many other restaurants in town that are well worth the money. Not so much with he Kidd read more
