Walked in and quickly needed a couple bottles of wine or a gift. The gentleman that works here quickly pointed me to a couple incredible wines that were also beautifully packaged. Before leaving he also put me onto some awesome Japanese whiskey I've never heard of. Rude and racist. Do not support this business. Came here looking for a bottle of Cab. I tell the guy working there (I think his name is Mike) that, and the first thing he says is "we don't carry a lot of low price point stuff." The moment I walked in I could just feel he wanted me out of there as soon as possible. He shows me one option without saying anything about the body or the notes, basically take it or leave it. I go to check out, he asks for my card and ID which I hand to him, as any respectable person would. He looks at my ID then tosses it on the counter towards me like it's a frisbee, does the same with my debit card. Bags the wine and then rushes to douse his hands in hand sanitizer. I checked this place out at lunch, today, based on the online selection they display on their website. I don't think they had a single bottle in stock that they listed. I was told they're remodeling, so their stock is limited. You might say that. Maybe 25 bottles of whisky, total. Got some lame excuse about how Google doesn't update their website or something. Okay. But I headed over there to buy a specific bottle, and not only do you not have it, or many other choices, but you don't do anything to retain my business? Too bad. I collect scotch, bourbon, and wine. I buy a ton of it. And my company just moved to the neighborhood. Missed opportunity for them, I guess. I won't be returning. read more

Honestly I don't know what to do here. I hate to write a bad review for a newish, independently owned shop, but there are a lot of things wrong with the Cask. I REALLY wanted to love the place. I finally stopped in on a weekday. Mike, the owner was there. I was really excited to chat him up, as in a former life I was married to someone who kept kosher so I drank and tasted a lot of kosher wine. Now, I'm not trying to be a snob, but when I asked about specific wines, not only did the owner not seem interested in chatting (there wasn't anyone else in store when I got there), he also didn't seem to be familiar with any of the simple wine terms I was using (I was asking about the oak and the mouthfeel), therefore rendering his help in picking a wine completely useless. Additionally, he highly recommended (nearly promising I'd love it even after I told him my reservations about chardonnay) a chardonnay (Odem Mountain Volcanic Chardonnay 2010) that bills itself as dry, but upon opening was WAYYYYYY over extracted, oaky, and most oddly--sweet. I mean really sweet. Like that gross blue-bottle moscato that your grandma drinks at Passover kinda sweet. A total waste of $20+ bucks. This is all topped off by the fact that there are *31* (seriously) filtered reviews for the shop, nearly all of which have only 1-3 reviews, perhaps because a yelper wrote a quick tip stating "Free bottles of wine for a rave review on Yelp!". That's a clear violation of Yelp's terms of service (read part 6 a if you don't believe me). It's too bad, too, because the space is really nice and there's a great-looking tasting room in the back. Perhaps if the folks who work there/own it spend some time learning about their products and stop compensating people for reviews, I'll return. Until then, I think my 2nd stars are generous. read more

I went the The Cask tonight for their grand opening and was very impressed! They have a great selection especially with Israeli wines. The owners Sivan and Mike are great people who are always willing to help out their customers in any way they can. The Scotch selection is aMAYzing too!!! Clean and slick looking store. They have a nice selection of wines but note they are all Kosher wines. The alcohol selection is not very big but they have top shelf bottles including scotch, bourbon and tequila. Prices are reasonable but no big sales. Interesting idea for a hip liquor store but I don't know that it really works. They have some selections but not everything you could or might be looking for. Not certain if I was dealing with the owner or the help there but had some attitude. They do have parking in the back but not certain (especially if you are lady) that you really want to park in a seedy looking alley. the street parking is there but of course you have to plug a meter over and over again. They also sponsor events but I have heard from a friend that they are tight on the pouring and leave early(these are not always free events!!) Check it out and use your own judgement here. read more

While visiting from Philadelphia I stopped by The Cask, twice -- that's how great it is! The wine selection is wonderful - lots of vintages I had not seen before with a wide price range. I also bought a fantastic bottle of Scotch, based on the recommendation of the staff. It is a beautiful store, great service and your purchase is handed to you in an elegant gift bag. I am the owner of BarTime and have been in business for 12 years. It's unfortunate that Mike, the owner, who is very professional has gotten bad reviews. I've gone to Mike a few times to purchase Kosher wines when I was in a jam and Mike has always been easy to deal with. The clients that I have can be very particular and Mike has always taken the time to give me good advice on which wines I should purchase. At the end of the day, The Cask is an easy, professional nice store with a great lay out and great atmosphere. Went here just after their opening b/c I live in the neighborhood and I love wine. It's a great little niche business they'e got here. Kosher wine and spirits in this area will have to be a success!! The owner was nice enough to spend about 20 minutes talking to me and showing me around the store. They were also in the process of building out their tasting room as well as a wine storage area. The gentleman there helped me pick out a nice sauvignon blanc for a family lunch and it was delicious. Remarkably uptight staff for a new store with a lot of local competition. I saw this new store in my neighborhood, and decided to stop in. I found an interesting rum that I wanted to try that was around $15.00. I get to the counter and want to pay by credit card, clerk asks for my ID, and then refuses to sell to me because my ID is expired (I'm 45). Now I could understand this if I was 22 or was buying a $190 bottle of scotch... but I'm bought booze with this ID and my credit card at just about every liquor store west of Fairfax. I have never had a clerk give me 'tude about my ID, even at stores in high crime areas, like along venice blvd, or chain stores with strict termination policies in regards to under age sales (such as Walgreen's, Ralphs, BevMo). If you want a good selection without an attitude, try one of the other much more friendly merchants in our neighborhood such as Bargain City, Vendome, or Beverly Hills liquor. read more

Pretty great selection at pretty decent prices. They can usually source whatever you'd like. Although, to point out, I have at times been able to just purchase the wine directly from winery for cheaper. Depending on how much you're buying it is worth looking into. Finding high quality wine in Los Angeles is difficult. While Baron Herzog is plentiful, it's hard to locate a good selection of quality wines from outside of California. Enter the Cask. The selection is excellent, the proprietor is helpful and knowledgeable. There is a small selection of high quality single malts and other spirits. The person who answered the phone was beyond curt and rude. Coming from the Washington DC area, where there's limited choices for kosher wine consumers, I really wanted to visit The Cask in my last trip to LA. I thought that the store was nice, with a good selection of interesting wines that I can't get at home. I bought a Bravdo Shiraz, which I served at Shabbat dinner with lamb-stuffed mini peppers, and it was a hit. I did not have the problem that some of the other reviewers had, of not knowing what to buy, since I really love Israeli wines. I felt that I had a better knowledge of many of the better wineries than the store guy did, on the day I was there. The wine guy over at Glatt seemed more knowledgeable, when I was wine shopping there. (Hey, I'm probably moving to LA soon - maybe I should apply for a job!? ) but bottom line, I like to support stores that carry a good selection of kosher wines - especially Israeli ones - so I will go back there again.
