Went to Cask last night to celebrate my bday! Everything was perfect, nice table by the outside heater, the Caesar salad was good and the romaine was very crispy, the fish tacos were excellent with just the right amount of spices, the Grilled octopus was cooked to perfection, served with a tasty bell pepper purée, watercress, baby corn and tomatoes. We recently went back to Cask and had a fantastic experience there. Great food and outstanding service! The outdoor dining is surrounded by fire lamps/ heaters. As we were waiting for a table they gave us a glass of wine on the house, that was "amazing". Our server, Luciano ( not sure of the spelling, sorry!) was incredible. My Pinot Noir wine flight was basically 3 full size glasses and the $16 Barbeque Prawn appetizer was hearty, surprisingly sophisticated, and crazy full of flavor. I know this reference will be lost on just about everyone but if you're from Chicagoland they're the closest I've tasted to Russell's Barbecue sauce flavor in years. Crazy good, despite the plate not being the most attractive at first glance. The wine flight was $24 which is more than I would normally spend on groceries for a week, but it had been a loooong day and I was thirsty and in the end it ended up being a great value with the trio of extra generous pours. Probably fine for a date but the bar is nice to go alone and check out what's on the TV behind the bar (probably some crappy CBS show, but maybe 60 Minutes if you're lucky) or read a book if you're into that and don't just subscribe to an audiobook app so you can pretend like you actually read a book. read more

I had my hesitations about this place after calling to make a dinner reservation (left a VM), and never heard back from them to confirm. After being stuck in traffic for almost an hour, I definitely needed some vino. It was all worth it because I knew I was meeting up with my gal, Jeannette, and the evening was definitely going to get better. We met up for our usual catchup gab and food feast. A friendly hostess greeted us, and (found out that they only take ressies for 6 or more). I was immediately digging the ambiance. It wasn't too crowded (yet) and we sat by the window. After several minutes of staring at the menu, we decided to each have our own salads (mine was the Arugula salad with goat cheese) and easily choose the following: CHEESE: Cambozola with apricots and medjool dates, Pecorino -Gran Cru with white truffle honey, Aged gouda with tomato chutney MEATS: Calabrese salame served with birra infused whole grain mustard, Serrano ham served with rustic bread and olive oil, Prosciutto di Parma aged 16 months, with roasted shallot confit. Meats were tender and delish. The cheeses weren't smelly and tasty! I wish there were little tags on the cheeses and toppings so we knew exactly what was what. It was fun experimenting with the different combos, and to quote J, "I don't know what the hell that combo was, but it was damn good. Oh wait, look, I have another bite of it left here!" My favorite cheeses were definitely the goat and the aged gouda. The fig jam was accidentally given to us, but it didn't matter because we loved it anyway. That and the white truffle honey were to die for. Yummy! My (Meritage/Blend) Hannah Nicole, Madera wine was superb. (Surprisingly, I limited myself to one glass-hard to believe, I know. I'm on antibiotics, had a long day at work, and had drive back to SF, etc., -- cut me some slack, ok?). They have hot items like flatbreads, pasta, and a few more. - BBQ shrimp: didn't expect much from a wine-centric establishment, but this was some legit tasty New Orleans style BBQ shrimp. 4 plump shrimp are poised on top of with the flavorful sauce covering the bottom of the plate. We came in around 11:45am on a Friday, and there was plenty of seating at that time. I came here with a friend for a late nite snack. It turned out that it is more of a wine bar than a restaurant that serves small dishes known as tapas. Luckily, we were able to get a seat right away. A plus when you are in dire need of a good glass of wine and some appetizers. The place is small and cozy with a good size bar with such a large selections of wine. You name it they probably have it. It is a great place to have a girls nite out and/or a get together with friends. It has that kind of look and feel of a classy place to have small talks and a fine bottle or glass of wine. Their small dishes were delectable and makes great dish to pair up with your wine selections. Their breads are wonderful and fresh. Something that I always look for whenever there are servings of bread. I would have to say this is one of the better ones. Their services are good and they are always there to assist you with finding the right pairing as well as the best quality wine selections to choose from. After a grueling day hike, my husband and I decided on The Cask for a late lunch/early dinner. It was the best decision we ever made. I love that the staff was warm and very welcoming! I ordered the Linguini with Clams, Mussels and Salmon (minus the prawns) with marinara sauce. I am pleased that they actually listened to the fact that I was allergic to prawns and compensated with the salmon. My husband had the short ribs and it was melt off the bone. The wine selection was alright, but I found a delightful Reisling from Germany we enjoyed. Truly a very pleasant overall dining experience! Once again The Cask has pulled through for us. Came back again several times already but just ate last night there with a large party and the folks here were amazing about accommodating us! Though we had folks coming in late (from all over the country, flying and driving into town), they really made if work for our party and that's what truly matters! Customer service is top notch. The servers were also playful and really nice, even interacting with us and joking around with us. The food is top notch; stellar. I bring so many people here just because I haven't had a bad dish so I can safely recommend almost any of them; I had the Kobe Burgers with Foie Gras, incredibly decadent and rich and delicious! Sure they seem tiny but they will fill you up like no other, since they're so rich and juicy with fats and oils. The fries were good but not sure if they are blown out of proportion with the delicious burgers but they weren't the greatest fries I've had. I should've opted for the sweet potato fries (my cousin had them) as they were really tasty. Wine flights we had all around and their draft as well. I don't usually do Hoegaarden since it's such a generic beer now but when I order it here it's crisp and refreshing and comes in the actual Hoegaarden cup! We had some of the apps, the calamari is definitely the best, lamb sausage was good but nothing to write home about and the grilled prawns were very very tasty. Only complaint if it can be one is that this place can cost a fortune or it can be affordable to Silicon Valley startup founders. Depends how you look at it. So before I file bankruptcy I would come back one last time but I try to only come here for special occasions or I will be out on the streets reviewing the nicest street lamp that can be used as a bathroom. read more

What a welcome addition! Interesting and often wonderful wines, knowledgeable bartenders, great decor, and helpful upbeat staff. Sometimes it's hard to get a seat! The food is now OUTSTANDING but when they first opened they did not have much of a menu. They adapted quickly. Nice desserts too! Well, it's nice they are opening up all these wine bars and pubs in San Carlos, but no, it's not nice when they close at 10pm (or worse, 8-9pm on Sundays!). Closing that early means that whoever went to dinner somewhere else in town would not be able to come here to get a drink afterwards. Unless you somehow eat dinner at 6pm. I've been here for drinks and got asked out only after 30 mins, because they were closing. That was before I read their hours. The next time we visited, we didn't even come here for the drinks. We just wanted to grab some food on a Sunday night in San Carlos, and nothing was open. Seriously, I never understand this because 1) there are many people who want more than fast food, and 2) people eat late brunches on Sundays. Well, this big city girl has a hard time understanding suburbia. After some negotiations another couple had with the bartender, we ended up getting seated. The restaurant was extremely reluctant in seating us because "the kitchen is almost closing and they decided to clean up early". Oh wow, there are people who would actually pour money down the drain! In all honesty, the food was good. I would definitely come back and have one of their flatbreads again. They also have some serious sliders and burgers offering. Half of their menu look like "bar food", and yet they don't like to offer it while the bar is still open. I'd say missed opportunity -- I'd be more ok with it if they advertised this place as a restaurant, not a wine bar. Would I visit again? Perhaps, if a friend suggested it. However, we weren't treated nicely, and the service was slow. We were fast eaters (as were the other couple that got in before us), and seriously, if any of the staff had to leave late it was because they were taking forever to serve us. 15 mins just to get anyone's attention to give us the check... maybe someone is not so keen to be off work after all. read more

The last time I came, which must have been a long long time ago, because at that time Cask didn't serve food items other than appetizers. I was surprised to find that they have a full menu now! Maybe I'll come back next time to try out the rest of the menu. For our girls night we had a pinot wine flight and a taste of three cheeses. The cheese and preserves pairings were great. And we had a great time just hanging out and chatting. The look and feel of the place is warm and inviting and the noise level is pretty low. This restaurant has been on my bookmark list for some time. I finally got to try it last night and it did not disappoint. This place was really happening on a Friday night. The vibe is casual and fun. The food was fantastic! We started off with two of the International Flights. It was a good mix of big reds. For an appetizer we got the Cuban Ceviche special. It was a mix of halibut, scallops, shrimp, veggies, potato chips and it came with a flute of coconut water. There were nice large pieces of seafood and the coconut water was divine. For entrees we got the lobster risotto and scallops. The risotto dish was a side of risotto with skewers of scallops, shrimp, salmon, and some corn. I liked that it wasn't a huge bowl of risotto. It sounded really filling the way it was written, but the dish was well balanced with protein. The scallop dish was delicious. It came with three large scallops, a couple of prawns, and parsnip purée. A great balance of flavors. I guess the kitchen was running behind, but we did not notice. The chef and owner came out and personally delivered our meals to us and apologized for the delay. It was such great service, but we had not noticed a delay. The restaurant itself and staff are friendly and clean. My complaint is that there is advertised "vegan" Pattie's on the menu outside the restaurant. We were told this is the restaurants "new" menu. I took one bite of this burger and knew it wasn't vegan. (After so many years without it, you can't miss those flavors ) The server asked the chef if there was dairy and he said no. (Check the package? This is an allergy not a preference?) I continued that this was not dairy free. The server went to the kitchen and came out to verify that the package reads dairy. My body is sensitive; I have been sick in the bathroom and having stomach pain all night and morning. Please be mindful of this of ever eating there. Hoping this review can save someone else with an allergy. More so hoping the restaurant fixes this error on the menu as some peoples allergies could be life threatening as mine aren't as severe. I ordered the lamb burger and my husband ordered the San Carlos burger. We both specified medium but both were cooked to well done when received, hence the docking of two stars. We didn't have the time unfortunately to wait for new burgers to be made, so did not bother to flag to the waitstaff. I know they're a wine bar, but I wish they had wine alternatives for those who can't have wine like me. We had the calamari as an appetizer, and I had the lamb burger. The calamari was crispy and flavorful. The lamb burger was tasty, but slightly overcooked so it was chewy. The waiter didn't ask how I wanted the burger cooked, so perhaps this could've been prevented. My wife had the gnocchi, which was super yummy! The gnocchi was perfectly cooked, and the pesto cream sauce was tasty. The portions are huge, so if you aren't super hungry, I recommend sharing. The pasta dishes are enough for 2. My wife works close by and she's been here before with her colleagues for wine and cheese. She recommends the cheese platter, and says the cheese are tasty and sophisticated. The staff are friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about wines. -1 star due to my overcooked burger, and I wish they had more variety on their menu - it's rather heavy on the carbs. read more

One of the most solid of wine lists I've seen! The Cask has a really vetted list of wines and many of my staple favorites to enjoy. Their customer service was excellent and very attentive. Again another enjoyable evening with friends and the food and wine were so good! The owner came by and brought us all a nice sampling of their fried fish which was very tasty. We wanted more! This definitely help start the evening out right! We ordered several dishes, cheese plate, lobster risotto, gnocchi with short ribs, butter leaf salad, and cheese cake to end the delicious meal. All of the dishes were prepared with really good flavor combinations. The lobster was sweet and flavorful and the risotto was just right, al dente! The gnocchi which was made with goat cheese, was very good! I'm not a fan of goat cheese, so was not too sure of this dish, but have to say it turned out great! And with the short ribs, it made a great combination bursting with savory flavors. The salad added a nice fresh crispy texture to our entrees. Definitely another great place to eat! read more

I love this place! Every time I come here I never disappointed. I usually go with a glass of the most expensive red wine they have because that's how I'm ballin ! Then I will spring for the charcuterie platter which has cheeses, prosciutto, scrimps, etc. another tasty thing on the menu is the sliders which are amazing. I prefer to sit at the bar every time I go so I can try to catch a game on the telly. I would say it's the best seat in the house because you got the tv on, and you can order your drink and food with the barkeep. I am trying to think if I have had anything else to eat there, but I'm having a pretty hard time thinking today. There's one last thing I would like to mention. I don't even know if they have desserts here or not but I will say that once you get a good dinner in you and tie one on, you can step right outside and go to the right and there is a coffee shop/ice cream joint right there which has some good stuff.
