We have a Siamese kitten and had been seeing a vet on the UES. We decided to start looking for a new vet as it was getting time to do the neutering procedure. As someone who lives uptown, I checked with MANY vets uptown and on the UWS. None were as immediately responsive and attentive to my initial request for information as this office. I received a response from the doctor within a couple of hours. I decided to do an unannounced visit to see how the office ran when they weren't expecting a potential owner to stop. I was so impressed from the moment I walked in the office: it smelled great, looked immaculately clean, was immediately greeted by staff, and was even approached by the doctor as he was ending an appointment. The doctor and staff took time to show us the office and walk through the upcoming procedure. I immediately scheduled the procedure for today. We arrived at the office this morning for the procedure and were greeted at the office by name. The doctor took us into the exam room and did a full exam and then talked us through the full procedure and what to expect. Again, the doctor laid out the expected costs (which were accurate) and provided assurances that we needed to hear when leaving our kitten in his care. The doctor provided an update after the procedure alerting us to the fact that everything went well and our kitten was recovering. When we picked him up from the office, the doctor again went over everything and made us comfortable getting ready to take him home. Cat owners know that there's a certain energy that comes from cats. These aren't the unruly creatures called dogs. The facilities don't look like a traditional clinic/hospital. There's two windows into the exam room and you won't find the expected stainless steel anywhere. The exam room feels like a room in your home (as does the entire office). My partner accompanied me to the appointment today and he said "this is a cat oasis" I cannot recommend this doctor and practice enough based on our experience. This is obviously a doctor and staff that cares greatly about these patients in their care and the passion they have for their work is clear. If you have any vet needs, you need to call them right meow. That corny joke aside, they were really great and from the moment you start talking to the doctor and staff, you'll know these are professionals committed to the health of your cat. read more

Very lovely experience at the Cat Practice. Had a traumatic experience with the last vet I tried in NYC where they sedated my cat (never had that happen before) and where I felt pressured into purchasing additional services. Dr. Dougherty was very kind and talked me through everything regarding my cat's health and his dental needs. He even referred me to trustworthy dental surgeons, saying I could choose whether to have cleanings/extractions done at the Cat Practice or elsewhere. I truly felt that he was not pressuring me and I was at ease with how he and the other staff treated me and my cat. The positive reviews sound promising, but they don't resonate. I was disappointed after my most recent experience and although I had brought my cat here a few times, the last time went so poorly that I have opted to find a different vet. To put it simply, they seemed too swamped to give my cat a proper assessment and fully address her health concerns. Here is what happened: With some health issues and my concern something seemed really off, I called and made an appointment for my cat. The receptionist made note of all my concerns. Everything went fine (considering COVID conditions, dropping her off felt smooth). However when I briefly spoke with Dr. Doughtery following my cat's exam, it seemed there was a disconnect between the reasons for the appointment that I had relayed to the receptionist and what was done during my cat's exam. And although they were familiar with my cat and that she typically needs to be sedated, I felt disappointed to learn that they would only sedate pets in the morning - meaning that after stressing my cat out with the first consult when I could tell she already wasn't feeling well on top of paying for the exam and the Uber round trip, I'd have to circle back with her another day and put her through it all over again if I wanted the initial concerns I had relayed to the receptionist addressed. Obviously, I felt frustrated! But the follow up to this appointment was where they convinced me to find alternative care for my cat. I realized that some of my cat's symptoms were consistent with her getting into something poisonous. Her symptoms had been improving, but I still wanted to be sure she was ok. I called an emergency vet, however they said it didn't sound like an emergency and I was better working with the vet who had done the initial consult and had her lab work. So I called the Cat Practice to relay the new information to the vet. I wasn't expecting to the speak to the vet, I just wanted to leave a message with the new info for follow up. All I wanted from this call to the clinic was confirmation that my message would make it to the vet so the vet could assess the lab work with her history in context and get back to me with next steps for the care and wellbeing of my cat. It should have taken 5 minutes! Instead my multiple attempts to clarify my message would make it to the vet were met with indirect lines like "oh don't feel bad!" or "this kind of thing happens" or "kidney issues are common in older cats and sometimes they come out of nowhere" followed by a lot of TMI unrelated information (that they were short staffed and couldn't fill the positions (because of covid), and that they have stained glass windows in their home). This call took an hour (!!) before I was finally assured that the vet would get the info, with the lady's offering to share it when he returned home. The vet did return my call that same day in the evening, but he had not received the simple message I had tried to pass along to his office from my hour long call earlier that day. He volunteered that he would take my cat's file home and review it with the new info. He would get back to me with next steps, if not the following day then the day after. I never heard back again... and with all the time on the phone already passed with the unfortunate prospect of having to a book a redundant appointment for a full exam I'd already paid for.... well, I felt spent and that wasn't the experience I wanted to put myself or my kitty through again. One more thing, they also recommended different food for my cat given the kidney levels of her labs. But they shrugged off that her current diet is grain free for allergy reasons. The sample foods they recommended are full of grains. I wasn't given any alternatives, I was left with the impression that her only option was prescription diet food heavy on things I'd worked hard to eliminate from her diet... read more

He knows my cat Suki by name, and when I called in a last-minute appointment after I took her to the emergency vet for a seizure, he took the time to call and follow up even before seeing her. No scam artist unnecessary/surprise charges like I've experienced with some other vets. He is always willing to work within my budget while making sure Suki still gets quality treatment. The Cat Practice is as good as a vet can get. My friends and I found a stray kitten in the Hamptons a couple of weeks ago, and my friend decided to keep her. As the official cat aunt, I went with her to a vet near her apartment (in Bushwick) last week for the kittens first official checkup. The vet was 45 minutes late to see us, and then 2 days late in delivering her results. My friend got a call last Friday night telling her the kitten had tested positively for feline leukemia, and that he's sorry. In a panic (and through hysterical tears) we decided we needed a different vet who would actually talk with us and give us the information and care we need. Fast forward to today - just left from an appointment at The Cat Practice and was blown away by how caring Dr. Dougherty is. My friend couldn't make it to the vet so I took her (perks of unemployment), and he patiently answered all of my questions regarding FeLV and how to best care for the cat moving forward. He made me (and my friend, when I told her) feel so much better about having a cat with this potential diagnosis, and we feel that we will be able to handle it so much better moving forward. He didn't rush me out, and instead chatted for about 20 minutes before even remembering to take my credit card. On the way out he gave me a fresh pack of feline greenies for the trip home, which was such a nice touch. Overall, a great facility with wonderful staff who absolutely care both about their patients (the lil kitties) and the humans who love them. This is now Ripley the kittens permanent vet, and when I am lucky enough to get a cat in the future, this is where I'll go! Thanks for everything!! read more

In 2004, one of my cat was diagnosed kidney failure by Dr. Skip Sullivan. He was put on IV for a week, and didn't show the improvement so Dr. Sullivan recommended to put him down. I refused and took him home, tried holistic diet for his kidney. He recovered, he's still alive and well today. I went back years later, told Dr. Sullivan what happened. He didn't seem too excited that my cat survived. He rather sounded snnoyed that I proved him wrong even though I was very careful not to sound rude. I'm sure Dr. Sullivan did what he can and told me what he believed right thing at the time. But every pet owner need to listen to your own heart and make your own decision for the best of your beloved pet. I'm glad I did. read more

Dr. Dougherty is by far the best vet I've ever been to and the Cat Practice in general put me at ease immediately upon walking in. I'm a baby when it comes to my pets so I asked my mother to come with me. When the elevator opened its doors I said that we had the wrong place and that this was a spa. Nope, just a vet with a fake fireplace and a really open, calming atmosphere. The receptionist asked if we wanted to take our cat out but we decided to leave him in his carrier to keep him calm. So, the office cat came out, Tunes! This cat just sort of runs around the office greeting people and it's absolutely wonderful. There was already a cat in the examination room who was NOT having a good time but I knew nothing crazy was happening because you can see the whole thing from the waiting room. The exam room has a clear door as well as a little window and I was able to see what my cat was in for and immediately felt so much better. When it was my turn, my cat did his usual yowling, hissing, growling, and even snorting, but Dr. D didn't even flinch. He let the cat make noise and didn't seem to care but in a nice way, not in that weird dominant way that vets can be. When it came time to take blood and urine, a woman came out with what I can only describe as oven mitts that went up to her shoulder and a towel. She scruffed Vegas and then they put the towel over him and he didn't make a single PEEP as they literally went into his bladder and took urine. My mother is in medicine and has had many cats over the years but I couldn't reach down low enough to pick her mouth up from the floor. Obviously, this kind of service isn't cheap, but I would pay twice this amount to make both myself and my cat comfortable. I'll definitely be taking all of my cats here from now on! read more

My cat Fluffy was looking scruffy after a dust up with one of the stray cats in my neighborhood. Fluffy was cut up pretty bad and I had no idea where to turn for quality care in the Flatiron District Area. Luckily, I found Dr. Dougherty at the Cat Practice. Fluffy is certified as being afflicted with feline agoraphobia, so I am always hesitant bringing him out anywhere in public. Thankfully, Dr. Dougherty and his caring staff made my sweet Fluffy feel right at home and had him looking like a fresh little kitten in no time. As the name suggests, The Cat Practice solely specializes in cats: vet care, boarding, grooming. I took little Julio in for boarding during our vacation. While we were gone, he was let out every day for a little while to roam free in the office, petted, snuggled and fed twice a day. He also got his claws trimmed. When I picked him up, he was calm and happy, snuggling up to one of the employees. When I signed him out, they gave me a complete "progress report" with results of his physical and how he behaved while we were away. The staff was very nice and knowledgeable. Although this establishment charges a little more than your average place for boarding ($20 a day), it is worth the extra money knowing your kitty cat is in good hands. read more

The biggest compliment for Dr. Dougherty is that he's not at all like a stuffy New York City doctor. From the way he knows your cat by name and his attentive demeanor and friendly and hilarious manner you would think he's your down-the-street neighborhood vet! You never feel like one of the masses at The Cat Practice. Dr. Dougherty is truly a godsend. In the four years or so my cat has been going there my cat frequently has encountered one minor issue or another and even on little notice Dr. D makes time to see my lil guy and is always patient and knowledgeable and thorough I always leave with both my cat feeling better and me feeling so relieved! Of course someone that chooses to only care for cats would genuinely like cats but it is always so comforting the care and sincere love he gives both my cat and the cats in the waiting room. As my cat gets older its so nice to have the peace of mind to have a vet in our lives that knows my cat's history and his quirks. And of course, the ability to board your cat with your trusted veterinarian? You can't even put a price on it. I really feel so lucky to have Dr. D as our vet. read more

Back in March during the stay-at-home order in NYC, Simba and I had to make an emergency visit to see Dr. Dougherty who diagnosed him with Stage 1 kidney disease. Not only was he informative and caring about Simba's diagnosis, he promptly submitted a prescription to Chewy.com for the veterinary cat food Simba needed. When it was time to euthanize my cat of 16+ years, not only was he caring and compassionate, he also demonstrated his commitment and love of cats with the personal and detailed attention he provided to my cat. My interactions with him for general visits have been great. He's always been attentive, answered questions and just a nice guy. Last week, my cat was in health crisis and Cat Practice was amazing. From their pragmatic approach to treating my aging cat, to the love and attention they gave to him, I can't say enough good things. Dr D also was supportive of my needs to keep the bill reasonable, but give him the best care possible. When it was time to take the big tubby cat home, they were all sad to see him go. These guys are as good as it gets. I brought my Venus to The Cat Practice after having been told by another vet that there was nothing wrong with her and that her unusual behavior was not derived from a medical problem. Dr. Sullivan asked lots of questions and took the time to understand my cat, getting to the medical root of Venus' bad behavior without all the expensive tests that the previous vet required (in the end, to no avail). He seemed incredibly knowledgeable and took the time to share that knowledge with me and answer all my questions. The staff are also amazing. After getting a diagnosis that required medication, I was nervous about how to administer pills and liquid antibiotics. One of the assistants gave me a demonstration and let me practice until i felt comfortable with the process. And his tips really worked! I'd happily recommend this place to anybody whose cat needs a little extra attention. It's worth every penny. read more

Love Cat Practice! We came here about a month ago for our adopted kitten's first vet visit and I'm so happy to have found a place I trust whole heartedly to take care of our little one! Dr D. and the nurses were very attentive and careful. Everyone I encountered genuinely love cats and care about them. Siggy (my kitten) was handled with so much love and was so comfortable in their hands that she barely flinched when she got her shot and blood draw! I also really appreciate that it's a small clinic so it feels a lot more personal (and of course, not as stressful for the cats!) Ok so we're still early into our experience with the Cat Practice as we just took our little train wreck there earlier today but first signs are super positive. You might consider opting out of some of the more thorough efforts of the doctor. She's doing the right thing but this place is appropriately expensive (high quality and in NYC) but you can rack up a serious bill super fast so you might consider if you really need blood work done. This IS NOT an attempt to over-charge you, that's really not their schtick but just something to think about. The whole vibe of the place is absolutely fantastic and they take in abandoned cats and support them without help from others - I really can't overemphasize how cool they are. Very professional and helpful staff and you'll practically want to spend the whole day there hanging out with all the fun cats who seem to pretty much run the place. And even with that, its super clean and overall just great from top to bottom. I guess that's why I went with the 5 stars. We're believers. read more

Dr Dougherty and team is very nice with you once you come and willing to spend the money.However,they show their real attitude once the things does not go well.We spent 650 usd there and the symptoms only got worse. My cat was vominting but did not have anydiarrhea,however,after the treatment (Cerenia ONLY for DOGS) he gave him (9 h later) the diarrehea started immediately.He told that the drug absolutely cannot cause it,however,that is one of side affect in the instruction.He refused to change the drug or give smt to stop diarrea.He did an Xray for 250 usd and could not identify the small round object whether was fur or any object...useless and disappointing.He insisted it was a foreign object inside (although he could not see it) but the other doctor just change the drug and the cat got better... read more

The prescription did exactly what he thought it would, and now, the cat is as happy and healthy as can be. One of my Siamese cats was born with F.I.V. The symptoms often do not show until the cat is around 10 months old. This was the case with my young Siamese when I brought him here for a recurring eye infection. I can't recall the name of the specialist; she was a young French Canadian who was only here a few days a week (and still had a practice going in Quebec). Took the young cat to her on two occasions. Result: very outrageous fees for what little she did. The cat did not benefit. Perhaps the French-Canadian specialist is no longer there but it was a total turn-off. However, I also checked out the room where they board cats and I was seriously UNDERwhelmed by both the hygiene and staff I observed. NOTE: It is useful to have a vet who only has CATS in the waiting room. During vet visits at other places, my cats have been frightened by huge barking dogs and out-of-control Dobermans. That said, I do hope this place improves. I will check YELP reviews -- -- and maybe one day I'll come back here. read more

This is a great alternative to boarding your cat at a veterinarians office where they keep the animals locked away the entire time or leaving your pet at home. I'm sure some cats would be fine with that, but I don't have a normal cat. She likes to play and is very social. It's a little more pricey but not unaffordable. They charge $25 a day. The only thing that can get expensive are the medical requirements such as exams and shots. I would rather have my pet medically up-to-date though and surrounded by animals who are healthy as well. I brought my cat here for a four day stay. I was a little paranoid about leaving her alone at first, but they were very friendly and welcoming. When I picked her up after the stay she seemed fine and they gave me a little description of her stay. They also charged me for one less day since I picked her up early. The only thing I was unsure about was when they said she didn't want to come out of her cage. She is VERY outgoing and curious, and I find it hard to believe that she wouldn't want to explore. I guess I will never know what goes on when I'm not around. I would bring her back here, but only if there was no alternative. read more

Dr. D is a gem ! I Both my husband and I as well as our two cats love him ! I love his demeanor, I love how down to earth he is amongst pretentious over-the-top NYC doctors and I love hard he will try to accommodate you if you have an emergency. He also sees patients on the weekends which makes it east for working professionals. He's treated both of my cats over the last two years - my one cat is chronically sick with herpes so we saw him almost every month the first few months of acquiring a kitten and I have nothing but great things to say about him ! He is sooo good with my cats, one time I brought my older cat along with me for the kitten appointment because the kitten was stressed out. During vaccinnations of the baby, the older cat became distressed by the kitten meowing, bit me, jumped out of my arms, ran up to Dr. D, ferrociously attacked him, bit him and scratched him all over trying to protect the baby kitten " from being hurt" while he was meowing. And even though Dr. D could have been really pissed because she scratched him up and bit him, he took it easy and just kindly asked not to bring her over again to the kitten appointments. He also houses abandoned cats and provides medical care to them, he has this one kitty living in the office who is nothing short of the miracle, a kind fluffy harmless giant named Larry who has congestive heart failure. The care and love that Dr. D provides to these cats speaks volumes about his character ! I moved away from the neighborhood but will continue coming back to see this vet because I think he is probably the nicest cat vet in the city :) It's also a small family business started by Dr. D and his wife, so if you are all about supporting small local business, he is a way to go ! read more

Dr Sullivan and his staff are great! Hes taken 'do one thing and do it right' to new heights; Cats! Dr Sullivan knows cats. He's very experienced, provides great care, doesn't up-sell tests or services, and the prices are reasonable. They also do boarding at reasonable rates and let the cats play and walk around, not just locking them up like inmates like some kennels do. The only negative, if there is one, is hes a general practitioner. If you need emergency service or specialists you'll have to go elsewhere. But that's not such a burden in a city full of specialists. read more

I love this place. My cat loves this place. I have never been turned down for boarding, which runs around $25 per day for non-medical. Moreover, they know my cat by name and more often than not, he is hanging out outside of his cage when I arrive to pick him up. Brought her in and turns out that she has pancreatitis. after a couple days in the hospital the doctor found out that she also has chronic heart failure. he most definitely saved her life because if was undetected for a long period of time can't say enough . but if you have a feline definitely bring your precious baby to The Cat Practice. read more

I have been bringing my cats to The Cat Practice for over 31 years. In fact, I recently discovered that my first visit came within about 6 months of their opening. I originally found them in the Yellow Pages (really). I was living in the South Street Seaport area at the time (before the Seaport), and there was nothing downtown at all. So, I had to find one that was within a reasonable commute; they were about the closest. The deal-maker was that they treated only cats. Dr. Skip (as William Sullivan, DVM is known to most) is, without a doubt, the best vet I have ever seen -- and I have a fair amount of experience, having been responsible for roughly 15 cats and 4 dogs over the years (no, not at the same time [lol]). He is experienced, knowledgeable, and very much cat- and human-friendly. I am sure it is at least partly due to The Cat Practice that all of my cats have lived to be at least 15 years old. Their care for my cats has ranged from regular checkups to emergencies to managing difficult, ongoing illnesses. They have saved more than one cat from unnecessary surgery (recommended by a different vet), and others from conditions that other vets told me were untreatable. No, they're not miracle workers, but they are very, very good at what they do. I currently have an adult female (almost 5) and a kitten female (about 14 weeks). They have both been seen and treated by Dr. Skip and staff, and while I wouldn't say they love going to the vet, they tolerate it a lot better than other cats have with other vets. Everyone is very attentive to them and to me, and provide the little touches (knowing my name and the cats' names, giving the cats a little catnip on the way out, etc.) that turn a good experience into an outstanding one. If Dr. Skip were not available for any reason, I would find it exceedingly hard -- if not impossible -- to replace his services and honest caring. We came to the Cat Practice after a very frustrating and disappointing experience at our local vet (Paws and Claws in Williamsburg) who failed to diagnose a very dangerous auto-immune condition in our cat that the Cat Practice diagnosed and treated immediately. Our lovely tabby is a changed cat: we thought she was just lazy, turns out she was in pain. We've been going for over 2 years, at least twice a year and are always treated with courtesy. I appreciate their relationship with C.O Bigelow where they formulate cat-flavored liquid medication. I really love Yolanda, the receptionist, who knows me and my cats and is such a pleasure to deal with. Not only do they have lots of lovely kitties being boaded, they also have some permanent residents (hi Miss Kitty!) My one complaint and why I take off is a star is that we've seen Dr. Sullivan only once while the other vet who sees the majority of appointments is always changing. It makes me worried that there is something going on here that I'm not aware of. It's always a young woman recently out of school and I'm not sure why they keep leaving. My neighbor also has had some negative experiences there, so I'm starting to get cautious in my enthusiasm. read more
