My brother and I went to The Cellar for lunch and had a fastastic time! We ordered a few flights between the two of us (hey, he was on vacation!) and the International Bubbles was my favorite...the sparkling shiraz was fantastic. We also ordered the cheese plate and the charcuterie. All of it was awesome. The cheese was interesting and varied (even the hard cheese was delicious) and each was pared with a 'condiment' such as a homemade red pepper jelly, red wine soaked shallots, or local honey. The charcuterie was fantastic and had some interesting items such as duck breast and a super dry salami. We also chatted with the guy working that day and he assured us that the cheese change often so you'll never get bored....oh to be bored by cheese, i wish :) Last, and certainly not last, we ordered the chocolate flight and it was HEAVEN. It was an assortment of CHUAO chocolates and they were some of the best chocolates that I've ever had. I was highly recommended to go to this restaurant by a good friend of mine who is a local. I definitely know why! Most Excellent and friendly service by Christian and Travis!! I met my sisters and nieces there for a birthday celebration for one of my sisters. We were greeted immediately with such a warm welcome and served right away with delicious coffee! We shared a few recommended entrees so we could taste a lil bit of everything....French toast, chilaquiles, avocado + the works all so savory! This was our first time at the celler, we came for brunch. To be honest i believe their brunch menu is moderately bland and underwhelming for the price. Their coffee was strong and full of flavor, while our fritatta was not full of veggies and feta as advertised, due to that it was not a successful dish. We also made the mistake of ordering chicken and waffles which were over cooking and drenched in maple syrup. (Meat didn't taste fresh). A nice little brunch spot in downtown San Clemente with more than just the classic mimosa offering for the lady looking for her weekend bubbles! The Strauss yogurt with granola and fresh mixed berries was exactly what I wanted. It comes with honey on top but I asked for it on the side. I am glad I did because the dish did not need any honey. I enjoyed the classic mimosa which was perfection. Not too much OJ - higher concentration of the champs! This is our second time here, we always come in early, today at 2:45, it's quite and we were the only ones at the bar. They have Chimay on tap which is a favorite for me! They have a good wine list. Not as good as it used to be.... they are getting too big. The food and menu used to be better. I don't drink alcohol so I'm just reviewing from that perspective. I do always order Diet Coke with lime at restaurants and last night i tried to but the waitress said they only have Mexican Coke and sprite. No Diet Coke. I know they used it so i was really confused. She said they only have drinks in glass bottles. I feel like you should have more options for ppl who don't drink? I love The Cellar... it's such a hot little casual, yet you feel fancy, kinda spot to relax and enjoy some great wine and cheese. We came here right towards the end of HH and ordered a Margherita pizzetta ($3 or $5, can't remember) and the small cheese plate ($9). The wine flights range from $15 and up.I had a summer flight which included the popular Hogwash Rosé. We wound up ordering a bottle of that and it is now my favorite rosé! For an entree, the slow braised short ribs melt in your mouth and the kale and smashed potatoes that accompany it are excellent sides that accompanied it well. The portion was large enough for me and my girlfriend to share, since the pizza and cheese plate filled us up nicely. For dessert, the brioche bread budding brulee was to-die-for. So for two appetizers (at HH prices), two wine flights (about $20 each), a bottle ($35), and one entree brought our total to $160 with tax and tip. I wish this place were closer because I would come here more regularly. Service was great, we never went without and our server came around often to check up on us. The lovely ambiance, cool locals that sat across from us at the communal table with great conversation (don't worry, they have regular non-communal tables, too) and the not too shabby at all, piano player/singer kept us around for about 4 hours! When I lived in St. Louis, me and the guy used to go to a place called Bailey's Chocolate Bar. It was a unique establishment that focused on three awesome things: good spirits, good cheese, and good dessert. While I haven't pined for much since I moved to California from Missouri, I did pine a bit for Bailey's, because it was wondrously special. A good place to fall in love. The Cellar fixes all that. Here you have the trifecta of yum: good cheese, good spirits, and good dessert. Their focus is on wine, but don't dismiss their beer list -- I had a crisp hard cider the night we went, and my husband had a smooth and tasty red wine flight. The cheese and charcuterie plate was delicious, with a trio of cheeses anointed with various flavorful components (honey, young walnuts, pickled peppers). The cheeses ranged from hard and buttery to soft and stinky, a pleasant cornucopia to keep my tongue happy. The lemon caesar salad was glossy with just enough flavorful dressing, parmesan crisps, and huge shavings of parmesan. Our short ribs were tender and flavorful, and the polenta it was served on was fluffy and creamy all at once. But the star of the meal was the butterscotch pudding ("the Salty Cellar") with salted caramel and creme fraiche. The pudding was a bit soupy, but divine, and a perfect end to our meal. Bonus points: the coffee came in a Bodum press. Excellent. As if this place couldn't be better, it has a little gift shop at the entrance where you can buy chocolate, cheese, wine, and what have you. It's like Cracker Barrel for food snobs. There is one con to all these pros -- the live music can be a bit loud, and the acoustics and general casual atmosphere guarantee this place is noisy. It's not a good place to have in-depth geopolitical debates. It is a good place to unwind and eat great food. Love it, and would happily recommend it for anyone who wants a tasty, slightly expensive, gourmet meal without putting up with a pretentious setting. read more

As soon as I walked in, I knew this was my kind of place. There is a coffee bar in the front that makes a delicious iced latte (didn't need any sweetener or flavor). My friend and I met for lunch and at the waitresses' suggestion, we both got the turkey sandwich, which came on ciabatta and had apple, avocado, caramelized onion, aioli and brie cheese. Well, we read the reviews for the Cellar and they were stellar, so we drove into town looking for a great brunch with guests and that's where great ended. Everyone is very friendly and the vibe was pleasant, and the decor also is inviting, so the matrix is there but the execution was flat, like the champagne drinks we ordered. Flat, cheap champagne with sugar syrup added and not cold enough as well. The egg skillet was almost all finger potatoes with just a hint of eggs and devoid of flavor. We had to plaster it with hot sauce to find some savor. And it goes on and on. So I hope it was just a bad Sunday but we will be looking elsewhere for good eats. read more
