Found this place on help. Not sure what the hate is, but I found this place to be pretty damn good. Especially for the prices. It had and old school feel. Dinners included soup or salad and some toast. My ribeye was great nice and tender. Fried pickles were also very good. Turkey nuts (that right testicles) were interesting, fried but the flavor was interesting. Hard to describe but worth trying for sure. Such Great service!! I looked up a local for a nice steak after a grueling 12hr day in the sun to treat myself to a steak n beer. I noticed they serve Harris Ranch Steaks and didn't think twice. I walked in, still in my work clothes somewhat disheveled lookin yet was treated with such attentive hospitality. Great selection of cold bottled beers WITH A FROSTY GLASS MUG!! So a good friend of mine who lives across the country likes to send food for special occasions. In honor of Thanksgiving she was looking for a place that was open and using DoorDash delivery. DoorDash did state that the Cellar was open on Thanksgiving and since this was a surprise I didn't know ahead of time to look and see if they were. It ended up that DoorDash was not delivering from the Cellar on Thanksgiving so the order was canceled and my friend re-ordered for the next evening. Despite the issues with DoorDash showing delivery available on that day when the food was delivered it was very good. Porterhouse was cooked to my requested medium rare and they did a good job there so that's always a plus I hate an overcooked steak! This time fries were chosen instead of the baked potato and they were good and plentiful. The bread was OK it was an end piece or possibly a hamburger bun. Instead of salad to change things up soup was ordered. No description on the menu regarding what type of soup was available and it ended up being clam chowder. At first I thought it was a cream of potato soup but after eating a bit more I did realize it was clam chowder. Also in my photo there is a salad shown that is not part of this dinner. Steak was gigantic and barely fit on the plate. All in all it was a very satisfying meal although I do think I enjoy the baked potato more and to have some salad instead of the soup just because I like my greens. I have ordered from the Cellar or have had items ordered for me there several times since they started delivering on DoorDash the only thing I do wish is that they would have more of their items available for delivery. Their DoorDash menu is smaller than their menu at the restaurant so it's a little limited sometimes. Again very good steak and cooked the way I like so that's a huge plus for me and I would recommend giving it a try. They've been around forever and I'm happy to be able to order from them with delivery. Prices are reasonable as well which is a huge plus especially now when everything is so expensive. I was so excited to go here for dinner. Raved about their steak and potatoes. OMG I was so embarrassed that we went here. Not only was service terrible with little people to serve but the waitresses were passing a toddler back and forth putting their fingers through his hair then serving us food without washing their hands but the guest next to us started feeding the toddler ordering him fries then shouting over our table that the fries were cold and to have them redone. The waitress said they must have sat in the window for a long time and he took them to the chef himself yelling to have them redone. We thought everyone must have been family there and didn't know how to treat paying customers. Oh and my medium rare steak was burnt too. Stopped in on a Thursday night with family and service was amazing ! Owner was quick to have drinks served ! I ordered the 10 oz New York and my family all had 16oz rib eyes no complaints! We really wanted to love this place....Came here on a Friday at 5p for our first "post-vaccine" dinner and we were shocked at how hot it was inside. Like super hot. We asked if the air conditioner was broken and the server just walked away....it was cooler outside! We asked them to turn on one of the two super dusty fans above the bar and we were told they didn't work. We were also surprised at how small the menu is: no pasta dishes at all. We ordered fried mushrooms, a kid's pepperoni pizza, two filet mignons , with blue cheese salads. They were out of mushrooms so we don't know if they are good. The salad itself was one of those bagged iceberg lettuce with carrots that you can get anywhere. The blue cheese dressing is incredible, though: creamy and blue-cheesy with blue cheese crumbles on top. They brought us jalapeño poppers in place of the mushrooms and they were exactly like the ones you can get at Jack in the Box. The fries were unseasoned and greasy. The filets were not filet cut. Not sure what they cut they were but they were extremely over-cooked. We ordered medium rare and you can see by the pictures that they were well-done and they had a bad smell. We apologized to our server, left her a $20 tip and left. We ended up going to Fugazzis instead as we were starving. Service was hit or miss--mostly miss. They weren't too busy--five tables other than us with three servers on the floor and we saw three cooks behind the line. We had to ask for drink refills. The house Chardonnay (which is all they offer by the glass) was meh. It was ice cold, though, which was nice. read more

Worst place ever , just moved to poterville and was on our first date night here , figured nice steak house dinner. WRONG waitress is slow our appetizers , salad and food all came out at the same time. As we were eating I asked my husband what the horrible smell was , he has no sense of smell , he just ate after a while I could not stand the smell . Turns out his steak was rotten with maggots in it. We called over the owner she apologized and said she will comp our meal . As my husband is extremely southern he went to her and offered to still pay for our meal or atleast for his beer and our sons pizza. I had to get out of there but not before I took a picture just in case my husband got sick. We reviewed the place on Google and owner responded making excuses not knowing I took a picture . I have been so excited to visit this restaurant because the Yelp reviews were so good. The pictures looked good to. Well the pictures were not deceiving the food was really good. At least I thought so. I ordered the steak and shrimp. Hubby ordered the Filet Mignon and did not think it had any taste at all. Staff was very nice, however, unprofessional I felt. We had a party of 11 and were seated right in front of the kitchen where Chad was making all the steaks. The waitresses would wonder back and fourth and pick up their orders. Our appetizers were forgotten and I heard our waitress tell Chad "Did you not hear me, I need my chicken wings and mozzarella sticks." The waitress was fiddling with her hair while waiting for food and did not wash her hands before handling the food. I saw our chicken wings get tossed out on the counter, one flew out onto the counter and the waitress picked it up and placed it back on the plate... The restaurant just looked so dirty the bathroom was quite gross. I just felt yucky sitting there. I would pay more for a steak at a cleaner restaurant. read more

He enjoyed the meal, but his taste buds are pretty easy to please (he lived off McDonald's before I came around). I would be content never returning to this place. Here's why... Yes, the food is cheap... because the quality and service is far below average. I am baffled by the stellar reviews this place has. We both ordered a ribeye steak with baked potato, salad and garlic bread. The steak was cooked as we ordered, rare. The steak itself was very grisly and rather thin for my taste. Hubby ate all of his, I ate half of mine and the rest went to his lunch for work. The baked potato was served with sour cream and CANNED cheese. 'Nuff said. The garlic bread was cold and gritty. Gross. They didn't even try. The salad was nothing special, but that's to be expected. I dressed mine with (tasteless) olive oil and red vinegar. The A1 Steak sauce was watered down for sure (see picture). Service is my hubby's pet peeve as he used to be a waiter.... He was very unsatisfied. The place was nearly empty and it took forever to get help. The waitress seemed stressed over what little people she had to help. Oh! We also saw another waitress walk across the dining room floor with a full trash bag. That should never be seen by customers. She didnt wash her hands before returning to work. We drove in from the OC for a family event in Bakersfield and said we have to go again. First time probably 25yrs ago and tonight when we got there .....they closed early. One of the waitresses was kind enough to tell us why they closed and that they were sorry. In conversation with her and knowing how far we traveled The Cellars Ms Savannah and the staff opened up for just us 2. Welcomed us in and didn't rush us as all the staff was there waiting for us to leave...lol! But nope they all engaged in talk and we had a memorable evening at The Cellar in Porterville. Just recently went back to see how they are doing, and some things have changed.... The steak was very good this time, however it's always a hit or miss with the food as I mentioned previously. The service was great and the waitress was fine, but there are other things that MUST be improved. For example, the prices are still wayyyy higher than they should be. A special steak (around 6-7oz) was $14. Besides prices, the conditions of the place are dirty, despite having them remodel around a year ago now. The floor had food droppings, crumbs, and some trash, etc. The tables were a little sticky, and the once freshly painted walls are now chipped. PSA: I heard they are getting a new manager, so hopefully we can expect some good changes. read more

Staff friendly for sure but horribly unorganized, took forever to get drinks and to get our order in. Poor lady cooking looked overwhelmed with the four tables including our group of four, if were busy we would have never eaten. Food looked good, nice presentation. Unfortunately however the steaks were extremely overcooked and so salty as was everything including the bread. Shrimp was so overcooked the meat was mostly gone just the shell and tail left. The Cellar, still going strong in Porterville for 37 years. Many of the ol' town standbys have closed while you have stayed open. The fact it's been going since the mid-70's shows, not only in it's decor but it's menu. However, it's food, service and prices are very good, and is my go-to sit down restaurant in Porterville. The decor still looks of the mid-70's as does the menu, but the quality is very good. Ribeye Steak for $9.95, Quart of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale $4; what else needs to be said. Steaks are seasoned well and cooked to your preference. The Baked Potato you get with Sour Cream, Butter and the almighty Cheez-wiz hits that midweek at home meal spot. My last trip was on a Wednesday night for the $12.95 pound slab of Prime Rib. Most of the local mom and pop restaurants of Porterville have closed, and this is one of the few decent sit downs in Porterville. Beyond fair prices in 2013, most steaks will run you under $12 except the Filet. Full bar and bargain beer prices, a good place to sit down and unwind. read more

I wanted to share this special place with my husband and kids, we drove 30 minutes on two different occasions and needless to say both times were unpleasant experiences. Both times we walked in the servers were not the friendliest and had a look of disgust on their faces the whole time.Not to mention it took approximately fifteen minutes to even get a drink and when we got them my husbands beer was hot. We thought it was an honest mistake however when we got our steaks my husbands was medium rare and he ordered well done, mine was chewy with no flavor... And, this Restaraunt dissapointed big time. The waitress took our orders & the food was great, but the service terrible. If you could give a negative rating for a restaraunt, this would be it. The waitress after taking our orders & bringing our food, never ever once came back around to our table to ask if we needed anything, never asked, if wanted refills, never came to bring us bread, just brought us our salad, and dinner. At the end, we just wanted to leave, and since it wasn't busy anymore, never did the waitress bother to come by our table to see if needed anythinng, yes she did attend others, but it just wasn't busy. My brother had to get up after waiting half hour to pay the bill. Yes, the service is really that bad here, and it left a lasting bad impression, but the food was great. So, if we ever go back, we will take our dinner to go, but i reccomend not eating there during dinner time, for the service is terrible, and more than likely, won't ever eat there ever again. Definitely had the worst experience here not with the food we had ordered but with the drinks I ordered a Dr Pepper, I put my straw all the way to the bottom of the cup to get the last bit of soda that was in there when I took a drink it tasted so nasty I dumped all the ice out into another cup and low and behold there was old molded soda syrup in the bottom !!!! Immediately I felt very sick and ran outside ready to puke!!! I took my Brother-in-Law and his wife to lunch at the Cellar on his recommendation, he is a regular. I had one simple request, where can I get a good steak in Porterville. The Cellar is pretty much it! Not the highest praise, so I had my guard up, especially after reading some reviews, which seem to be hit-or-miss. The Cellar is a decent steak house, it is not Morton's or Ruth's Chris. I availed myself of the 16 oz. Ribeye with a loaded baked potato and side salad. The salad was pretty much lettuce with dressing, but I am uncomplicated man, and was there for steak. The loaded baked potato went off half-cocked with butter, sour cream and cheese sauce (blanked on the bacon bits). The cheese sauce is like nacho cheese and was better than I expected, but no bacon bits was a problem for me. They are very lucky I was there for steak and not a potato bar. My understanding, after talking to my Brother-in-Law is that there are two main seating areas and one is literally a cellar, so this may be the source of dirty/dingy lingo in other reviews. I ate upstairs, which looks a bit like a country kitchen with a full bar. I liked the atmosphere. The help was attentive, and they had Pepsi products and crushed ice (woo hoo!), which is still no substitute for bacon bits. Bonus, all three of us were able to eat Steak for $40, which is about what I expect steak for 2 to cost. The steak was tasty, so was the baked potato (sans bacon bits) and I was hungry enough to eat the salad, with Crackers, not Croutons, another disappointment.
