The best thing about this place is the "family restaurant" feel circa the Nixon-era. Food is cheap and easy, coming straight outta massive tins and jars, buckets and plastic bags. If you've eaten in any crappy roadside diner in the past 50 years, you've eaten here. Chicken fried steak was good, but smothered in condensed turkey (TURKEY!?) "gravy" that I instantly recognized from my days slinging hash at Perkins 20 years ago. It comes out of a little plastic tub and you just add hot water. Funny they should call it "pan drippings" or some such on the menu. I'm not sure they even have pans here. Corn went straight from a can to the microwave to my plate. "Butter" is actually "Whipped Margarine Blend" or worse. Everything appears to have been cooked in a pastel-neon-yellowish blend of some kind courtesy of the engineers at Monsanto. Service is good and very friendly. Atmosphere is geriatric, which is to say it has a well-worn dinginess with just a touch of real death fringing the margins. Exactly how many overly enthusiastic octo-genarians have wound up face-down in their Stoffeurs Instant Stuffing? The crystal ball is hazy, but they certainly died happy; tummies full of the same stuff they ate while stationed on the Battleship Missouri in Inchon harbor all those sweet and slippery years ago! Really. It's just bad food. Stop trying to justify it people! They may be good for breakfast, but the bar here must be terribly low, and I suspect the lion's share of praise comes from the warm feeling hipsters get by eating garbage produced by fetishized minority cultures. In this case the Greatest Generation, people who remember the Beatles as those annoying upstart druggies with inexplicable haircuts. They had their time. We have since learned the joy of fresh ingredients and "cooking" as opposed to reheating the cheapest junk Sysco has to offer. OK ok. But why a robust three stars? The owners were very friendly and the service was great so that's where you get the three stars. The food however was average. My wife had the eggs Benedict and the hollandaise sauce was broken and too thick. I had the biscuits and gravy and while it was made from scratch it certainly left a lot to be desired. Spill boiling hot water on my lap. Food was bland, would of been 2 or 3 starts if without the "event". A nice waitress spilt boiling hot water on my lap, she seemed traumatized and apologized sincerely. Even though I ended up blistering quite bad, I'm not upset with her because she seem sincerely sorry. The reason for the one star rating: while leaving, another blonde white waitress aggressively questioned me saying "so you spilt the water on yourself while reaching for it" right after the other waitress told her what really happened. She was trying to intimidate me into admitting fault. There was a viscous tone in her words. Basically, imagine having a waitress spill boiling hot water on you and unstable person yell and try to blame it on you. I calmly replied to her questions and got away from that weirdo. Goodness does my child LOVE the chalet. When we pass the chalet on the way home, I frequently get asked to go there. I'm told their food is better than the food I was going to cook for dinner And perhaps my child has a point.: Their breakfasts are traditional and reasonably sized for what you pay for. You see I do dine at some of the finest places in the world but Dick also appreciates down to earth neighborhood restaurants; such as the case with the Chalet. Yes, it is not Café De Paris, but nor does it tries to be. Instead you have a friendly neighborhood restaurant which does not cook pretentious food. Okay this is the place forgotten in time. Sadly the food is also. Most items on the menu are frozen and not made from scratch. Those that are made from scratch are McDonald's bad. Now throw in canned vegetables, canned fruit and a hamburger bun for bread and you get the idea. The wait staff is young and very friendly. They made this mistake bearable. I would guess the avg age of the customers to be about 75 with no taste buds left. Went here for breakfast Sunday morning. The place was packed. Waitresses were very attentive to refills on coffee and water. The wait crew was friendly and busy, it looked like a well-organized crew. This is a very nice family restaurant as evidenced by the numerous families with small children while I was there. This surprised me since I read a review saying it was mostly retirees. The service was outstanding (Martha) and very friendly. I was disappointed by the Spanish omelette. It was very thin with nothing on the inside. The sauce on top was rather sweet, had no semblance of hotness, even mild. The person I was with had fried eggs with her meal and said they were excellent, as was the rest of both of our meals. If you read the rest of my reviews you'll see I rate rather high, not liking to complain, so this is uncharacteristic of me. My recommendations would be either to remove the Spanish omelette from the menu, or buy a much higher quality of salsa, and put it on the inside before folding the omelette. read more

LUNCH So my family and I ate at the Chalet for lunch and judging from the amount of people that were dining, to seeing the breakfast plates, I was thinking this would be a good place for food. We ordered chicken nuggets for the kids, burger and fries (with salad) and the fish and chips. The nuggets sadly were like rubbery bread with no chicken to be found (way over cooked as well), the salad looked aged and very dry, the fish was so over cooked that it was hard to chew, rubbery, flavorless, and was sad to see the fish was cooked improperly. The burger was okay but no sauces or flavor, and the veggies on it were quite aged and looked like they had been sitting out for a couple days in the fridge. The price was not much different from other places we had been with much hire quality food. ***The staff was very KIND and one server even brought me a wetted napkin to wipe my little guys face (didn't know she spotted me trying to Clean up my kids) which was pretty thoughtful! :) This one star is just for the lunch food that we tried. Don't go here for breakfast. I was shocked by the quality of the food given the reviews. The corned beef and hash I'm pretty sure was out of a can. It looked like cat food, it really grossed me and my husband out. The hashbrowns were ok, given they were likely frozen.
