This is my first Yelp review, due to the fact that there were some absolutely horrible guests in front of us who were whining about the dress policy and caused quite the scene this evening, which ended with a loud threat to the chef/owner to give a bad Yelp review. (Yes, really! It was like watching a scene out of a poorly-done reality TV show.) The chef may be a smug fellow, but he knows what he's doing and I appreciate his standards to make the atmosphere of his place unique. We ordered the cheese platter, Lemon-Pecorino Romaine salad, Filet Mignon, and Raspberry-Pistachio Tart. Everything was delicious. The cheese plate was creative. I enjoyed trying new flavor combinations with apricot preserves, honey, various cheeses, green grapes (I would prefer red), dates, and crostini. The flavors were expertly balanced on the salad; I could taste every ingredient in such a way that nothing was too much or too overpowering: the lemon, olive oil, fresh basil, and even the olive oil each had their moment to shine. I have never tasted a better Filet Mignon- the sear, texture, flavor, and quality of the cut was sheer perfection. Even the tart was well-balanced with a not-too-sweet layer of cream and a light dusting of powdered sugar that once agian highlighted the natural flavors of the raspberries and pistachios. read more

Searching for a place to take my wife for her birthday, I happened upon this restaurant on Yelp. I chose it above some others because the decor looked so elegant and creative. It is located in a part of Draper which I have never been to before - kind of an old town, I suppose. As we walked up to the restaurant I knew we had made the right choice--the atmosphere they have created is so special. It continued inside with an elegant and intimate mood. There is clearly a fine artist behind this; it gave me high hopes about the food. Our server was a class act. We shared the lobster bisque, which my wife said several times was the best she had ever had (I agree). I had the salmon, which was wonderful. My wife had the beef bourguignon, which she loved. For dessert, we shared the croissant bread pudding - amazing! We are going back this morning for Sunday brunch. We can't wait! read more

Our third time here and it was very disappointing. We were a group of eight and right from the start the service was terrible. The waitress was scattered and spoke so softly we couldn't hear or understand what she was saying. She left the table three times to attend to who know what and still was unable to describe the specials when she returned each time. Granted, the place was very busy, but it shouldn't take over 45 minutes to get the dinners out once we were finally able to order. Our server just flat disappeared and never checked back. The dinners were brought out by some young men who were very confused as to who ordered what. One of our friends was served with a filet that was ordered medium rare and was so overdone it was desiccated and had to be sent back. Never a good thing! Update: It appears the owner and the owner's friend is now trolling me. Way to keep it classy. Wouldn't recommend this place 1000% 1- The beverage director, masquerading as a somm, had no recommendations fo aperitifs or wine. 2- one person at our table received her mean a full 10 min before the other three of us 3- I was served room temperature rosé, which the 'somm' didn't know anything about, because he'd never tried it. 4- we were charged a 22% mandatory gratuity for a party of 6, even though there were only 4 at our table 5- the owner 'Chef Marco' called me the next day to say that I made his waiter Alex O cry 6- the owner then accused me of being cheap for not buying one of their better wines that weren't offered to me or my group 7- the owner continued to make demands of me, instead of privately addressing his personnel problems. Neither I, nor any of my party will ever go back. We were satisfied to simply walk away from the experience, but the owner's overprivileged and psychotic behavior following this experience necessitates this review. The location is gorgeous. We sat outside and cuddled with blankets provided by The Charleston. They have string lights hung up and on a summer night it is just absolutely romantic. I think sometimes you pay somewhat for the experience. I had a really nice time. I ordered the lobster mac and cheese because I'm a cheese freak. It was pretty dang good. The flavor was on point, I just wish I had more of it. We also had the bread pudding, raspberry pistachio tart, and chocolate cake. I'm not a "foodie" or food snob by any stretch of the imagination but The Charleston definitely felt like it was lacking in a few areas for the price that we paid. I walked in and the hostess's greeting made me feel like I was either too young (I'm in my mid-30s) or wasn't dressed well enough to be there by acting surprised that I actually wanted to eat there. Despite being nearly empty we (my mother and I) had to wait about 10 minutes before we were seated. We started with the Artichoke Soufflé which was more artichoke dip than soufflé was....okay. I mean it was good if you were expecting a dip. I had the Caprese BLT which again was okay. The pesto they use had minimal flavour and was watery which made the sandwich soggy. The mozzarella tasted very grainy and didn't have that normal soft, chewiness you expect in a mozzarella. Between the two cocktails, one appetiser and three entrees (one was for my aunt at home) our bill was over $100. I really wanted to love this place, the atmosphere is lovely and the menu by all appearances looks great but in all reality you're paying for the atmosphere and not the taste (or lack thereof) of the food. read more

Just wrapped up the most unbelievable dining experience I've ever had. Attended The Charleston for a baby shower with 12 guests. First of all, this restaurant charges $25 for each no show. Never in my life have I been to a restaurant where they charge a fee if the number of people in your party changed. But, okay, we went with it. We arrive and had Jessie as our waitress. She was attentive, professional, cute, friendly, just an all around excellent waitress! The manager wanted to keep our 2 tables TEN FEET apart because of Covid. Luckily, Jessie helped us to convince her that that was excessive since we'd all come together anyway, and she helped us scoot our tables a bit closer together. Our food comes out and there are not one or two, but THREE plates with hair in them. Jessie immediately apologized and had new food out quickly. The manager comes out to apologize, tells us this has NEVER happened in 3 years, then leaves. When our checks came out, we were shocked to find that the hair-meals hadn't been comped or even discounted! Jessie was clearly embarrassed and very apologetic. Not her fault though. I wanted to let the manager know that our party didn't hold Jessie accountable because I got the feeling that she was scared of getting in trouble. I went and told the manager that we really enjoyed having Jessie as our server but we weren't impressed with the food or the manager's handling of the situation. That started a 15 minute stand-off between 7 women in our party and the manager and owner regarding who was at fault, and culminating with the owner threatening multiple times to fire someone and telling us we were invited not to come back. A few gems from this conversation from the owner/management: "Someone is going to lose their job over this." Why would you say that in front of customers? Incredibly unprofessional. "I don't care who you tell. Tell the media. If you don't like it, you don't have to come back." "We have a policy that Jessie should have told us about the hair immediately and since she didn't, she's at fault and that's why we didn't comp the meals." Doesn't make a bit of sense. And Jessie was clearly trying to replace the food as quickly as possible and then went to tell the manager. "Jessie needs to learn from this and its an internal matter so you don't need to worry about her." Wow. The owner of this place seriously sucks. The manager needs to gain some leadership and hospitality skills. I will not be back (not that I'm wanted!) and neither will anyone else in our party. Ridiculous. read more

My husband and I went to lunch at the Charleston today and we left feeling dissatisfied. You order when you come through the door, and then they sort of stare you down to leave a tip, even though you haven't even been served yet. Nothing was homemade. It's all Costco type processed foods that they assemble... The server used a baby voice that made our skin crawl. She didn't deserve the huge tip I'd left. She simply brought our food out, nothing more. My husband had the roast turkey panini ($8.5) and it was made with thin scrawny pieces of lunch meat. He ate it, but felt disappointed. He had a salad on the side instead of chips. It was a little bit of Costco's spring salad mix with the lightest drizzle of runny blue cheese on top. No vegetables, no croutons, absolutely NO creativity. I ordered the almond spinach salad since that's what the cashier suggested. She said it's everyone's favorite. ($8.5) It was a huge handful of Costco's bagged spinach leaves with all the stems still attached. It had four slices of an apple on top, some pre-cooked fatty bacon (from Costco), a pinch of sliced almonds, some pecans and bland red-onion vinaigrette on the side. I choked on the salad twice. I was so embarrassed. The long stems of the spinach should have been removed, but it was just grabbed out of a bag and dropped into a bowl. :((( Nothing was tossed, so everything was clumped together. I also ordered a bowl of white bean chicken chili ($3) and that too fell flat. Too much cumin, and nothing to accompany it. No cheese, no crackers, nothing. Bland, boring, and a tiny serving. I estimated it to be a whopping 3/4 C., and I'm being generous with my estimate. We thought it would be nice to give the Charlestown a try -- the restaurant has such a nice vibe with lots of sunlight and old Draper charm. Unfortunately they rely too much on appearances -- there's no creativity or substance to back the place up. If it was in a strip mall, they'd already be out of business. :( Save your money and go somewhere else. I wish I'd read an honest review before going here. I don't think the "glowing" reviews are accurate in the least. Nothing was cooked on location, not even the bacon. It's sad because this could be a little gem of a place. The food is good, not amazing, but really good. I went to lunch with a friend who suggested it. Cute, quaint, and friendly server helped us out. The server mentioned the daily lunch special (not a menu item) a salad for around $14, then she said you can add chicken for $16, or salmon for $18. I ordered the salad with salmon. When I received my bill at the end of our meal the salmon was an additional $18 on top of the $14 salad. With tip I spent almost $40 on lunch! Not exactly what I had planned and totally not worth it. Salmon was undercooked and raw on the larger end. I thought maybe I was confused and just misinterpreted the server but my friend understood it the same why I did and was flabbergasted. Just beware, they charge for everything separately. Randomly stumbled upon this place and boy were we surprised. The Charleston is off the beaten path in Draper but well worth the visit - across the street from Draper Park. Ambience is great on a nice sunny day - huge shade trees, quaint, quiet. The restaurant is inside a renovated, old vintage home. Feels like you're in the south. Food is excellent and very well priced. Roast Turkey Panini: Yes! Such good flavors - havarti cheese, cranberry jalapeño jam, slow roasted tomatoes, cucumbers, red onion, roast turkey breast. All of this goodness on the best Italian peasant bread that had the perfect chew! Caprese Salad: couldn't get enough of the amazing fig balsamic dressing. Very fresh and light. Mozzarella balls paired with the tomatoes and dressing was so good. Cilantro Lime Prawn Salad: Cilantro lime dressing is on point. Large prawns, slow roasted tomatoes, fresh white corn, Monterrey cheese and red bell peppers. Grilled Cheese: foccacia bread, sharp cheddar, provolone. I visited last week with a group of friends and I still can't believe how rude the owner was. I made reservations a few nights before for 6 people and had to give my credit card (I thought was strange for a Wednesday night) but oh well. He told me I would be charged if we didn't cancel in advance. One person got sick and couldn't come- I called the restaurant as soon as I could (they don't open until 5) as a courtesy and the owner told me that I would be charged $50 for the missing person. I couldn't believe he was serious. He was dead serious and extremely rude. I told him I didn't think we would be coming at all then. He threatened to charge my card $300 if we didn't come! I couldn't even believe what I was hearing. He said maybe the manager would be willing to drop the fee (he is the owner!). Then, to top it off, he tells me that now we will have to sit outside because the 5 of us can no longer sit inside at the 6 top he had planned for. I told him we were fine to sit at a table for 6 and told him I was concerned about it being cold out - he said "I hope it's not" as rude as can be. I can't believe we actually showed up but I didn't want to hassle with my credit card being charged. When we got there, it was wide open all night with plenty of open 6 tops. It was a random Wednesday night/ not New Year's Eve! The food and service was fine. Other than the fact that they would only take one credit card and didn't fill our waters or come back once we had paid. I will never go back to this place. From that point, there was a concerted effort to take our money and get us out as quickly as possible. Payment was asked for before any offer of dessert. At 10:45 PM, they indicated that the sprinklers would be turned on so we had better wrap things up. Up to that point, everything had been perfectly cordial with no confrontation. From there, the situation escalated with the snarky French owner. It was mutually agreed that we would never come back. I indicated I would be writing a Yelp review when he yelled that he didn't care about Yelp. I usually don't give places 5 stars unless everything is absolutely perfect (service and food). At the Charleston, service was a bit slow but the food made up for it. I only got the cheese plate (which was a special that night) but it was one of the best cheese plates I've ever had. It really made me feel like I was in Europe, eating fresh artisan cheeses. The location is also great. There aren't very many places you can go in Draper to grab a cocktail and some good appetizers but this place is definitely one of my go-to's now. read more

This was, by far the best food and best service I've had in quite some time! I can't decide if I'm more pleased with the service or the food, as both were off the hook. We were pressed for time and called to make a reservation at 8:45p. We would not be able to arrive until at least 9, and the restaurant was set to close at 9:30. Abby, the scheduling goddess, told us that it would be no problem for us to come at that time so we booked the reservation. By the time we got out the door we realized our arrival time would be 9:15 so we called to cancel. Abby encouraged us to still come and stated they would be happy to serve us wouldn't think of turning us away. She was so sweet! Upon arriving at the restaurant, we were treated with the kindest of service from start to finish. Kara, our server was adorable--ever attentive and polite. She also shared some interesting history with us about the restaurant (which is beautiful, by the way...and the decor is appropriate to the house vintage--love that!). When it came time to order, she was helpful with menu selection, popular picks. She made us feel very welcome, and we soon stopped worrying about having come in at the last minute. Beef bourguignon, Brazilian fish stew, and chicken paillard were the items we ordered. Had it not been for the manners our Mama's taught us, surely we would have been licking the plate. The food was fantastic! If I had to recommend one of the three items, I would have to pick, oh...I'd say...ALL THREE! If you held a gun to my head and forced the issue I would say Brazilian fish stew. It had the most delectable, mouth watering flavor of any soup/stew that I've ever had. Another thing we appreciated about such a fine dining establishment was the lack of pretentiousness. A perfect example was Charayne (love the name). She was one of the servers, busily cleaning up the restaurant, as we had been there well past closing. Instead of treating us with contempt for having come so late, she asked if it was okay for her to reset the other tables while we were dining! She proceeded to laugh and joke and share fun tidbits with us while we dined. She had the perfect ability to balance interaction without overdoing it. Upon leaving, the staff gathered around (since we were the only ones there) and asked what we ordered, how we liked the food, etc. They seemed to have all the time in the world to ensure that our visit was everything we hoped it would be. I can assure you it was all that and more. I can't wait to go back. This place sets the bar high for all other fine dining. P.S. If you like cocktails, be sure to order one. Mine contained an edible orchid blossom. It was beautiful, so flavorful and delicious! One of the persons in our group was from out of town and he was disappointed at the lack of IPA's in the Utah area. Although there were no IPA's here, he gave the pomegranate cocktail a try... and then another. After leaving he said it was the best dinner he's ever had. A group of friend decided to eat here after working out, and I will never go back! I don't eat gluten and usually order a salad for lunches or dinner. I have order salads almost every day at a variety of restaurants. If you are looking for a nice salad to eat, this is not the place! They are skimpy on lettuce and skimpy on everything else! I was shocked at what I received and wanted so badly to send it back or ask for more lettuce, but I was with friends and just ate it! Then went home and got something else to eat. Waste of money. The food was fair but not for the prices they charge. The one star is for the attitude of the owner. We made a reservation for 5 but one of our guests couldn't come. We were charged $50 for that person which we didn't pay attention to when we paid our bill (my fault), and we weren't told about it when we made the reservation. Afterwards, when we realized what had happened, we looked on his website and were able to find a statement about a $25 charge for no-shows. When we called the owner to ask for a refund, he would not budge and said he told us about the charge when we made the reservation and that his website was wrong. Buyer beware! He can have his extra $50 now, but he just lost any chance at $250 + in revenue in my repeat business. We should have looked at these reviews before we chose this restaurant. read more
