Wow. This place is pretty huge on the inside and it is chock full of stuff! Yeah, they have small grocery carts because it is difficult too pass up any of their items. International. Iconic. Novelty. Chocolate, snacks, candies, cheeses, meats, drinks, pastas, etc. etc. etc. etc. You just have to come and take a look for yourself. You may want to keep your credit cards and cash at home so you will not blow it all in one visit, there's so much that will tempt you to buy. Employees are very proud of their store and they are very helpful. The prices were surprisingly very reasonable and from what I could tell, not any more than what you would find in other stores. I thought that they would have jacked up the prices, particularly on the international items, but everything is priced reasonably. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. I might do repeat business if it is convenient, the only option, the only one in its category, or on a whim, but would not be among the first thing to come to mind. What an amazing place to spend too many hours and too much money. :) I am still amazed that I got out of there for under $100! #Winning It's hard to explain what Pirate O's actually is, and if my Utah friends had tried to explain it to me beforehand, I probably would have passed on the visit. But, I am super glad I agreed to go! If nothing else for the Bear Lake Raspberry Taffy from Taffy Town experience. Buy it in bulk is my best recommendation and best review I could provide! I love Pirate O's so much, it feels like a place tailor-made for me. The coolest thing is that it's just sitting smack dab in the middle of an unassuming suburban neighborhood. Blink and you'll miss it. This store has all sorts of cool stuff! Grab a basket when you get inside, you're gonna need it. Here are some of the neat-o finds I've purchased over the years: original strawberry BB Bats taffy, super spicy pineapple hot sauce, Italian olive oil, chopsticks shaped like a T-Rex, a Sylvia Plath stuffed doll, vomit-flavored jellybeans, imported gingerbread from Germany, local creamery cheese curds, a miniature Christmas train set, atheist-themed mints, a butter sculpture shaped like a rabbit, a coffee mug that changes color, a pirate hat, a kitty cat flour sack towel, a dress-up Jesus magnet, sugar free vanilla soda, lemon flavored lip balm, and so much more! The real reason to come here is if you love candy. Pirate O's has an amazing selection! They import candies and other goods from all over the world, and you will likely find what you want here. I can't even list all the stuff they carry: toys, games, trinkets, pasta, sauces, home goods...the list goes on and on. I could easily spend hours just browsing here. The shelves are packed full with all sorts of good stuff. Do take note of the expiration date before you buy. With such a well-stocked store, employees can sometimes miss things and you'll buy an out-of-date item. Another pet peeve of mine is that while they carry an impressive selection of craft sodas, there are only a handful of sugar free or diet flavors. It goes without saying that Pirate O's is one of the best places in the world for gift shopping. They have gag gifts, useful gifts, and gifts that will suit any taste and budget. If you can't find something here that a person will love, then there is no pleasing that person! One of life's simple pleasures to me is grabbing an artisan soda off the shelves, popping it open, and sitting outside on the store's front porch on a lovely Utah summer afternoon. Other than their all-rock parking lot which has big dips & pools of ice/water/mud sometimes - this is one of my fav Utah secrets! The cheese/drink cooler room is the best. This place is freaking amazing! It looks unassuming and small from the outside, but every time you turn a corner there is another room CHOCK full of ingredients and packaged goods from another country. I had a blast going through it today and picking up some fun items. They have items on sale usually under a dollar. They call these plunder alerts. Most are in the candy aisles (YES! There are aisles and aisles of candy from other countries!). I bought most of these plunder alerts just so I could try something fun. I also bought spices, coffee syrup, and horse radish cheese! Oh my gosh! I've lived in Utah for 10 years and I have sorely missed horse radish cheese! I used to buy it periodically in Washington state when I lived there and I was so excited when I saw it I had to stop myself from buying it all! (And yum, I've already had some of it!) And, I found Coffee Crisp. Which is a candy from Canada. I used to buy that all the time when I traveled in Canada all the time for work in the 90s. So fun to pick up items of nostalgia and new things to try! It is pricey, but you have to figure most of this stuff comes from other countries. This store is fun! I like that they carry Abigail's Oven sourdough here. There is a large assortment of sweets and imported treats here, but they also have some common domestic items. The reason I knocked off a star is that the items that are not imported and I can find in a harmons are overpriced/marked up. I had minimal interaction with the employees here, but they seem generally nice but not quite as keen as talking to customers as compared to other specialty stores. I visited the store in December, and it felt very Christmassy and in a holiday mood, which was nice. They carried quite a bit of holiday-themed product for the season. There were many other customers in the store, and the aisles are rather close together so it was often a tight squeeze to get past people or try to get what I wanted. Loved the old Isetta out front! One of my friends that I grew up with had one in their barn that we loved to see when we would go over to play. Definitely brought up some fond memories before walking in to the specialty store that is Pirate O's. Pirate O's has some vintage and unique candies, chocolates, condiments, cheeses, and more! The store can be overwhelming with the amount of people and products inside, but it is definitely a fun place to look around and find old favorites and discover new treats and tastes. Great place at the holidays or any time of year to make fun gift baskets or find special things you aren't able to find at many other stores in the area. This was a cool market. Everting you thought about brands like Cadbury and Milkas is nothing. They have 1000s of items you probably never heard of or thought they weren't around. We walked in to browse and ended up buying almost a hundred dollars worth. From Gourmet Cheeses and Meats to Chocolates and Hot Sauces you can find it here. Amazing place! Brother brought me here while I was visiting from out of town. So many cool and not so common things for sale here. They had Bazooka gum which I hadn't seen since I was a kid! They also have an awesome selection of craft sodas. Definitely a great place to find unique foods, candies, sodas and other things. I buy the Voss water bottles (glass) and use them indefinitely to chill water in my fridge after I drink the original. My last time there, I wanted the larger 27 oz bottles but they weren't on the shelf. So I asked the owner, who spins around, grabs the wall phone, and asks his buyer to order some in. Damn, I've never had service like that! The walk-in cooler room has cheeses from around the world and a bizarre collection of unique sodas and drinks. Check. Incredible spice and sauce aisle? Check. An obnoxiously impressive wall of hot sauces yo probably hand never heard of? Check. This place simply rules. TIP: the cafe has arguably some of the best paninis in the SL valley. They use the high-quality products they sell on the shelves to make them, so they don't downgrade your sandwiches. Smoothies kick butt too. It's a one of a kind international grocery and specialty food store with lots of fun Knick knacks, toys and novelty items. They have a huge selection of European goods, candies and treats... even down to cans of Heinz beans from the UK and crumpets. So many hot sauces! And a full lane of items for dog lovers like socks and kitchen towels. They also have an amazing deli. Well I would love to give this cool store 5 stars, but I can't based on the size of the place and for the atrocious smell when you walk in that is so bad you can't get used to it. The space is way too small for the amount of people. You can barely look at things due to feeling rushed and from people cutting in front of you, but the SMELL...ugh...it will be why I don't return. I saw people holding their noses so I know it isn't just me and my husband. It put me off buying things as I didn't know what the stench was, it just tainted the place for me. After driving by for years I stopped mainly to get the turkey shaped butter for our thanksgiving table and secondly to explore. The minute I walked in the door I was greeted by several employees. I immediately began exploring one of the many candy isles. They have so many options of unique candy including many I'm not familiar with and some forgotten from my childhood days. Being my 1st visit, I literally spent over an hour in this unique little store - walking each and every isle to take in everything. I found my turkey butter as well as some fun candy and goodies that I plan to use for stocking stuffers. There are a decent amount of cute home items you can get for decor as well as animal style some kind of farmhouse chic type vibes going on. Really cute and has some super nostalgic food items. I could write several tomes, full of odes to Pirate O's. The exterior is horrendous and not at all indicative of the treasures waiting inside. If you have ever thought to yourself "wow, I really miss that one thing I tried in that one place that's o it carried there" whether that place is Virginia, Canada or France, it is also carried at Pirate O's. If you're ever in the mood to find something wacky and new, this is the place. When I am feeling down, I literally just go to the very large soda and cheese room and just pick something out there. I have always had an affinity for the wild, crazy and unique! Well, I found it all, in my new FAVORITE store and it's called Pirate O's ( @pirateosgourmet ), in Draper, UT! It's a gourmet grocery store and deli. If Cost Plus World Market and Archie McPhee's stores got married, their baby would be Pirate O's! Packed with unique items, like hot sauces, marzipan, licorice, pastas and every baking item one can need, it's every baker's dream store! They also have a deli and espresso area too! Named after the owner Orian, who started it, in 1997, he wanted to "bring great food, to the Salt Lake Valley area!" And, boy...did he!!! When you a enter the gravel parking lot, it's very unassuming, but when you walk in, it's almost like walking into a European grocery store, full of vibrant items and a super friendly staff! Everything is reasonably priced too! They have their own brand name unique items, like a Six Cannon Salsa, but also proudly carry lovely European delights, like all the proper Easter goodies, from Cadbury, Smarties (the chocolate, not chalk candy) and Kinder! Oh how I love this place. A massive selection of all things foreign fare from a variety of countries including where I grew up. It was very nostalgic for me to see candy and various foods that I grew up eating, some I've not seen it years! Keep in mind, this place is PRICY! Even things you can get at Walmart, Smiths and other grocery stores is sold here at 3x the price. I did splurge and dropped about $150 on candy, sauces and a variety of things to try :) but sadly the sandwich deli was closed for the day (on a Saturday, which I thought was odd) but this should be a go-to spot for all things foreign: Meats, cheeses, sodas, candy, pastas, cookies etc. They have it all and it's well worth the visit and hopefully for you, worth the crazy cost! read more
