Our server was very friendly and efficient. The space was well done and hope that it is able to become a year round option. Food was ok.... Highlights were the clam chowder (not the bagged, commercial stuff most restaurants serve). The cioppino and clams with linguine both seemed light on substance. The cioppino especially could have used more sauce and substance for an entree. We were also disappointed we had a gift card from bravo by the sea purchased in December. We checked with the ticket office after and was told they are supposed to be honored with the change from Bistro to Bravo. read more

This lovely little secret hideaway has been run by Duck Press in Wakefield this summer season, and the quality shows. For context - this is the restaurant that is located as a part of the summerstock Theatre By the Sea and is mostly there to serve the pre-theatre crowd of diners. The grounds are gorgeous as you walk up the restuarant behond the theatre and it feels like you are dining in a secret garden. Four of us stopped in for dessert & coffee last evening and we were not disappointed! The staff is utterly charming and the service was terrific. Two of us enjoyed the velvety creme brulee and other two had the chocolate mousse - and both were outstanding! (Added bonus that both desserts were gluten-free!) We cannot wait to go back to explore the full menu! Def. recommend making reservations, as most nights, they are fully booked for the showgoers. I seldom write negative reviews, but this was an utterly abysmal experience. We had a 315P reservation before a 5 PM show on 9/3/23, but the restaurant was closed when we arrived. While I had made the original reservation months before, I called the week prior to add one person to the reservation, and the hostess confirmed our reservation. There was no phone call, nor anything on social media or their website alerting their guests that they had decided to close that day. We were a total of 8, half of whom were coming in from out of state. 2 of our guests are in their 90's. Parking in the grass lot and walking down the long outdoor corridor only to do it again after learning the restaurant was closed was an ordeal, to say the least, for our elderly guests. Trying to find a nearby restaurant that could seat eight immediately, which would give us a chance at possibly getting back in time for the 5 PM show, added a layer of stress that ruined the entire experience for most of our guests. Perhaps a last minute staff shortage over the holiday weekend prevented their opening, but why couldn't they call the people with reservations to let them know? Why couldn't they put it on their website or social media? They don't care. I suspect someone will feign that they do and reply to this post asking me to call them, as they have done with their numerous other poor reviews. But, I've called twice over the last two weeks and left messages, yet I am still waiting for someone to return my call. They just do not care. Theater by the Sea is a fantastic institution that has entertained RI and beyond for generations. My advice is to not ruin your Theater by the Sea experience by combining it with Bravo by the Sea. read more

Had a dinner post matinee at the Theater by the Sea. Staff very friendly. Going through some renovation work. A lovely spot. Our party of five were first in. Menu is limited and they didn't have 2 of the entrees( a big disappointment) but the lobster salad rolls were good and french fries were different and very good. Didn't really want sandwiches for dinner but our choices were limited. It really is a gem of a spot. I hope they up their game. read more

From the minute you walk in you are greeted with smiles and made to feel like an old friend. The food is fantastic with healthy portions, made fresh and with lots of thought and care. As I understand it, Bravo is under new management by Ryan and Ryan and they are very involved, attentive and eager to please. Connected to Theater by the Sea, we went to dinner before all four shows this season and it was wonderful each time! Server was very friendly. I ordered the flatbread special of the night, Margherita Flatbread, it had absolutely no flaver. A tiny sliver of mozzarella on each piece, cherry tomatoes on top and a few sprinkles of shredded basil. I ordered a side Caesar and it came with warm lettuce and ONE crouton. my margarita drink didn't even come with a lime. We had a wonderful early dinner after the Saturday matinee. The host/manager could not have been more friendly. Since the restaurant is newly reopened, he also came at the end to elicit any suggestions we might have on how they could improve the experience. The waitress was friendly and helpful with suggestions and descriptions. We were a party of 4 and all enjoyed our meals. I had the roasted chicken with fingerling potatoes, which was lovely. The version of french fries that comes with the fish and chips is amazing! The fish wasn't your standard beer-battered thick piece of cod, but a thin piece of fish with a light coating of batter. For an appetizer, the calamari was the best of our choices. I had the mango sorbet for dessert and it was delicious. There is ongoing renovation work and plans for eventual outdoor seating. Great night for dinner and a play. We have tickets for the Theatre by the Sea and make dinner plans at Bistro by the Sea, which is on the same grounds. BIG MISTAKE! I had chicken marsala with jasmine rice, my wife had the lemon rosemary chicken. Both chickens were dry and flavorless. If I had been blindfolded I would not have been able to tell the difference. The jasmine rice was so under or over cooked, couldn't tell, but it was so HARD I had grave concerns for my teeth. Our server, Andrew, was quite attentive throughout. The manager came over, on her own and saw our plates were still sitting there with half of our servings. She asked and we told her of our dissatisfaction. Tanya was quite patient listening to my concerns, offered us a coffee, cake and glass of wine. Quess what? Only the wine was comped! Sorry Tanya, not good enough. I'll post our bill. read more

Can't believe the reviews I've read of recent experiences here. Guess maybe we've been luckier than some but we can only attest to what we know. We hit the bristro before a show this past summer and had an absolutely phenomenal meal. I had the coffee rubbed pork loin and it was probably my favorite pork dish I've eaten to date. The wife also had the locally sourced oysters (which were also amazing). Hope we continue to have great experiences here as we will be returning this July/August for Beauty & the Beast! read more

It was ok - salmon and cod were both good but the jasmine rice was old and crunchy. Service was horrible. I get it was busy but don't forget to take care of your table. We needed a drink while eating dinner and never showed up till after we were done eating and ready to go. Bistro by the Sea is amazing night out in the summer. We were up in south county visiting my daughter and we came to eat after the show Mamma Mia. We sat at the bar and our bartenders were friendly, attentive, and made great drinks. We shared the steak flatbread, brussel sprouts app and the burrata and tomato salad. Everything was fresh and delicious but the sprouts were definitely my favorite! We made other friends at the bar and had a great night out. Will definitely be back again. read more

Went here for the first time tonight before a show. Service was excellent. We had the clam chowder which was delicious. I had the pear and Gorgonzola arugula salad with added scallops. I can't speak for the food here, as we came after the Theatre by the Sea show for the Cabaret the members of the cast put on. it's very quaint on the outside, but it's strange, as I felt that the quaintness didn't match on the inside. It's like someone came along and said "why does the outside look like a hobbit house? I want to make the inside look the complete opposite of what a hobbit house should look like on the inside!". That made me kind of sad, as I thought I was stepping into a magical fairy world of a bar/restaurant. It was still quite nice inside, and the Cabaret takes place in a side room off of the main dining room. I would recommend this place for drinks after the show, and perhaps dinner before the show. But I wouldn't recommend this for drinks before the show unless it is raining, as there is a nice Tiki bar just outside the theatre. read more

Beautiful venue inside and out. The entrance was dreamy. Hostess was super friendly upon entering the building and helped me find my friends seated in the back. The dining room could have used at least two more wait staff. All the servers and especially ours was completely in the weeds. We had to ask for water three times and my waitress cut me off mid sentence at one point to try and talk to another waitress. She seemed completely confused as to how to split the check. Brussels Sprouts were delicious, however and I would recommend them. The salmon came out a little over done and with only 5 sugar snap peas as a side. We went before a performance in June for drinks. We sat at the bar and ended up ordering a few apps since others around us were eating and the food smelled fabulous! We had the grilled Brussels and bruschetta and were both yummy! When we went back to the theater in July, we opted to eat dinner there. What a mistake! The four of us were seated at a table that probably was intended for 8 or 10 and if that wasn't bad enough, the noise level in the big room was unacceptable. It wasn't as if just one table was noisy, it felt like we were at a ball game or other LOUD venue. Because mostly everyone was there for the 8pm show, everyone around us was at the same point in ordering. Our waitress was frazzled and took forever to take our drink order. She returned 10 minutes after the drinks and delivered bread "sorry, forgot to bring this." It was clear she wasn't happy. On to the food. Three of us ordered the seafood and linguine. It was good, although more lemony than I would have wanted. One plate had four clams and mussels that weren't opened (therefore inedible). My husband had the chicken Marsala which he said was ok but wondered why it was 'Marsala' since it tasted like a plain roasted chicken. No evidence of a Marsala sauce. Our bill, with no appetizers and only three cocktails, was $150 (before tip). Because it took so long to get served, we just made it to our seats in the nick of time. For that money, we all agreed there so many other places we could have gone for better food and ambiance. read more

After reading the poor reviews here I was almost scared to try the bistro. However, my experience was only positive and honestly the negatives do not even sound like the same restaurant that I ate at. Service was prompt, drinks were strong, food was yummy and it was an all around excellent not meal. There were 5 of us and everyone had a blast and will return for sure. read more

On July 5 we had a reservation at 6:15 for eight persons at bistro By the Sea pre-theater. At 7 o'clock we finally had a waitress come to us to order drinks. At 7:30 we still hadn't received our drinks or water or utensils. The waitress did come back a few times to apologize and during one of those times offered us water in paper cups. The waitress apologize made some excuses for why the service was so poor and told us the manager would be over to our table. Admit 10 minutes to wait we walked up to the door complained and told the waitresses that we knew it wasn't their fault but that the manager should be fired. It was inexcusable that no manager ever appeared at our table. we never had any dinner that night . We're subscribers and have been subscribers at Theater by the Sea for many years along with our-friends. We will never be back to that Bistro. And the owner of Theater by the Sea is ultimately responsible for allowing people to run a Bistro that has been unable to get their act together for the last several years. Horrible experience... Drove through A terrible rainstorm to get there...Got to the restaurant... Was seated at 6:15 placed our order and the order was never put in...1 1/2 hrs later the waitress comes out and tells us that there was a mis-communication and we do not have a dinner... 20 minutes before the show at the theater... I asked for the manager she did not come out... Said she was too busy to come out and speak with me... on the way out I asked the hostess to get the manager ... again she refused to speak with me... sent an email to the owner of the company... Never received a response... Would never go back again... By the way we order drinks and they were terrible I ended up sending mine back... read more

My husband and I went to dinner here before a show at The Theatre this past summer. We made our reservation for 5:45pm to ensure we had enough time to eat prior to the show which started at 8:00pm. They were clearly understaffed and unable to keep up with all the tables they had seated. It didn't bother us at first...30 minutes to get a drink...an hour to get our appetizer...but as 7:40pm rolled around and we still didn't have our entrees we started to be concerned. Our meal, yes one meal not the two we had ordered, came out at 7:45pm. At this point we were starving and in a rush to make it to the show. It took awhile for the manager, Tanya to come over to attempt to fix the problem. When she finally did she said they would have our second meal prepped for us to take home...for us to pick up after the show. I have worked in restaurants for years and never have I seen such blatant disregard for customer service. It is evident that the manager is unable to handle the restaurant, and equally unable to handle problems when they arise. Please note that while on the same premise as The Theatre by the Sea, they are run separate from each other. Therefore definitely go to the Theatre (it's fantastic!) just go to dinner somewhere else before hand. read more

It is sad that the food was very good but the service was absolutely terrible. We began dinner with the waitress dropping a metal bucket for shells on top of my friends Martini glass which proceeded to cut his finger. After a million apologies we were sat at another table. I don't blame the waitress for the slow service and for forgiving to bring water and wine as requested and in a timely manner because she was handling too many tables. I'm so sorry was her most common phrase. The double espresso I ordered had no foam and even though we arrived at 5:30pm, we had to rush at the end for an 8 o'clock show at Theater by the Sea which is part of the complex. To add insult to injury, we were not even offered a free cup of coffee for our troubles. Other high end restaurants have shown to be more gracious after much less hassles with the food and they have not wounded anyone at our party. Last time we do dinner and a play there read more

We eat at the Bistro every year before the show. The first show of the 2016 season I got food poisoning. I ordered a mussel zuppa appetizer and a beet salad. During the show I didn't feel too good and by the morning it finally hit me. They sent me a text to rate the food and service. I responded 4 times and they never replied. I was lucky enough to win dinner and a show from Lite Rock 105. To be honest, I was not expecting much from the Bistro. Some of the reviews were not favorable and I thought it was only successful because of the theatre. I was pleasantly surprised! Started with a cheese tour- the presentation was beautiful! Next came some New England Chowder- Delicious! I tried the coffee rubbed pork and my friend ordered scallops. We were both very satisfied with our meals. The mashed potatoes were the BEST. I had just wished there were more potatoes. We split a dessert- the Crème Brule was unbelievable. Event though my meal was on the house, we were treated well and received respectable portions! The best part was that they put our leftovers in the fridge and saved for us to pick up after the show. I look forward to returning next summer! read more

I gave Bistro 2 stars only because my 2 previous experiences there have been passable. I love Theatre by the Sea and go to at least a show a year. I want to love this restaurant. The food has always had an upgraded banquet quality to it. Last night, however, it was just bad. We started with the fried calamari app. It was bland, mushy and many rings not even cooked. We pointed it out to our waitress and sent half of the plate back untouched. We had the Wedge Salad that was very tasty, perhaps a bit overdressed and huge, but probably the best item to hit our table for the night. For the main course, my son ordered a steak and it was very good and cooked perfectly. He was the only one to enjoy the meal. I had the Shrimp Pesto. Beautiful to look at, lot's of fresh herbs, however, very gritty. Suspect herbs not properly washed. My last bite of shrimp I had to spit out as I crunched through sand. My daughter got the Italian Wedding Soup special. It was grey. A bit too spicy for her. My mother ordered the peach chicken dish and is was quite unattractive looking and the taste was so-so at best. Ok, on to dessert. Choice of 4 options, we went with a key lime pie and 3 chocolate chip cookie pie. One of the cookie pie wedges had clearly been heated in the microwave too long, it was nearly impossible to put a fork into it. So showed the waitress the condition of the pie and got yet another, "Oh I'm so sorry" and handed us the bill...with the raw calamari still on it and no adjustment to the dessert that was sent back uneaten. We are done. We will definitely be doing our pre-show meals at Matunuck Oyster Bar. read more

Worst experience I've had at a restaurant in a long time (especially a pricier one)! We had a reservation at 6pm. They lost it... didn't apologize, and gave us a table directly in front of the door & next to the kitchen & host desk. All we could hear was the staff gossiping & slamming from the kitchen. I asked to be moved, (we did have a reservation) AND the restaurant was empty! They moved us, again didn't apologize. We sit down, waitress comes over (seems nice & get's our drinks, & brings my 3 year old's drink in a tall GLASS. Doesn't even give us 5 minutes & asks if we are ready to order. Comes back, we order & no exaggeration the food presents in again less than 5 minutes (clearly premade). She never comes back to ask how it is (not great & definitely & not worth the money). She does however come back within again less than 5 minutes to ask if she can take our plates... WE WERE STILL EATING! Long story short, they rushed us, which is SUPER RUDE (I was personally offended). It's difficult for me to say I had a bad experience anywhere. I used to be a waitress & I understand how hard it is. That being said I would NEVER return to this place & would suggest no one else does! p.s. I do love Theatre by the Sea. Just a shame this is the restaurant on the property! read more
