first night, had the Schnitzel, great. potato pancakes, great! night two we went for the ribs and the shrimp entrees .....not so great. shrimp dinner was overpriced for a very overcooked and frozen tasting shrimp. ribs were full slab and very small and fatty. tasteless except for the tons of sauce. service was so so, not terrible. Wife and I made a reservation (very important for popular long established Supper Clubs) and arrived early to experience the bar where we met owner Tom who was very busy before our dinner but after dinner drinks at the bar Tom couldn't have been more engaging & informative. At dinner, server was friendly, engaging and very professional. Heather checked back with us several times during our meal to ensure we had everything we needed. Salads were mixed greens with mandarin orange side not just iceberg lettuce, thousand island dressing high quality. Wife ordered the filet and I ordered the ribeye and Snitzel, all cooked exactly as ordered(medium rare) with a noticeable crusty seasoning that did not overpower the taste of the meat, very delicious. The potato pancakes were some of the best I've ever had, not thin and greasy but thick, crisp edges with a depth of flavor rarely found. The Snitzel will give Austrian Snitzel a run for the money! The relish tray was diverse and delicious, very unique. Pricing of menus choices very different in that you can choose a low priced meal or a high priced meal. Tastefully decorated thru out, clearly a Bavarian theme that fits well in the Northwoods. Certainly would recommend and will revisit when in the area. read more

Don't even think of ordering anything outside the German section of the menu. It's so authentic and the service is like nothing you'll get elsewhere. We tried chippewa inn after not being there in years. 1 ordered the walleye came out looked beautiful but it wasn't done inside. So we ordered again. Once again wasn't done. So order sauerbraten it was ok but was served with spaetzle or red cabbage Well they didn't come over to say anything about the raw fish charged us for the sauerbraten no free dessert no free meal or apology. It definitely has been around awhile. It reminds me of the old school supper clubs from my parent's era, complete with Sinatra in the background. But it is classy and a nice soft, smooth ambiance to it. You can relax and carry on a conversation. That being said; they can make a decent cocktail, and the spread is huge! There are crackers, and a relish tray to start you out. Then came a salad or soup with rolls. The entrees are big. The schnitzel was tender,lightly breaded, and flavored well. I missed out on the potato pancakes. We had a late reservation. For a Tuesday night, it was packed. The ribeye was 14oz of goodness. Tender and seasoned well, it couldn't be finished. We took a piece of cake to go. Supper club prices, but the quality is there. The waitress was hopping, and yet she kept the pace going. It's a good time. Everyone around us seemed like regulars. Cozy little supper club nestled into the wilderness of the Chippewa Flowage. End of season was a perfect time to visit. When we arrived the bar was busier than the dining room so we had no problem getting a table. The traditonal menu has many steak and seafood entrees to choose from but we decided on the German fare. I ordered the Schnitzel ala Holstein with spaetzle and my boyfriend got the Kassler Ripchen also with spaetzle. There is a choice of soup or salad to start. Along with a relish tray and a bread basket. It's a standard fare of cheese spread, liver pate, radish, carrots and so on. Our food arrived perfectly prepared. I was impressed with the thin piece of veal before me that was crispy yet tender. The egg was perfectly sunny side up. I appreciated the detail of the capers and anchovies on a separate spoon to add if you like. The sample of Kassler Ripchen I tried was great. Smoked pork with nice grill marks to give it a little charred flavor. I would come back just for these items alone. Authentic "up north" hospitality was abundant in all of our interactions with the staff. My only regret, not having dessert. If you find yourself in the Hayward Lakes area, stop in for a drink and a schnitzel. read more

Dining at the Chippewa Inn was a true treat for my family on our Hayward vacation. I live in downtown Madison and dine out regularly, the quality of the food at Chippewa Inn compares! The food was so memorable, i know i will be back my next trip to the area...no matter how long from now that is. What we tried: NY strip Smothered Steak Chicken/Pork special w/ cream sauce Couldn't improve on any of it! Don't you dare leave without trying the cheesecake. It's to die for! My boyfriend, who doesn't like sweets, was loving it! This isn't my longest or best review, but i would say it's my simplistic. Hands down, go to Chippewa Inn if you are in the area. We were seeking the classic WI supper club experience and took a chance on the Chippewa Inn based on other reviews. Interestingly, none of the reviews mentioned their Saturday night prime rib special - which was our singular food goal. Their website doesn't mentioned it either, so I had to call to confirm that they do indeed have prime rib on Saturday. They do! And happily, when I called Saturday afternoon, they took reservations for 5 (my self, husband, our two teenage sons, and my father). Atmosphere: We walked in at 7:45pm to their regular Saturday jazz trio playing in the front corner of the bar area. (They play every Saturday until 9 pm.) They were fantastic and my dad was so, so happy. They primarily play jazz classics (vocals and instrumentals). The bar and restaurant are classic, old-school supper club, very cozy and relaxing. Food: Dinner starts with a relish appetizer with their own homemade liver pate, homemade cured green olives, herring, and other relish staples. Very good. One son ordered the ribs and fries - which he devoured. I didn't sample the ribs, but the fries were great. The other son was in a pickle - he wasn't as adventurous and didn't see the cheeseburger he had expected. (They may have a kids menu for smaller, picky eaters, but the regular menu is more "adult" i.e. no mozzarella stick appetizers, no hamburgers, etc.) So I convinced him to try the wiener schnitzel. (Chippewa is known for their German food as well). He ordered it with mashed potatoes and loved it. Hooray! The prime rib: easily, one of the best we've ever had. The three adults all ordered the small cut (vs. large cut) and it was incredibly flavorful, juicy, superb! Why no one else has mentioned their prime rib is beyond me...maybe they want to keep it a secret...but go! My husband ordered the mashed potatoes with his prime rib, while my Dad and I ordered the potato pancakes. Pancakes were very good, although I admittedly prefer a crispier pancake. Other options included spaetzel, baked potato, french fries, and German fries (like fried potatoes). Service: Very friendly. Wonderful server and friendly host. The bartender is also the owner and his son is the chef. I learned later that the chef has worked around the country, including France, and attended culinary school. Chippewa Inn is easily one of the best restaurants in Hayward. First off, the food is excellent. The ribeye, or any of their steaks for that matter, is great, as is the duck. Notable appetizers include clams, stuffed mushrooms, and escargot. Relish tray with tasty olives, peppers, port wine cheese spread, liverwurst, etc included. After all, it is a supper club. The German food is some of the best around: the Jaeger Schnitzel was the best schnitzel I have ever had, period. The staff is very attentive and accommodating as well as friendly. Has a nice Northwoods cottage atmosphere with tons of cool decorations including an old doll house that you just have to check out. read more

We went on a Monday instead and had the Brauern goulash special--excellent choice, good tradeoff for missing the sauerbraten. Also had favorites chicken schnitzel and "best of the wurst", all very delicious. True "supper club" atmosphere. If you like old fashioned Wisconsin supper clubs, this is the place to dine! The Chippewa Inn has a charming atmosphere with beer steins and doll houses lining the walls. Good German food including my spatzel made for a great dining experience. We started off with a relish tray - no skimping here - our group of 6 got two trays accompanied by a big selection of crackers. Choice of cream of celery soup or salad came with the meal. I ordered my with their house blue cheese dressing - fabulous! We ordered seafood combos, ribs and pot roast. Best restaurant, bar none, in Northern Wisconsin. From the great food (our fav - schnitzel al la Holstein with German potatoes and start with the salad with blue cheese and vinaigrette, hopefully they'll have apple strudel with vanilla ice cream that night), to the bar (Jack and Seven with a twist), to the friendly patrons, to the staff, the owners, the little musical trios that play and sing old 40's hits. My young son and I go here whenever we're up here and he loves it at even his young age. Love the nice relish tray with all the little treats they start you off with as well. After the relish tray, order the soup and ask for the check! Well, let me restate, the smothered steak had good flavor and if "good" is good enough, you found your spot. I ordered the crab cakes with German fries and a salad with the up charged blue cheese. My husband got the tomato Florentine soup, smothered tenderloin with spaetzle. His meal, the soup was amazing, the steak had good flavor, little too dry for my taste, the spaetzle seemed a bit "leftover" at best. First, the waitress comes over takes our drink order and tells us about the special. The special sounds amazing so my husband decided to order that, the waitress comes back with our drinks and after he orders the special, she says, "oh we're out of the special"! WTFruit! You ran out in the last 3 minutes! Anyway, you know then what he ordered. The house dressing, blue cheese was ok at best atop the plain greens with 2 slices of cucs and canned mandarin oranges. When the food came, my plate was under whelming at best. Crab cakes were dry and most likely just thawed, the German fries had no onions and weren't much better than your run of the mill $2.95 diner breakfast potato. When on vacation, I have no problem spending $100-$200 for a good meal with good service and atmosphere, I got none of them! read more

UPDATE: was there once in 2017 and in 2018. both were bad. steaks were not cooked to desired temp (which isn't a big deal, honestly) and steaks were tough to chew even when cooked appropriately. escargot was inedible. old review: they do it right. the bone in aged KC rib-eye was insanely good. would have had to pay double the price in chicago and who knows if it would be as good. old school place with a good wine list too. also, a REAL CHEF classically trained. no joke. read more

I've taken my family here as part of our vacation for over a decade, and every visit has been a wonderful experience -- the food is top-notch, the staff always offers a warm welcome, and the ambience is classic northwoods supper-club at its best. If you're headed to the northwards of Wisconsin, a stop at a supper club is a must. If you like a good steak, it doesn't get any better than the Chippewa Inn. Located about 20 minutes outside of Hayward, it's certainly worth the drive. The Chippewa Inn certainly hits all the right notes when it comes to being a traditional supper club. The decor is kitchy and down-home. Upon entering, you walk right into the bar. Get there early, have a drink. Supper clubs are not for people in a hurry, so make an evening out of it, have a cocktail before you're seated and enjoy yourself. Proprietor Tom Landgraff is typically tending bar. He's extremely friendly and will give you some good dinner recommendations. Before going on, two types that need to be warned before going here (or really any other traditional supper club). Vegetarians, if you want a place with a few options, this just is not for you. You'll likely have to settle for a few side dishes. Secondly, if you want an inexpensive dinner, you're wasting your time. This is excellent food and you get what you pay for. If there is one inconsistency here, its the wait staff. We've had some servers who are very friendly and wanting to make our dining experience great. There are others that are a bit more surly and seem disinterested in attending to us. So... on to the food and drink.You're greeted with a pretty traditional relish tray. Its a typical selection of veggies, spreads and fish, along with bread sticks. It will tide you over ahead of your meal. I'll be completely honest, each time that I've been here I order the same thing, the NY Strip. This steak can compare with any big city steak house. Its well seasoned and perfectly cooked. I tend to prefer a steak that is less fatty, which is why I always go with the NY strip, and I've never been disappointed. Its consistently excellent and high quality. Others that I go with rave about the stuffed sirloin, but not being a blue cheese person myself, I stay away from it. There are lots of great side dishes and all are really good. I've never eaten the appetizers. Over the time that my friends and I have spent up north, we've been to most of the fine dining restaurants in the area. There are lots of good places, but this is the standard. read more

I've been going to the Chippewa Inn since the late 60s, and until this year was always a family favorite. This year, it seems to have taken a turn for the worse. A few items on the menu were not available, including simple side dishes such as mashed potatoes ! The food was mediocre, and service was on the slow side despite having only a few diners in the restaurant. The good food, good service, and an overall good experience has degraded considerably and we won't be back anytime soon. There are simply too many other quality options are available. read more

This is by far the best German cuisine between Chetek and Garmisch! With so many classic Hayward lakes area supper clubs closing the Chippewa Inn is one of the best hold outs. It is a quintessential little Wisconsin supper club on the corner of two county highways surrounded by towering pines and bays of Wisconsin's 3rd largest lake. They have a full menu of tantalizing steaks and seafood items but I have only eaten off the distinguished "German Entree" menu. It consists of 8 items averaging $23. I chose the Kassler Rippchen over red cabbage with spätzle. The pork was delicious with a really good smoke flavor and a nice grill char. My girlfriend had Schnitzel Ala Holstein with spätzle which did not disappoint. To me, the defining item of a supper club is a relish tray and Chippewa Inn provides the creme de la creme of relish trays. The perfect amount of picked herring, liver paste, and what I believe to be port wine cheese spread along with some olives and the usual vegetables. The dining area is an intimate setting with tongue and groove walls and a vaulted ceiling. The walls are adorned with doilies, steins, and other cozy relics from the old country. I would encourage anyone who enjoys a great ambiance and delicious food to try it out. read more

The cream of broccoli was tasty, and the salad was very fresh. Desserts are heavenly! In fact, I've been coming here for over 30 years and I have always enjoyed an excellent meal. I stopped in to the Chippewa Inn on Saturday Night of Birkie weekend. We got there are about 6:30 and were told it would be a 90 minute wait for a table. Though the bar was empty, the dinning room was clearly full, which encouraged us to stay, since I always consider a full restaurant at 6:30 a good sign. Met Tom, the owner at the bar, and had a few good cocktails. Looked over the wine list and was substantially impressed. A better wine list that I've seen at any restaurant in Hayward or Rice Lake. (Not better than Madison or Minneapolis, but let's try to have some realistic expectations people.) Had Oysters Rockefeller and Escargot for an appetizer. (One of our party was set on having oysters for an app, and I couldn't see eating the raw ones that far inland. However, after eating the Rockefeller, I might change my mind on the next trip.) Classic Wisconsin Supper Club relish tray was a nice return to my childhood and the green salad I had was full of greens other than iceberg, which again is sort of standard in larger cities, but not in the Wisconsin northwoods. I had the sirloin, (excellently prepared) because I hadn't been here before, I ordered it medium rare. Next time, I'll be asking for full rare to see how it holds up. My bride had one of their schnitzel specials and it was tender and juicy with lots of flavor. One not on the steaks, they come well seasoned with a peppercorn crust. I love pepper, so it was perfect for me, but if you are pepper-averse, you may want to mention that ahead of time. As we left, we were introduced to Tom's wife, Debbie, who served as the hostess, and to their son, Eric, the chef. While we didn't leave until almost 10:30, thus having a 4 hour experience with 2.5 hours at the table, that's sort of the point. The Chippewa Inn had a relaxed, almost European attitude about moving through the dinner, which combined with the crowd from the Birkie (10,400 racers and over 2,000 volunteers descend on nearby Hayward for this annual Ski Race) made for a fairly slow night. However, considering all of that, I am astounded at the quality of the meal. I will definitely be back on a night less busy to see how the place holds up, but considering the challenges of that particular night, with likely fill-in waitstaff, and a hungry impatient crowd, I thought the Chippewa Inn moved to the top of my "north of Hwy. 8" dinning options. Only place in a four county area that even compares would be Bistro 63 in Barronette, but they are definitely not the same kind of restaurant. read more

we had reservations for 09/05@0630pm. was seated at 0635pm and received our menus. approximately 0650pm we ordered our drinks. at 0715pm we got to order our meal. our meal arrived at 0735pm. relish tray was very good. we both ordered jager schnitzel. it was basically a wiener schnitzel with mushroom gravy. i am not used to jager schnitzel being breaded. it was a good wiener schnitzel with mushroom gravy. minestrone soup was very tasty. the spaetzle was overcooked and dry. could have used more mushroom gravy for that. wanted to try the apple strudel but with the service so slow did not want to spend the extra time there. would not be interest in ever going back. read more

This is a classic Wisconsin supper club experience. A highlight of their menu is their Bavarian fare. The Vienerschnitzle is a must have. The bar often has local musicians (that are quite talented) and the German beer choices are impressive. Have had the gorgonzola steak, the pork chops, the pork hock ... but my fave is the Kasseler Rippchen (smoked pork loin chop) with spaetzle and I always keep coming back to that.
