The one star isn't for the food. We didn't even come close to dining and I'm sure the food is delightful. The one star is for the God awful way we were treated at the bar. We came in and were told the wait would be 20 minutes or "maybe 40". We sat at the bar, the only ones sitting there. The bartender was preparing drinks and walked past us at least 12-15 times without even a hello or a "I'll be right with you". He seemed chummy with people who came to pay their tab or pick up a drink. Finally, he said he would be right with us and finished up with a customer he called by first name and laughed with. Where we next? No such luck. He then changed out receipt tape. Seriously? This is the worst example of customer service I have ever been subject to. Maybe because we were from out of town and not regulars we were treated so poorly. No one seemed to be in charge. Everywhere else in the area that we ate at treated us with excellent customer service! read more

The server was great, and there were no issues with the service. Quick and friendly service. But for the price I expected more, I ordered the crab cake, the sauces were good but there was no flavor to the crab cake itself. Hubby had the dip sandwich, which he ordered medium, and it came out well done, and he said it was plain he did like the white truffle parmesan fries. Over $70 for a beer, 2 drinks, a sandwich, and an appetizer (crab cakes). I'll go back to Flat Creek next time. We spent a beautiful evening on the River Deck in the Lumberjack Village in Hayward. I suggest the thick bacon appetizer. I also enjoyed a sirloin steak salad; my wife had a salmon salad. Excellent food, service, and experience. read more

Beautiful location right on the river - you could even watch the logger races if you're in town during July. This is definitely more of a trendy, touristy, hipster type restaurant. Food is fresh but portions are smaller and prices are higher. I ordered the smoked salmon salad, was very disappointed as the salmon came out chopped up on a bed of shredded cheddar! I was expecting a normal cut of fish but instead it looked a lot more like cat food. The taste was also salty when you combine the smoked fish with the cheese. My friends ordered the BLGT and Grilled Chicken, again pretty to look at but nothing really special. If you're looking for a nice place to have some pricey drinks and apps, this is it. Otherwise I'd choose one of the other great places in town. read more

Food quality and service has diminished since my last visit. My recent visit was just before the Labor Day 2019 weekend. On my fried walleye sandwich, there was a meager, thin, overly-crispy (over-cooked) piece of fried walleye and the sauce in this sandwich was overpowering of the delicate fish flavor. The wild rice salad that I so fondly remembered eating previously was dull and lacking in ingredients and in flavor and texture. The service was unremarkable, and not terribly helpful. Horrible experience! My wife and I arrived at 5:30 on a Tuesday night and told the wait would be about 30 min. After 45 min I checked and the hostess who said another 25 min. After waiting an hour and a half I checked again only to be told that the manager had said they had to stop seating people. I have no idea when, but they didn't even have the courtesy to tell people who were waiting that they wouldn't be seated! We've eaten here before and enjoyed the experience but we won't be back. Very tasty food. Enjoyed the Brie flatbread for an appetizer, which was good. Had yellow fin tuna, which was very good, but the risotto was cold. The food was good, but like other reviews, the food and the amount of food just didn't add up. One crab cake for an appetizer for $23?! Very expensive for what you get. Way overpriced. The service was good. The walleye appetizer was dry and unsatisfying. The seafood ravioli which was supposed to contain shrimp, crab, and lobster only contained the tiniest pieces of shrimp for $49. There was no lobster nor crab, and the portion was very small. The cocktails were delicious and the craft beers were well-priced. We happened to visit during the Lumberjack World Championships, and while the patio has a very nice atmosphere with trees for shade and is convenient for watching the competitions, if there were no event happening in the Lumberjack Bowl, the waterfront view of the pond would not be very interesting. Wow! My husband and I have been coming to the Hayward area for over 25 years and this was a first time visit for us. Smallish menu, lots of items purchased locally - they advertise fresh ingredients. (Angry Minnow micro brews), my husband is a fan. The evenings special was lemon risotto with Asparagus and grilled shrimp,(my order). My husband ordered the steak sandwich, grilled and sliced with provolone cheese, charred red onions and garlic horseradish sauce. He shared a bite of his steak, and I'm pretty sure it was prepared in the Garlic Olive Oil from the local Hayward Mercantile; never a bad choice. It was done to his order and tender and juicy. The special started with a mixed greens salad dressed with some 18 year old balsamic which I shared with my husband. My risotto was a perfect blend of creamy and tart, the asparagus had just a little crunch and my shrimp were seasoned just right. Our server was Amy, she was helpful, personable and at our table just the right number of visits. We sat on the deck on a beautiful June evening and enjoyed our food with a beverage. Details make this a true dining experience. Fresh flowers on the table, a bar made out of recycled logs used in past lumberjack championships, and perfect lighting gives River Deck a captivating ambiance. You could make cheese curds anywhere. We stopped at the River Deck Restaurant on our way to Bayfield, WI. The restaurant is on a river, but don't expect any awe-inspiring views of nature as the Lumberjack World Championship area is right across the very slow-moving river from the restaurant. The ambience was nice outside (we were there near the end of June on a warm night), and our waitress was efficient and polite. We ordered the Yellow Fin Tuna Nachos for an appetizer, which was a good choice. The tuna was seared well and the greens and sauce made the dish very tasty. I had the walleye sandwich for my main course. While the walleye itself seemed to be good quality, the preparation (pan-frying) left more oil in the fish than I'm used to and the texture seemed almost soggy rather than crispy. Bottom-line, if you're in Hayward in the summer, and you're looking for something a little more upscale, this restaurant could be your best bet. You'll pay a premium for the diverse menu options and the view, and the quality might not wow the sophisticated foodie, but this is WI chic when it comes to outdoor dining in the Northwoods. read more

Favorite place in Hayward. Hayward is a difficult place for eating in my opinion, as much of the place is very touristy, and when I am here usually is the peak of the tourist season, and most places either do their best, or simply don't care, and neither result is usually that great. This place, however, was a fantastic exception. It is in a touristy location, to be sure, but the vibe is much more local and welcoming. Good beer list, good good, friendly service. If I had my way, we'd eat here every time we ate out while we were in the area. Highly recommend. read more

Great view on the deck over the lake. Great ingredients in all their food - plain and simple and fresh. BUT the prices are a bit high for what you get. Smaller sandwiches and portions. I ordered the BLTG (BLT with goat cheese), and while delicious, it was quite a small portion. Not necessarily a bad thing of course, but for $11 it does seem a bit steep. I'll definitely return because of the quality of food (and lack of fried things!), But wish it was a bit lower in price (or larger in portions!). Man, was this a pleasant surprise. No exaggeration, one of the best plates of food I've had this year. And in Hayward F-ing Wisconsin. I was only here once, so I can't speak to the rest of the food. But the tuna with split pea risotto? Holy Santa Claus %#@ was it amazing. Tuna was perfectly cooked, seared on the outside and pink on the inside. Rare to mid-rare. I don't know how it could've been any more flavorful. Same with the risotto: perfectly cooked, creamy, and delicious. There was also a brown-colored glaze on the outside of the plate, which was interesting but very strong. Smart to put it on the edge so you could choose how much you wanted. Salad with the meal was a solid mixed greens salad, great dressing (forget which one I had). The plate was $22, but to paraphrase Pulp Fiction, when you eat it you'll know where that extra money went. Seriously, I can't explain how weird it was to be sitting outside of a competitive lumberjack arena and eat that plate of food. If you're in Hayward and you like good food, you're an idiot if you don't hit this place up. read more

Surprisingly upscale restaurant in the north woods. Excellent food wine selection and service with beautiful patio dinning. Soup was delicious and served hot. Burger was one of the best I've had. When you first arrive, it looks like just another dive restaurant, but it is definitely far from it. We were seated on the patio which is very nice and welcoming. When we got our food I was blown away with how nice it was presented and how good it looked. Everything that we ordered was amazing. I got the sweet potatoes and the Brie appetizers and they could not have been more delicious. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone and will for sure go back if we are in the area again. read more

What a treat. The location and decor is fun and cute. This may be the best meal I've had in Hayward and I've been eating Hayward since 1972. I had the pork tenderloin. Best restaurant in Hayward, hands down. Never mind the lovely view and the nice staff - the food is amazing! We had the baked Brie appetizer (as my lunch meal) and the steak sandwich with the wild rice salad as a side. First of all, it was pretty hard choosing our meals as multiple items in the lunch menu looked very appetizing. The steak sandwich was awesome - cooked perfectly medium rare, with a nice sauce, grilled onions and other toppings that complimented the sandwich perfectly. The cold wild rice salad was delicious too. The baked Brie came with pieces of toast, apple slices, walnuts and a delicious wine reduction sauce. We will be back. Based on Yelp reviews decided to try it out for lunch and we were not disappointed. My wife and I both had the BLT with goat cheese which was very tasty and perfect for a summer afternoon. Anyway, if you're looking for heaping plates of lumberjack-style pancakes and other breakfast fixins, you might not be thrilled. But, if you are looking for fresh salads fish, sandwiches and drinks in a relaxed setting it's a charmer. To get the 5th star, they need to chop the prices a tad, or increase the portions.
