We secured a same-day reservation, and it turned into one of the best dining experiences we've had in quite some time. Don't let the unassuming strip-mall location fool you. Inside, the restaurant is intimate, beautiful and thoughtfully designed. Every table appeared occupied, yet it never felt loud or crowded. We could easily carry on a conversation without competing with the room around us. We arrived early and started at the beautiful bar, separated from the dining room by a glass fireplace. My husband ordered an Old Fashioned, his usual benchmark at a new bar. Served over a single large cube, it was properly spirit-forward rather than overly sweet and exactly his preference. I was intrigued by the Campfire Martini but don't particularly enjoy mezcal, so our bartender enthusiastically substituted bourbon. With chocolate liqueur, smoked marshmallow syrup, cream, cocoa and smoked graham cracker, it was rich and chocolate-forward while still allowing the bourbon to shine. My only minor critique was the lemon on the rim, which didn't quite complement the bourbon and chocolate. I suspect it works better with the original mezcal. Our server, Rosa, personally came to the bar to tell us our table was ready. That small touch was the beginning of exceptional service. We often share an entrée, so we chose the 14-ounce Prime New York Strip and asked Rosa for guidance on accompaniments. This is where she really distinguished herself. Rather than simply telling us what was popular or expensive, she could discuss ingredients, preparation, flavors and pairings. Her enthusiasm for the food was genuine, and her recommendations were spot-on. We started with the Caesar, thoughtfully divided into two bowls by the kitchen. Crisp greens, freshly shaved Parmesan, excellent croutons, house-made bacon bits and a rich dressing where you could actually taste the anchovy made this an outstanding Caesar. At Rosa's recommendation, we chose the smoked baked potato. She was absolutely right. Creamy and light with a distinctive smoky character and what tasted like rosemary-forward butter, it was far more interesting than I expected from a baked potato. Then came the Prime New York Strip, ordered medium-rare and cooked perfectly. I'm particularly critical of restaurant steaks because I'm very comfortable preparing them at home. This easily ranks among the top three restaurant steaks I've eaten and may be the best New York strip I've had anywhere. It was seasoned beautifully without masking the quality of the beef. The house-made creamy horseradish was wonderful with both the steak and potato, although neither needed anything added. We were completely full when Rosa mentioned dessert. We agreed to hear the selections only for future reference. That plan didn't survive her description. We ordered the crème brûlée cheesecake, and Rosa suggested substituting bourbon-infused ice cream for the usual lavender. It was an inspired pairing. The cheesecake had a beautifully brûléed top, and the ice cream was vanilla-forward with just enough bourbon to give it character. I'm not a huge fan of graham-cracker crust and thought it slightly overpowered the cheesecake; my husband thought the balance was perfect. Considering how quickly we finished it, he may have won that argument. Rosa deserves special recognition. She was one of the most knowledgeable and genuinely helpful servers we've encountered in quite some time. She was attentive without hovering and never made us feel hurried despite a full restaurant. My husband actually commented that she should be training other servers. Too often, asking a server for a recommendation gets you what's most popular or expensive. Rosa could explain WHY she recommended something. She understood flavors and pairings and genuinely seemed excited about the kitchen's work. That made a tremendous difference in our experience. The menu changes seasonally, so a few things we'd seen in older reviews weren't currently available, including a bread service my husband hoped to try. Rather than a true negative, it gives us another reason to return. Fire + Smoke feels upscale without being stuffy. We happened to be in shorts and felt completely comfortable, yet it would be equally appropriate for a special occasion. Beautiful atmosphere, excellent cocktails, thoughtfully prepared food and exceptional service. The steak alone would bring me back. The smoked potato would bring me back. But Rosa and the attention to detail turned a wonderful dinner into a memorable dining experience. We went looking for somewhere different. We found somewhere we're already looking forward to visiting again.

My wife had some sort of Sicilian wine cocktail that was advertised as brighter and better mimosa and they nailed the description. It was an elevated mimosa that was light, refreshing and bubbly. We started with the wedge salad and potato croquettes. The salad was as phenomenal, the bacon adding the right smoky and savory flavor and the dressings paired well with the fresh crisp lettuce. I was slightly disappointed we didn't have heirloom tomatoes as they were advertised and instead used grape / cherry tomatoes (the menu listing mentioned heirloom and I'm a tomato snob). The Gorgonzola wasn't overpowering and paired really well with the balsamic. The potato croquettes needed a little more seasoning or salt and were somewhat bland but the presentation was terrific and they were cooked perfectly. It might have been the bacon aioli but it just needed a little more zip. For mains my wife went with the Bouillabaisse and asked if she could add a bit of the house made fettuccine to which the chef was very accommodating in making the addition. With wonderful seasoning and an abundant amount of shrimp, scallop, salmon and mussels she couldn't finish her serving. This dish was fragrant and cooked to perfection. I had the filet and it was also amazing. Cooked a perfect medium rare and held amazing flavor. It was a solid and good sized filet that was definitely the star the show. The asparagus was grilled perfectly and seasoned wonderfully. The confit beet was amazing and held terrific flavoring and lended to the beautiful presentation and plating. We really wanted to try the crème brûlée as it looked amazing but we didn't save any room. The service was beyond terrific and Anthony took great care of us from start to finish. We watched the Chef oversee the kitchen and he didn't let a single plate pass through that kitchen without his terrific attention to detail. Overall this restaurant stood out heads and shoulders above other restaurants of similar type and it immediately jumps to the top of the list for fine dining in the Knoxville area. It was cooked perfectly, but what set it apart is that it was the most tender, melt in your mouth steak I have ever had. I don't know how they can get a steak that tender, but it was amazing. There were not a bad bite to the steak, it was really a perfect cut of steak that was sourced local. My wife's salmon was just as good, a crispy exterior with a moist, perfectly cooked filet of salmon. For dessert we ordered the Molton lava cake which my wife says she is a connoseur of molten lava cakes and is picky when it comes to them. Her verdict: amazing. Our salads came out, which took more time than seemed necessary, and before we could even start eating them, our entrees came out. The runner who brought her entrées, seemed confused as to why we weren't ready for our entrées. As we didn't have enough room on the table, we asked them to take our entrées back until we finished our salads. Our server, who seemed very pleasant, never came to check on us until after our entrees were brought out a second time & never mentioned the error with the pacing. Our fish was on the dry side, which could probably be attributed to the fact that it went back to the kitchen and sat under a warming lamp. We had a great time, because why would we let dinner spoil our evening, and we'll be back because I believe in supporting copper cellar, but I don't know that first time guests, or non-loyal guests would be willing to overlook an expensive meal that wasn't treated like it was expensive by the kitchen or wait staff. Tonight, we needed to run to the store, and while driving away from the city we actually commented on how there didn't seem to be many restaurants around. A few minutes later, we spotted Ye Olde Steak House sitting off the road on the left and immediately thought, "That place has character." After shopping, we decided to head back and give it a try...and I am SO glad we did. Walking inside felt like stepping into an old rustic cabin full of warmth and history. We were greeted by a gentleman in an apron who welcomed us with a smile and joked, "Well, I don't typically seat people, but let's give it a try." He laughed, found our server, Kendall, and got us settled at a table. From the moment we sat down, the atmosphere felt homey, genuine, and completely unpretentious in the best possible way. The gentleman chatted with us for a moment and mentioned he had worked there for 57 years. When we looked at the menu and read the story on the front, everything clicked...this place is truly a Knoxville institution that has perfected its craft over generations. The menu was refreshingly simple: appetizers, sandwiches, sides, steaks, prime rib, chicken, shrimp, combos, specialties and desserts. No gimmicks. Just great food done right. Kendall was our server, and she was absolutely wonderful from start to finish. So kind, genuine, attentive, and full of great recommendations. We started with the charbroiled shrimp she suggested, and WOW...incredible flavor. Served with drawn butter, but honestly didn't even need it. We could have easily ordered a second round. The salads were old-school perfection: fresh iceberg lettuce, tomato, purple onion, carrots...exactly the kind of starter salad I love. We added bacon and cheese, and the homemade ranch was fantastic. Then came the star of the show: our filets. As a native Texan, I do not take steak lightly. We are surrounded by incredible steakhouses and barbecue back home, so I came in ready to judge. The gentleman who was cooking actually brought the steaks out himself and asked us to cut into them to ensure they were cooked properly. Y'all...this steak was fantastic. Tender like butter. Perfectly cooked. Honestly a great steak...sure kicked the pants off some of those high-end steakhouses that charge triple the price. My baked potato was perfectly cooked and a decent sized potato too. And I have to mention the little touches too...the club crackers and cheese spread they bring to the table when you arrive were an unexpected surprise. I'm not a big bread person so I enjoyed that difference. One of my favorite parts of the evening was simply watching the dining room around us. Prime rib plates were flying out nonstop, and at one point the woman behind us gave her husband a bite of hers. He closed his eyes and said, "Oh my gosh, that is amazing!" You could literally see the joy on his face. Safe to say when I return to Knoxville, I WILL be ordering the prime rib. As the night went on, we realized the gentleman who originally seated us was actually the owner, David. He came back by to check on our meal, and later we saw him bussing tables and helping everywhere he could. When we asked if he does it all, he simply smiled and said one of his servers was out sick and he wanted to help. Kendall later confirmed he's the owner and told us, "He's the kindest man. He does everything...cuts meat, seats tables, helps cook, cleans up... whatever is needed." She also said she truly loves working for him, and honestly, you can feel that culture throughout the restaurant. This isn't a flashy, fancy steakhouse...it's something different. It's authentic. Family-owned. Generational. A place built on hard work, hospitality, consistency, and genuinely outstanding food. If you're visiting Knoxville or even just passing through, look this place up and make the stop. Thank you to David, Kendall, and the entire team for such an unexpectedly amazing dining experience.
