We're in Knoxville this week for a conference and had been staying downtown, mostly walking or taking shuttles everywhere. Tonight, we needed to run to the store, and while driving away from the city we actually commented on how there didn't seem to be many restaurants around. A few minutes later, we spotted Ye Olde Steak House sitting off the road on the left and immediately thought, "That place has character." After shopping, we decided to head back and give it a try...and I am SO glad we did. Walking inside felt like stepping into an old rustic cabin full of warmth and history. We were greeted by a gentleman in an apron who welcomed us with a smile and joked, "Well, I don't typically seat people, but let's give it a try." He laughed, found our server, Kendall, and got us settled at a table. From the moment we sat down, the atmosphere felt homey, genuine, and completely unpretentious in the best possible way. The gentleman chatted with us for a moment and mentioned he had worked there for 57 years. When we looked at the menu and read the story on the front, everything clicked...this place is truly a Knoxville institution that has perfected its craft over generations. The menu was refreshingly simple: appetizers, sandwiches, sides, steaks, prime rib, chicken, shrimp, combos, specialties and desserts. No gimmicks. Just great food done right. Kendall was our server, and she was absolutely wonderful from start to finish. So kind, genuine, attentive, and full of great recommendations. We started with the charbroiled shrimp she suggested, and WOW...incredible flavor. Served with drawn butter, but honestly didn't even need it. We could have easily ordered a second round. The salads were old-school perfection: fresh iceberg lettuce, tomato, purple onion, carrots...exactly the kind of starter salad I love. We added bacon and cheese, and the homemade ranch was fantastic. Then came the star of the show: our filets. As a native Texan, I do not take steak lightly. We are surrounded by incredible steakhouses and barbecue back home, so I came in ready to judge. The gentleman who was cooking actually brought the steaks out himself and asked us to cut into them to ensure they were cooked properly. Y'all...this steak was fantastic. Tender like butter. Perfectly cooked. Honestly a great steak...sure kicked the pants off some of those high-end steakhouses that charge triple the price. My baked potato was perfectly cooked and a decent sized potato too. And I have to mention the little touches too...the club crackers and cheese spread they bring to the table when you arrive were an unexpected surprise. I'm not a big bread person so I enjoyed that difference. One of my favorite parts of the evening was simply watching the dining room around us. Prime rib plates were flying out nonstop, and at one point the woman behind us gave her husband a bite of hers. He closed his eyes and said, "Oh my gosh, that is amazing!" You could literally see the joy on his face. Safe to say when I return to Knoxville, I WILL be ordering the prime rib. As the night went on, we realized the gentleman who originally seated us was actually the owner, David. He came back by to check on our meal, and later we saw him bussing tables and helping everywhere he could. When we asked if he does it all, he simply smiled and said one of his servers was out sick and he wanted to help. Kendall later confirmed he's the owner and told us, "He's the kindest man. He does everything...cuts meat, seats tables, helps cook, cleans up... whatever is needed." She also said she truly loves working for him, and honestly, you can feel that culture throughout the restaurant. This isn't a flashy, fancy steakhouse...it's something different. It's authentic. Family-owned. Generational. A place built on hard work, hospitality, consistency, and genuinely outstanding food. If you're visiting Knoxville or even just passing through, look this place up and make the stop. Thank you to David, Kendall, and the entire team for such an unexpectedly amazing dining experience. There were many things that were unimpressive to me at first- no reservations, didn't have wine, decorating was ok, no dress code..... BUT THE FOOD WAS SOOOO GOOD!!!! Started with the charbroiled shrimp with drawn better- this was so good that we got a second order of it! We then ordered the T-bone which was perfectly cooked and melted in our mouth. This has long been one of my favorite restaurants. When I came in the hostess asked me if I had been there before because I looked familiar. It's been a while, but after I thought about it, I realized that the first time I visited this great restaurant was 40 years ago. They've been open much longer than that. I love the rustic charm. The food is always excellent and the service is down home impeccable. I always try to eat here anytime I'm in the area. Family owned by the same family that opened in the 60s. Imagine damn good food meets a very old place at the bottom of the hill (road). Nothing fancy here but the awesome food and awesome service! Hell, we had to use a specific door so not to let the little AC they did have escape. Got the 16oz Prime Rib, medium rare (on the rare side please) and I left with the meat sweats!! Definitely a disappointment. Prime rib was tough. Seasoned beans were extremely salty. The baked sweet potato was good. Deep fried onion rings were overdone. Really interesting location right off the highway and a confusing parking lot. You have an initial parking lot that has a really weird layout and then extra parking is in the waaaaaaaay back - you have to drive up and over a hill into a barren lot that seems like it will be used for some future development. The inside of the restaurant is very homey and cool, though. Be ready to pay a pretty penny - but you are getting some good food. I went with the ribeye + shrimp combo, which tasted good. I got potatoes for a side, which I found to be good too. I don't think I'd come back, but you do get some pretty good food here. Went to Ye Olde the other day. I had gone years ago and really wanted to support a local icon again. You park above the restaurant, but it would be nice if they could make a nice walkway with handles to come down the hill. You walk in the road, which runs next to the restaurant, in order to get to the entrance. Isn't very safe. The restaurant had curtains near the kitchen areas and storage closets. Glancing down the hall, you could tell it was messy. Our server did a good job and was nice. The iced tea was good. I got the prime rib and wasn't excited to spend $50 for an entree that was mainly fat. The one another member of my party had looked great. The potato was good though. Another person got the hamburger steak medium well with mushrooms and gravy; the meat was well done. I didn't think I was at a steakhouse when we were being served crackers instead of bread...it really cheapened the experience. The bathroom is disappointing and is like a gas station bathroom. I would have thought it would have been remodeled since the fire. However, it had the same gas station sink, the floor sank in on the toilet, and there was toilet water all over the floor. Oh, you have to walk through a filthy curtained storage closet to access the bathroom door, which doesn't close without the lock put on it. I don't know if I want to go back when I can spend the same $ and have a nicer experience. read more

The Aesthetic: Lodge style, romantic steakhouse with an impressive steak, seafood, and dessert menu. The Price: The price is higher for the area, but the food was very high quality. They don't serve beer and liquor, but you can bring your own wine and they will serve it chilled with your dinner for a setup of 2.50 a person. The Parking: The parking situation is stressful since it's located right off of a major busy highway. I wouldn't recommend parking right in front, since it's difficult to pull out. There is a side lot, up a steep hill on the right side of the restaurant that has a large amount of spots. Prepare to walk back up after you're full! My Order: Our group brought wine, and we loved that the server brought it out chilled for us, she was very sweet. I ordered the shrimp cocktail with a loaded baked potato, and my Dad had his favorite Prime Rib. The salmon and filet were also ordered, and everyone devoured their meals! The Prime Rib was so massive, my Dad took half home for dinner the next day! The Conclusion: This is a great steakhouse for a family outing or date night, we will go here again and again. read more

My wife and I went here for our anniversary dinner on the recommendation of a friend. Sadly, it was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. I ordered their *signature* NY Strip and asked for it to be prepared medium rare. When the waitress brought it out and I cut into the steak, I found the center to be raw and cold. Sent it back. The waitress brought it out a second time; again I cut into the center and it was still mostly cold and raw. Sent it back again. She brought it out a third time, and STILL the center was raw and cold. To make matters worse, each time she brought my steak out she brought out my same fries, which of course were now also cold. My appetite now ruined, I told her to forget it and just remove the steak from our bill. On the plus side, the few fries I got to eat before they turned cold were very good, my wife's prime rib was good, and our provolone cheese stick appetizer was good. When the waitress brought our bill I noticed that they calculate the tip on the total bill, instead of just the food. Tips should not be calculated on the tax, so I calculated the tip correctly and gave our waitress a $100 bill for our bill of $66.65. When she brought change in the amount of $33 I asked her where my $0.35 was. She informed me that they don't deal in change so she rounded down. She did offer to give me $1 back after I griped about that terrible policy. At that point I asked for the manager. I explained the whole situation, finishing with how the waitress had the nerve to round down my change after the horrible experience we had there. He offered to *comp* my meal. I told him there was no comping because I had returned it uneaten and of course would not have paid for it anyway. He then offered me a gift certificate for a future visit, which I declined since we will never go there again. read more

Have eaten there 4 times, since a church group loves to go there. I have not had a meal there that was worth the money. Had prime rib twice -- tough meat that was not cooked right. Ordered medium rare both times. First time came back medium well done. Second time came back rare. Texas Roadhouse has always been better, and about $15-$20 cheaper. read more

Absolutely awful. We paid something like 40$ for a ribeye and it tasted like mediocre hibachi. Slathered in margerine, poorly seasoned. Service was good atleast. Definitely hasnt been updated in years, but i actually do like the old charm of it. Food is terrible though, dont go. read more

Very disappointing, I hope this is a one off experience, I ordered the 10oz. ribeye, fried potatoes and house salad. I didn't get rolls like the menu/website states, I got crackers and cheese spread (like cheese whiz). The house salad was good, the blue cheese dressing was great and clearly made on site. My meal came out on top of my salad, I had to hurry through my salad so my dinner would not get cold. The fried potatoes were good. The ribeye was boneless, the menu states it's bone in. The steak was cooked to order, however it had a lot of gristle fat and tasted gamey. I tried to eat it, but couldn't. I didn't know him but I believe Bunt King would be cleaning house if he saw or tasted that steak. I do plan on coming back, hopefully next time will be a lot better. read more

Wonderful log cabin ambience, great food, and exceptional service. There were 4 of us and we had the filet & shrimp combo, salmon, and ribeyes. Two of us had the wedge salad, which could've been a stand alone meal. The grilled shrimp tasted a little bit "steaky" but no problem. If u are a vegetarian, you may want to specify that shrimp not be cooked alongside steaks. One of my nephews is on the autism scale and the restaurant was quiet enough to be enjoyable for him. I went here on the recommendation of a friend who claimed he had the best steak in his entire life here. The place is old, probably not much has changed since it opened in 1980 including the excellence in food quality, preparation and service, not to speak of the quaint and rustic upright log construction. Dr asking on a Monday evening at 7 pm was immediate although the place was fairly full. The appetizer was crackers and a cheddar cheese spread which while tasty was not inspiring. After perusing the menu I went with the 20 oz prime rib and asked for medium rare. My guests chose a petite strip steak, rare, and the King burger, also medium rare. Our salads came out quickly and were nicely presented with dressing on the side. One should not dally over the salad as the entree is going to come fairly quickly. My slab of prime rib came out filling the plate as it swam in au jus. It was the perfect amount of deep to bright pink across and through the entire cut. The flavor was fantastic and the meat was practically melt in your mouth tender. The baked sweet potato was perfectly prepared and came out sliced open in its sheath of aluminum foil. For dessert we shared a mammoth wedge of their German chocolate cake which was delicious. The cake was very light in texture and the five layers were held together with the typical luscious icing with coconut and pecans. Service was impeccable. Prices were what one should expect for such a high end establishment, but only $12 for the King burger and fries as the Monday special is a bargain! If you love well prepared and presented beef, this is a place to be sure NOT to miss! They take reservations for groups of five or more and are generally not open on Sundays. read more

We are local foodies that are always on the hunt for an amazing meal. My wife selected Ye Olde Steakhouse for her birthday dinner and it was spectacular! We have only had 1 meal here, but this may be our new #1 steakhouse in the Knoxville area. The locally owned steakhouse has a ton of charm and is beloved by locals. The steakhouse was filled with folks after the UT home game and there appeared to be many regulars. The cheddar cheese spread was tasty and moist, making it easy to spread. The fried mushrooms were great and a nice way to prime our appetites. The wedge salad was a nice surprise. It appeared to be about an 1/8th of a wedge rather than a 1/4 wedge, which was the perfect sized Salad before a bug steak. I had the 20oz porterhouse (medium rare) with a baked potato. Both were cooked perfectly. I ate about half my steak to save room for dessert. We got the Coconut Creme cake and Red Velvet cake to-go, but they look fantastic. I haven't been to Ye Olde in years. Last weekend I told my wife a wanted a very large steak for dinner but did not want to cook. We tried to think of a restaurant that might have such a steak. We searched through many restaurant menus without having any success. My wife then suggested Ye Olde, citing that you can add extra ounces to any steak. The atmosphere is a bit unusual, and purposely so. The walls support a large collection of old farm tools and just "old things" in general, much like a Cracker Barrel. Frankly, it's a bit kitschy. Being that I was there to eat, not stare at the walls, I didn't really care. I ordered a 24oz Prime Rib with French fries and my wife order the grilled shrimp appetizer and the Ye olde burger. The grilled shrimp were amazing! The were grilled perfectly, slightly charred, and served with drawn butter. The aus jus that was served with my prime rib was the most flavorful aus jus that I have ever tasted! The flavor was incredible. While I attacked the best prime rib that I have ever had, my wife dined on their burger. She very much enjoyed it and, although it didn't appear to be any different than any other restaurant burger, she assured me that it was. After our meal, and since they were closing, we ordered desserts to go. I selected the Italian cream cake and my wife got the red velvet. Both were exceptionally good.
