I first happened across The Churchill shortly after it first opened - which I believe was sometime in 2019. There's something here for everyone and the vibe changes by day and night - at night it can be a bit more crowded with the cocktail scene and during the day I like to grab an açaí bowl and check out the shops. They always have something going on here! My favorite place is the taco place. I will always be a frequent flier here - especially since the pandemic it's nice to have somewhere with open air yet still have food, drinks, and things to do. This place reminds of the Container Park in Las Vegas which is my favorite place. There a bunch of containers that have different food options and drink options! Pobrecito was SUCH a cute place for a drink! As tourists in Phoenix, we were walking past this area and wandered inside as the outdoor space had just opened up and we heard live music. We looked around and the bar area at Pobrecito seemed pretty busy, so we decided to try a drink. The seating was super cute and comfy, and there are a ton of games in the area that kids were playing so it's perfect for families too! Even in the 100 degree heat, this "outside" space was cooled with fans and in the shade so it was a great spot to enjoy the outdoors. I got a drink with a friend from high school and really enjoyed the casual layout and live music. The bartender was so kind and super funny! I ordered a piña colada and I loved it! It was perfectly made, probably the best piña colada I've ever had in my whole life. and only for $13! I would recommend this bar to anyone! I wish I had discovered this place before the day I had to fly out, because I'm sure it's wonderful in the night time too. read more

I waited a long time for this place to open with all the delays. The idea is just fantastic. In my opinion it is brilliant reusing storage containers as businesses. This helps with sustainability, reducing trash, and frankly, local business owners who might not be able to afford a building rental space. I say it is a win, win for sure. Inside the Churchill you will find a Mexican themed product shop, a jewelry type beauty boutique, a bar, a beer brewery, a wine shop, and of course Statefortyeight's new store front. For food options, there is Pizza and Mexican food. I might add the Mexican style latte is to die for!! I have been twice and both times the staff members everywhere were amazing and I met cool customers. I really enjoyed talking with the security staff. The shop owners are so friendly and it has a cool back yard feel. I might agree the music is a tad loud but I think that might be part of the acoustics of the building materials and charm. If the place finds that to be a problem they could try different days of the week. One day calm and quiet and another day to rock the music. No one seemed to mind when I was there. It seems like a good prediction this will be a good hang out for ASU students. I hope it does well since the idea is so spectacular. read more

I am beyond excited this place is finally open! I've been watching it go up all summer, and now having been there, I'm so excited for it's potential! Açaí place, hand made crafts and gift shops (two!) a wine store, two bars, a sandwich place, a pizza place (vegan and gluten free friendly!), a State forty-eight store (insert squeals of excitement), and a place called Pbrovecho which has agua Fresca, menudo, and the like! There is plenty of seating, cornhole, and AC and fans! I feel this will quickly become a first Friday highlight, Saturday night hang out, amazing local spot for all us downtowners/uptowners! This is a cool space in the Roosevelt row area. There are two bars, lots of picnic tables with heaters and a few food options. .. like a Mexican spot a pizza spot and a burger spot there was a smoothie/açai bowl spot, but it was closed when we were there. Just happened to walk past here on my way to The Theodore, had the same vibe as a place in San Diego that I had recently gone. I decided to pop in on the walk back to my hotel to catch last call. It was a Monday and at the end of the hours so pretty quiet but looked like it would be a lot of fun for groups and stuff to do for kids as well. Only thing missing that the place in San Diego had is an indoor dog park area. Looked to be quite a few food options as well. Had a good tap selection and at the far end there was also a cocktail bar. Bartender said that they had just had misters installed to help keep it cool in the summer. read more

The full story is in the emails attached, but in short, a male, staff member aggressively told me to "F*** off". I asked for a manager multiple times and the same individual told me he was the manager. I was then told by others that there was not one available and I left. Not sure if that is true, or not, but I attempted to reach out to management regarding my situation and was told that "F*** you" was not personally directed at me? And was asked not to return. Ha! I would NEVER return to this establishment as I felt extremely threatened and I am truly stunned at the response I received. Been here lots since 2018, mostly since it's a cool concept and it serves as a good middle meeting point for my friends scattered across the valley. There's something about a shared space that inherently makes it cool and ~*modern*~. And the Churchill is pretty cool. There's a decent amount of seating, two bars to choose from drinks, and depending on the night a couple of food options. The food her isn't bad by any means, but rarely is it phenomenal. All of the seating and bar games make up the center of the Churchill. If it does happen to be a very busy night, expect hunting down seating. This also isn't a bar that you go out to dance. However, it is a great spot to catch up with friends. Parking is just like most other downtown Phoenix parking, which can be a hunt on a weekend night so Uber or carpool! Overall, a pretty neat concept, and one I'll return to again and again. read more

This is such a great concept IF all shops were restaurants & bars only and IF ALL (the few ) opened at the same time (hint hint Provecho!)...also they shouldn't be out of anything when it's such a limited menu (hint to Stoop Kid being out of bacon for their bacon burger!). We've been to places with a similar concept (shoutout to The Windmill in Carlsbad, Ca) as this works fantastic and is packed because there are so many food options! Unfortunately, I would say that The Churchill is on the right path and could do real well with this advice but instead is really an Epic Fail. Now that I've visited every business and tried every food and drink spot inside The Churchill, I feel I'm ready to render at least a current verdict. Though I'll admit a lot of my judgment is in the shadows (literally and figuratively) of the recently defunct DeSoto Central Market. Both Churchill and DeSoto have had similar goals. One failed while the other (at least for now) has been able to thrive. In the case of DeSoto, it was the opportunity to resurrect (and rescue) an old Downtown landmark. While The Churchill is trying to build a landmark from the ground up. Before talking further about DeSoto, let's talk about The Churchill a bit more. On the northeast corner of 1st Street & Garfield, Kell Duncan and Harlie Rodie took control of an abandoned lot and decided to try something truly crazy and unique. Armed with a whole bunch of used shipping containers and artwork created from the metal of shipping containers, a 14,000 square foot covered business incubator and gathering space was created. In all, 10 individual businesses occupy this space with most of them being of the food and drink variety. Though there's also a StateFortyEight clothing store and a pair of stores selling random household items of the decorative and functional variety. But the beating heart of The Churchill is the plaza in the middle. A mix of picnic tables, booths, bar seating, and regular tables and chairs. The center courtyard of The Churchill is where the masses gather to eat, drink, socialize, and observe. Air conditioning pipes into this covered outdoor space to keep the masses comfortable year round and there's almost always a party, a pop up market, or a big meeting of some sort happening here. This can be something of a mixed bag as seating for regular walk up patrons can quickly disappear. It should also be noted that only three sides of the complex are reasonably safe from the glare of the sun. In the afternoons (particularly in summer), the sun can blaze through the largely open west end of the complex. Its perhaps the biggest design flaw of this otherwise largely well conceived space. There's also overflow seating on the second floor of the northwest corner of the complex, but thus far that spot doesn't appear to be air conditioned. So the space itself isn't perfect, but for most of the day (even in summer) there's space to relax in shaded comfort. The restaurant and food concepts that dot the landscape run the gambit. A cocktail bar, a beer bar, a pizzeria, a sandwich shop, a Mexican food spot, a wine vendor, and an Acai bowl spot. My top picks at this point are Foxy Acai Bowls, Freak Brothers Pizza, and The Brill Line Beer Bar. Each provides a good value with dependably good products. I've also bought a shirt at the StateFortyEight shop, and I've enjoyed a couple cocktails at The Pobrecito. Some of the businesses are more professional and organized than others, but for the most part each put forth an honest effort. In comparison to DeSoto, I wouldn't necessarily say the food and drink concepts here at the Churchill are head and shoulders above what was available at DeSoto. But what The Churchill (at least mostly) gets right is the layout. DeSoto was poorly fragmented, whereas The Churchill has a simple courtyard and perimeter layout. As a result the The Churchill space is more user friendly and more flexible. Genuine Concepts (owners of the Vig) have now taken over DeSoto so hopefully they'll find a way to reopen DeSoto and make better use of their indoor/outdoor space. For now, The Churchill stands alone as Downtown's most unique and successful business incubator. Throngs of Downtown residents and Downtown college students have made this one of the most active year round spots in the Roosevelt Row district. There's still room for The Churchill to improve (please shield the west end from the sun, mmmkay?), but it appears Kell and Harlie have managed to successfully turn their crazy idea into a Downtown destination. read more

Cool place that seems like it's a hit for groups to meet before going out 'out' or for a couple of drinks after dinner, but also family and kid friendly. The inside is split into two bars (one for beer, and one for cocktails) and they make a strong bourbon night drink for about $12. My friend ran into a group they knew not a minute after sitting down unexpectedly, so it must be a spot for regulars too. I love this spot - I always end up running into someone I know because it's the place to be. Lots of tables and space to hang out and grab a drink along with snacks, then maybe go check out what State Forty Eight has been up to. Pobrecito's drinks are a bit pricey, but they're strong cocktails. I can always find the perfect beer over at Brill Line. Sauvage has such a smart idea with the bottles of wine, but I never seem to come here with a wine buddy, so I've yet to check out their selection or pricing. My boyfriend and I had been recommended to come here during a visit to Phoenix. We came on a Saturday morning, right before they opened. There were a few shops open to view little goods and stuff, but the rest of the place wasn't quite open yet. We really wanted to check out the restaurants and bar, but I'm guessing we have to save those for another visit. There is an open space with chairs and tables to sit at, as well as a place for live music. It seemed like a chill, cool place to hang out yet.
