We had this on our must try lobster roll list while on a Maine roadtrip and overall thought this was a solid, but merely average roll. The lobster had light mayo and butter on the side (our preference). The meat was very meaty, not super tender or sweet. I actually felt it was required to add butter to this roll to add some more sweetness. I still liked the roll because the size was good and it did taste fresh, but the abundance of tail vs. claw/knuckle meat made it not rank as high as others on our trip. I am conflicted about this place. My first time in Maine so we are eating Lobster Rolls the entire trip everywhere we go. Was really looking forward to this place as I have heard so many great things. First, the good. The lobster rolls were really tasty and good. The bun is awesome. Good fries. The price is the price. Most places are all the same. To get a lobster roll with fries and coleslaw at approximately $32 is about average. The amount of meat, compared to other places, was less. They had the least amount of lobster in their rolls than all the other places we ate at...but they were tasty. They also served quickly so that was cool. The bad. The people working, mainly younger adults/kids, were pretty rude and seemed to just try getting people through the line. They weren't welcoming, which is ok, but at least be pleasant. They didn't seem to want to be there and were put out by any questions asked. If it was just me, then ok....but I saw them treat others the exact same way. Walking about Kennebunkport at lunchtime and we saw a line in front of this place, so we figured it might be good. I spoke to a couple of locals in line, and they said that this was the best lobster roll in KBP. My girlfriend chose the Lobster Roll ($30) and a large Cole slaw ($6). I chose a 1.5 lb. Soft Shell Lobster Dinner (Halve it's called for $29) and 1 pint of Clam Strips ($27). Total was ~$99 for lunch. The Lobster DINNER includes a bag of POTATO CHIPS! Big Deal! Feeling cheated yet? And the size of this lobster was the same size as the 1 lb. lobster I had last night. (See the picture from my review of Boothbay Lobster Wharf). There are two buildings, the adjacent has indoor seating, a bathroom and a small draft selection which was perfect to grab while waiting on line. So good! I thought it was pretty worth the hype. Waited 30 minutes or so to order and receive the food on a Saturday. I really like that their classic is both butter and mayo, and their unique buns! Less lobster fall out and better bun to lobster ratio. I would definitely also get the whole fried clams again if I return and highly recommend! It is the clam shack after all. Total rip off tourist trap! Paid $80, In Maine!!, for a pair or lobster rolls (which were more like lobster burgers with barely any meat, some nasty overcooked fries and cole slaw (which was decent). I've never seen a more expensive lobster roll in my life, so for nearly $40 each with drink and tip I was expecting double rolls filled to the brim, cause after all lobster is cheap and in season right now, but what we received was a complete joke. This place HAS to be some sort or tourist trap featured in a movie or something. They have a gift shop and the lines are ridiculous. It's the OG you have to go if in the area but if you're an out of towner such as I do know that this is a COLD sandwich. Which by nature is not a bad thing but coming from the west getting seafood that is not warm with drawn butter is just somewhat jarring of an experience :) delicious despite being cold but in Maine this is the way so when in Rome as they say....that being said around New England if given the option warm or cold I'd go warm. For all the hype surrounding The Clam Shack, the food seemed average, especially given the price. For the lobster roll lunch box, a half pint of fried whole belly clams, onion rings and a lemonade, our total came out to be over $100 for 2 people. While the lobster was fresh, there wasn't very much of it, probably ~6 oz. The roll was more of a hamburger-style bun than the typical hot-dog, split bun. It was toasted, but because the lobster was served cold, the bun cooled off quickly. We'd opted for the lobster roll lunch box ($32.95) which came with crinkle cut fries, pickles and coleslaw. The crinkle cut fries were crispy, but lacked salt. The same could be said about the onion rings. The onion rings were massive though, and spilled out of the trays they came in. Of everything we had, the fried whole belly clams were the most memorable, but $25.95 for a 1/2 pint seemed a little excessive. Given that most of their ingredients are locally sourced, the price could have been justified, but the super long wait tipped the scales for us. While I appreciated visiting this long-standing staple of Kennebunk, I'm not likely to return here for lobster rolls next summer. read more

Tried to order a clam/scallop plate but they don't have that. So ordered a scallop plate and asked to get onion rings with it but they don't do that. So I added an order of clams and a lobster roll that came in a round bun lol. The clams were good but the scallops were overdone. Lobster roll was ordered with butter but didn't get it.
