It comes with a somewhat healthy portion of lobster, but man is it wayyyy over priced at ~$35, realizing you're spending that much on a single lobster roll kinda ruins the experience. There are much better and much cheaper options In the area. Save your money and eat somewhere else. We were driving through, and stopped here after seeing so many high ratings. Well the food is over priced for what they give you . We got the calamari box and the shrimp box, lemonade and the blueberry pie. They left out half the order and had to come and inspect our table ( as if we were lying). However the food is not even subpar, it was really bad. Almost $28 and $27 for each box and calamari was soft and mushy and not fried well. The Clam Shack is a must stop when visiting KPT. The fresh squeezed lemonade is delicious and never too sweet. We got the 1/2 pint of Clam Strips which were delivered perfectly hot and crispy as well as the Lobster Roll with butter & mayo. Now... is the lobster roll the "Best in America"? No. But is it good and worth a try if you're here- definitely! Lots of fresh lobster and a unique experience on a roll instead of the traditional bun. So when we showed up at 6:10p and they say hours are till 8p and they were closed for the day because business was slow it was because of all the hype that we went back at 12:30 the following day 100 miles of driving. It pains me to review this one time Kennebunkport gem so low. Our family has been coming to this establishment for years. It's one of the first restaurants we hit when returning to KPort. In summary, prices have doubled, food serving has halved and it now feels like a run of the mill tourist spot. Most of the menu is fried (which is totally fine) but it's remarkably bland for fried food. Everything is well fried (crispy) and hot, but is desperate for salt, pepper -- something! So we were so disappointed when we arrived in Kennebunkport... our first stop was going to be the clam shack! But the hours changed and luckily we got to sneak a lobster roll on the way to the airport a few days later! Lobster roll... round bun perfectly toasted and a very good portion of lobster meat on the bun. We got it with mayo and butter. It was very good. I personally would have enjoyed more of both the mayo and butter on the lobster. Whole belly clams... man I love me some Whole belly clams fried fresh! The biggest disappointment was the store bought tarter sauce. I know a big operation like them they have to cut some corners here and there but man some home made tarter would have been the icing on the cake! Lobster roll is insanely overpriced, I paid like $36 for the lunch box which came with lukewarm fries and coleslaw. It might have been the scarcest amount of lobster I have ever received on a lobster roll. Apparently the price has nearly doubled in the past couple years and it would appear they are trying to overcharge tourists who don't know any better. However, the fried clams are great and would certainly recommend those. Just don't waste your money on the lobster roll. read more

This was excellent -- really good food for pretty reasonable prices. (At least from the perspective of a New Yorker.) We came for dinner twice and between the two visits tried the lobster roll, lobster dinner, fried whole-belly clams, fried shrimp, fried clam strips, clam chowder, clam cakes, and french fries. I came here for dinner after hearing wonderful reviews on this place. I have to say I was pretty disappointed. I ordered the lobster box and a pint of fried scallops. The lobster meat were tiny compared to other lobster places I've been to in the New England area. It was cold on a hamburger bun. It didn't taste much like anything. Lobsters are usually sweet and flavorful. Other places usually covers the lobster meat with mayo or butter, this had neither. Instead, it seemed like they slathered a tiny amount of mayo and butter on the buns. The scallops...goodness I normally love friend scallops but this was a miss as well. The scallops were over fried and on top of that there were pieces of shells in them. Also the tartar sauce was from the brand Kens (lol), no flavor at all. Lastly, I would like to mention the service there need some improvement as the person who took my order was fairly rude. Overall, food was bland and expensive. Will not recommend. read more

My lovely bride was disappointed with her lobster roll, served with butter, because it didn't have nearly enough lobster for a $30 sandwich. We also shared a pint of the fried clam strips ($27), which were very good. The fried clam strips almost make up for the highly overrated lobster roll. The Clam Shack in Kennebunkport is a must stop for? Of course, Clam Strips! Located right at the bridge in downtown Kennebunkport. The Bush family gets food here and in the indoor store there are pictures of George Sr. and Barbara inside to prove it. They sell Mrs. Bush's cookbook as well. Sorry I digress. Fried clams - awesome. Steamers - Awesome. Clam cakes were over fried. The fish box was good too small fried fish nuggets. The clam chowder was awesome too New England style (creamy), coleslaw was good too throw in a nice dill pickle. I posted a prior review on The Beach Plum in New Hampshire and spent the same $132 bucks here at a takeout window service place and only the clam cakes weren't up to par. Money well spent. Stopped at the Clam Shack today for the first time in 10 years. Was really excited to finally make it back for what use to be my favorite Maine Lobster Roll. Unfortunately it was a huge disappointment. For 2X the price there seemed to be half the lobster. Everything was cold. There was supposed to hot butter poured over but could barely tell if there was any and it was cold. For this I paid over $38 (Lobster roll & small order of onion rings) Such a waste of $38. One of the best lobster rolls I have had! I'd heard that the lobster rolls here were some of the best in New England and they did not disappoint. The presentation of a circle bun is very unique, but dont let it fool you. The lobster is still classic New England and the sandwich came with a good portion of lobster. I prefer mine warm with butter but there was an option for chilled with Mayo. The roll was also buttery and soft. The clam chowder was not as memorable but it was still a good choice on a cold day. During our visit to the coast of Maine, we did a quick day trip to Kennebunkport. One popular place was "The Clam Shack". Parking is tough near this place. We were fortunate enough to find parking in one of the nearby lots. The line was already long at about 11am. They have an indoor space that sells lobster dinner(approx $17). You can also order from the take out shack and bring your food indoors to sit at a nice table. There is also picnic tables outdoors. I ordered a shrimp tray that came with fries. The fried shrimp was a very generous portion of almost popcorn type shrimp. They were not huge but they were not tiny, sorta in between, Both the shrimp and the fries were fresh and not soggy. I'm not sure if waiting in a line of over 20 people was worth the trip but the food was good. read more

The lobster had light mayo and butter on the side (our preference). The meat was very meaty, not super tender or sweet.
