Ok, this is unlike most businesses these days so here's my take: Know what you're walking into then you can make the best decision for you. It's cluttered, crowded and seemingly disorganized. Almost like something from Hoarders. And it has a funky smell. So I typically wait outside. Mr Ahmed is brilliant, experienced and a master of all things watches. He has fixed several pieces for me when the other watch shops said it was futile. That said, I feel like it's pretty expensive and you'll pay for every little adjustment. (I get that, time is money and I want to be paid for my years of expertise, too.) But he'll gift you an extensive tutorial on your watch! Mr. Ahmed is knowledgeable and personable. We've had our Regulator clock since around the time we married (44years ago). Before I could tell Jim what I knew about it, he had already told me the history of the clock. I can't remember the last time our clock worked, it's just been a wall decoration for decades. This is my time writing a review but I believe it needs to be stated. Jim has worked on our grandfather clock for more than 15 years. He is passionate and intelligent. Yet this brilliance has always come with an arrogance that "no one else could work on our clock,. He never forgets to tell us that Google reviews described him as the best clockman in the world. His fees have always been reasonable until this year when he charged us an exorbitant fee for a service that took him an hour to complete. Much more than years in the past. We have always been satisfied with the outcome and simply dealt with his arrogance until this year. The first time we wound the clock after this service, there was a pop, and the weights were immediately misaligned. I spoke with him on the phone. He immediately blamed us for "winding it wrong". As I thought back, he has blamed us for many things. One year, he asked me why I had changed something in the weights. As if I knew how to do anything with those weights. He said he would come look at it. I called one week later, and he said he would come look at it, but it was our fault, and I would be charged the house call fee and anything else that he needed to do. He continued stating that his work was perfect and our fault. I was flabbergasted at his lack of customer care for a long-time customer. The conversation started off calm until he continued to blame us for the issue. It got heated, and he suggested that physicians would still charge for a second visit even if the patient died of a heart attack the day after. I was a bit confused by this analogy. I called the two other clock services in Richmond. Both were pleasant and helpful. My clock was repaired that week at a cost of what was a third of what Jim charged. The gentlemen did state that the cable was not wired on the drums correctly. He also fixed the chiming on the clock, which Jim said was impossible to do. Jim can continue to boast of his great abilities, and he is talented, but not as talented as others in the area. I also don't have to deal with his haughtiness. He will not steal our money anymore. read more

In 1972 my new bride and I gave my father an Acutron Space View watchfor his birthday. He loved that watch. In 1975 he died leaving that watch to me. years ago I had it reconditioned at great expense. One day leaving it to my eldest grandson. I had never been invited to watch someone work on my watch before. It was immediately apparent when the back was removed from one of my watches that a prior battery replacement at a different shop had damaged my watch. I grew up hearing the chimes as a child, but for the past couple of decades it wasn't maintained and had stopped running. I recently had my watch battery replaced here by the proprietor. He was friendly, had a gentle disposition and finished the job in no time flat for a very reasonable price. The location on Patterson is handy for those of us in Western Henrico and the West End of Richmond. I will certainly return when my watch battery dies again, that's for sure. I first took my expensive watch to a shop downtown and was told that it would be $80-$90 to service it in "HOPES" that it might do the trick. I stopped by Clockworks on my way back home and Jim (Owner) not only repaired my watch as I waited, he replaced my battery as well, all for less than HALF the price of the other shop. He was very pleasant to talk to and is now going to repair my grandmother's antique watches for my family.
