I stopped by Clockworks on my way back home and Jim (Owner) not only repaired my watch as I waited, he replaced my battery as well, all for less than HALF the price of the other shop. Jim is not only a subject matter expert in his field but was also extremely generous with his time and made a house call to work on a 40-year-old Howard Miller (with Hermle works) grandfather clock. Jim takes great pride in his work and is extremely good at what he does. I have taken my own watches and my girlfriend's watches there and even recommended others to see him for their watch repair needs. He operates cash only so keep that in mind before going. If you need a battery replaced he will replace it on the spot. The first time I I visited Jim I needed a battery replacement. He quickly changed out the battery and noticed that the last person who replaced the battery accidentally damaged the inside of the watch by bending a few prongs that shouldn't have been bent. Would never go back to Clockworks again, nor would we recommend this place to anyone. We went to pick up our clock after it had been fixed and found it sitting outside in the sun. Richmond is extremely humid in the summer, and anyone would know that humidity is not good for an old, wooden, antique clock. Very disappointing that the owner treated our clock in such a careless and disrespectful way...it has been in our family for years so it is of sentimental value and irreplaceable. As a business that repairs and specializes in antique clocks, they should know how to store them properly. We have been previous customers, but will no longer use Clockworks. read more

I took my 25 year old Tag watch into Jim's shop yesterday. Over time, moisture got into the face of the watch and it was difficult to see the hands due to cloudiness. The watch band clasp holding it to the wrist was also not functioning properly and would come undone frequently. I've sent the watch to Tag (the manufacturer, directly) and they sent me a laundry list back of what was wrong with my piece and also said they could not fix it as it was too old. Jim looked at it and immediately knew how to fix the problem. He took it apart, checked the waterproofing, and cleaned up the insides and watch face of the moisture. He then went on and fixed the bracelet. This all took 15 minutes. The speed and precision was remarkable. Its like he already knew the watch and was familiar with it. I asked him why the manufacturer couldn't have done that. He said simply they don't know how and the technicians aren't trained properly. Jim explained he had worked with watches all his life and went to school for 4 years to learn about clocks/watches. Jim did what even the watch manufacturer refused to do. I don't even think Tag opened up the watch to see what was wrong with it. If you have a timepiece that needs work I could not recommend Jim more. He was quick with reasonable prices. Only fixed what he saw needed to be fixed and what I asked for. Did not try to add on extra fees and was honest about the watch condition. In the future, I will not go back to Tag or any other watch store/jeweler for my antique timepiece that I wear every day. Jim's shop is the way to go. read more

I took a kate spade watch there after a jewelry store couldn't close the back after replacing the battery and ruining the waterproofing. Boom. He fixed it. After that, the watch hands weren't working because I had carried it around without its back for a month. He said some dirt/lint probably got in and was causing problems. Boom. Not only did he fix the back, but he fixed the watch hands and now it works as good as new! ~ 15 minutes in and out, with very inexpensive prices ($5 to fix the back, $5 to fix the watch hands!) I won't be taking my watches anywhere else! The reviews saying it's messy inside the shop aren't wrong - but some people thrive in that environment. Took my Michele here to get the battery replaced. First, he told me my watch wasn't that nice. Not a huge deal but not very nice. I had to leave to get cash because he only accepts cash or checks. He offered to do the replacement in front of me but I only watched for a few minutes. During that time he dropped many of the pieces of my watch onto the cluttered floor of his shop. Again, not a big deal, but maybe not super professional given the state of his work space. When I returned, my watch was ready and was working like normal. The service was expensive - $60. But, I figured it may be worth it. However, the battery stopped working again after just a week. Not sure what the issue is but when I brought it back to him he said he could not help because he had no record of him doing the service on my watch, since I paid in cash. So, now, I'm out $60 and have a watch battery that obviously does not work. I'm not sure if it is the watch or the battery that he replaced but I will definitely be taking it somewhere else to figure out. read more

Great experience today as I went to see Jim Ahmed at Clockworks to get two watches running. The first one was a very special Lisa Jenks watch that I bought from eBay knowing that it wasn't functional but wanting it as a piece of art. The second was my favorite Seiko that didn't work long after a battery had been replaced at a Mall kiosk. Jim looked at the first one and said he wasn't sure but continued to work on it while I looked around at all of the interesting clocks in the tiny shop. After he worked on it for awhile, he placed it in front of me and said "Let's see if it works". Then he took the other one to replace the battery and showed me that the gasket had been incorrectly placed IN the watch rather than around the back cover. As he straightened it out and replaced the battery, we looked at the first watch and it WAS running! Amazing that in about 15 minutes, he was able to get both of these beauties running again. I first met him about 30 years ago and was very pleased with his work then and I was more than thrilled to know that he was still in business and in the same location when I had to get my Dad's pocket watch working again. Of course he could fix it and didn't over charge me. So, while I was there repaired a bracelet for me that I never got to wear because the clasp wouldn't stay closed and it was brand new. I had one jeweler to tell me it couldn't be fixed and the other one wanted to charge more than the cost of the bracelet and Jim fixed it in a day and charged a fraction of the cost. I was sent to this hidden little shop by Carrera's Jewelers to do a repair on a band that required a larger then normal pin to keep the band in place. The gentleman who owns the shop, Jim Ahmed, couldn't have been nicer and more helpful. He did my repair and sent me on my way in 10 minutes. I gave him $10 but know he would not have asked me for money. While there I spoke with him and asked what he specialized in. He said he loves restoring clocks but also does repairs and even sells a few he finds here and there. By the amount of clocks with repair tickets I saw lying around, this is a busy man and he must also be well respected. Had to get a battery for my trusty Seiko and google gave me a gift!! The last replacement almost cost me my watch as they were less than honest?about the replacement of the gasket which gives it the water resistance. So, I drove up and went in to the delightful ( I love clock shops). A crowded, hodgepodge of clocks of every shape, size, age, and origin with world sitting everywhere. I stood patiently waiting my turn as Jim, the owner, finished with the gentleman in front of me When it was my turn he had me watch each movement he made as he took things apart and explained each step carefully noting the poor workmanship of the last mall watch shop as well as the lack of a gasket. Jim is careful, and very good at what he does and earns his reputation as number one I will return for any time piece issues and to see if he will part with a mantle piece with Westminster chimes. I picked Jim to fix my wall mounted grandmother clock because of the many positive reviews on this site. Now, I feel like I've been taken advantage. He took my clock apart, then told me it would cost $500 plus $80 for his trip to my home (we are less than 5 miles from his shop). The entire job took maybe about 2 hours (and 20 minutes to get it off the wall). He did not replace any parts, oiled the clock, tightened a few things, and put it back together. So that means he charged me a little over $200 per hour to fix the clock. At the end, he said the bill was $600 (not $500 + $80, but $600). When I questioned him, he simply said he is the best in Richmond. In the end, it sounds the same as it did when it was working. He did wipe down the face of the clock to a certain degree, but the pendulum is full of prints. At that price, I would have expected all of it to be sparkling and no finger prints! Had I known his service would be so overly priced beforehand, I would have gone somewhere else. read more

First time customer today. Normally I'd go to the watch and pen guy downtown but this place is closer to the house and had all these excellent Yelp reviews. Mr. Ahmed greeted me immediately and went to work on the two daily Casios I brought with minor problems (couldn't get the back of one open to change a battery, couldn't get pins/band adapters to line up on the other.) Very nice man, knowledgeable and friendly and funny and patient. Fixed both my problems quickly and easily while I looked at all the clocks. He noticed that one needed a gasket which was probably why I couldn't get it open myself in the first place. He took great care to not scratch or damage these watches also, even though they're nothing valuable or special. The price was definitely more than fair as well. Mr Ahmed is a very fascinating and smart individual. Upon entering his shop I was shocked with the amount of clocks that occupied the space. I came in to get two watches that I recently purchased sized. I brought in two glass pieces to have clock movements put in. He did a great job on the movements but he broke one of the glass pieces. He tried fixing it with glue but you can see the damage. He did not even offer to refund me for the clock movement. So I paid $60.00 and got a broken clock. I should have asked for money back but I was so upset not sure what to say. read more
