My family has been coming to the Cloverleaf for many, many years, and there is a good reason why. Their pizza has always been so fresh, satisfying, and most importantly, consistent. I've always had the kindest waiters that work so hard to keep customers happy. I love that they still serve little baskets of popcorn as an "appetizer". Stopped in here with a friend to try their large selection of some of my favorite bears with some pizza. I was greeted immediately by an emoloyee when helped into the door with my wheelchair. The place reminds me of some of the bars I used to vist in the good old days and I found out by reading their bio on their menu that they've been open since the 1950's. Guinness amd Black Butte Porter with their Monster Pizza was an excellent choice. In fact, I wrote this review after my second visit. I was so impressed following my first visit thatt I went back a few days later with my sister. The sausage on the Monster pizza was some of the best I've had in decades. I returned after a very long absence to what many consider to be a local pizza institution. My partner was unfortunately not feeling well but encouraged me to keep our date with my childhood friend and his lovely wife who is also a high school classmate. Although I was not in the picture on the wall to back of The Cloverleaf, we all first crossed this purveyor of pizza's threshold back in 1974. We ordered 3 "Huge" pizzas, "Huge" being named after an alum of our high school. Two House Favorites and one Turco for me were ordered. Yes, there were ample leftovers which greatly pleased she-who-must-be obeyed. Our server reminded me of Radar from the television show, Mash as she appeared with what I needed without my asking. I've had the pleasure of eating pizza in New York, Napoli, Boston and other locations known for pizza. The Cloverleaf does not quite earn a fourth star when compared to pizzas offered elsewhere. My husband and I have been going to Cloverly's since the 70s. We always loved their pizza. The service inside is wonderful. The last three times we've gotten pizza at the pizza has been absolutely horrible burnt very little toppings on the pizza. Summary... Pizza is BOMB! Bar service is grumpy, unfriendly, and kind of a jerk. I don't recommend dinning in unless you're going to wait until after 5pm and eat in the restaurant rather than the bar. Keep in mind that the menu states Pizza can take 25-40 minutes and that is 100% true. Ours look at least 30 minutes, but It was worth the wait. I went with a build your own; pepperoni, mushroom, pineapple, and I proceeded to douse it with red pepper flakes as well. The crust is perfectly made and the flavors were spot on. OMG update???? The only thing different is the day. Friday nite at 5:30 got a parking spot woo hoo. And as we had our food it's now packed and the noise level is ya loud!! Love this place! I had great experience with this place on Sunday. I ordered a house favorite pizza. I was here to chill on Sunday and watch football. There was some mix up in the kitchen and the pizza didn't get made. A server who wasn't the server who took my order noticed that I had been waiting over an hour for my pizza. This server was at the end of their shift and getting ready to leave for the day. The server who took my order had already left. This server fixed the issue and had the pizza made immediately This server apologized for the mix up that they didn't cause I wasn't upset and hadn't really noticed how much time had passed. I was chilling and watching football. This server saw the issue that I didn't even realize was an issue and fixed it. The server went home before I received my pizza. Another server from the evening shift who was very pleasant helped my with my bill and apologized for the mix up. This was not a issue she had any part in and happened before her shift but she took ownership of making sure the experience ended on a great note. I am very appreciative of the experience and the great work by the staff that fixed an issue that they had not part in and that i didn't even know was an issue at the time. read more

We travel from Portland (over two hours) just to have their pizza. It is sooo worth the drive. Their toppings are so fresh and like no other place around. Upon entering we stood by the door/ wait to be seated sign. I don't know exactly how long we waited but we waited and then took my 6 year old to the bathroom, came back and was still waiting to be seated. Finally my husband asked the bar to see when we can be seated and they said we can sit at one of the opened tables. After being seated we got our menus and a bowl of popcorn (every table gets complimentary popcorn). It's a good thing we get popcorn cause waiting to order itself is a journey .... (They are severely understaffed- I only see one hostess and one waitress despite there being a big party and a few other tables). Chicken wings was small but good. Crispy on the outside and moist inside. Salad was good as well- lots of bacon and hamburger meat and lettuce was crisp and fresh. We've been waiting for the pizza for about 30+ mins SINCE GETTING OUR APPETIZER (we ordered all our food at the same time). The hostess came to tell us that the kitchen dropped our pizza on the floor so it ll be "just" another 5-10 mins so now I'm typing my review as my husband and kids are playing table games at the empty table next to us. Waitress is kind and I can see she is swamped so it's not her fault. Hostess is slower and not as fast paced or attentive in comparison. Pizza finally came after 40 or so mins. It was good. Pizza made in heaven. The one we had (for four) was a monument to excess. I much prefer thin crust but the others are equally good. Excellent stuff. Quality pizza takes time, so of you're in a hurry, go to McDonald's. Servers are in constant motion on game days, so know what you want and get all of your order in: drinks, starters, and pizzas. New spot I was introduced to from Tacoma natives and was super tasty. Pizza is fairly thin and thus smaller for the price though, so all things considered it can be fairly pricey. We had 5 pizzas split among 9 and were pretty full. Despite being thin, it is extremely crisp and crunchy and the abundance of toppings does not break apart instantaneously. Speaking of the toppings, they're pretty generous on topping the pizza and aren't afraid to go all out. I liked that the cups were frosted - straight from the freezer or cooler. They were also pretty nice cups. I felt like commenting on them although they're not a big deal. For starters, you get popcorn as an appetizer which was pretty unique and interesting. I suppose it's a nice starter item for conversation and to just rack up the appetite. After that we ordered some garlic bread and cheese curds to start and they were delicious, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with lovely cheesy strings. The dairy didn't stop there as our pizzas came. While BBQ Chicken is a huge hit at many pizza spots, I didn't enjoy the one here that much. Not sure if it was the green peppers or the other pizzas overshadowing it, but I've had better. However, the Larsen was one we were all excited about and it did not disappoint. In short: An unpretentious institution that has served generations of regulars, and it's easy to see why they have carved out a niche for themselves. Great prices. In long: I've been hearing about this place since grade school, and that's a while now. I can remember groups of adults chatting about their weekends, and whenever anybody mentioned "The Cloverleaf," everybody else always had positive things to say. I grew up across town from here, though, so it was always something the grownies knew about, and not something I ever tried myself. Until yesterday. There are dozens of businesses stretched out along 6th through here. Actually, probably hundreds, especially if you count the cross streets. It's next to a tire store on a 4-lane road. It's a bustling neighborhood, to say the least. You park out back, by the ballfields. Yesterday was gloriously sunny and plenty of people were out playing ball. You come in to a place that spent good money on a complete remodel and redecoration, but it's been at least 30 years. Since then, they've added more and different beer and sports signage. It's a big dining room with a big bar, plenty of booth, table, and bar seating. More dining rooms around behind the bar. They can pack 'em in here--we saw couples, a couple regulars on their own, groups of friends, and groups of up to 15 or so pushing tables together in back. Everybody comes here sooner or later. Everything's clean and comfortable, well-lit, lots of windows. It's right on that line where there's nothing about it that you could call divey, but they wouldn't even care if you felt compelled to describe them that way. It's just basic--neither fancy nor divey. Service was clearly used to everybody already knowing the whole menu cold. They seemed almost surprised that we wanted to read the menu and drinks lists, but they got it. I will say that the young lady who came on shift was chattier and friendlier than the dude bartenders, but everybody was professional and on point. The beer list is almost all industrial-owned breweries, except for one Georgetown keg pouring. They have a couple decent seltzers, but the wine list is worse than awful. People are knocking back the big national-brand beers here. The appetizers, salads, and sandwiches seemed fine, and some people probably always get a salad when they get a pizza. But of all the thousands of covers they serve in a year, 98+% of them have to be here for the pie. We got the bacon cheeseburger, and two of us kinda expected a big honking land mass of a pie, buried in toppings. One of us was a longtime regular and just watched us react. It comes out and it's very thin--almost cracker-thin crust, but not quite. And much crunchier than what we think of as "cracker crust." It's like when you go to a Mexican place that makes their own chips in-house: the chips seem almost as thin as regular tortilla chips, but they crunch way louder and they're way sturdier. That thickness is this crust. There's not much flavor to the crust--as done as it is, it's not even dark brown on the bottom, much less charred at all. It's kind of medium tan, maybe light tan. I might have thought they were pre-made crusts, but you could see the cooks stretching and rolling stuff that clearly all came from this kitchen. It's their own invention for sure. The toppings are spread out just enough that each bite has a little more or less of this or that topping. It's not like eating a sidewalk of toppings, like we kinda suspected. This is still a rich meal, but a "Regular" size pie (11") for two people didn't leave us feeling beached at all. The "Huge" (16") is probably quite the workout for your stomach. We have a regular and 6 drinks, which was $70 out the door with a generous tip. Very good prices--that pushed this up to 5 stars for me. This for me personally is a new place, rather than a lifelong memory. But old friends saw my check-in and I got a dozen comments about trying this place for years and years, with parents, grandparents, now kids of their own, one guy said it was his all-time favorite. They have a very particular approach to making pizza, especially the crust. It's awesome. I'll definitely be back when a 2+-hour round trip for pizza makes sense. read more

Is there any way to add more stars? No? I can't say enough good things about the pizza at Cloverleaf. I've driven by many times wondering if I should stop and give them a try. I am so glad my friend introduced me to their pizza. Why did I wait so long! For me, it's the sauce. Just the right amount of garlic. I'm not a huge fan of cracker thing crust but that opinion flew out the window when a beautiful, thin personal pizza was placed in front of me. It did not last long. The perfect amount of cheese and black olives...and that sauce... I have been thinking about that pizza for days now. I will go back very soon because it was just as good as their billboard brag. They even have an adult beverage section and a family room in the back. I've only been to the Leaf once since my mother in law passed because she (Hiroko) made the best dough ever. I ordered what I used to get back then. Pepperoni, sausage and black olives. I have to say the taste and flavors were pretty much spot on. It brought back a flood of memories. If you've never been give it a shot. It's not like other pizza places because they don't use a conveyor oven it's old school. So don't expect your pie in 13 minutes. My dad grew up in Tacoma going to this place and he just moved back to the area from California. He was super excited to take me and my family here. As soon as we walked into the family side (it was around 8:20 pm) we were greeted by a super pissed off, rude server named Ari who looked like she was coming down off a crack binge. She started yelling "you can't eat here we are closed" and the area was filled with families. She said the other side is open so we started walking over and then she yelled "NO KIDS OVER THERE!! You can order a pizza at the bar and leave I am locking the door". I was honestly legitimately confused at first because she was so frantic that she was hard to understand. I told my dad that I thought it was open until 9 pm. Ari yelled "you need to go on the website or go look at the door!" I ignored her and told my dad that I was on Google and she again interjected into our conversation and I finally told her that I was talking to my dad not her. Mind you my 5 and 9 year old kids are scared at this point due to this chicks ballistic behavior. Ari needs to leave the service industry and go work in a basement away from the general public. It's sad that my dad loves this place so much, hopefully they get some better service so it doesn't go into the ground.
