My read is that management looked at the kitchen, waitstaff, cooks, dining room, and cigar lounge, decided they were all underperforming assets, and started deleting anything that resembled hospitality until only the gaming revenue was left standing. What used to feel like a neighborhood bar with food now feels like a cost-cutting exercise masquerading as a business model. The operating philosophy now seems painfully obvious: food was treated as a margin leak, customer experience was treated as overhead, and the solution was to cut labor, kill the kitchen, close the seating, simplify the product, and let the machines do the rest. Maybe that cleans up the spreadsheet. From the customer side, it reads less like a turnaround than a slow-motion surrender. What makes it even more shortsighted is that this does not look like a business with any real succession plan. The room feels heavily dependent on an older regular base, and that may keep the lights on today, but it is not a strategy for tomorrow. A business cannot live forever off the same aging customer pool and call that vision. At some point, management has to ask the obvious question: what happens when that crowd starts aging out and the next generation has never been given a reason to care? And that is where this place feels especially asleep at the wheel. There is little visible effort to promote the bar, modernize the image, create buzz, or give the public any compelling reason to stop in. You are sitting right on Charleston, with 40,000-plus cars a day passing by, and somehow the message to the public still seems to be: "You figure out why you should come here." No. That is management's job. Give people a reason to want to be there. Advertise what you have. Market a concept. Make an effort. Social Media is free! The most frustrating part is that the fix is not even complicated. Plenty of successful local bars understand that a kitchen does not have to be a liability if it is structured correctly. Lease the kitchen to a capable food operator from the Vegas scene, bring in someone who actually knows how to create demand, and suddenly you have energy, traffic, food, and a reason for people to come in beyond just feeding the gaming floor. It would not take much. That is why the current version feels so cynical: not because the problems are unsolvable, but because management seems content to coast on minimum effort in a maximum-visibility location. Great for reducing overhead, perhaps. Not exactly inspiring for anyone looking for a bar that still acts like it wants to exist in the future. I genuinely want the best for Skinny Dugans, and for the staff who are still there. The bartenders, in particular, are excellent, and they deserve better than to be left carrying the weight of a stripped-down concept. I sincerely hope this is not the final nail in the coffin. But the reality is simple: without a kitchen, this place loses a major reason for people to choose it over other local bars. And for me, that means I will likely spend my money at an establishment that still offers both gaming and a kitchen, instead of one that seems to be retreating from half of its own identity.

Since they are using the Gamblers Bonus players club there are some decent bonuses and promotions available as well. Overall I would recommend and will visit again but gamble sparingly.

The vibe/aesthetic is very cabin lodge in the mountains, bears, very vintage games, taxidermy mounts on the walls, very on brand. Check-in was a really easy process, the front desk employees were incredibly kind and very helpful. I really appreciate that they were able to hold my bags for me until check-in. The retreat has a bar, a restaurant, and a café. The only thing that I did not do was go in the café. The bar was pretty busy when we were there in the evening, the employees seemed a little bit overwhelmed, but did the best they could with how many people were there. There are gorgeous views of the mountains from the bar in the daytime. You can order food from the bar, if the restaurant is too busy. My friend had dinner at the bar she got a fettuccine Alfredo that she said was really good. We had breakfast there the next day and had the kindest waitress, and she just had such a beautiful energy to her. And the portions are huge and really good. I did scrambled eggs with breakfast potatoes, fruit, and tea, Absolutely perfect. There are no elevators at the hotel, so if you are staying on the top floor, just know that you have to bring everything upstairs and there's quite a few stairs you have to take. (Even if you're staying on the first floor, you still have to take one flight of stairs.) We did the balcony double queen room, it's a pretty decent size though the ceiling is slanted so it's not as tall in some places, but it had a nice charm to it. The balcony sits two people and has a gorgeous view from the front of the mountains. I absolutely loved waking up and going out there. The room was definitely outdated, the beds were alright, more on the soft firm side, sheets were clean, two pillows per bed. Interesting that there was no phone in the room if we needed to call the front desk or housekeeping for anything. One thing I will say that I was pretty shocked by is how dirty the floors were in the room. My feet were completely black, so next time I stay up there I know to bring slippers or slides. The shower was pretty interesting, it took quite a bit for the hot water to turn on and the knob turned a whole 360 and would shut off if you accidentally went back to the beginning from the other direction, But once it was hot, it was really hot! The tub/shower was definitely a little worn down. There is a timed heat light in the bathroom in case you get cold. The bathroom had the typical towels, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, body wash, soap, bars, toilet paper, and tissues. The room had a coffee machine with coffee packets, cups, etc. and an ice bucket. And a mini fridge in the cabinet under the TV. The nightstand has outlets on the side of it. There were two chairs in the room, the nightstand, the dresser, and then there was another mini dresser and a mini closet and a full length mirror. The TV does have a few stations and then you can log into Netflix from what I saw on the TV. There is free Wi-Fi but they give you a little piece of paper with a code and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't and then you have to go back to the front desk because they aren't sure which ones work. My experience at the retreat was very lovely, I was there for a wellness event and it was absolutely beautiful and I hope they continue to have events like that up there more often. I love the lobby and the aesthetics. There's a lot of character throughout the first floor of the hotel, like they even have trees growing from in the center in the ballroom. But as a Vegas local that grew up in the hotels, I do have a pretty high standard for cleanliness in hotel rooms and the room seemed clean on the surface, but wasn't as clean as I thought it was at first. So I know for next time to be more aware of that from the beginning.
