I made a reservation at Comet Bowling Alley for a social outing with a group of neurodivergent teens. The woman at the front desk was absolutely amazing--friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Unfortunately, our experience with the food-service staff was very disappointing. Our food arrived at very different times, and one burger took more than an hour to come out, even though another burger order placed after ours was served first. I also had a large party order, and the employee who took it assured me that everything had been included. After waiting about 45 minutes, I checked on the order only to find out it had not been entered correctly. I then had to place a new order and wait again. For hungry kids, especially during a planned group outing, this was frustrating for everyone. Although we visited on a Friday, the bowling alley was not especially busy, and there appeared to be several staff members available. This was especially disappointing because we have been coming here for years and have never had a problem before. Many of our students view Comet as a safe, lower-stress space compared with other bowling alleys. I hope the food-service process can be improved, because we would love to continue bringing groups here. Get here early on a Tuesday night! They have $2 bowling and it's fun. The lanes are well oiled so real bowlers can really work on their craft. The shoes are newer if you need to rent, and the balls are in good shape. My knock is that we had a big party and we could only get 2 lanes with 6 each. Also, they close at 11 pm. Literally the lanes shut off at 10:59:59 no mater if you paid! That was a bummer because we were having a good time. If I could give a zero, I would. Went on a Friday afternoon after work with my wife, to end the work week and begin our weekend. Mind you on Wednesday, I took my team for a team builder and spent $925. On this day we experienced the worst customer service, I have ever received. During our third game, 4 frame, the ball strings got tied up, when trying to reset the pins. This location doesn't use free flowing pins, the pins are tethered to a string. It took approximately 10 minutes to get them untangled. While waiting I asked the bartender if she could help, because I saw her just 2 days earlier and she was friendly. She informed me to talk to the person at the front desk. Went to the front desk and informed the person of our plight, with the delay. She informed me that she will send a manager to our lane. We continued to wait and I noticed that the person at the front desk was talking to another person, as they looked in our direction. I figured that the young lady was explaining our situation. After they finished, no one ever came over to talk to us. We waited a couple of minutes, as they were still untangling the lines. The game finally was able to resume and I happen to see the person who the front desk was talking too. I approached her to ask if she was the manager, she state she was, so I preceded to explain our issue and seeing if there were any compensation for the faulty equipment. She replied "That is the disadvantage for have strings on bowling pins" as if I put the strings on the bowling pins. I went on to inform that I was here just 2 days ago and spent $925. She stated, "Glad to came out". I was floored. Thinking to myself "are you serious". I asked her if she was going to compensate, she stated "No, sorry". After we finished our game, the mood totally blown, we dropped off our shoes and I decided that her response, did not sit right with me. Politely, I spoke to the young lady, who stated she was the manager earlier, why do you feel that there is nothing you can do? She responded "Because you finished your game and you didn't ask to be moved, there is anything I could do. We don't give refunds? I replied "It is not about the money, but to say there isn't anything you could do, is not the right way to deliver customer service" I went on to even try and give her some advice, "You could have suggested, sir we can't give you a refund but if you come back next Friday, we will give you 2 games, for your inconvenience. It is only $3 per game". She replied, "This conversation is making me uncomfortable". In shock I replied, "What are you talking about". My wife replied "What do you mean, you are getting uncomfortable? We are just talking about our displeasure" She begin to step back and started calling other team members over. We were totally floored by this act of being afraid of two people having a conversation with her. I have never been one to play the race card, but I believe she was scared of me being a black man expressing my displeasure in her not giving great customer service. There was one team member, a black female, did not make the matter any better by coming over stating "You never have to come here and spend your money again". This was the worst Customer No service, I have ever been a part of. Comet Decatur, you best believe, I will not use your location for anymore team builders and I will never set foot in your establishment again. I will continue to let my organization and friends know, you hire people that don't know how to take care of small issues and how to talk to customers. It is called Customer Service 101. UPDATE.... On Sunday 3/16 me and a group visited Stars and Strikes on Mountain Industrial in Stone Mountain, 10 minutes from Comet. This was a much busier location but everyone from the Shoe counter, the Bartender, those working the bowling lanes, even the iRobot that delivered the food, were great. This type of customer service is what I expected from my local bowling center (Comet). Stars and Strikes thank you for showing me I have a choice. My wife and I visited The Comet for her former coworker's birthday outing. The Atmosphere: The Comet definitely has an older, classic feel to it. The signs and some furniture looked from the 50's. Even the music was tunes from the 70's and 80's. The Service: Not going to lie, I was pretty disappointed by the service here. I ordered a bucket of Modelo for $16 (wanted Corona, but they were sold out). Obviously with Modelo, we'd want some limes, so when I went to ask another bartender for some, she kind of had an attitude and when I told her "Thank You", she didn't say anything. Just sort of slid the limes in a cup and kept moving. At first, I thought they intended for their service to match their decor of the 50's by being racist towards people of color, but turns out, this lady was just sort of rude to everyone to several people in our group regardless of color. This was a turnoff as we were buying several drinks here. The Bowling: Bowling was typical. The only thing that I didn't like were how badly chipped and beaten the bowling balls were. They could definitely use an upgrade on new balls, because they've seen better days. Luckily, they weren't bad enough to keep me from winning both games my group played. Overall, this place is okay. Last night was our last night of bowling league at the Comet. The Fooood: I ordered the chicken tenders and fries, every week. I want to say it's $11 and a great value. The tenders are full strips of chicken not that ground chicken product. They have a light crisp to them, definitely more chicken than breading. I got mine with honey mustard and it was really good, not sure if they make it in house or not. But the key to a good chicken finger basket is the fries. These fries are really good. They taste and look like strips of fried potatoes. Again not that mushed and reformed product, it had a much fresher taste to it. Have you been to a bowling alley where you have actually enjoyed the food?! I definitely started looking forward to my next chicken finger basket each Monday night. Sorry, no photos, I consistently devoured it before I thought to get a pic. Parking is free. We had a blast bowling here! The only downside was a couple of glitchy nights on the lanes. The Comet Pub & Lanes is housed in the sprawling Suburban Plaza shopping center. What looked like the main entrance was facing Church Street, but it appears as though you're going into a bunch of dental offices. There's also a door in the back of the shopping center and a discreet one near the Half Price Books. There was a kickass summer special going on: three games including shoe rental, $7 per person. It's Sunday through Thursday only, before 5 PM. Then it's $10 after 5 PM. Sweet! We didn't try any food or drinks, but since the Comet is owned by the Twain's team, the grub is probably pretty similar. This is an old alley, and it shows. The touchscreens were very sleek and modern, but the system went down a few times during our games, trapping our balls and not resetting pins, and we had to get help. And the computer ended our final game before the last player could finish the frame. The bowling balls were a little worn but fine, and the shoes were in good condition, seemingly new. Bathrooms were clean. Darts and shuffleboard were available if you want to play them. The music changed from 60s classics to 2000s alt-rock which was weird. I thought the 60s tunes went better with Comet's retro theme. The service was not the best. You pay at the end but are supposed to pay your server. We apparently had some dude who never talked to us even though he was waiting on the family in the neighboring lane. The shoe lady guided us to the bar where a bartender rang us up. I've been here twice in the past month or so, both times with groups of 6-8 people. I'll be back, as I've had a really good experience both times. However, see below for some tips and which bartender to avoid. Pros: -Great selection of bowling balls with a variety of weights. Sometimes I have a tough time finding a ball that will accommodate the size of my hands, but not here; there's plenty of choices -Reasonably priced drinks with a good selection of spirits as well as a decent amount of unique beers on time -Good food. I've had a couple of the sandwiches, fries, and the pizzas, and have not been disappointed -Water available for you to grab when you need it, so you don't have to wait for someone to serve you -Pretty friendly staff, usually very helpful (with the exception listed first below). The first time I visited, we had a pizza come out incorrectly, and they made us a new one and let us keep the old one Cons: -One of the bartenders is super impatient / rude. This most recent time I went, I was grabbing drinks for my wife and I. I love that they have such a variety of beers, and my wife wanted an IPA. On this visit, the only sure shot IPA I recognized was a Sierra Nevada; the rest of the beers had the name of the brewery, the beer, and the ABV. I asked the woman, "Hi, what IPAs do you have on tap?" And she abruptly said, "They're all up there behind me" and walked away. Now, it's not uncommon for businesses to put the style of beer on the board along with the other info, but this just wasn't there. One of the other bartenders overheard this reaction and was much more friendly, saying, "Yeah, it'll say 'IPA' up there if it's an IPA." I said, "I must be missing something then, because 'IPA' is nowhere on that board." He then turned around and was surprised, and maybe just a touch embarrassed, apologized, and explained to me in detail 3-4 of the options that were IPAs. Great save by this guy, terrible initial experience with the other bartender. I tipped him $5, and hope that they don't tip share... -3 of the lanes I've bowled on have issues scoring at times. 2 of those were pretty good most of the time, but 1 was absolutely terrible, seemingly scoring each frame randomly. The ones that were good sometimes didn't register when there was a pin behind another pin, which is only an issue if you actually know what you're doing -The parking lot isn't huge; it seems to only be a problem on super busy nights (weekends) Other info: -At 9pm on the nights I've been there, the bowling alley turns to adults only. Great if you're an adult, not so great if you're finishing up a game of bowling with your kids. I've been coming here for years and love the classic bowling alley and pub food vibe. The food is great and i always make friends with other bowlers. Biggest turn off of this place is that when I went to close out my tab, I noticed it was more than I realized it would be, and asked the bartender, with the sideburns and hat, if there was an auto-gratuity on this. He looked at me in the face and said no there isn't. But then I looked at the itemized receipt and there was an 18% gratuity on it. I always tip my bartenders at least 20% and will continue to do so, but to lie and say there is no auto-gratuity on the tab, when there clearly is, is unethical and theft. Not to mention, this bartender (who has served me at least 3 times over the last few years) ALWAYS tries to tell me I have a fake ID. I even ordered from another bartender one time and added some food/drinks to my tab (no problem at all) and this guy with the sideburns came SPRINTING over to my lane to specifically look at my ID again, and he didn't even serve me. I'm 26 years old. I have no problems anywhere else showing my ID- but this specific bartender will try and deny me almost every time claiming my ID is fake. I don't know what his deal is. But lying about auto-grat and then also harassing me every time I try and order a drink is really starting to rub me the wrong way. read more

The Comet is not the worst bowling alley I've ever been to, but it's definitely not the best. The service is a little slow, and often the bar is unmanned. Often you will get a rude server who isn't really thrilled to be there. It's fairly clean, and is not very grungy looking, so that's a plus. Also, the food is pretty decent. All you will get is greasy pub food, but what else would you except at a bowling alley? I will say that the prices are decent, especially for the Atlanta area where everything is expensive, and there are usually plenty of lanes without a super long wait. It's a little hidden, so when you go you must go down this hallway to get there. They have a lot of specials on different days, so check out before you go what drinks or deals they have! read more

That was a lot of fun. The old Suburban lanes have had something of a facelift--maybe even a revival. And people seem to be liking it, because the place was full. You know, parts of the place seem old, dated, but that gives The Comet some character, and that's okay. A little retro that's genuinely retro is good. But there's new score-keeping technology on the bowling lanes, which are really easy to use. And the shoes and bowling balls are generally in good nick, even if some scarring is evident on the older balls. And the place itself is vey kid friendly, making it easy for the littlest of tykes to roll a ball down a lane an knock a few pins down. But the bar and the restaurant are what really knock this review right up into four-star territory. The pizza my fiancée had was really good. My patty melt was delicious and too big to finish. Bar service was quick and easy. And the kitchen takes their time to make sure they get things right. And they're succeeding. read more

AAAAAND 1.5 hour wait to get a lane on a Tuesday. Been here a few times and it's definitely gone down since opening. They don't even have a cocktail menu anymore - it's been discontinued. Deja vu. I came here years ago with friends back when it was Suburban Lanes. The recent upgrades make Comet Pub and Lanes feel familiar but more inviting. The MARTA train fiberglass seating has been replaced by solid wood benches that fit 3-4 comfortably. Flat screens are mounted above each lane. To the amusement of our children, one screen trash-talked our bowling skills with sayings like, "next time open your eyes." The darts and shuffleboard courts are fun additions too. We didn't experience the lane delays mentioned in other reviews, though at one point we noticed a faint burning odor near the ball return machine. We flagged down our server and when he brushed it off like no big deal, we kept bowling. A dining table in the center of the lane made it easy to spread out and eat. We shared Chicken Tenders, House Fries (with roasted garlic aioli, ketchup & beer queso dip) and a 10" Extra Cheese Pizza; everything was tasty. At 10PM, the lanes turn 21+ so when the announcement came over the PA we had to leave. Our 1 1/2 hour of bowling, shoe rentals, bites and sips for two adults and two children set us back $105. Next time we'll come during off-hours for the best rate. Shoe rentals are a flat $4 per person but prices vary per hour per lane (PHPL): Tuesday - Friday until 5PM: $15 PHPL Sunday - Thursday from 5PM until close: $20 PHPL Saturday & Sunday until 5PM: $20 PHPL Friday - Saturday from 5PM until close: $30 PHPL I'll give Comet Pub and Lanes 4 stars for upgrading the tired alley that was here years ago. I've been to the Comet Pub & Lanes and couple of times, and I've really enjoyed myself. It's a mix of grown up and family environment that works. Service is a bit weird here. I've only been on Saturday nights, and it seems as though they don't have enough people working. The people who work the lane reservation counter could not care less about your experience. Most of them don't make eye contact just in case you ask them for something or mention a problem with the lanes. The service at the bar has been the best for me - whether sitting and enjoying food while waiting for our lane or walking up to place an order. The bar service can be slow (because of understaffing), but you can tell that they are trying and they don't ignore you. The lane machine is easy to operate, and there are plenty of balls if you don't have your own. Also, the shoes are not ugly at all. Whoever decided on the shoe style - two thumbs up! The lanes themselves are quirky. They seem to have system issues, i.e. you hit 9 pins, and the machine removes all the pins, including the 1 that's left. But you still have to roll a ball down the lane for the computer to give you a spare. This is fine in a non-competitive setting, but I can see it being a major problem for a league tournament. And although I've visited before the Kids Curfew goes into effect, I do enjoy that kids have to be out by 10pm. As an adult, I don't like kids around when I'm drinking. The Comet Pub & Lanes is owned and operated by the family who owns Twain's and is located in the same building where Suburban Plaza used to be. Both make this a winner in the heart of anyone who's lived in or near Decatur in the last 10 years. The bowling alley has been open less than a year and really hasn't gotten much accolade, but I think it deserves some. The ambiance is really reminiscent of the bowling alleys we spent time at when we were children, with very little flashy technology. There's none of the Painted Pin pretentiousness; it's just good, old fashioned fun with a little Decatur spin. (On a Saturday night they were playing great hip hop and R&B, including OutKast and Notorious B.I.G.) The menu is a bit of a miss for me; it's standard bar food with a selection of appetizers, pizzas, sandwiches, etc. It just didn't really have anything too interesting or unique on it. I ordered a burger and it was A-OK but nothing to write home about. That said, there is an excellent beer list with both bottles and drafts as well as a full bar. This place is a l of fun for a date night with friends. You pay per hour and then per 15-30 minutes. I went on a weeknight and it was pretty busy. Our server was great! He provided food and drink commendations. I ordered chicken tenders with fries. This is something that I would never order, but am so happy I did. It as so delish and the portion was huge! My beer was nice and cold. Bowling was fun too. The shoes smell so new! I did awesome and loved the snarky comments given to you when you have a gutter bowl. Quite a while ago, I wound up with 3 friends on a team in a junior bowling league in ~ 10th grade. This was at the Suburban Lanes near Decatur. Fast forward to 2016. The same bowling alley was being refurbished/re-purposed as the Comet. Their opening got delayed, but I had intended to ask the 2 remaining local guys who were in the team to see if they wanted to check it out. Sadly, one of them died in the fall before we could stop in. Later, this past February, the other guy + some mutual high school friends (one visiting from Europe now) wanted to meet up. So we ended up at the Comet. I wanted to like this place. We stopped in on a Saturday around 6:30 p.m. There was 'up to a 90-minute wait' for lanes! Wow. We got on the list and hung out eating dinner. The food was pretty standard pub-fare, though it appeared they had a semi-extensive beer selection. Thankfully, a lane opened up and we were able to bowl. Maybe it was just our lane but there seemed to be frequent issues with the ball getting stuck. Also, you do not bowl by the game but by time (that is also how you are charged, apparently). So waiting on ball-returns was costing money... They did credit us some time back, but I'd rather just be allowed to bowl a complete game on my own schedule. At the end of the evening, the total for our food and bowling (for 4) came to ~ $150! I was unpleasantly surprised at the total. I'm certain that I could visit a bar and a bowling alley separately for much less than that. The only other knock was that the place seemed to really have an over-representation of hipsters. It got to be sort of a running joke. I would be very unlikely to return here for bowling, and the food isn't a draw on its own. Not recommended. read more

This place is so incredibly mismanaged it is almost laughable. We came in on a Saturday with friends, we were told there was a two hour wait.... okay. So we put our name down and headed to the bar. For the first hour we were here at least 7 lanes sat open with no one on them. Frustrating.... we asked what was going on. The manager with the mans haircut explained they hold lanes for reservations for an hour. Seems like a terrible business model. So we wait again for another hour. We ask for an up date and the heavy black woman tells us that there are 6 people in front of us.... how is that possible... it's been two hours and the people next to us came in at the same time. The manager who we had previously spoke with than says that she called us via phone and called our name over the loud speaker. This was a flat out lie. So frustrated we left this place without bowling. And went to dinner. The most amusing part of this utter waste of time was the bowling ally calling us while at dinner to tell us our lane was open. So I guess if you are cool with offensively rude service and waiting 4 hours for a lane this is the place for you. I on the other hand will not be back!!! I added the snap of when the bowling ally called us..... we arrived at 6pm they called at 10.......this was after them manager lied to our face about calling us. I am still a bit in shock as to how awful this experience was. We love Twain's and go weekly, but after this I don't know if I can support this owner. read more
