So after a day of snowboarding at Watervalley Mountains in NH and driving back to Boston we stopped at "The Common Man Restaurant" based on the positive reviews on yelp. After all the place does have 23 4 star reviews. Boy was I wrong! The atmosphere was GREAT but that's the only positive thing I have to say. The waiter was an older lady and was very nice but she started the night off mixing up my salad order with my friends. So now I'm eating a salad I didn't order. No big deal. It's just a salad. Next up, we ordered 2 sirloin steaks with different sides. Once again I didn't get the correct side dish. After mentioning it to the waiter she apologized. Now one would think she'd put an express order in for it. WRONG. After 5 minutes she returns and says its going to be a bit longer. Now if you have ever ate a steak time is of the essence. Anyways. 10....15....20 minutes past! No checking in on us. No refilling our empty soda dishes. 30 minutes past! SHE TOTALLY FORGOT! To make matters worst, she doesn't even mention the side dish when she returns. UMMMMM Did you forget you just served me JUST A STEAK! No sides?!?! Amazing. I'm amazed and will be left wondering what happened to that side dish. So many questions unanswered. Was my order EVER put in? Did she not return because she knew she forgot? Did she not care? We ate here last night, our first night here in the area since last summer. The service was pleasant as we were seated quickly and our waitress was attentive. The mussels were excellent as was my daughter's mac and cheese. My other daughter's pizza and my husband's trout was okay. It's a dish more suited for my parents who are on a sodium and fat diet. My order of the pasta primavera was a big disappointment. The veggies were undercooked and gritty. The pasta was cut into 3 inch lengths, almost as long as the veggies. The sauce was flavorless. I've usually had good experiences at the CM restaurants around NH, but a recent trip to Ashland changed all that. It was a family lunch outing that turned into the worst experience I can ever recall. Everyone's orders were somehow messed up (missing items, main courses coming before apps, drinks not showing up, etc...). The waitress was just horrible, and as the mistakes started piling up she all but abandoned waiting on us. We had to walk around to find the manager, who ended up being our server. Even when we tried to leave, our leftovers being boxed up could not be found. The manager was very nice, and did the right thing by not charging us, but I will never stop here again. read more

Overall we had a nice evening but felt rushed by our waitress at the beginning. It was 6:50 when we arrived, and they are open until 9 on Sunday night, so not sure why the pushiness. Once our food came, she was non existent. A table that arrived 20 minutes after us left before us because it took 15 minutes of attention being given only to that other table (we were the only two tables in the restaurant), to pay our bill. The Hot & Dirty Martini was really delicious. The only downside to it was that it's described as having a Celery Salt rim and Blue Cheese Stuffed Olives, but it came with neither of those things. The Perfect Storm drink was also really delicious. Very sweet and flavorful. We ordered the Stuffed Chicken, which was amazing and cooked perfectly, and the Rack of Lamb, which for $27 was over-cooked, fatty, and lacked flavor. Would not order that again. As other reviewers have said, the complimentary cheese & crackers is nice and we really enjoyed the white chocolate at the end of the meal. Overall we enjoyed our dinner, mostly because we were celebrating an anniversary and tried as best we could to make light of the level of service. Will try this location again sometime and see if it's any better the 2nd time around. 3-stars because of the delicious food and drinks (minus the lamb), and the atmosphere. After a 9 hour hike on Mt. Lafayette, this place answered my prayers. I was torn between a lot of the menu items but my best friend ordered the Smokehouse Burger and the waiter offered sweet potato fries which is my weakness so I went ahead and ordered the same. I was so hungry I considered an app but this burger was the perfect size! I asked for a side of jalapenos which made it even better. We walked in the 1st floor on a Saturday evening and were so happy to see it wasn't packed however maybe because we actually looked like we had just finished a hike, the hostess kind of suggested we eat upstairs in the lounge area/self seating. I didn't see this place as dressy or upscale other than a bar to eat so I may be wrong but that was a little weird. However, the lounge area bartender/our waiter was great and attentive and food came out quick! I would definitely go back for this burger and try other menu items :) read more

I prefer to go to the Common Man in Ashland for a drink and their music. I find the food too heavy and salty. The last time I had dinner there it was interesting that the burger my friend ordered took longer than any one else's entree. The waitress actually came up and told us that the burger was still frozen and the cook was working on it. They have quirky, inconsistent service, but for me that is part of the charm of the place. The Common Man doesn't pretend to be anything fancy so I don't mind that at all. What I have trouble with is the quality of the food. read more

I've been coming here since I was a kid when I'm up to ski in the area. I'll also drop in with family or friends on the way back to MA from other northern adventures. I love the Common Man! Relaxing on the sofas with friends, great food and beer, and often live music is an awesome way to end a day. Food was okay but waitress in training and her counter-part were far from great. I got the wrong drink, my other half order a Caesar with steak tips and brought out during the apps without the steak. This was her meal. Two appetizer orders of wings came with no dipping sauce I asked three times before we got one little cup for two different orders. I could go on and on but I think the problem is the lack of communication with the trainer and trainee they were both just off. Also we were a party of 8 and they had other tables maybe cut back on the amount of parties someone training has and they could learn a little better. I've been eating here for years, but was moved finally to Yelp about the original C-man because we had a very nice dinner there last night. Their latest menu iteration features a pan-fried Parmesan (and panko, I think) encrusted chicken breast, which was very tasty -- topped with spinach, arugula, red onion and tomato tossed in a light citrus vinaigrette. I might have liked to see that salad intentionally wilted just a touch -- parts of it were cold, as you'd expect a salad to be, and parts were warm/slightly wilted, because it was piled on top of the chicken. Really tasty, though, and just the right portion size & combination of flavors. J. had the Ahi Tuna which she enjoyed, but she was sad to see the departure from the dessert menu of the "battling" brownies. I'm happy that the mud pie is still there. Of course, we didn't really have room for dessert -- but have enjoyed many desserts there in the past. The drink menu keeps growing and growing -- I had an Irish whiskey fizz drink that was nice enough. Free cheese and crackers always appreciated. Good service. Found a seat, waitress came over 5 minutes later & took our drink order then disappeared for 10 minutes after I asked for a kids menu. Finally ordered, got a big basket of fresh bread which my daughter liked, I ate my side salad which was decent. My blackened tuna, baked potato & veggies came out. Blackened tuna couldn't have been worse, it was over cooked when it should have been rare. It was so overcooked that it was hard so I could only eat the inside layer of the fish. It had way too much blackening seasoning. The baked potato was really good, the veggies were a mush of overcooked squash & carrots. My daughter had pasta with butter which she said was "ok". In hindsight I should have ordered something more basic, maybe it would been cooked better...I would not eat there again. read more

This is my first review on Yelp and I am proud to give it to the Common Man Restaurant. It is a little overdue since I went there for New Years with my family, but it was the best New Years I ever had because of the Common Man's excellent food and service. We did have to wait but it wasn't long considering it was New Years, and we waited in a beautiful lounge with the largest fire place I have ever seen. Our server was very friendly and funny and knew the menu front and back. He was always around to refill our drinks and keep us entertained. I can't describe to you in words how great the food is. I got the baked stuff shrimp and was stuffed for 2 days! It was perfectly baked with the right amount of butter glazed over. I don't remember what the rest of my family got but we all ordered something different, and there were no complaints around the dinner table. The atmosphere was so warm and cozy, perfect for a New Years Dinner. The desserts were mouthwatering. I don't remember what it was called but something with cookie dough tasted like heaven. It was one of the best dinners and restaurants I have ever been too, and I will be going back next time I'm in New Hampshire! read more

We are local and we go to this restaurant all the time, however tonight was the most disappointing meal I've had. First, our waiter took 40 minutes after serving our drinks to take our order. When he finally did, he never told us the specials. We waited another 30 minutes for our food, which was only appetizers, and they arrived at our table cold. As mentioned above, we have attended this restaurant on multiple occasions and frequently order nachos with chicken. What we received seemed like nachos with pork on a much smaller plate, so when we asked the waiter why the dish was much smaller than usual and if it was pork on our plate our waiter responded with, "that's above my pay grade", took the plate, quickly returned and said "it's shredded chicken". After testing the meat, we knew it was not a shredded version of the chicken we had 8 days before (the last time we ordered this dish at this very restaurant). 8 days previous, we had nachos with chunks of chicken breast on a very large plate. Tonight, however, we received what they called "shredded chicken thigh" on a small plate. The manager had tried to tell us the meal had "always been this way" when that was very obviously not the case. Additionally, It took 20 minutes for our waiter to refill a beer, our chicken tenders were very dry and had very little sauce on them. Meal was a total disappointment, service was awful. If we get this waiter again we will no longer be eating at this restaurant. read more

This place is solid and classically "New Hampshire" - great service, neat atmosphere, reliably above average food. I enjoy the seasonal menus (though wish they changed them up a bit more often), and have trouble picking from my "favorites" on the standard menu. This is an especially great spot in the warmer months when you can eat on their patio or deck. Oh, and unlimited cheese and crackers. Worth the trip. read more

My husband and I were looking for a casual night out and decided to head to this old standby in the Squam Lakes area. It did not disappoint. This is not a pretentious place but the service is friendly, the menu is varied and the prices are very reasonable. Bonus was it was "Wine Down Wednesday" and all bottles of wine were half price. Great deal there. Split the mussels and it was more than enough for two. My husband got a steak but started with the corn and lobster soup. Soup had huge chunks of lobster--no skimping there. His steak was well prepared and the side of mashed potatoes was good. He is not a big veggie eater so they happily substituted the vegetable medley with the sliced tomatoes he requested. I had a pasta, peppers, sausage and chicken entree. It was very good but so enormous I could not even eat half of it. Nice problem to have. My family and I were vacationing around this area and when dinner time rolled around, we turned to siri to help us find a nearby resturaunt. When the common man came up, we decided to give it a try because of its four-star overall review. As we first walked in, we were greeted by the warming lodge-like atmosphere and extremelly friendly service. As soon as we were seated, a perky and friendly waitress emerged and greeted us. We were informed of the cheese and craker station (bonus!) and wine wednesday. My son could also order of of the adults menu, as half portions were available. We were brought two delicious types of bread; the typical dinner bread ( salty and flavorful) and a sweet bread that tasted alot like cake. I had ordered the uncommon salad and i apologize for my lack of discription, but it was simply too amazing to discribe. My son devoured his salmon and my wife also enjoyed the uncommon salad which had candied hazelnuts. An the very end the waitress brought over this amazing white chocolate. I highly recomend this. I had some escargot some lobster rangoon and the rueben panini and it was DELICIOUS! For dessert I had some White chocolate bread pudding that was the best thing I ever tasted! I also really liked our waitress because she showed us this really old book about everyday etiquette for men and it was pretty funny to see some of the rules that people obeyed back in the early 1900's. A magical dining experience from beginning to end.From the inspired beverages(both alcoholic and non) to the unexpectedly high end appetizers such as escargot and blue cheese nachos.I ordered the in house made veggie burger and my husband ordered the steak and cheese pannini.I LOVE the veggie burger that was flavorful with crisp edges.My hubby enjoyed the flavors of his pannini but said that there was not enough meat in it for him.For drinks I ordered the lemongrass tini & blueberry lemonaid(nonalcoholic) and my husband had the black barrel old fashioned, all three were very good.The decor is old timey and very relaxed.Upstairs there is a lounge area with little nooks and board games.Overall a lovely place to go and eat if you are in the area. read more

I'm a fan of all the Common Man restaurants, especially this one. The only thing preventing me from giving it 5 stars is the comfort factor. The other night my husband and I and another couple went for dinner and were seated in a booth, which is ordinarily prime seating. However, after being seated for 10 minutes we were all rather uncomfortable because the table just didn't seem large enough for all the plates and utensils. 4 cheese and cracker plates, coupled with the salad which came right away, 4 wine glasses and then the dinner plates.We were a little scrunched together in the seat, also. ( Let me add that we do not weigh 300 pounds each.) The booth we were seated in would be the typical 2 person booth and as I looked around, most of them had only 2 persons in them. Otherwise, it was a delightful experience and I still would patronize all of the CM restaurants. read more

A disappointing experience. We had been to Common Man restaurants before and had high expectations. The waiter seemed very inexperienced, but he was nice. It took forever for our drinks to arrive and then they were mediocre. The gin and tonic came without lime! The waiter forgot to refill our water glasses. He had to keep coming back to tell us the food was still being worked on. The swordfish entree was terrible. It was overcooked and cold at the same time. The little shrimps that came with it were ice cold, and the supposed grilled asparagus was cold and tough. The stuffed peppers's filling was mushy and the veggies in it indistinguishable. The only good thing we had was the apple tart. It really seemed like the chef and bartender were missing and the waiter had just started that day. read more
