I can get excited about a good restaurant experience once in a while. But it is a rare occasion that I am absolutely BLOWN AWAY. Location: Concord NH is a hidden gem. I was passing through on my way back to Boston from Burlington with my girlfriend and we needed a place to eat. After some brief searching on our phones, we decided this "Common Man" place looked like it had what we were looking for. Building: The building is old, but in a Historic and charming way. The place is well kept, and HUGE inside. Open space, huge ceilings, lofts, multiple floors. And despite its vast size, the decor made the place feel warm, intimate and cozy. There was no wait, but there was not an empty seat in the place. We walked in at the right time. Food: Glorious. Check out the menu, and you will see what I mean. Wonderful selection. I got the Portsmouth Pie. For the most part it is North Eastern comfort food, done classy. Steamed Muscles for an app. Wow. So good. Heaping, steamy portion. Desert you ask? I never order desert. But this time I did, and I do not regret it one bit. They have a pie-heavy desert menu, but other classics mixed in as well. I got fresh blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream. Holy. Moly. Bar: I didn't partake, but I caught a glimpse of it, and it is a BEAST. Next time I will be sure to scope it out. Price: Despite the quality and portions (awesome and ample), the price was still completely reasonable. I do not know how they stay open. They must rely on volume, as I said - full house. Service: Through the roof. This guy was the man. Polite. Came by frequently, but not TOO frequently (hate the stalker waiters...). He knew the menu in and out. This was the nicest guy in the world. We had a brief conversation around "check time". Genuine, friendly person. This was, from start to finish, easily one of the top 5 dining experiences of my life time. Sunday 1/25/2015 6pm for drinks and dinner on way back from ski - charmed. There's decent parking, although with the recent snow, there seemed to be only a couple of spots open. There are multiple ample rooms and you don't feel crammed at all, yet feel cozy. We got lucky and got a corner with 3 doublets of arm chairs, very comfortable. The prices are decent ($5.5 spiced grog, $17 cottage pie), and they have a gluten free menu. My only regret is that the cottage pie didn't have any corn or peas per the description: only a ton of beef at the bottom and mashed potatoes on top, with the side of that orange goo you see on other people's pictures (tasty), just not what I thought I ordered, and the waitress didn't mention anything. She was decent enough to split our checks ;) My friends took steak & mac & cheese, cottage pieces like me and bison burgers, no complaint. There's also free cheese and crackers while you wait. Next time, I'll try the gluten free white chocolate mousse...apparently a classic. read more

Ok. I love this place. The bar staff is amazing, I love the free munchies. Everything I've ordered from the bar is awesome. Granted, it is bar food, not gourmet, but every time I've been here that is exactly what I'm looking for. I've only eaten in the dining room once, but when I did it was awesome. One note of thanks. My grandmother passed away and nobody planned anything for after the funeral. Being from CT and having been to the Common Man before, my husband and I suggested everyone go to the Common Man after for a bite to eat. About 14 of us went over their unannounced. Once they heard why we were there they quickly offered to give us a private dining area along with dedicated staff. They were amazing. Still brings tears to my eyes thinking about it. I have been here 2x once for dinner with my husband and once with my mother for lunch.. The time I came with my husband we were not happy at all. The server was not good the appetizer came out at the same time as our food and everything was cold The other time I came with my mother the waitress was really nice my mother ordered a pot roast it came out burnt and fatty the waitress got the manager she got us a new one for my mother it was better.. Never took money off our bill (which is fine because she did get my mother a new pot roast) the food how ever took along time to come out again at the end i ordered a desert to bring home. I told my mother to stay in the restaurant and wait for the desert and I went to get my vehicle thinking she would be waiting for me at the front but after i went to get my vehicle my mother was not at the front so i went inside to see what was going on she was still waiting for the desert.. so we waited for another 10 mins or soand i finally went to our waitress after she walked past us and smiling at us and asked her where my desert was and her response "oh I forgot, i will go get it for you" She did apologize about forgetting it .. I always give a restaurant another chance and this is why i came back, But never again will i go there I WAS NOT HAPPY 1 BIT.. read more

Typically Common Man restaurants are darn good both food quality and service...this one had good food quality...once the food FINALLY got there. We arrived well after the dinner hours after picking up our daughters family at the bus station. The restaurant had only three or so tales occupied....took the staff over 20minutes to get us a table. The waitress took our order after getting us drinks which took another 10-15 minutes. The dinner finally came out (we ordered some appetizers, soup and a couple of children's items...) almost 45 minutes later. The table next to us had the same issue....manager was there...didn't check on us or the other table...didn't assist in the kitchen to expedite the two tables that had ordered (again out of a total of three tables occupied!). We finally got the food, kids and all famished. The food was good but don't think we'll be returning to this poor service location. Too bad. read more

Lousy take out service. We ordered 3 burgers to go after a long day of hiking. The order taker repeated the order the back correctly but still screwed it up. We placed our order 25 minutes before arrival and still waited 10 minutes for the food. The cashier had difficulty cashing me out. Perhaps the 2 warm root beers I purchased made it complicated. As we were driving away we realized we only were given 2 burgers. Thankfully, we were only charged for 2 meals. How does someone repeat an order back and still get it wrong? So much for technology. We were not going to wait another 30 minutes for the third burger so we continued our journey south. I called the manager and politely informed her that the staff needs more training. The manager was courteous and very apologetic. The burgers were overdone and the sweet potato fries were soggy. Save your money and skip this place. read more

My mom picked this restaurant for mother's day dinner. First off, let me say our waitress was great. She was attentive and helpful when questions were asked. She was misinformed about the vegetable of the day, and I wish she had said something before bringing my food out (I ordered double veg based on what I thought it was going to be, not what was brought out). The iced tea was great. Unfortunately it was the best part of my meal. There were four of us-we got french onion soup, caesar salad, 2 cod oscars, pot roast, and one special-the duck. We also had some crackers and cheese. It was mostly Ritz crackers (what is with this place and the abundance of Ritz?), with some kind of cream cheese spread and some other cottage cheese with relish or cocktail sauce? They were free, so I won't complain. The duck was very dry- we think it was probably cooked ahead of time and reheated? I love duck and after one bite of my mom's dish said no thank you to more. The salad was average, but did have large anchovies on top, which was nice. My bf at his pot roast before I could try it, but he said it was on par with pot roast he has had a Denny's, so there's that. My dad and I both got the cod- he actually loved his, and I did not like mine at all. Mine was rubbery and overcooked. I did get the sauce on the side, while his was drenched in it, so maybe that accounted for why his tasted better. The asparagus and lobster on top was good, but such a small amount, it didn't really make up for the price of the dish. Like I said earlier, I ordered double veg, which was supposed to be zucchini and summer squash. Instead it was winter squash, which was seasoned well but clearly loaded with sugar. I wanted a side vegetable, not a side dessert. Based on our meals, we opted not to have dessert there. Though my mom loved the white chocolate they gave out at the end. No one else at the table likes white chocolate, though. Overall the food was just okay. But what caused me to give it only 2 stars was the price. It was $130 (with tip) for four meals that weren't good. I wish I had spent my money elsewhere on a meal I enjoyed. I hope my mom wasn't as disappointed as I am. I took my 70-year old in-laws here for lunch and they noticed that they were by far the youngest people in the restaurant. This place seems to cater to the assisted living home set and the busses from them parked outside during lunch confirms it. Why is this an issue? The food is bland as cafeteria food. I've been more than a few times and have genuinely wanted it to be good, but it is what it is... a nostalgic romp for a set with withering tastebuds. My husband and I are coming up on our 1 year anniversary and we were trying to think of something to do. He thought of a picnic in the place we got married! I thought it would be cool to have the same food to eat for it, so people, not even a week out from our anniversary I emailed Trisha at Common Man Concord (our catering coordinator) and not only was she happy to help out, they had a gift card available for us as a gift from them for our anniversary, it was set to be mailed out today. How thoughtful and kind was it of them to remember our anniversary and to do something like that for us!? She is amazing and now thanks to her, our anniversary will be just as delicious as our wedding was!! While I've been to the Common Man in Merrimack only once, BF has been several times and has always spoken highly of his experiences. We were looking forward to our late lunch at the Common Man in Concord before seeing a film at Red River, but the service was lacking, to say the least. BF and I arrived just before 2PM and went upstairs to the lounge area, where we couldn't find a seat. As we circled the bar, a couple left, and we quickly grabbed their stools and proceeded to wait ... and wait. The bartender looked right at me at least twice, making eye contact, and ignored me. I exchanged a look with BF to communicate the message that if we weren't helped in the next minute, we were leaving. Finally, the bartender asked us what we wanted to drink, and gave us a beer and an iced tea before clearing the previous customers' dirty glasses. Slightly unprofessional, I thought. After another five minutes of perusing the menu we'd already examined cover to cover, I asked the bartender if we could order food. He said yes, but "just a minute while I get these drinks"--the drinks of a group that had just arrived. My expression must have been revealed my displeasure, because the other bartender quickly came over and said, "I'd be happy to take your orders. What can I get you?" We ordered a blue cheese burger and a bison cheeseburger, both of which were good (though I would have liked some toppings in addition to the cheese on my bison burger). While the second bartender was really friendly, neither bartender ever asked BF if he wanted another beer. I've never been at a bar where a bartender hasn't asked patrons if they want another drink (provided the patron isn't blotto), so I can only conclude that they wanted us out of there. We presented the Member Card and a credit card, gave a rather small (by our usually generous standards) tip, and left. read more

I'm used to The Common Man in Windham where I always feel like my money is well spent. Unfortunately, I did not feel that way after eating lunch at the concord location today. I was with my partner and two friends and we all found the portion sizes to be pathetic for the price. I ordered sweet potato fries with my veggie burger and there were 9 fries on the plate. We ordered the butternut squash ravioli appetizer and it arrived on a tiny plate with four half sized ravioli on it for $7.99... The server never paid attention to our drinks and seemed put off when I asked for refills of our iced tea. I asked for more stevia sweetener and never got any. The restaurant was not busy at all so that can't be used as an excuse. All in all a disappointing experience and we won't be back. $70.00 for lunch that didn't fill anyone up. read more

This location of the Common Man restaurant chain is their flagship. Located conveniently off of I-93 and close to the heart of downtown Concord, it follows the standard Common Man old sudo- New Hampshire rustic atmosphere. The restaurant is essentially a cartoon of itself. Crackers and cheese, tired sofas in the lounge, tv sets right out of the 1980's, recycled bar equipment complete the contrived atmosphere. Only the lack of a mechanical talking moose on the wall saves it from complete hokum. Wildly successful, the family of Common Man restaurants have become a fixture in the New Hampshire dinning scene for many years.They run the gamut from a country farmhouse to pretentious high cuisine. This one lingers in the culinary lower tier of the family. Serving both lunch and dinner, you will find it busy on most days. Wednesday dinner features Wine Down Wednesdays, offering all bottles of wine at half price and the place is generally packed. If getting a cheap buzz on is your idea of a good time, then belly up to the bar early to get the best seats. Wine aside, the food offerings are a different matter. Without going into a long list of failed meals that I have had there over the years, it suffices to say that most were forgettable or, true to the restaurants name, common. Most dishes are commissary designed and are shared throughout the chain. Portion control extends to the alcoholic beverages. It is difficult to argue with success. Alex Ray, owner and proprietor, is an original Horatio Alger story. Staring with nothing but true grit and determination, he has built a restaurant empire that appears to resonate with a lot of customers. The restaurant has out grown it's parking abilities. Valet parking is available on most nights. I suggest using it. This Common Man will appeal to those who have low expectations and are looking to a good time for not a lot of money. read more

I am usually very happy with the Concord Common Man but I was pretty disappointed tonight to pay over $17 dollars for the salmon salad which was basically a bowl of lettuce, 2 cherry tomatoes, maybe half a piece of bacon , one slice of Brussels sprout , and my piece of salmon. My companion asked for his burger medium rare and it was well done. It will be a while until we return. read more

My husband and I went to the Common Man in concord last night after we perused the menu online and found some items we were excited to try. So we show up around 5:15 and seat ourselves at a table in the bar. Our bartender/server was not even remotely friendly and actually seemed to be pretty unhappy with his lot in life. the bar was not overly busy yet our drinks took an unreasonably long time. We decided to try the pork belly and the almost escargot appetizers and then go from there after that to decide what we would have for dinner. Well dinner never happened because our appetizers took so long to appear. Our server came to tell us that the kitchen had not received the order ticket so they were going to "rush" out our food. However, he seemed almost smug about the whole thing so I think he may have forgotten to order the food pr something. Anyway, he grudgingly offered us a round of drinks on the house which we accepted. The apps finally came out and it was not worth the wait by any means. The mushroom caps were ok but not outstanding. The pork belly wasnt even crispy (I'm guessing this is because it was rushed out) and the slaw that went with it had too much honey in it according to my husband. So as soon as we finished our apps we asked for the check and got out of there as fast as we could. We ended up down the street at O steaks and seafood and had 2 awesome kobe steaks. Unfortunately this made us super late for our babysitter and we ended having to pay her extra for her trouble. So, needless to say we wont be back anytime soon. I give this restaurant 2 stars because my dirty martini was excellent and the only positive thing about our experience. read more

Met a friend here for lunch. She lives in New Hampshire and us in Maryland. This restaurant was her suggestion since it is right off the interstate. I was a little skeptical after reading some of the reviews. Glad we listened to her! I had one of the best lobster and corn chowders I have ever had and my friend had prime rib quiche! Ordered the largest prime rib to get a thick one and it was truly not much over half inch thick. The small one must be like a slice of roast beef. Grizzly too. Bad experience tonight. We went a few years ago and all I remember was sending back a rotten caesar salad. Tried again tonight and it was an abysmal experience. We waited for 10 minutes after we were seated for the waitress to show up. The waitress was waiting on 3 tables, two of which had finished their meals and truly acted as if she could not care less. She took our drink orders but ran off before we could order an appetizer. There was When we ordered our meals 25 minutes later, she literally ripped the menu out of my hand before I could finish ordering. A bread basket showed up about 35 minutes into our visit. She never came back to ask if our food was good or if we wanted refills or additional drinks. The food was literally disgusting. There was a revoting pile of summer squash on every plate, including the children's meals. The crab cakes were huge and inedible. The burgers were inedible and overcooked. My family likes to eat and every one of our plates was just picked at. Never again! Also, the nasty cheese bar! gross! I don't understand why there were so many people in there. read more

Up stairs pub and seating areas are great. Two bars, outdoor seats, and very good pizza-Mac n cheese with bacon is outstanding. Salads are also good. Only hiccup seems to be the service-each time we go, it's tough but the servers are generally polite, just stretched thin. Beer and mixed drinks are not cheap (at all) but great variety to choose from. Good crowd and parking can be a challenge because it's a popular place but is worth a stop in. read more

If you believe that butter makes everything better, then you must try the Almost Escargot appetizer. It's round little mushrooms baked in heart-stopping portions of butter and cheddar cheese, then sprinkled with tiny puff pastries. When you're done with the mushrooms, you can dip your bread in the remaining pools of melted garlicky herb butter. It's very bad for you. But it's sooo yummy. read more

The Common Man treated us right... My husband and I went to this Common Man Restaurant for the first time a week ago. We sat at the bar upstairs in the pub and ordered food from the dining and pub menu. My husbands bison meatloaf came out pretty quickly but he finished his meal and I was still waiting for my chicken sandwich! BUT.... no bad review because the bartender was over at the kitchen (they must have lost the ticket?) and brought my meal over when it was ready. AND... The manager was with him and they were VERY apologetic and paid our ENTIRE tab! It is not often that a restaurant will go Above and Beyond to fix a mistake! We will go back again as the food, service and drinks were good (just a little late). read more

Traveling for work over Mother's Day led me to dine at the bar here (since the dining room was all booked up). Common Man has the same ambiance as Cracker Barrel: creaky wooden floors, retail area, little games to play while you wait. Service was okay, but just okay. A big pet peeve of mine is when servers have personal conversations, complain about work, etc... right in front of customers. This happened non-stop around the bar. I had a glass of red wine and prime rib. Both were pretty solid. One appetizer (hot wings--breaded, which I don't love) and dinner for two (two drinks, two prime rib entrees) set us back $78 before tip. I left feeling satisfied, but not stuffed, which I suppose is just right. If I was heading through town again, I'd check out some other options before going back to Common Man. read more
