I took my son and his friend to the AJR concert a couple weeks ago. As others have mentioned, this place is just west of the Gateway and there is no parking next to the event center. The best parking is at the Gateway parking garages and you walk over. It's about a 2-3 minute walk. We did not run into any homeless people on our way there like others talked about in the past and that could be because there are a ton of newly developed housing complexes in the area. They do a general check at the gates, looking into bags, but that's about it. No security / metal detectors. It's low key security. The venue is a large warehouse with the stage on one side, a concession stand in the open when you walk in and another open section on the other side. There are plenty of bathroom stalls, which is great. There were two sides to this event because it was for all ages. The left side was for any age; while the right side was for 21 and older with an open bar. It's a large space with a massive ceiling fan. It wasn't turned on, but they did have the doors open on the sides which kept it cool enough in the place with all the people. It's standing only, on a concrete floor so wear comfortable shoes because after 2 hours of standing, it hurts. Also, if you are not tall, and I am not, good luck seeing the stage or get there well before the doors open to get close to the front stage. The right stage speaker wasn't working so for the first part of the concert and people there were complaining they couldn't hear the music. The sound quality was pretty good overall, at least on the left side. They had two large screens, one on each side, but only showed clips of upcoming events during the breaks. It never showed the stage while the concert was playing. That would have helped people in the back see the concert, but I also get why they didn't use them because it would take away from the stage lightshow... on a side note, AJR was a phenomenal show! After the concert ended, you could get in line to purchase memorabilia. That was a cluster f#$%, sorry, but wow they had absolutely no preparation or organization to it. No ropes to get people to follow a single path. They attempted to move people to zig back and forth and that could have worked until another hundred people came pushing up against the lines. Luckily we were close to the front and just moved our way through after ten minutes. Another problem was that they only took a couple people at a time to order and pay. They need to rethink how that works in the future. read more

I'd say The Complex is actually one of the better venues in Utah. I've attended over a dozen concerts here and overall the sound is pretty good. If you're into metal, The Complex gets the best bands. There are multiple venues with The Complex, I've attended The Grand, The Rockwell, and The Lot (outside). My favorite is The Grand because you can still see the show from the balcony bar area. If you want to drink at the other venues you have to go to a separate area or you can only get beer, which is inconvenient. Nevertheless, the drinks are way better than a certain venue down the street. They keep the building pretty clean. And they have plenty of bathrooms which is a nice change compared to some other midsized venues. There's also a friendly security guard there who works the door and tells you to have a nice night. I appreciate little customer service perks like that. And yes, parking is a pain, but where is it not in SLC? read more

Yelp I need a 1/2 star. This place gets 2.5 stars from me. Was there for OMD. Sound is good and the place is clean. The employees seem happy and helpful. Didn't even look at the food but it's popcorn and pretzels type stuff at probably outrageous prices. They serve beer which is a big deal for me but again you're a captive audience so be ready to shell out. $$$ Only reason I would not recommend this venue is the parking is flat out ridiculous in a bad way. You're in the homeless part of town and nowhere to park. It can get scary even for Utah. But if you like the group you're going to see then you'll figure it out. Now you've been warned... read more

Not my favorite venue to see a show at but definitely not the worst. In winter it can be rough since you may have to walk a little bit and can't park super close and then you may heat up because it will get so hot in there during the show! Haven't been here for any summer shows yet but a decent amount of good bands come through salt lake and play at the complex that I'm bound to come here again. It's more like a warehouse type of environment than a venue and I think they have another stage entry or something here as well. read more

I'm surprised this place has gotten such terrible reviews. Have you people even been to concerts before? Get the hell out of Utah for once in your life and see what real venues are like. The complex is situated in the shady/industrial part of town (every good concert venue In every city I've ever been to is) so be prepared for that. Parking is nearly impossible because the area is littered with bars and a shopping mall. But common sense will tell you to take public transportation. Just gonna throw that out there... The building itself is a large warehouse with a couple different stage areas. Most major bands will be in the giant part. There is a smoking section outside (where it should be) and the actual bar is located towards the back of the building. Prices were alright, considering this is a concert venue. They make mixed drinks in the actual bar but only serve beer in the venue part. You've been warned. Gotta love Utah's ridiculously stupid alcohol laws. The staff was alright in my book. I had a conversation with the security guard and most people seemed like they enjoyed working there. Surprisingly the place was cleaner than I was expecting. I've been to some shitty places but considering the size and cleanliness here I was overall impressed. Also considering the size I was pleased with the sound quality and acoustics of the place. Didn't sound like I was listening to a tin can in only one ear. I could hear lyrics and guitar solos so I left a happy camper. Again, I'm not sure why there is so much hate towards this place. This place could not make seating, ticketing, and finding a seat any more convoluted. The staff are borderline belligerent and only know the very specific assignment they're given resulting in a real f**k you attitude. The Complex is a windowless black box of a music venue near the Gateway Mall. Great thought: Let's get some bands to play in an indoor space. However, after a 100 degree day in SLC, add several hundred people and cram them into an un-airconditioned room to hear an up and coming national group, and well, the comfort level isn't there. Add to this sparse seating and you have a venue that would make anyone feel like a sardine in a very hot tin can. I don't like feeling like a sardine. And yeah, with that many people, it kind of got smelly, too. The sound system was cranked up way too high, offering much distortion, which took away from an otherwise good show. Hello, mixer dude? Do you hear what we hear? I spent most of the concert in the food foyer, where the sound was better and the temperature cooler. Surprisingly, the Complex does not gouge concert goers on food and beverages. $2 for water, $3 for Life Water, $3-5 for energy drinks. $3 for a small slice of pizza. And yes, there was beer: Bud Light. Oh, and the person I was with asked if there was ADA seating. "What's that?" asked the door man. Um, "For those with disabilities." "Oh, no. But if you want us to find a chair for you, ask us later." Suggestions: 1. Educate your staff on ADA. 2. Add seating. 3. Turn on the air conditioner. Or sell paper fans. read more

It was my first time seeing a concert here. It could be great but wasn't. Its a stand up venue only. As usual people come early to get an up close spot only to have those who arrive as the headliner starts think they need to be at the front. Really tonight is the day you find out the facts folks. After two hours it got really annoying trying to hold your space. I think they could add some seats in the back For those who don't want to stand up for four hours. If this happened I would return until then I like reserved seats and even if I love the artist I will wait until they play in a venue with seats even if it's on the grass you can sit down. read more

The Complex is a decently large venue in SLC. The beau and I were in town and snagged tickets to a much anticipated alt-J show during our visit. It didn't look like there was much formal parking for the venue, but lots of side streets around the area were available, as well as loads of space at the Gateway Mall just a short walk away. The venue itself (for this particular show) opened at 7pm, and the first act went on at about 8pm. Getting into the place was a total wreck, it was a way bigger turnout than we'd expected and I'm pretty sure met the 1500 person capacity of the building. I was not a huge fan of the venue, it was large and very flat so with a 1500 person crowd it becomes impossible to get a good spot to really enjoy the experience. Leaving the stage area was also a huge pain in the neck as there was only one double door to exit from and it became a huge (and very unpleasant) bottleneck with the large crowd. The adult bevy's were pretty fairly priced (I'm used to SF prices, so 7$ for a 'top shelf' choice was A-OK, despite the very controlled pours that Utah is known for). read more

It's a performance venue so what it needs to provide is great sound and good visuals. I could care less where it's located and UT liquor laws are what they are so there's not much point in complaining about that. Pregame and Lyft or Uber if a night out requires multiple libations. Sadly, unless you're tall and just planning on yell-talking with your friends through the show and only occasionally glancing at the stage, or if maybe you're just going to see some non-descript EDM show and, again, sound quality is not important to you, you may just want to do as I do and skip the shows that keep getting booked at this glorified concrete box and visit friends in other cities with better mid-size venues in order to see some of these acts, or pray that your band/artist is still niche enough to book at The Depot, In the Venue, or Urban Lounge instead, where you can both hear and see the show with some sense of what the performers are creating. I will clarify that I have only suffered through shows in the large, main area. Perhaps the smaller areas are better suited to delivering sights and sounds. Perhaps. read more

This venue is pretty cool. I attended the City Weekly Music Award Finals event here. The place was huge, but I only witnessed a small portion. The layout was perfect for the event. The sound was great, and the stage set up was perfect so everyone could see, no matter where you stood. The bartenders were friendly and delivered great Diet Coke. =) I would be interested to see what it is like for a larger show, but my first impression was positive. The one bad thing I noticed was lack of parking, especially on Jazz nights. Those damn jazz fans always ruin my life, but that is a whole other story. read more

I'm not gonna lie- I was worried about going to a concert here because of the reviews. But seriously, I'm not sure why everyone is complaining so much about this place! The workers were nice, the security was solid (they checked bags and used metal detectors), sound was great. The stage is pretty high up so it was no problem seeing the band. In regards to parking- we just parked at the Gateway Mall parking structure and walked over, which was maybe a 5-10 minute walk. I've gone to many concerts (mostly in LA) and parking is super difficult there. So I thought it would be difficult here based on the awful reviews I read. But seriously, they were they wrong! It was a breeze! We also didn't see any homeless people while walking over from the Gateway Mall. I would 100% come back and see another show here. Nice venue although don't like the aggressive upsells in line to skip the line. Also quite a few homeless hanging out in adjacent parking lots are a deterrent in coming back. I like the venue itself. Intimate with a couple of stages. I'm still not getting used to this whole zion curtain thing and the audience is separated by a catwalk from the area with alochol to the area without. Absolutely ridiculous but not the fault of this establishment....we owe that to the communist like control of the State Liquor....overall its just plain weird. I was roofied at this venue on 11/9/18. I have been to countless shows at other venues. I am extremely careful when I go out. I never accept drinks or anything from people I dont know. About 2 hours in to the show I came too from being blacked out. I dont know what happened. I was with friends I took all the precautions that women sadly need to when they go out. Someone purposely targeted me and roofied me at this place. I had to leave the show and go to the hospital. I was extremely sick i vomited all over myself and could barely get the words out to my friend to take me to the hospital. My blood alcohol level was too low to have had alcohol poisoning. This place needs to get its act together and protect its patrons. read more

Reading past reviews inspires me to write a review on this. Maybe it'll be my straight edge elitism talking but I never understood why people whine about the bars if venues and the laws surrounding it? If you want to drink, stay home and listen to your music. If you don't want to get sweaty at a CONCERT. Stay home. Now on to the actual review. The complex is actually one of my preferred venues for bigger shows. There's multiple rooms in the venue. I've been to the grand room and the Rockwell. The grand is the smaller one holding about 850 people I believe and the Rockwell fitting about 1,500 people? Maybe more. I've seen all kinds of genres here. Hip hop, EDM, hardcore, indie etc. Both of the stages are pretty tall so I think indie, hip hop shows are more enjoyable here. Specially with a nice setup of lights and effects on stage (childish gambino, lights) not as enjoyable for hardcore or pop punk shows. I've seen complaints about the security I'm a little bit iffy on that. I've had really nice security help me out and wanna be tough guys harass me. I think it depends on what promoter is putting on the show. I haven't had any horrible experiences yet. Parking is a headache. There's a couple spots in front of the venue but not completely sure if it's legal to park there. I'd say to park in the gateway parking lot as you'd have to just walk about 3 minutes and its much safer. As concert venue in SLC, not too bad. The music sounds good- which is why I didn't give them only 1 star. The only drinks available to the fans watching shows are huge cans of beer (yuck). The waste they generate is 100% recyclable. And yet they pile up and overflow from the garbage cans around the venue. I asked the bartender if they had any place to recycle and he said no. Come on, don't send that to a landfill. It is 2015! It is outrageous that they do not have bins for recycling. Give your patrons recycling bins so that our children and grandchildren will be able to live on a beautiful green musical world. read more

I attended an electro/house concert here a few days ago, ok it was really a Rave. Many of the previous raves had been at the Great Saltair and this venue really topped it. They had the whole concert divided into two sections, one side was the 21+ area with a long bar and a DJ playing music. They also had screens to watch the main DJ play later in the night. The other side had the main stage which was huge and could easily hold almost as many people as saltair. The bathrooms were also big and I never saw any one waiting in line compared to long lines at other venues. Sound quality was also great and I hope that they continue to have events here. read more

They have upgraded their lights and sound system from the first time I went to the good ole complex. My friends and I went to the LIGHTS show. They used the smaller venue, and it was to be honest, pretty perfect. The light shows were incredible, the sound system blasted when it needed to, made my body vibrate with its sound waves, and the venue still felt intimate because of the smaller space. Would I go to another show here? DEFINITELY. especially if they add more awesomeness to the environment feel, meaning more lights, lasers, and keep the sound they got. read more

I was one of maybe ten women at the Cannibal Corpse concert last night. What can I say, I love my metal. First of all, I was impressed by the staff. They were organized, courteous, and confident. Coat check was efficient, the line was fast, the bathroom was very clean! The band lineup was awesome, and everyone was very cool and respectful- with one exception. This is where The Complex really earns 5 stars. There was a fight, and their guys nipped that bud in two seconds flat. There was a ruckus, then the offenders were pulled apart and ushered out the door, and that was IT. No BS. The rest of us got to enjoy the show without worry! I will be breaking this down in two parts. One is the positive. The sound is excellent and the inside of the venue is fairly clean. The food and beverage is actually quite reasonable compared to several other venues I attend on the west coast. It is also nice that I can go to a show and not have to sweat my butt off the whole time. They managed to keep the underaged drinking to a minimum and cut off the drunk jerks before they became a issue. The ADA sitting area was tall enough to see over most people and kept the general crowd from running into ADA guests. Now the negative. This venue had committed several violations of ADA starting with the blocking off of the ADA parking spots. I was forced to drag my wife's wheelchair through the gravel causing damage to the wheels. Additionally after waiting for 3 other advanced groups got taken in to the venue we had to deal with the incompetence of the security. First off if a person that is in a wheelchair you can't try to force that person to get out in order to search them. You are not allowed to ask about the medically necessary items in their bag and what they are used for, and then when called out the attitude from the little twit was unacceptable. The lead guard was a joke and after all the drama they where putting us through didn't even look into the bag mounted to the back of our chair. It's large enough to hold about anything. After dealing with that headache we went up the ultra narrow ramp to get to the doors going past the dozens of nasty smokers in the only path yo get to the door. I was told they would show us where the ADA seating platform was. A thumb and guy saying that way, really. Now the restrooms do not meet ADA standards as far as hight on toilet and stall hight. There is not proper signage notifying people that ada attendant may be male especially since there was no ADA only restroom present. Just to nitpick since I was pissed about how my wife was made to feel unwelcome by staff and security the doors to the smoking area left open all night so I had to deal with that smell the whole night. Just to let you know OSHA would flip if they saw your ADA seating stage. The ramps had no traction on it which caused me to slip while pushing my wife's wheelchair up it. Overall the show was great, the venue was not bad, however if this was based solely on Ada you would get a negative 2 stars. Someone severely needs to train staff and security on proper ADA treatment. It is a violation of federal law to do certain things to people that are Handicapped. I would recommend this venue if you have no issues however if you are stuck in a chair stay far away read more

Definitely my LEAST favorite place to see a show in SLC. The security are rude and on your ass about any little thing the whole time to the point that its hard to enjoy yourself. Parking is a nightmare. The will call closed down only 30 mins after the show started and they told us that we couldn't get our tickets that we paid for because the will call had decided to close. Absolutely insanely managed and the venue itself is nothing more than a big echoing warehouse with horrible acoustics. There are many bands that I would have gone to see otherwise but decided not to go because they decided to book their show there. read more

I had a blast at the Beats Antique Show last month. Tons of space to dance even though the crowd was rather sizable. The security staff was fun and thorough, which I appreciate because I like to feel safe at big shows, and the bathrooms were HUGE and clean. Never a wait. There was another band playing in the smaller room across the entry way and the spill-over of sound stopped right when I got into the main room. Pretty cool. The bar in the main room was slammed so we went upstairs to another one and got to catch some of the other show. That is a cool perk for the 21+ crew. ;) Sound was clear and the lighting was great. The smoking area has multiple levels to keep it from feeling like a jail. All in all, perfect experience at the Complex. Way to go guys! read more

Never Again. It's situated in a part of SLC that's crummy. Amongst abandoned buildings, trash on the street, and the edge of the homeless population, The Complex seems a dangerous place to walk (especially after dark). But we did, because I didn't want to leave the car unattended in a neighborhood that lacks much legitimate business. It seems the Gateway is the edge of civilization. My unease was not tempered by the body searches which were the first impression of the venue itself. The venue is simply an old warehouse that somebody slapped a stage into. It's dark, it is dank, and the concrete floors were sticky. There was very limited seating (5 tables?) and that must have been for some VIP ticket, because it was inaccessible to us. Along the side two sets of doors accommodated a smoking area--I hate that because there's no way to partition the air. They did partition the drinking area though. What I hate are apparent Utah laws that disallow alcohol in to the concert-viewing area. I've never heard of such a thing before. If you had a wrist band, you could go into a small, gated section and drink ick-scum beer, but no other alcohol. The alcohol: Yucky frat-cheap-a$$ beer. Not even a Shock Top or Blue Moon, and no craft at all. To get what I cynically assume are over-priced watered-down cocktails, you had to go into another room entirely and stay there until the drink was finished, missing the show. The sound was loud, but garbled. The screens along side of the stage only worked during the opening act, then went dark. People were, of course, crammed in tightly like cattle. The body heat made it hot even though I could tell they kicked the air flow up. Every once and again, the smell of fart would waft by. At first I thought it was the people we were standing behind, but the crowd changed up during (45 min!) intermission between the opener and main band, and we smelled it more. Ventilation system? Bathrooms? Gas trapped under the ground? I have no idea, but the smell was persistent enough to warrant mention. The bands were amazing, but I'll never again go to the crummy Complex. First thing you need to know about this venue is that it is multiple venues! This review is for their venue called the Rockwell The staff was funny, polite, and quick at getting people into the venue and guiding them to where they need to be, even when there are multiple concerts going on. The acoustics in the Rockwell were not good, compared to Saltair, The Grand, Urban Lounge, and even outdoor concerts. At the Rockwell, songs that I knew didn't sound familiar partly because the speakers weren't loud enough, and partly because elements of the song got lost somewhere in the space before they reached my ears. Don't plan on having a drink at the Rockwell. While there is a bar in the Complex, you have to choose between being in the concert and being in the bar, and you cannot watch the show while having a beer in hand. While this is commonplace at venues in Utah that allow under 21 to go to concerts, most venues have an area that can still view the stage while serving drinks (ex: The Grand, The Saltair). Bad acoustics, and no drinks are my only two complaints, but considering that a concert is all about the music, the bad acoustics alone justifies the 2 stars here. If you go to the Complex, hope that you're going to The Grand @ The Complex. The sound is better, and you can see the stage from their balcony bar. read more

On Wednesday the 23 a couple of friends and I went to the Khalid concert. It in general was an amazing experience, but there are a couple of things that they could change.. there were people in line for multiple hours in 90 degree weather without water.. my friends and I were there for a total of about 6 hours and didn't habe water.. it was a silly idea but at all of the other concerts we have been to the staff handed out free water when you were in line. At the complex it was 2 dollars.. also they need better staff. Because we went without water for so long in such hot weather she was almost passing out and I was to the where I was about to throw up.. so instead of pushing our way through the stubborn crowed we chose to hop the fence that made a walk way for the crew.. we called a security guard over to make sure it was okay if we hopper the fence to go get water he said yes then pulled out a cigarette and watched us. My first friend got over then I started to climb over.. I started to fall and the security guard who was right there just watched.. I eventually fell and hurt my leg.. when we got over the fence I could not walk.. when I got home from the concert my leg was so swollen i couldn't get my pants off.. my leg is still so swollen and so so brused. I wish I had a better experience.. read more

I like concert venues to have some sense of intimacy and style; this place has neither. It's just a big building with a stage. Both times I've been here I feel like I'm a cow in a warehouse rather than a guest in an entertainment venue. I wish they had a nice outdoor area, some seats in the back, some windows in the front, but alas, none of those things are ever going to happen. read more

My three friends were BRUTALLY assaulted by the security staff last night at The Complex. Two of the security guards friends got upset when my friends stood in front of them. Next thing you know, the two guys (out of nowhere) began to choke and punch my friend. My other friend pulled the two guys off of the one that was being beaten and thats when security jumped in and began to assault my friends, leaving the other two guys alone. The choked, stomped and when one of my friends girlfriends tried to get them to stop, they full on punched her in the face. The girl is 5'2. It doesn't end there. They then took all three of my friends and threw them down a flight of steps The girl broke her leg, the guy (who was knocked out) broke his wrist and chipped his front tooth. Outside, the security staff took off their jackets and continued to assault them. DO NOT GO TO THE COMPLEX UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE ASSAULTED BY STAFF. Came here for Flume and he didn't come till really late which was disappointing. Also, he only played for not even an hour which was really disappointing. I've been here several time but only once in a few months. I like the venue but they don't have much lights. It's always a dark performance - at least the ones I've been to. Every show I've been to artist is always somewhat late. It's not like 5 min late, I'm talking about 30+ min late and it's such a waste of money. read more

There are some good and bad things about this venue,I like how open it is so no mater where your standing you can see the concert and its big enough to accommodate larger crowds,bathrooms are huge and seemed very clean, and they have a snack bar which im sure its good for the youngsters,but the bar situation is ridiculous,its all the way down a long hall no where near the concert,you have to watch it on tv moniters, the lines are so long by the time you get a drink the concert is over,yes they do have a beer garden and the prices arent to outrageous but im not a beer lover. The English language has a lot of words in it--hundreds of them--yet I can't think of one that accurately describes The Complex. Going to The Complex is like a bird dropping in your coffee, or finding a severed lip in your burrito. It's like pulling on somebody else's sweaty underpants at the gym by mistake. It isn't the fact that the line to get in moves at the speed of constipation, or that The Complex staff move people who haven't purchased tickets yet to the front of the line, ahead of those who already have. It isn't the two people in the only two ticketing booths, rifling through stacks of paper to check off individual names for thousands of fans before doling out a hand-ripped ticket. It isn't that the concert starts an hour late, or that The Complex starts the concert while hundreds of people are still stuck outside. No, the reason The Complex has all the entertainment value of a chaffed hemorrhoid is the management behind these issues. Heaven forbid that Enter The Vault printouts work as a ticket, or that The Complex open more ticket booths to speed up the process. I'd even settle for something small. Since they must know it takes a couple of hours to get thousands of people into the venue--or at least has for the two concerts I've been to--perhaps it might be a good idea to open the doors before 7:30 when the concert is supposed to start at 8:00. read more

Even with this venue somehow booking some of my favorite hip hop bands I will never come back. Horrible general/bar layout, not to mention if you do expect to drink your alcohol and watch the show at a table its $20 extra per person... they call that VIP. The venue is... OK. The building is split into two areas where they usually have two bands playing at the same time. The venue is very musty, and it gets hot pretty fast. I went to two concerts here: a rock concert and a rap concert. The sound in here is good until the instruments get really loud, then it sounds a bit unclear. Going into the venue and getting tickets scanned is a smooth process, and there is a lot of standing room within the concert areas. read more
