I havent reviewed here in a couple of years, but like clockwork, whenever my brother and his wife come to town, we always make it to Corner Stable (open since 2011) in the Kings Contrivance Village Center in Columbia for their Wednesday lunch special: a huge half-pound jumbo-lump crab cake for $21 instead of $28! (Also available at their original 1972 location up in Cockeysville.) You turn into the Center just east of Eden Brook or just south of Guilford, from Exit 15 of MD32. There's around 200 parking spaces in the south lot just across the driving-lane from the restaurant, including several spaces reserved for Corner Stable patrons, and even more spaces in the north side of the Center. The main restaurant entrance is on the southeast corner of the west-most building, and I think there's also a direct entrance to the bar area around the northwest from there. The place can get pretty busy around noon, but we've never waited more than 5min. We're always welcomed at the reception counter as we walk in, and if you have to wait a few minutes there's some seating to your left, where you can peruse the posted all-day specials, which you can also find on their webpages from a menu link at the bottom of most pages (but I always have to hunt for :-). Aug 2025: - Mon: Ribs & FF, $17 - Tue: Fried chicken breasts & FF $15.49, or Half-pound burger & FF, $8 -- Wed: Their glorious half-pound jumbo-lump crab cakes & FF, $21 -- - Thu: Seven fried jumbo shrimp & FF & Slaw, $15 The specials are currently the same here in Columbia as they are at their Cockeysville location, but it seems to me that sometimes they don't match at both places. And i think there are still some bar-only specials in the cozy homey bar around the back where they used to have that free poker tournament. We usually get a table or booth near the windows along the left. The wait-staff is always prompt, and they're so friendly that they (usually) laugh at my kinda-dumb jokes! We always order the Wednesday special, broiled. The great half-pound crab cake is a work of art, studded with jumbo lump crab all over and throughout, perfectly moist and tender, great savory flavor, and not too much filler. The fries are fresh and piping hot. It's a filling meal and a sweetly satisfying crab cake. We like all the food we've ever had here, and the always-friendly staff :-). I visited this venue last week for a work dinner. This place was giving me glam honkey tonk vibes, which was odd. Our fairly large group was spread over 3 tables that seated 8 each. The waitress was a marvel and managed our orders like a champ. I was impressed with the beer offerings, though not happy the Heavy Seas Loose Cannon barrel had just kicked. I comforted myself with a Victory Berry Monkey. I was also quite impressed with the overall menu which had a ton of options and variety. Seemed like there was something for everyone (except vegans - there was a vegan in my group and she went with french fries and broccoli). The tables had ordered a variety of appetizers, including a crab pretzel, wings, and fried pickles. Only the fried pickles looked good to me, and when I ate one, they were INDEED delicious (so I ate a bunch more). For my entree I'd ordered the blackened mahi mahi with a side of broccoli and a side of wild rice. I was pretty excited when my food arrived! Then I dug in...I don't think any seasonings were used on the fish nor broccoli at all. They were SUPER bland. The wild rice was just OK. I ate the fish and rice and left the broccoli. We haven't dined at the Corner Stable since before Covid. We used to go on Wednesdays for the "Crab Cake Special" night. Its been so long since I've had a Crab Cake and I couldn't wait to taste that succulent lump crab. Well, I was extremely disappointed. My son and I came here on a Sunday there was a nice number of people here eating Sunday dinner. I like that they have big screen TVs near the booths playing football games. When we came in we were greeted and seated promptly. Our weather was nice and thorough and answered any questions we had regarding menu items as this was our first time there. My only negative is where we were seated, there were a lot of flies, so we had to keep swapping at them while trying to enjoy our food. For an appetizer, I got the corn nuggets that come with syrup for dipping. They were tasty. Visited twice in one week due to proximity to the location. Not once in two visits did any of the staff crack a smile, smirk, or indicator of wanting to make a positive impression. As far as food goes - fries were soft/undercooked, wings were pretty dry, and the shrimp dinner special was smaller than your typical shrimp appetizer. Tuesday Burger special night! $8 for a burger with all the fixings AND fries - that's hard to beat in today's economy. We saw this special along with a 15% off our check advertised on their facebook page so we drove over for an impromptu date night! There is no mention of either of these specials inside the restaurant or on their menu, so we asked before we ordered. The only thing that would be better is if they had happy hour for our beers! We obviously ordered a burger and I saw a version of the blooming onion on their apps so obviously had to get that too. I really wanted to try their famous ribs that they advertise, but they unfortunately don't offer half racks for dinner and I did NOT need a full rack to myself before the holidays. One of the awnings promised Baltimore's Best Ribs and I was intrigued enough to order the Monday special of ribs and French fries for my order while my girlfriend went with the pot roast dinner. We decided to try the potato skins as an appetizer. Like another reviewer stated, the potato skins weren't really potato skins though our order was covered with cheese and bacon on top. Tasty but a little disappointing as we wanted potato skins and not jazzed up potato slices. My ribs were also tasty but far from the best that I've had in the Baltimore area. The sauce was a little too sweet for my tastes; I know they had multiple sauces, perhaps another would have been more palatable? Also, it was almost like they sauced the ribs after cooking them as they were very messy. The French fries were decent if a little underwhelming. My girlfriend's pot roast was just all right. Her mashed potatoes were tasty and the green beans were decent but the pot roast itself was a little dry and the gravy on top was nothing special. Service was subpar; our waitress barely acknowledged us. While she was pulling double duty at the bar, there might have been five tables with customers when we visited and our waitress wasn't waiting on all of them. Nadia is a rockstar! She was our Corner Stable ambassador tonight. She was welcoming, attentive, and respectful. We had water and our "happy" drinks ( as Nadia cheerily called it ) very quickly. My oldest daughter and I had a reservation for Valentine's Day. We were supposed to meet up after she returned from school. She ended up running late, so I called to the restaurant and had the reservation pushed out for later twice. I was so nervous because the time was later into the dinner rush, but the restaurant accommodate us so kindly. I really wanted her to enjoy my favorite entree which was the fried chicken. My husband and I usually share this huge portion of 2 piping hot chicken breasts. And this awesome experience was passed onto the next generation. We got a perfectly seasoned and perfectly crunchy stable onion. We also enjoyed fresh side salads. For sides for the entrees we got broccoli, fries, and Mac & cheese! The chicken is so good that I didn't really need hot sauce! It is well balanced seasoning, perfectly crunchtastic outside, and tender juicy perfection inside... comfort food for a picky person who brags about awesomeness when I meet it!! The restaurant respected social distancing when we were seated. However a small line gathered near the bar where we were seated. I asked to be moved and we were quickly accommodated. The food wasn't bad it just lacked taste with the exception of the shrimp. So if you come fried shrimp and fries is a sure bet. We were disappointed more neither by the bland food or warm beer but when we noticed a tall male waiter chop garnish for a drink on the side of the bar. He had on a mask but no gloves. His hands were all over the orange slices then wiped his hand on his pants. It was alarming to see, considering the day and time we live where viruses are easily transferable & could be deadly. After watching the above incident we clearly watched him walk away to deliver the drink only to return to the register behind the bar and run his fingers through his hair. This isn't hygienic and quite troubling to say the least. I would not dine in here and skeptical if I'd return for togo if the lack of hygiene is displayed for all to see I don't want to imagine what's happening where there isn't a customer view. The three lump crab portions strategically placed atop were not to be found within. I can only say the breading and shreds of crab were more comparable to crab stuffing and had the consistency of soggy bread. We have dined at Corner Stable many times, ordered and brought home crabcakes to serve family and guest on many occasions and never been disappointed, this was an all-time low and will be our last trip to any of their restaurants. If I could have assigned a negative value in the rating, they would have received it. The only saving grace was the waitress who was very apologetic when I informed her, although there was no offer to remove either crabcake from the bill, to which I could not even force myself to finish. Will be returning to Pappas for our crabcakes, they have never disappointed. "Little big sister" and I went here because she loves crab cakes so much so that she drove from Ashburn, VA and the rumor is this is the place for crab cakes in Maryland. I know I'm inviting some pushback but, This crab cake rivals G&M. Very little filler and a decent portion. The only downside is the food was not hot which I thought was odd because we arrived a few minutes after opening and there were not a ton of people waiting. Service was okay. The atmosphere is amazing - spacious, open tables, funny signs (first beer for the price of two and you get the second one free), clean bathrooms, TVs around. Overall very welcoming and a place we enjoy spending time in. The unfortunate part comes with the service and food. I'll give the food a 3/5 - it's ok. We've had the crabcake, ribs, pulled pork sandwich, crabby tots, chicken nugget appetizer, crab dip appetizer... all of it is ok. The prices for these are a couple dollars higher than it should be for the quality, which affects our desire to order more. They have a reasonable happy hour. A dollar off drinks and a list of $5 and $9 appetizers. Be sure to check your bill, as many times the drink discount is not automatically applied. Then there's the service - whether there are one, two, or three bartenders working the area, you WILL be waiting to give your order, get your drinks, get a refill on water, and getting your check. As an example, sitting at the bar on a busy Friday with 3 bartenders in the area, asked for the check at 6:30pm... at 6:45pm asked for the check again... at 6:50pm had to offer to the bartender what I assumed to be half the check amount in cash (that's what I had on me), when I finally got the check and put my card in immediately. At 6:55pm I had to tell the bartender again that I would leave half the value in cash before they ran my card. I finally left at 7pm - 30 minutes after requesting a check. This cannot be acceptable for a bar type situation. Another time, 4 of us arrived around 6:45pm for dinner and drinks... we didn't leave until almost 8:30pm due to service being so slow, even though the bar area was almost empty. After being here several times and hoping for a better result in service and food quality, I think we will look at other options in the area. The menu said "jumbo chicken breasts" and they meant it. I could only eat half of one before getting full. I didn't like the mac and cheese. It was cooked fine, I just didn't like the cheese sauce. We had no room for dessert, even though the funnel cake fries were calling my name. The only damper on the evening (that had nothing to do with the restaurant itself) was a party of 10 celebrating a birthday. They were so loud and the little children were running back and forth and screaming their heads off. The mom kept yelling at her children and the entire restaurant kept looking over at them. Per the restaurant, their baby back ribs are Baltimore's best, and rated in the top 15 restaurants in MD for their crab cakes. I'm not sure if I would say their ribs are Baltimore's best. I have had comparable ribs elsewhere, but I do agree that the meat fell off the bone. It came with a choice of Sweet Original Sauce, Smokey Texas Sauce, or Sweet & Spicy Carolina Sauce. I asked for the Sweet Original and Sweet & Spicy Sauce on the side. My husband tried the Spicy sauce and loved it so much we bought a bottle to take home. They bottle it there and said it will keep for a month refrigerated. The cost for a bottle is $6.99. The crab cakes are very good and I would agree that it is one of the best in MD. My husband said there was a lot of lump crab meat and less filler. You can actually see the lumps on top of the crab cakes. The Wednesday's special is a Half Pound Colossal Jumbo Lump Crab Cake & Stable fries for $15.99. My husband got today's special and I got the Stable's Favorite, Crab Cake & Ribs and 2 sides for $26.99. For my sides, I got the baked beans and mac & cheese, both were very good. The beans were on the sweet side which I like. I thought the ribs were on the smaller side, so I'm not sure if my entree was worth paying $26.99. My husband noticed the menu said corn bread is available upon request, so I got some of those. It was just average. For dessert, we shared the chocolate lava cake which was exceptional. The cake was warm, and with each bite, warm chocolate truffle filling oozed out. The scoop of ice cream balanced out the sweetness of the chocolate. Total perfection. Our server (Toni?) was so nice and attentive considering we had multiple requests and I asked a few questions. She kept up with me. This used to be our first choice for a casual meal in our neighborhood. We have enjoyed many delicious meals there over the past 10 years and continued to patronize them during Covid when they had a robust takeout service. I'm very sad to say that over the past several months, the quality of the food has declined to the point that after last night's meal, we won't be going back. Not only was the flavor of both entrees (pot roast and blackened chicken cranberry salad) unpalatable due to over seasoning, but the texture of each protein item was dry and suggested over processed IQF versus fresh ingredients. That was bad enough, but when I found a long dark hair in my salad and showed it to the server, she took it back to the kitchen, and came back with our bill. Not a word about the hair. She seemed incredulous when I asked if they would comp the salad, which I obviously was not going to finish after finding the hair. I expected a sincere apology from the chef or the manager but, although they did comp the salad, no apology from the chef or manager was forthcoming. It is a real shame that a restaurant known for quality comfort food and tasty bar meals has deteriorated to this extent. read more
