This cafe is on-site at the Heard Museum (devoted to Native American civilizations), and serves natural, organic, and locally sourced eats across a seasonally-crafted Southwest-inspired menu, plus beer and wine. The restaurant has options for outdoor seating in the courtyard or indoors in the cozy cafe. As it was a bit cold and drizzly today, most patrons (including us) opted for indoor seating. Note that the restaurant is situated near the courtyard, before you need to pay entrance fees to the museum. We were greeted and seated quickly, and offered menus from the server. We were enticed by the looks of the entrees that were being delivered to our adjacent tables. Ordering was going to be challenging as everything looked appealing! As usual, my husband and I would split our entrees. We created our own salad-and-salad combo, with my husband ordering an Apple Harvest Salad ($17.50) while I opted for a bowl of posole ($13.50). Per the menu, the salad would have orchard-fresh apples, oven roasted chicken breast, smoked Gouda cheese, toasted walnuts, arugula, and an apple vinaigrette. My husband asked if he could substitute the sweet and spicy mustard dressing from another salad menu choice (no problem). The posole featured slow-roasted pork, tomato, sautéed onions, pinto beans, hominy, savory broth, and Oaxaca cheese, served with fresh-baked corn chips and shredded cabbage. Our lunch was delivered quickly, and tasted great. In fact, we learned later that the posole was featured in Bon Appetit magazine. Nonetheless, we were disappointed that the soup was lukewarm at best; we would've preferred a much hotter soup. Service was a good. Our waitress was attentive without hovering. We especially appreciated that she provided an extra cup, plate, and utensils after we mentioned that we would be splitting our lunch. We're curious about the prickly pear lemonade on the beverages menu and the fry bread sundae on the desserts menu, but they'll have to wait for a future visit! I had a very delicious lunch here outside on the patio. The patio has lots of shade and was very pleasant. My food arrived quickly. I ordered the hummus with fry bread and the shrimp ceviche which came with tortilla chips. The servings were large and it was too much food for one person. Whenever we are in Phoenix we enjoy having a great, relaxed lunch at the Courtyard Cafe. Today I thoroughly enjoyed the sweet and spicy mustard chicken salad ($18). It is one of the tastiest salads, and a lot of food, besides. My better half had the chicken wrap, that was enough food for two meals. The service at the Courtyard is always friendly and attentive. The Courtyard Cafe was a nice surprise. I expected overpriced, boring, and bland food typical of "venues." That is not the case at The Courtyard. The Dreamcatcher salad is absolutely beautiful, and when it is placed on your table, the salad's name becomes readily apparent. This $17 salad is big enough to share or to fill up one eater for lunch. The Fry Bread with Tepary Hummus is nice and light, not greasy at all. The bread is served in points with the Tepary Hummus in the center. This appetizer can easily meet the needs of two to three diners. The Prickly Pear Lemonade is very pink and good, mostly tasting of lemons. The Guacamole was very good and abundant, but the chips tasted factory made and were a bit salty. Don't miss out on the Courtyard Cafe if you're at the Heard Museum--it was phenomenal for lunch! The menu had so many flavorful, delicious items that blew us away and were reasonably priced; service was amazing (the prickly pear lemonade refills just kept coming; to our teen's delight), and the sunshine-filled, peaceful outdoor setting was beyond relaxing. Fry bread was absolutely perfect, crispy on the outside but doughy and warm on the inside, the tepary bean hummus (where else can you try those things if you're not from the area?!) was scrumptious, and the prickly pear lemonade was a huge hit with everyone in our family. The fry bread and hummus app was more than enough for all three of us to share, which meant we didn't even order an entree for our teen. Another guest who spoke fluent Spanish to his server, mentioned that the posolé reminded him of his mother's, which I overheard upon arrival, so I had to order it, and it definitely didn't disappoint. Outdoor under a very large umbrella, had a nice breeze blowing through making it quite comfortable. Seated right away, and had our order taken in minutes be a pleasant, professional server. Menu was not large but covered many different bases, so I choose a Quesadilla and my brother chose the Street Tacos plate. Drinks cam quick, nice and cold, followed by our meal. I have lived in the Southwest my entire life and this was, by far, the best chicken quesadilla I've ever eaten. Perfectly crispy, full of melted, stringing cheese just like they should be. A healthy serving of tender, well-seasoned chicken was a perfect complement to this ultimate quesadilla. My brother devoured the street tacos and had many superlatives to describe how truly good they were. Make an effort to try this place when you're in downtown Phoenix, even if you are not visiting the museum itself, which is also fantastic. read more

I came here on a lunch date with my husband because they had two of the must-eat in Arizona items on their menu. The prickly pair cactus lemonade and fry bread. The prickly pear lemonade really was good! My husband usually can't have lemonade because the sharp citrus flavor catches his throat but he had no issues with this one. He actually had most of it himself! Subtle sweetness. None of that sourness and just an overall good drink. For the appetizer we got the Teparay Bean Hummus with Fry Bread. Asked for no olive oil because we wanted the hummus without the extra fat. This dish was a total win! Hummus was smooth and flavorful. I could eat it just by itself! Fry bread was also soft and fluffy and warm too. Everything was perfect about this. Another great part is that the fry bread was actually baked and not deep fried. Took away so much of the guilt I was going to have from eating fry bread. My husband liked his Birria beef Street Tacos. Fresh and juicy beef, good amount of portion size, and really fresh and good tacos overall. He got the sauce on the side which went really well with the tacos. Also got a side salad which he enjoyed. I asked for the Sweet and Spicy Mustard Chicken Salad with dressing on the side and this was not at all what I expected! VERY BIG NO ON THIS! I order salads at restaurants all the time and whenever I see a chicken salad it's always a salad with all the veggies and such and then grilled chicken on top with the dressing put on top of that or on the side if I ask for it. This was not at all like that. It was like one of those pre-made chicken salads with everything all mixed in. The server did bring some dressing on the side and until I took a bite It wasn't very clear that everything was all mixed with the dressing already. I called the server and asked about it and she said it was already pre-made. I asked for the veggies and chicken separate with dressing separate, or at least some mixed greens on the side so i could balance out the strong flavor. She got the greens but then the manager also came with and picked up my plate of salad and took it away saying that they would get me a new one. Server asked me if this was any better, and all I had in front of me was a plate of mixed greens and some dressing on the side. I didn't know what to say but said I would get back when I get my salad. I waited about 10 to 15 minutes but nothing came. Meanwhile my husband and I heard the kitchen cleaning up. Call the server and she said they were all done and there was no new salad being made for me. WHAT A SHOCK! I asked if they at least had some plane chicken left, but nothing. I actually ended up eating a plate of greens and dressing. Yes, the dressing was good but this was not at all a good end to the meal. The Courtyard Cafe is, aptly, in the courtyard of the Heard Museum. They have indoor and outdoor seating--I'd recommend outdoor if weather permits to enjoy the water features and ambiance. Front of the house is so friendly and the service is great. I've eaten here before and always stuck with southwestern fare. I tried the banh mi this time and was really disappointed. The shrimp were a bit fishy, the baguette was grocery store quality, and while the pickled veggies were fine, the whole sandwich was doused in sweet and sour. We ate at 7 establishments in Arizona over the course of a 4 day trip, at almost exclusively 4+ star rated places, and this was surprisingly the best. We started with a glass of prickly pear lemonade, a lovely bright pink drink I didn't realize was refillable until the end of our dining experience when they asked if I wanted more. It did taste exactly like regular lemonade. The first appetizer was the tepary bean hummus and fry bread, which tasted exactly like I recall a standard chickpea hummus tasting--again enjoyable. The ceviche with chips was amazing and fresh; we loved it. We didn't have belly space for the totopos (nachos) sadly and already ended up taking leftovers to our hotel for later. For my entree I got a bowl of posolé, which was tasty. My husband got the Sonoran cheesesteak without reading the description, assuming it was closer to a Philly cheesesteak by the name or at least some kind of steak. It was a sliced turkey sandwich, which is what a Sonoran cheesesteak is according to a quick Google search. He wasn't in the mood for a turkey sandwich, but that was on him for not reading. He ate it and liked it; I had a bite and also thought it was really good. The presentation was nice, the service was good, and the building was quiet as most people prefer to eat outside. When the host saw my hesitation on what to do with my walker so that it wasn't left out in the walkway, he offered to remove a chair so I would have a place to put it. If we lived in the area, we would definitely go back to the Heard museum due to its size, as well as the cafe for a nice lunch. read more

I come here to eat everytime I come to phoenix. My favorite dish is the ceviche. It's the best I've ever had. And all the entrees I've had have been excellent until today. A friend and I had the ceviche and guacamole to start with. They were excellent. Even the guacamole and chips are the best I've ever had. Then for entrees we ordered the shrimp Louie. I hadn't had a shrimp Louie since high school at the wigwam inn in Litchfield Park but what I was served was not what I remembered. The shrimp Louie at the cafe was served in a plate instead of a bowl and the ingredients were all separated-romaine lettuce, shrimp, small pieces of avocado, a sliced boiled egg, capers and a very delicious sauce. I had to cut up the romaine and mix all the ingredients together. It wasn't fun. It was hard to try and mix everything on a plate. Everything should have been served in a bowl with all the ingredients already mixed to together. I really wished I had ordered the buffalo burger instead. Service and ambience were great. read more

We had lunch here on a Sunday while visiting the museum. When you pay your entry fee, the museum gives you a standard sticker to place on your shirt. You can then exit/re-enter at will that day. We toured the museum for over an hour after it opened at 10 a.m. We then took a break for lunch before 11:30 a.m. At that time, the cafe was nearly empty; we were among the first to get seated. However, later when we were exiting the museum at around 1 p.m., the place was packed and they may have started a wait-list. So, factor that in to your dining plans. The cafe has about 1/3 of its seating indoors and the rest in a courtyard (most or all of which is shaded). We opted to dine indoors. Our server was friendly and efficient. At least 2 of us got sandwiches (I opted for a BLT) and the other may have gotten a salad (?). Everyone enjoyed their dishes. There was the standard sort of in-museum mark-up for dining that you generally see worldwide. If you are on a budget, there may be other options within an easy walk of the museum, though. However, part of the premium you are paying is for the convenience. If I toured the museum again at a similar time, I'd consider returning here. read more

This is a beautiful place to eat a meal or a snack while people-watching during your visit to the museum. We sat in the shade next to the water fountain while enjoying the tacos (comes with a side salad) and the fry bread with beans (best eaten right away when warm). The fry bread platter serves two (4 triangles each), or one person with or without leftovers (I took 3 pieces home for later); the kitchen also made me a side salad so I could get my veggies. The café is situated alongside the entry courtyard to the Heard Museum, adjacent to the bookstore and the museum store across the plaza. I like this because you can dine before entering the museum, or get refreshments after your visit. They have outdoor and indoor dining. The winds were stuff on the day we visited, so we ate indoors. The hostess and wait staff were very attentive and friendly. I enjoyed the posolé, a pork stew with garbanzo beans. My Mom and sister shared the tasty Dreamcatcher salad. Our meal was followed by coffees. Parking is free, and the courtyard restaurant is in a relaxed setting away from the busy streets. read more

Enjoyed a day out with my mom here last weekend. After hours of Heard museum enjoyment, we were famished and stopped in for one of the best lunches I've had in a long time. We ordered (and split) the Thai beef noodle salad and BLT. Both were so big we took 1/2 of it home. One of the best salads I've had and likely the best BLT I've EVER had the pleasure of devouring. Thai salad: the steak was perfectly cooked medium, the noodles were light throughout, the crispy peanuts and bold colors were wildly flavorful and the spicy dressing will keep you coming back for more! BLT: The crispy sourdough, thick cut bacon and garlic aioli made this a otherwise simple sandwich something out of a story book. Paired deliciously with a fresh garden salad and their most fantastic prickly pair vinaigrette. This was a meal made in heaven. They change their menu twice a year but I might just come again for the food. It's truly worth the hours drive into the city. read more

The food was yummy. The quesadilla came with guacamole and sour cream. The steak from my partner's salad were juicy and seasoned. Once we checked in with Yelp, we had a coupon for a free prickly pear lemonade with purchase of an entree, so we used it. Service was fast and he staff was nice. Service is terrible. There is a host stand outside the front door which indicates ... " Wait for hostess to be seated" It was 110 degrees and while we waited outside we noticed the hostess was inside chatting. We walked in and were seated. Ordered our meals. Drinks were brought over ... I waited and waited for a waitress to come back and ended up having to get up myself and find a straw ... found it at the waitress station and grabbed it. Food came, I asked for no bun on my vegan burger and it came with a bun. I again waited and waited for someone, a waitress, anyone who worked there to come by again ... there is about 12 tables in here ... not a huge place but no one ever came over so I went to the hostess stand and asked for mustard. The hostess dropped off mustard packets at the table ... this place is not a delicatessen... mustard packets? We never saw a waitress or anyone again except to pay the bill. read more

The menu is limited but what they offer is an eclectic selection of gourmet type sandwiches, appetizers, and cocktails. On the day we visited it was a stunningly clear sunny day. Before heading into the Heard Museum we decided to grab some lunch here. Perfect choice! Started with the prickly pear lemonade. Only $3.50 for a large glass and our waiter brought over a carafe of it for our table. We ordered two of the most delicious sandwiches. Turkey, brie, and sliced granny smith apples on toasted walnut cranberry bread. Panko crusted chicken sandwich with fresh mozzarella, tomato, and pesto sauce on ciabatta bread. Both were quite big and filling for only $13 each. They came with a side garden salad or quinoa salad. The waiter told us the quinoa salad made with with black beans was a favorite and we could see why - it was mighty tasty. This was like Heaven. If there were only some hammocks or recliners on the grounds to take a nap after our meal would have made it even better. We ate inside this small cafe. There is a large patio that has shade and sun tables. This was a great lunch spot while taking a break between a guided tour and our own tour. We had a bowl of Posole(pork,onion,tomatoes,hominy,pinto beans,cheese) and a pulled pork bbq torta sandwich that came with a choice of a side salad or corn chips. Not sure if there was a choice on the dressing, but it came with a lite vinagrete kind. The ice tea has free refills, but the diet coke came in a can, so no complimentary refills on that.
