I do have to respect the concept of the spot. The location is good, but the place is a bit run down (for my tastes). The upstairs has some spots to chill and get some work done. There are always people meeting for business there. It is a bit cramped, but I do have to respect that they really do try to accommodate the "chill crowd". I had a stale cookie and a chai tea latte. The latte was ok, but I wish I hadn't wasted my money on the cookie. To their credit, they did tell me I could get something else after I consumed the stale cookie, however they should have not had such crap in the first place. In the chicken wrap, the Arugula was slimy and tomatoes were just too old. Also, why were there olives on every food item? We didn't ask for olives on a single item. The meat in every dish seemed closer to "mystery meat" than chicken, beef, or pork. Our meal was terrible. read more

You wont believe what happened to me at this terrible establishment Last week I went into The Cows End to order a coffee. As I was getting served I felt faint and weak and thought I was going to pass out. Instead of falling to the ground I lowered myself to the floor and held onto the counter, this way if I did faint I wouldn't hit my head too hard on the ground. As I'm on the floor holding onto the counter for support the employee that was taking my order started to serve the man behind me. I couldn't believe I was on the floor and he started serving somebody else. Neither did the man behind me ask me if I needed help but he proceeded to place his order. Not one person came to me and asked if they could help me. I remained on the floor for a few minutes as I was blacking out and felt really bad at this point. I managed eventually to stand up and walk to the back to the bathroom as at this point not only am I scared at what I'm experiencing but I'm completely embarrassed. When I got to the back of the restaurant i sat on the floor outside the toilet as I could not stand anymore, I was feeling worse as time went on. Still nobody came to help me. Eventually a member of staff said to me that they will get the owner. The owner came to me a a few minutes later took one look at me and asked what was wrong. By now I'm crying because I didn't know what was wrong with me and I couldn't move. He then said to me he would either call the paramedics or I had to LEAVE BECAUSE I COULDN'T STAY IN THE RESTAURANT. UNBELIEVABLE. I cannot believe how cold the staff and the owner was. I think you can all draw your own conclusions to my story. I'm so shocked and angry that I can't comment on this terrible experience. read more

I hate these places where ordering is really confusing the servers know it and yet make absolutely no effort to clarify the process for you. I came in wanting a coffee which was simple enough to order but my friend was really hungry and wanted sandwich and couldn't figure out where to order the food or where the menu was. It was a weekday morning so there were a few people dining in but no one in line. The server was right in front of us listening to us musing about how the hell we are supposed order, but was either too stoned or cared too little to offer any help. I ordered my coffee and asked about the menu or where to order and he just waved his hand in the general direction to his left. My friend got pissed and decided we should take a walk and eat somewhere else. I tried my coffee and it was awful really it was like ash and water. I'm truly addicted to coffee so I'll drink anything even if it's bank coffee or DMV coffee but this is the first time in recent memory that I've thrown an entire cup out, I just couldn't drink it. I get the whole " cows end" thing now, which doesn't seem so cute or clever anymore, seeing as their coffee tastes like hot shit. read more

it was an experience that i've never had happen and i regret to share, for i'm sure it doesn't entirely represent the staff there. i've come into the restaurant over the last few weeks in attempt to support local businesses who have an established presence in the community. sometimes i'd buy coffee, sometimes a cookie. but when i wouldn't purchase from their menu, i made a point to toss some change into the tip jar. today i had been in the cafe all but 30 minutes when i was approached by someone from behind the barista counter: impolitely asked 'are you gonna buy something?' i mentioned after taking off my headphones, 'sure...just not right now'. i had just slammed some coffee before getting there, and was just returning a few emails before having to take a business call. there's also a more customer friendly way of going about soliciting business from wi-fi lurkers. i know the types and i'm not one of them. not even 5 minutes would pass before presumably the owner would hover over me right as i took the call i had been waiting for. with the headset on, i had no idea what he was saying, and gestured 'one moment'--it could be easily determined that the call was of some importance from the attention i was giving to conversation. not paying the matter any mind, the man dressed in a black shirt, bearded white scruff, would've appeared to be harassing me--in fact, he was. i asked my caller if it was okay to take a number where i could get back in touch in order to address what would soon escalate to a level i hadn't anticipated nor experienced in all of my life of being a customer of ANY establishment. i asked for the man's name in attempt to introduce myself, his reply was along the lines of 'don't bullshit me...are you gonna buy anything or not'. taken off guard, i asked 'excuse me, but i'm your customer. the polite way to go about this is to ask to be of service'. i explained that i was just asked by the sandwich guy whether or not i would be purchasing, all to have everything i had to say rudely interrupted. it shouldn't come to a surprise that the man in the black shirt began using profanity and went as far to assume that i had been in the cafe the day prior and didn't spend any money. i was not at the cow's end the day prior and was frankly called a liar. *jaw hits the floor* my temper at that point began to boil, but i remained collected and respectful right up until he says 'you don't have to buy anything at all'. at this point i was in line trying to just make the entire event easier for the both of us by buying something from the menu. it was at that point that i realized my money would be better spent at another cafe and told him that it wasn't me that he's pissed at. that whatever problems he has do not stem from me and it's absurd to take the matter as far as he had. i was outraged, the experience ruined my entire day and i can't express to anyone who thinks that people deserve respect to EVER support this cafe for as long as it exist. i will never forget this experience! it's the only time i'd ever wish that a company close its doors, for it is a privilege to own a business in this country. it is not a privilege to ever be disrespected as a customer or a human being for just tending to your own matters. The coffee is delicious and so are the sandwiches and salads. Everything is so fresh! There's tables upstairs so it can be a good spot to study. Parking in this area is a daunting task. My only complaint is that they are CASH ONLY. Being someone who never has cash it's a definite annoyance. read more

Nice little cafe. Small but they have a few places to sit and some seating upstairs to study. Must try the hot cocoa. Very good. Prices are fair and much cheaper than Starbucks. They have soy and almond milk. I don't think there was an extra charge. They do have a bathroom In the back. It's clean but looks old and run down. Right next to the beach. The cashier taking the orders around noon today was impatient and obviously high on coffee or something. He seemed to unable to focus, kept jerking around and slamming things. I was surprised that they would sell anything but fresh juice. Apparently they sell juice out of a bottle and call it "natural juice" but this man was too inconvenienced to explain to me the difference between that and real juice, which I later found out is called "fresh pressed juice". I didn't like his take-it-or-leave-it attitude ("you want fresh juice or not?") and asked for my money back. That infuriated him. He rummaged through the cash register and tossed my $20 bill at me and then as I walked out, kept yelling sarcastically, "you have a nice day, you have a nice day" and shaking his head and giggling. I think I overreacted. I should've stayed and asked someone else for help. The reviews are not bad and I walk by there everyday. But I don't think I deserved the treatment I got. Please don't shame people because they don't understand your menu or change their mind. And please don't get high on your own supply - if that was coffee that made you frisky. Some of this is probably due to the tourist traffic. Such places just don't have much of a reason to care about customer service. read more

We had yelped this breakfast spot last month and decided to take the 20 minute walk there for a quick breakfast, although there was nothing quick about it! It seems the kitchen staff were too preoccupied pouring coffees and catching up on their night to focus on getting orders out the door. A simple omelette, a cream cheese bagel and side bacon were too difficult a task it seemed taking almost 45 minutes to prepare. It wasn't long before we noticed that most locals come in for coffee only. It's the alternative to Starbucks which looms a few doors down. We hope the help wanted sign garners what this place needs, because we would likely only consider this place for coffee next time. read more

Great breakfast/lunch spot in Venice! With an array of sandwiches and salads to choose from, theres something that will satisfy any palate. The seating is somewhat limited, but there's space outside and upstairs for small groups. I've come before to get work done upstairs where it's quieter. The atmosphere is very relaxed. Definitely need to try one of their smoothies at some point. read more

I enjoyed studying here! Free wi-fi with purchase since the code for the wi-fi is super long! The workers are nice enough to put the code on your receipt! I only had tea here, but I look forward to trying the sandwiches next time. I intend to come here again for studying as the place does not get that packed and is open until 11pm! Couches and tables are placed along side the walls on the inside more so on the second floor than the first floor. Because of this arrangement there is actually a lot of space not used up but could be for tables and chairs. read more

Was looking for an acai place that was still open at night and this was the only place we could find so props for the longer hours! The serving size was pretty generous with lots of acai albeit melting and bananas on top. The acai bowl was pretty good although I've had better. It was not as sweet as others I've had which prob means it's closer to the original and it was still good. However, wasn't too happy that it was melting fast. And must ask for extra fruit toppings though. I'd go back if in the area and having late evening acai cravings. read more

Maybe not fan-fucking-tasic good, but good, solid, friendly, local. The best other reason to come here is that it's not Starb*cks. And anyone who's lived in LA awhile knows we need places that exude a certain local-ness, character. Not that cheap, middle-america, chainstore garbage. Seriously, a place that has a large menu but cooks all eggs in a microwave? Braving a long line, and an even longer wait for our order this morning gave me a chance to watch the cooks. The menu is large, including lots of different egg dishes but they all have a sameness to them. A dozen eggs are broken into a pitcher, mill and a bit of oil are added and the whole thing is whisked together. For an order, the egg mixture is poured into an omelet shaped container, the lid is closed and off it goes to the zapper. When it comes out, it is topped with other ingredients or cut up. I ordered avocado toast so my eggy thing was on the toast, topped with avo, bacon, cheese, olives (canned) and tomatoes. It tasted okay but not great. We had Americanos -- delicious, but we were finished with our coffee before our breakfasts were ready. Coffee - more stars, eggs, fewer. read more

Cow's End is a Venice landmark. By summer day, tourists enjoy an astoundingly wide variety of iced coffee drinks at this establishment (one block from the beach). By night, Venice locals sip hot things, talk, and study. Great place for people watching. The fact that it has continued to thrive with a Starbucks only two storefronts down is a testament to the wide variety of beverages and friendly neighborhood service. What many don't realize is that Cow's End doubles as a decent deli, offering a myriad of sandwiches to choose from or build. It's no Stroh's when it comes to gourmet food, but you could grab lunch here and be satisfied. Caution: the wait in line is sometimes as long as the drink menu. And, whatever you do, beware looking closely at the giant wood cow hanging from the ceiling - the thick layer of dust may be enough to send you to Starbucks afterall. read more
