    Clam chowder and side salad

Was expecting more but feel even at 3 stars I am being nice. Came in for a light lunch with my wife because we couldn't find parking close to the other place that we were actually planning on going to first. Was mildly disappointed and feel they survive based on location alone. It's not that the food is bad, I would say it is on the better side of average, but the portions are small and the prices are high. Waitress was super nice and the reason they got three stars. Nothing had that OMG reaction as far as quality or selection. The location is great, inside the dining room is nice and inviting, and parking is horrible.

"The Main Thing is to Keep The Main Thing The Main Thing" This place has been around forever. Newport Beach was a big party destination for me back in my college days. We used to go to the Crab Cooker all the time for some clam chowder and breadsticks. Back in those days, the breadsticks came free in a container at your table. Us broke college kids would order some soup and devour all of those free breadsticks. Now they just give you a few with your cup of soup. But despite the changes, I still enjoy coming here after all these years. The Crab Cooker is full of nostalgia and still serves up some yummy classic seafood. You cannot miss this place when walking by Newport Pier. They still have the red neon sign on the outside of the building. The decor inside pays homage to Newport Beach's fishing history. The Crab Cooker opened in 1951. It is family-owned and has always been about delivering quality seafood. They catch fish by hook and line only and never with nets. The environment is always a fun crowd. They sell merch too if you want to grab some on your way out. I came here recently and grabbed some chowder and shrimp on a skewer. I absolutely love their clam chowder - so good! Parking is still a pain, but I got lucky and found a spot nearby. Not sure if they still do this, but the Crab Cooker used to have postcards in the front that you can fill out and they will stamp and mail for you. I always thought that was pretty cool. The Crab Cooker also has a location in Tustin.

Iconic spot to eat in Newport Beach! Location wise, it's in the middle of the action at Balboa Island so you can come here for lunch and enjoy your day with exploring around the area. We started either the crab cocktail. Taste wise it was great and it was a fair portion, loved the cocktail sauce. The crab was just really overcooked. We also ordered the lunch plate of the combination and scallops skewer. We always ordered the slaw and the cheesy potatoes for the sides. The food was great, scallops never miss here and are always tender. What we really enjoy was the tartar sauce they give. It looks like it was a lot cleaner here than before and renovation was done. It was a lot cozier than before with plenty of seating inside. Staff were nice as well. Service was pretty quick and food came out pretty quickly.

A nostalgic favorite, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. Look. This place isn't perfect. It isn't revolutionary. It isn't even a particularly great value. It has not updated, adapted, or reconsidered a single thing in decades, and that is precisely the point. The Crab Cooker knows exactly what it is, and it has been that thing so long and so stubbornly that the stubbornness has become the appeal. I respect it enormously. What it does is serve flawless, easy-to-replicate seafood classics that somehow nobody else around here bothers to get right. So don't overthink it. The smoked fish is good. The chowder is good. The cheesy potatoes swimming in clarified butter are scary good, the kind of dish you think about later at inappropriate moments. Put those next to a heaping pile of king crab legs, which get rarer and more precious every year, and you've got a winner no matter how much of a pain in the ass the parking turned out to be. The Crab Cooker, don't go changing.

Thank you Tim M. for such amazing service. You are dedicated to your customers with a unique and patient demeanor. We got the clam chowder, and crab cakes with their delicious sourdough bread. For dinner we had Alaskan King Crab Legs that were hearty chunks of meat. The lobster skewers were delicious. The ambiance is family friendly and great for celebration a special occasion or just a great day at the beach.

A classic Newport landmark. I hadn't been since the remodel so I was excited to be here! Parking is always a tad stressful so I got her at 5 and got really lucky and parked on the steet. For $2.10 a per hour- total bargain!! I was glad to see The menu stayed the same. We Got the crab cakes (they we're just okay..not big chunks of crab like a tall, meaty Maryland crab cake - but more like shredded crab flat pancake) coleslaw (bland) potatoes (cheesy goodness-star of the show) smoked salmon appetizer (nothing to write home about) They do a great job with their branded merch (hats, mugs, t-shirts) and the fresh seafood counter at the entrance looks fantastic.

Upon entering this staple of Newports original Crab Cooker, we were sat quickly and with a smile by Victoria. She was the only Server on the floor as it was an hour before closing. She had the other side of the .-reastruant, and '11 topsea/1 15 min before closing.--She is professional and with a smile. The food fan fare was quite the best and different than *normal* seafood restaura, nts. And so delicious. Ambiance is eclectic with nautical beauties and oddities.. recomend to all. Price decent to fir the area.

Me and my friend had ordered a to go order when we went to pick it up. I had never been there , first time and it looked like a cute atmosphere so we decided to go inside and order a couple ciders . The hostess was nice and seated us .We ended up eating some of our food while we had our drinks. We were going to order another round until the waitress Becca came over and told us we weren't allowed to sit inside even though we did order additional stuff and still spent almost $70 . That comment could have waited, she was really nasty. Mind you we did clean up the table, left no work for her and plenty of other empty tables for others . She didn't lose out on anything. We apologized to the hostess but because of that waitresses rudeness i will never go back . She made sure she made no effort to be nice so my 1st experience was not good at all . Luckily the food was good but the mango keylime pie that we ordered and paid ahead of time was unavailable and this was at noon . Not worth the hype at all

A Balboa staple packed with memories and history. With the location, comes parking challenges. We ordered clam chowder (the favorite of our group and we bought some to take home), salmon, crab cakes (both yummy) and smoked fish (ok). The smoked fish was an appetizer but came out after the entrees were served. The Cole slaw side was yummy but the cheese potatoes did not live up to the hype. Too many tables were sat at the same time and the server seemed spread to thin.

Shrimp and scallop skewer with their famous coleslaw and potato

Oh man, this place is incredible as soon as I walked out the door I wanted to have dinner there again. Everything we ate was absolutely amazing. We had calamari crabcakes, a shrimp and crab cocktail, that is relatively small so order multiple as apps. My friend had the shrimp and scallop skewer and it comes seasoned perfectly and it's so buttery and it just melts in your mouth. I got the combination skewer and same thing melts in your mouth. It's buttery incredible seasoned perfectly. I can't wait to come back here again. I wish I would've gotten some stuff to go. The menu is kind of hard to understand in terms of whether you're gonna have to pick apart a whole crab or if it's crab legs I think that we asked the server about the Japan item and she told us that it was a full crab and in reality it was crab legs, so that was a kind of a bummer for us because we thought otherwise. So make sure you clarify what you want.

This place is always. Lean and inviting. Fresh fish when you walk thru the front door. The service is always good. They are on it. Paper plates make it easy for them to clean up. Not too loud inside. Lots to look at. Always a good meal here. Parking can be tough at times.

Been coming here for ages since I was a teenager but shamefully I'm admitting I haven't been in about five years. I hadn't been here since the remodel, but the place still has that same personality I remember. I came in today with one thing on my mind, their famous clam chowder. By far the best I've ever had and they even put it on the menu as the world's best lol. The chowder came out nice and hot and you can immediately tell it's made fresh. It's thick but not heavy, super creamy with clams in every spoonful along with soft potatoes and little bits of veggies mixed in. The flavor is rich and buttery without being overpowering and it has that perfect comforting homemade taste that keeps you going back for another bite. Every spoonful just tastes complete and balanced. Honestly it tasted exactly how I remembered it and now I remember why I used to come here all the time.

Lobster was amazing. New England clam chowder was also delicious

Ask the Community - The Crab Cooker

    Reservations can be made?

I'm not sure about reservations. We were there on a Wednesday and they had a steady flow but no wait so, I never thought to ask about reservations. Sorry

    Is there a Wait List?

There certainly can be a wait list depending upon the usual factors as time of day, time of year, tourist season, etc. This is a very popular restaurant with a great reputation. Newport Beach itself can be overrun with visitors during the summer…

    How is Parking?

Expect to find a spot on the street and pay a meter.

    Do they take reservations?

No, they don't take reservations. Fri - Sun, they can be busy, especially as the weather warms up and the beach crowd increases. I usually go during the week, and if you get there before 6:00 P.M., you usually have no problem getting immediate…

Are repairs complete? Are they open for pickup / delivery?

Yes, they are back in business, sorta.

Is this location open or not yet?

    Newport Beach is open, finally.

    Is this location still open?👀

Yes NB is open, regular hours. (What do you mean "still open".)

Does anyone know if June 1, 2019 is a firm re-open date for the NB location?

That's a firm NO. But June 2022 would be a better guess. It is worth waiting for.

They nailed the potato to egg ratio, which I feel like breakfast burritos get wrong way too often. The salsa, guacamole, and sour cream on top all worked really well together and gave it a nice balance of flavors. It was also the perfect portion. I left satisfied without feeling like I needed to be rolled out of the restaurant. My wife got the crab eggs Benedict and really enjoyed hers as well. We weren't seated in the area with the pool, but saw it as we passed by. The menu is extensive with both surf and turf options. To start, there is free bread brought to your table. This isn't just your average free bread though. It tastes rich and buttery, and is presented in a swirl pattern. I ate 2 immediately haha. For appetizer, we opted for little neck clams and wood roasted octopus. I was pleasantly surprised by the portions of these. The flavors of the little neck clams with the squeeze of lemon was absolutely delicious, and paired wonderfully with the crunchy toast. The octopus was yummy, although the aioli was a little too salty for me. For our entrees, we got the petite filet mignon and striped bass with crab. The latter is not on the menu! We enjoyed both entrees - the filet mignon was cooked to medium rare perfection. The bass tasted fresh and unique with the crab on top. For sides, we got the crème brûlée corn (their specialty and must get!) and whipped potatoes (yes, not mashed but WHIPPED - airy but also thick with creaminess and flavor). For dessert, we got to pick any dessert on the house. It was a tough decision! We ultimately decided to go with their house specialty, warm vanilla caramel cake. Oh my ooey gooey goodness! On my most recent visit, my wife and I stopped in on a Sunday afternoon at about 1:30 p.m. (as the lunch rush was coming to an end.) We could see that most of the tables on the outdoor patio were occupied, but we could also see a couple of tables that were available. When we told the hostess that we'd like to eat lunch on the patio, she replied that they were not currently accepting walk-ins to sit on the patio, but would we'd like to sit inside. It seemed a bit strange, but being a beautiful day, we didn't want to sit inside, so we declined and headed out the door to find some place else to enjoy lunch. As we were unlocking our bikes, a young woman who looked like a manager came out and got our attention and introduced herself as Brittany. She said that there was a short wait for an outside table, maybe 5 minutes or so for them to clean it up and get it reset. She said that they did indeed have a couple of reservations outside, but that tables were also opening up. We went back in, waited a couple of minutes, and then sat down for a lovely lunch I think that the hostess was probably just a little confused and used verbage that was slightly incorrect, but we're so thankful that Brittany recognized the situation and came out after us! I had the Seafood Louie Salad (As I almost always do when I come here) and my wife had the Fish and Chips. They were both delightful, as usual. Also, this place has the best sourdough bread anywhere! And one more also, they have fried Ipswich clams, just like the ones I love so much when I visit family back in New Hampshire

I have to say, the espresso martini was the absolute worst I've ever had in my life--I order them often and this one was so bitter and very difficult to drink. I ordered a shot of Bailey's to balance it out a little, but would recommend steering clear of this one. My cousins ordered the coconut margarita which was also not good--very sour. Our table shared the calamari which was pretty good but a very small portion, so if you have more than two people sharing it, order more. Entrees ranging from fish to chicken to salads were okay, but I think beyond enjoying their deck, I wouldn't come back here. Or I'd at least order differently next time.

I went on a monday night and got the baja bucket which was the deal for the night ! The baja bucket contains. 4 lobster tails, 12 shrimp, 2 corn on the cobs, chicken, steam, rice and beans, tortilla, and a salad (or up charge soup) plus fried ice cream at the end. OMG! It was soooo good, the food is flash fried which worked perfectly for this meal. Everything was cooked perfectly, j clouding the lobster. I enjoyed every bite. I will say I split this with my boyfriend and there was sooo much food that by the time the ice cream came around it was hard to fully indulge in because I was so stuffed! Modal night the deal brings this meal to about 70/80 dollars. That is honestly so much food and hard to come by in 2026! I've been telling so many of my friends about the experience here. The servers were attentive and very knowledgeable. The place looks like a cute tiki dive bar but restaurant style. It' has a cute waterfall that we were able to sit next to. Also their cocktails are nice! Cannot wait to go back

The lobster was good, shrimp pretty meh but the Alaskan King Crab ruined just about everything. Steak was ordered Medium but came out Done, chicken was basic, and corn was chewy and not fresh like it had been boiled, steamed, and then grilled. The margaritas we ordered were too sweet and about 16oz with only one shot in the drink ($18 each) not worth the price for juice and hardly any alcohol. Now, back to the ruinous Alaskan King Crap (not a typo). The crab was molting which means when you crack open the shell there's a leathery skin on the meat inside that's supposed to replace the outer shell when the crab is still growing, this extends to the spikier parts of the crab and if swallowed could cause issues and is dangerous to eat. My girlfriend and I tried to eat around it and see if it was just a few legs but it was the whole damned thing. Our wonderful server offered us a replacement of snow crab but our total bill was never adjusted so we paid for King Crab and never got it. I hear that this is par for the course for this place which is sad because this place used to be pretty legendary. Too bad, I don't recommend but left a star for our server who was awesome.

Our server was incredibly sweet and friendly, and checked on us often. The manager was also very polite and kind enough to let us know that our entrées were delayed and offered us an appetizer while we waited. The décor inside is beautiful, classy, and elegant, and the bar area was also lovely with a great selection of drinks. The food was tasty, although the portion sizes felt a bit small for the price. We got the special which was the lightly breaded Dover fish and the crab cakes. Overall, it was a wonderful experience thanks to the customer service, ambiance, and food. It is on the more expensive side, but we had a great dinner.

Shrimp cocktail 8.86/10- this was pretty good, the cocktail sauce is good. Normally the shrimp is bigger but other than that it was very good. Crab cake 8.32/10- this was okay, just overly buttery. Normally the butter amount they use is perfect but today it was just overflowing in butter. Emerald kale salad side 4.26/10- this is my favorite salad ever but today it was absolutely drenched in sauce. It was honestly hard to eat as it just tasted like dressing. My mom also got the chopped vegetable salad and asked for it to be lightly dressed, but her salad was overly dressed too. They had given us plain extra greens to try to subsidize the extreme dressing, but this was quite disappointing. Tres leches 1/10- this is my absolute favorite dessert but today it was terrible. The tres leches had a very sour taste to it, and it's normally so fluffy and light but today it was super dense. The sour flavor was absolutely terrible though, since it's supposed to be milky. I'm not sure if there's a new chef, but today the food was just not good and it almost felt like a joke. We have been coming to Gulfstream for 16 years now and the tres leches have never been sour. Hopefully they really make changes to go back to their original recipes, because this was pretty upsetting
