A quick trip to St. Augustine had us trying to go to the Spanish Bakery. Unfortunately, they opened at 11am instead of 10am as posted online. Driving by, we noticed The Cuban Cafe and Bakery and decided to grab food there instead. We ordered a papa rellena, a beef empanada, and a pan con bistec. The papa rellena was super crispy with creamy mashed potatoes and nicely flavored beef in the center. The empanada was pretty good and I think had potatoes inside which was new to me for a Cuban empanada. The sandwich was also tasty - thinly sliced steak on crispy Cuban bread topped with lettuce, tomato, and crispy potato sticks. Everything was fresh, tasty, and enjoyable. Probably not the best Cuban food I've had, but a pretty good version. read more

My wife really liked the first Cuban Sandwich she had, the second one was not as good, hence the 2 stars for not consistently good. We walk in, I wasn't impressed with the decor or the eat and run feel to the place but I wasn't ordering anyway, besides it's all about the food, right? I tried the Café con Leche both times we were there and it was delicious both times, the Cuban Sandwich was not, the second sandwich didn't have enough cheese or Lechón, the meat was also a bit cold. We had a girl make the sandwich the first time but the second time it was a male and he didn't cut the mustard. I politely mentioned this to the girl at the register as it seems they are new to the business. I said, when making a sandwich it has to be consistent, if you like it the first time you are likely to return, but if its not the same, you've lost a customer because you're not consistent with your sandwich making. We arrived and employees were chit chatting at the back oblivious to customers arriving. No rice. No beans. No decaf coffee. No vegetables. No fresh bread. No service. It was not just us - there were others there who complained that they paid and did not receive their food for over 20 minutes. The place was almost empty. What are they there for? The little place made no indications that it was closing for the night so despite Yelp telling us it was "closed" we walked in. There were only empanadas left; the rest of the baked goods in the display weren't there. The two persons behind the counter seemed to enjoy talking to each other rather than attending to our orders. The floor and tables had crumbs of food on it. The sandwiches themselves were decent but definitely lacked the "wow" factor. I really liked the texture of my Cuban sandwich as well as the little crunchy "fries" in the bistec sandwich. Ordered the sandwich special, and then waited a half hour in the warm cafe to receive it. There were only about four other customers, so they weren't exactly busy. I think they just forgot about us. After twenty minutes, I asked about the status of the sandwich; the cashier walked toward the back and had a quick word with the cook. He then said I was "next." A family of 6 then walked in and all ordered sandwiches. Ten minutes later, I received my sandwich, as did the family of 6. The sandwich was good, but not worth the wait. Had the Pan Con Croqueta and a Cafe Con Leche both were really good. Limited seating inside but there is small patio that has seating as well. The restaurant was crowed and people never stopped coming in while we were there. Ordered at the counter, staff was friendly and helpful with the menu.
