This place has the best hospitality of South Dakota! We came in hungry and in the off season, there isn't much open. Found this place on yelp and the reviews hold up! Beer, great! Food, excellent! My husband and I had the Wolf Burger and the Pasta with Pesto Sauce; absolutely amazing! The food was so flavorful, best meal we've had in South Dakota. Great place! We went there two times in our three day stay. We had a party of 8. They only have a couple options for a party that big so we lucked out in getting a table. Everyone was pleased with their food. We did the Reuben, salads, pasta, spicy green beans, chili, ranchers pie, onion rings. The buffalo sandwich was tasty but tough. What made the meals extra good was our server, Megan. She was friendly, happy, efficient and one of the best servers I have had. We haven't been to Custer in 4 years & The Custer Wolf was a new addition since then, so thought we'd try it out! Boy were we pleased! The servers were all so pleasant & helpful & when I saw this luscious sandwich delivered to the table next to us, I was told it was a Reuben & that it was yummy! So I ordered it from our very friendly server; asked for the sauerkraut on the side & the VERY spicy sauce on the side (all came exactly as I ordered it!). It came with one small pickle toothpicked on top & it was a great pickle, so I asked our server if I could possibly have another--he brought me a cup full of them! Also you get to pick a side & I chose salad with the Lime Cilantro dressing (wish I could have the recipe!) Hubby had the Rancher's Pie (like a Shepherd's Pie) and all of it was great! So, no need to go anywhere else in Custer. The food here was DELICIOUS. The craft beer selection may be small, but the variety was perfect. My hubby had the buffalo brisket and I had the walaye po boy. It's now dinner time, and we keep talking about how delicious the meal was. We've been traveling the black hills area for a week, and this is by far the best meal we've eaten. The service was great. So happy to find this gem in an area where you don't expect more than pub fare. Kudos to the chef for his spin on the food served. I only wish I had taken pictures for you to taste with your eyes. Steady stream of customers at 2:30 on a weekday afternoon, but food came quickly and was all excellent. I tried calling in a take out order for over 30 minutes and kept getting a busy signal. I decided to physically go to the restaurant and get a to go order. When I arrived it was still over 30 minutes until closing. I asked if there was an issue and L was told they had taken the phone off the hook because they were too busy. I asked to place a to go order and although they apologized, they said they were too busy to do a take out order. I'm assuming the food is great but the customer service was terrible. If you have food to serve and plenty of time, you don't turn away customers. read more

Just had dinner there with my husband. It was great. The service was awesome the food was delicious too. My only problem was they knew we were heading back to My. Rushmore for the evening lighting and had gotten dessert to go. We paid our bill and had received 1 dessert but waited forever for the other one. Wandering around and finding many places CLOSED in Custer at 2. Guess they don't know people from different time zones eat later. Lol. Anyway. Found Custer wolf bc of that very reason! Waitstaff get five stars! Happy pleasant and quick to refill and get orders. I recommend the cilantro dressing. I could have drank a bottle of it. It was soooo good. Had the poboy and it was delicious! I will highly recommend it but would have liked a little bigger pieces of the fish. But huge five stars in flavor! Hubby liked Guinness on tap. Had lunch at The Custer Wolf after riding on the Michelson Trail. Great food, great service, great atmosphere! Highly recommended!

We were here in September 2020 on a weekend trip. I called ahead to try to get a reservation, but unfortunately they don't accept them. I was told our arrival time would have us seated quickly but we ended up waiting over 30 minutes outside. This is all understandable and doesn't really effect my review but I think it's something they could work on. Down to my issue. When we were ordering, our waiter was going over their "customer favorites" and, when I ordered my meal, they responded with a snide comment about how it was a favorite of their "8 year old customers". If we hadn't waited so long, I would have gotten up and left. I was humiliated in front of my father-in-law, who I was meeting for the first time. Was the food good? Yes, my childish dinner was good. Would I recommend this restaurant? Definitely not. We will not be returning. read more

Custer Wolf is one of the better dining options in Custer. And what's more important is that they're consistently good. Excellent tap selection, decent wines, remarkable pub food, and the nicest folks you'll meet this side of Deadwood. Sam made efforts to remember patrons names, not in a hokey way but in a genuine comfortable way (I really appreciated that). Sam made appreciated beer suggestions and the food was excellent. Our party of 6 ordered a variety of entrees and we were all satisfied. Custer Wolf needs better signage to bring in summer's tourists, but it's with seeking out all year long. read more

We were there with a party of five the place didn't seem busy and we waited an hour and ten minutes for our food. And with three kids that's not acceptable. I had to ask for our appetizer after 35 minutes of waiting and then when we finally got it it was like warm. Staff was friendly but not very good with updates or doing simple task like refilling water (I was only given one the entire meal). There was never a "sorry about the wait" or anything. read more

We stopped by Custer Wolf after a long hike at Wind Cave National Park. Their onion rings are unmatched. Four of us devoured two orders. I just left The Custer Wolf 5 minutes ago. We went up to the host stand to put our name on the list. She told us it would be an hour wait for a party of 4. Two minutes later another party got 4 walked up asked the same hostess how long would the wait be.... she told them 20 minutes .... of course they were Caucasian and we are African American. We went across the street to Buglin Bull and had a 5 minute wait but was treated so kind by the host and waitress . If you are black ... don't go to the Custer Wolf... Great place for solos at the bar, couples, or the family. We brought three kids and three adults and sat at the table at the back. Food was original and fantastic. The folks that work there were super helpful and considerate. Great bookshelf with games and cool old reference books. We were there during an April snowstorm and I think really lucky to just walk in and get a table. The quality of the food and service rivals big cities, but in contrast this place is super laid back. I'm sure it's crazy packed (no pun intended) in the summer. No, don't look for reservations, they're too legit. The secret to getting a quick table? Just hope for a snowstorm! read more
