Very nice experience. Club was dark but it set a nice mood for the trio we watched perform. Although it was not the traditional jazz group I was expecting the music was excellent. Very professional musicuans with a lot of original compositions. Loved the fact that it was a family friendly atmosphere and I was comfortable being there with my teenage son and his friend. Not a lot of venues that young music lovers can see a live performance like this in town. We shared a fancy basket of fries and some cookies. Both were pretty darn good and didn't set me back too much. Service was good and servers only smelled of weed a little bit. The Dark Room: Open Air Concert series I was unaware of the Open Air Concert series. It was delightful! I went on a perfect night with a good breeze. Ptah Williams was playing for Janet Eve's (Krantzberg Art Resident). Dinner was included with my surprise Birthday gift!! A bottle of wine, appetizer, entree and dessert. We started with a bucket of ice on the table and bottle of water. Fans were provided for two-fold process: Keep you cool Get the attention of the hostess/server There are 2 servers during the event to serve (I believe) 12 tables. Our appetizer was served in a pizza to go box: (REMEMBER there was no menu so, I'm going off the photos and what it seems I saw and tasted) ------- 2-plantains or Fried green tomatoes (no one knew exactly what our apps were). there was No menu. 2-corn meal based things (someone thought it was stuffed w/cheese) because it looked like a cheeto cheese puff (see photo) 2-cheese filled empanadas (Dipping Sauces included: watermelon something and aioli something) 2-cream cheese Bruschetta slices. Entree was served in reusable To-Go containers: (There was menu for this) ------ Mojo Grilled Chicken (Boneless Citrus Marinated Chicken thighs), red beans & white rice, tomato salsa, served with 2-deep fried plantain waffles (aioli dipping sauce - on the side). Okay...the food was NOT the best. Out of the appetizers the cheese empanada was the best, it was soft, the cheese was no melty like with a pull.. and it looked store bought. The chicken was charred a bit too much with an over abundance of rice. The seasoning was perfect...but I feel the food was cooked too fast and the rice was slighty over cooked. The plantain was SAD....IT appeared the chef opened a bag of plantain chips, soaked them to a consistency of 'almost' able to mash, added flour and made a patty. Deep fried it and put it on the dish and decided to add a dipping sauce for taste because it was super hard and bland. Plantains are readily available and some already black, ready to be mashed, seasoned and flash fried...not deep deep fried. But you could tell these were from a bag because they had chips stuck to them that didn't get mashed. I was disappointed. I am happy I had wine to drink because we drank the entire bottle...then went out for a proper meal. Dessert was a caramel chip cookie over cooked. DANG what a disappointment. Saw a Teddy Pendergraas tribute show with CJ Jeffers from the Spinners which was very entertaining. My complaint is with the bartender who took our order even put ice in our cups but also waited on three other people including one woman who ordered 10 drinks, and then the bartender just walked away! I highly respect the ability of the musicians & guest singers to actually listen to each other during some improvised guests & solo endeavors. Jazz @ Jazz's best I honestly showed up in a bad mood & watching them listen change change their sound to support another showed patience & talent few have. Yeah, there is an upscale wine bar that also serves cocktails & local microbrews. Local 4 Hands Divided Sky IPA is my usual choice. Yes, I have had interesting & delicious food here. The new venue is beautiful in entrance of the church rehabilitation to the The Grandel theater. However IMHO, the Dark Room is about visiting a different way the world could work. I came for brunch. Hubby was s'posed to come too, but chose not to... I went ANYway! I ordered the Seared Salmon & Eggs, all of which was delectable. The music, by Janet Evra, was AWESOME. AND they did the volume right! Such a great combination. I chilled and spent some time, so I went through some specialty cocktails... First, of course, I had the Bloody Mary. St. Louis seems in limited supply of nice, low key lounges with live music. Especially lounges with live jazz music. It is for this reason that I can't contain myself on how much I love The Dark Room. The Dark Room is located inside the lobby of the Grandel Theatre. I had my first encounter there this past Friday night. The ambiance is nice and intimate, with a cool and dark vibe. tables line around the stage, where a live band plays nice jazz, and soulful R&B as was the case on Friday night. The bar is also nice and large. Here's some Pros and Cons. Pros: - Music: The live music was great on Friday night, and I believe the name of the band was "The Truth". I really enjoyed them. I also liked the soft background music when the band wasn't performing. I kept hearing some of my favorite Neo-Soul and hip hop songs playing in the background throughout the night. The Foreign Exchange, Lion Babe, Jill Scott, and more set nice melodies throughout the evening. - Decent Service: Our waitress was very kind and thoughtful to offer to substitute things for us on the menu (rice instead of cous cous), and other things to try to accommodate us. - Good Happy Hour: If you can make it there at 11pm, then you can be rewarded with a large variety of Happy Hour options for food and beverages. - Flavorful and Uncommon Menu: Although the menu isn't extremely large, everything on the menu sounds superb! I had the lamb meatballs and my friend and I shared the Chicken Artichoke Dip appetizer. The meatballs were very good and as I mentioned earlier, I was able to substitute the cous cous that it normally comes with for rice. The Dip wasn't the best thing I've ever had, but it wasn't bad to try something different. I probably won't get it again. It was hard to make a decision on what to order because everything on the menu sounded great. - Really Good Drinks: For my cocktails, I first had a Manhattan with Rose Water. It was PERFECT! The rose water really added a nice subtle hint to the drink. I loved it! Once 11pm rolled around, I ordered a $3 Bourbon and Diet Coke. It was also very good and really strong! - No Cover: Unlike certain places in town with live music and food service, The Dark Room doesn't charge a cover. Cons (I don't have much to complain about, but...): - Prices: The prices for food and signature cocktails here are not cheap. It's a good thing that they have a Happy Hour menu to combat that. - Happy Hour is too Late: As much as I like the idea of coming to the Dark Room as maybe an occasional late night "after" spot, the fact that you have to wait until 11pm to get the reduced prices on specific items, may prevent me from going there as frequently as I would like. If it were to start at 9 or 10, that would be a little better. But if I am out and am trying to wait that late for my next destination, I will probably either just stay where I'm already at or will be heading home before even making it to The Dark Room. - The Service at the End of the Night: So I gave the pro of "decent" service above. Here's the reason I said "decent" and not "great". After waiting for happy hour to start for an hour, once 11pm hit, the wait staff was no where to be found. They gradually emerged and I could order my second drink. When we asked for the checks, our new waitress asked us what we ordered. That was odd and a little disorganized, but we were honest and told her our correct orders. Still, it was kind of strange to be asked that. All in all, I will definitely go back to The Dark Room! And although there were certain things about it that I'd change, I still enjoyed my time there enough to want to go back and tell others to check it out! There weren't a lot of people there on Friday night so it makes for a good place to relax, unwind, and enjoy yourself. My husband ordered flat iron steak and it was delicious. I got Italian wedding soup and was disappointed in it. Not much to it and kinda salty. My Caesar salad was meh. I got one of house cocktails and it was good if not a bit on sweet side. Not much alcohol in it so for some that's good and others wouldn't like that. Happy hour was on, so I was able to get a great glass of red wine at a slightly reduced rate. My husband got a happy hour beer. We also ordered their happy hour pretzels, which were less pretzels than underbaked dinner rools? Definitely wouldn't order them again myself, but my husband (who likes doughy, underbaked things) liked them. An okay place for happy hour. Grand Center is no longer just about seeing ticketed events! There's finally a great place to just go and hang out, thanks to the Dark Room, a new wine bar/gallery space. The decor is sleek and minimal, with dim lighting. There's plenty of different seating options as well as outdoor tables. There's a solid wine selection as well as some interesting bottled beers, like Perennial Mint Chocolate Stout. If you want a real tasty white wine, check out one called "The Derivative" ($50/bottle). It definitely left an impression on me. There's also a decent food selection, with small bites and more substantial offerings. Definitely try the thyme-cheese gruyers ($6). They are little bready snacks slighly bigger than a quarter, but they pack some serious flavor. These are probably the ideal snack to accompany a glass of wine. Other snack options include chocolate-covered grapes and mixed nuts. I tried the smoked salmon bruschetta ($12) and I was pretty impressed. 3 healthy pieces of toast covered w/ cream cheese & smoked salmon, each topped with a dollop of caviar. It was damn tasty and the caviar added a savory kick. There were some interesting flatbread & meat/cheese plate options as well. Another cool aspect of the Dark Room is the music. Come in on the weekend and you are likely to hear some talented DJs and musicians. The owner of the place is connected with the local scene and has a great ear. There is also always cool revolving artwork being displayed in a gallery space. Sip on some wine, check out some art and groove to some great music. It doesn't get much better than that... Saturday night we went in without reservations and were lucky to get the last two seats in the room. It's a small place and that night they were going to have live music. If there is something going on at the Fox, make reservations. We started with the artisan mix board. What a great start. Meat, cheese, raspberries and purple grapes. Nuts, olives, pickles and served with crostini. Best cheese and meat board I've ever had and well worth the money. He ordered the curry vegetables and I ordered the lamb meatballs. This is for: the new location and brunch (NO BRUNCH ON SATURDAY-BOOO) I had previously been to the location on Grand and enjoyed it. I assumed they had closed down but was happy to see they moved into the Grandel. A friend and I finally made it over there for brunch on a Sunday before a show at the Marcelle. We had a reservation which probably wasn't necessary, but there wasn't a Fox show that afternoon. Otherwise, it may be. The live jazz was going on, which was great. The bar is beautiful, with double sides, and then there's tables near the music stage. The menu is precisely what I want on my brunch menu. And the mimosas, Bellinis, and limencello drinks were $9 BOGO FREE until 1, but they honored it for us at 1:30! They have other brunch cocktails as well, including booze coffees (although day they were out of Kahlua for these). I had the prosciutto and egg flat bread while my friend had the one remaining stuffed avocado and we were both super satisfied with the choices. The cooked tomato on the salads were ahhhmazing. Service was perfect and the owner/manager greeted us while we were there. Given the menu, ambiance and location, I will be back many times. This is a new wine bar on Grand between the symphony and the Fox theater. Its an interesting concept bar, they sell wine and beer and it's also a dedicated photography gallery. They have a menu of snacks and light foods that go well with the drinks and a large communal table that encourages conversation about the surrounding art. Its a place you go to before or after the evenings events and its quiet enough to have an actual conversation. I thought it a refreshing new idea for STL. read more

We were sat at awkward seating next to the kitchen area but no biggie. James Biko was on the music which was amazing. Everything was excellent. The prices here are not inexpensive, as this is an upscale wine bar establishment in a not-for-profit theater and arts building. We had a group of 6 for an out of town friends bday. We selected this place for the live music . They advertised the first artist performance from 7-9 but she abruptly ended at about 740 ( she said she was going on a break then changed her story after the manager approached her) which was a bummer because she was awesome. The Dark Room is just outside in the lobby area of a larger theater. The show we saw was free. They offer a full bar and a full menu. If you're curious about who is playing, I would check their website as some artists are very popular and you need to make reservations. We just got appetizers. Went to The Dark Room after The Fox, the bar was not busy, with maybe 15 people, my partner sat down at the bar while I used the restroom. Upon returning to the bar I had asked if the drinks had been ordered, he said no one had waited on him yet. I looked across the bar and saw that the folks that came in behind us were served. The bartender looked at us several times but never gave us as much as a nod to acknowledge us. Went here the other day to link with friends, and really enjoyed the vibe. Very intimate setting, and dimly lit as the name suggests. During the course of the night they had both a dj and a live band, and live music is always a favorite. We enjoyed the drinks, the Long Island being a hit for sure.
