If you love beer you definitely need to go here. The Davis Beer Shoppe has an incredible selection of beers. The shop itself is not very large, but they do a lot with the space they have. The staff wears nice collared shirts and ties and, that in itself does a lot to add to the atmosphere. Barrels for tables and other beer paraphernalia on the walls makes this a great place to enjoy a quality beer. The imported beer selection was impressive, and they also carry a wide variety of rare and random microbrews. If you can't find it at Bev Mo or Total Wine, check the Davis Beer Shoppe, you might be surprised. Amazing beers on tap and even more amazing beers in bottles. This place was great! I'm not a huge beer aficionado (I actually know next to nothing about it), but I still enjoyed myself. Four of us did the tasting flight on a Wednesday night....5 4oz. pours for around $7/person (price varies depending upon what the beers are). The people working there were really nice and receptive of questions, and I can see this being a really fun thing to do in a group. My only complaint is that it is WAY too small in there. We had to stand around awkwardly with our beers for about 15 minutes giving stragglers death stares until they finally vacated their table. Nothing is more beautiful than a dedicated store for beer! Although this establishment isn't super big, there's a fairly good selection of beer inside. I purchased a few beers for friends including a Marin Brewing Company beer, a JK hard cider, and the Yulesmith brew from San Diego based Alesmith. The decor is very basic with the store/refrigeration area in the back and the "bar" area in the front. Initially, I had no idea how the beer was organized...whether by type or name, but either way, just the exploration of the different types there made it an enjoyable experience. I came to try this place with a group of girlfriends on a Saturday afternoon and it was pretty fun! We tried the sampler of five different beers. The place was pretty packed, but not loud or overwhelming. There was a huge selection for beer. I'm not a really big beer drinker, but the ones we tried were pretty good! The service is good too. I'd definitely go back to try the other beers. You have to be 21 to be in the shop though... people under 21 can't even sit at the tables. read more

This is a really nice place to go for an afternoon beer or cider. The vibe is like a more intimate deVeers. Beer Shoppe usually has something for everyone, and at reasonable prices, too. The window seats are my absolute favorite, but they go quick. It's hard to find seating at night during the alcohol weekend (Thursday - Saturday), but on other nights, you can usually snag a table. It'd be cool if they had a snack vending machine, or more varieties of crisps, but I'm not really complaining. They don't have much space for food prep. The servers know their stuff and are incredibly friendly and helpful so if you need some guidance on finding the right one for you, shoot them a couple questions and they'd be happy to help you. The service here is great, the beer is plentiful, and the prices won't break the bank. One downside to this place--it's too small! It's always so crowded that sometimes it's even hard to find a place to stand by the counter, let alone a place to sit. Can't complain too much though! Came here with a few friends on a Thursday night. Most of their beers are from tap (I love it!) and the price isn't too bad. I believe it was around $8. The bartenders are really knowledgable about their beers. They're also very friendly, so don't be afraid to ask questions. None of our girls knew what they wanted and the bartender was more than happy to help. Out of five girls, four of the girls liked what they ordered (not bad!). They also had a wide selection; there is at least a beer if not two for every personality. :P This place was really busy and I love the atmosphere. It's perfect for a small college town. The only con about this place is that it's a tad small, and there were not enough seats for everyone. read more

I'm leaning towards a 3.5 star rating, but I'll be generous and round up. This is a pretty good place to buy beer. Their selection is varied and stocked with a decent selection of local California beers as well as out of state. Maybe I'm just spoiled having come from San Diego, but I expected a wider array of rarer beers. Yes, they do indeed have some unique/hard to come by ones, but it just feels like something is missing. Still for the area this is about as good as you're going to find. The prices are reasonable as well. Didn't really stay to drink beer, but I hear it gets crazy crowded. I read someone else's review and I think they summed it up best as, "A great place to buy beer, but not an outstanding one." Still if I was in the area I'd check it out again. This place is a godsend - and wonder. They've got a rotating set of (5/6) taps, always with very interesting beers - whether you're a hop-head, a Belgian-lover, or a stout/brown ale style person. The prices are also extremely reasonable (from $3.50 on up), so there's always something to choose from at your price range. The owner Taylor and his wife are very friendly and accomodating - remember he actually *wanted* me to try a beer, because he thought it was interesting and wanted to share it. It's the kind of place that makes you want to frequent it and make it successful. Oh, and they've got great prices on beer to go. Not overcrowded like many places can get most of the time, and it's great they allow you to bring food in, since they don't have any hot food items themselves. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because there is a huge lack of seating (10-20 person seating, only a handful more standing space) so the competition for seats and even entrance can get annoying at times. This place is saturated in hipster-trendiness--in a fun way. Firstly, it spells shop as "shoppe". Secondly, its layout is not user friendly, which allows locals to scoff at confused out-of-towners who do a kind of huddle by the front entrance. You get that hipster rush as you flip your hair at the front door and saunter straight to the back. If you haven't figured out what beer you want prior to entering the shoppe, you will spend a while trying to figure out what to buy. There is a huge selection of beers here. I doubt the average customer has heard of many of these labels, much less has tasted many of these beers. **Word to the wise: do not bring indecisive people here! It is painful waiting around for people to make up their minds when you are surrounded by walls of beer. They do have some beers on tap and your indecisive buddies will probably sample them. There is often a lack of seating, but you can always stand and lean against the counter with your expensive local craft IPA like a hipster boss. read more

This place is great for both socializing and for getting work done. I know, it may sound strange, but I have found that Beer Shoppe is a great place to work on your laptop with a beer in hand, especially if you go there earlier in the afternoon/ evening. The staff here is super friendly, and will help you find a beer on tap that you will like even if you don't know much about beer. I had one of their samplers, and it was pretty cheap and I had fun trying out several different brands of one type of beer (on that day, they were serving belgian ales). My friend, who was with me, only likes one type of beer, Guiness, and they were able to help her find a beer on tap that was similar to Guiness but even better. This place is great for working if you don't mind a bit of background noise, but I noticed around 9 or so this place becomes more of a socializing bar. I think it's great that you can come here for both depending on whether you just want to enjoy a beer quietly and work on your laptop, hang out with one friend, or come here with a group. I haven't checked out any of the beer they have in the shop part, but I like that you can also buy a selection of beers from there and drink them in the store in addition to all the beers they have on tap. Also, they let you bring in food from outside since they don't serve food, so you can bring in your own food and wash it down with their beer. It's great! read more

I love this place. On a recent post-grad trip back to Davis I made sure we stopped by here not only for the memories but the crazy good selection of beer, both for there and to go. They have great prices and once again a great selection. There are some beers on tap but if you want anything from the bottle, they have plenty to choose from and if it's warm, they will even cool it down for you. But you should try the sampler! There is a new one everyday and it's pretty inexpensive and fun. The people who work there are very helpful and knowledgeable. While they don't have food, outside food is welcome. The only bad thing is how crowded it can get, but if you stick around then a table usually opens up quickly. read more

Worst first experience I've ever encountered when ordering alcoholic beverages. Walked in, told the workers it was my first time at the Beer Shoppe hoping they would guide me to a good beer, but instead they seemed annoyed, staring at me for the longest while I was reading the menu, and did not provide me with any help. When I told him the type of beers I liked, he gave me a sample without explaining what was in it, made no eye contact and just sled the sampler over to my hands, and didn't even tell me the name of the beer. Second time, hoping he'll provide like ABV content or where it came from, yet nothing. Luckily, another worker came and helped us but she didn't seem to know what beers were what. When I asked her if it's hoppy she didn't really answer it. Overall, my first experience here was completely a disappointment because I enjoy drinking beers and felt that this place neglected me as a customer and treated me like I didn't know anything about beers. read more

Davis Beer Shoppe is the perfect post-i-had-a-long-day-at-work-and-i-just-wanna-sip-on-a-drink-with-my-friends joint. They have a vast variety of beers and ciders to choose from for people that enjoy the dark and dirtayy and for those that can't handle their drank. For around 6 to 7 bucks you can get a flight of beer to taste which includes 5 4oz(?) tastings of different flavors that they're currently showcasing. You can also order beers on tap and they'll let you sample them if you're not sure what you want to order. The staff here are really helpful and are very quick to come around and clean up your table when you've emptied your glasses. I love the decor of this place- it has an old school kinda feel to it which i absolutely adore. The only downside of this place is that it's very small which limits the amount of people that can be in at one time. It gets crowded fairly often so don't be surprised if you have to wait outside for a bit before you get to go in. Besides that, Davis Beer Shoppe is a great place to go check out. Poor service. BE CAREFUL IF YOU HAVE AN OUT-OF-STATE LICENSE. Wish we could've tried some of the beers we tried to buy here, they had a nice selection. Unfortunately, however, it seems that this place doesn't train their employees to recognize out-of-state driver licenses promptly enough to keep up with changes. After spending about an hour here enjoying the selection we picked about $50 of beer to take back with us to AZ. At checkout the cashier/bartender asked to see IDs for both my husband and I. Then she spent a really long time looking at them and bending them. She apologized because she didn't recognize them. Then she pulled out a book (presumably a catalog of what a legitimate DL for every state should look like), but in the end she refused to sell to us and said that if we wanted to buy we'd have to wait an hour for her manager to get there. She didn't even offer to call her manager or try to look up what an appropriate AZ license should look like on the internet. She ended up calling her manager (after we asked) and I guess they were too busy to explain to her what she should look for. It just baffles me that between herself, her manager and modern technology they were unable to figure out what she should look for. AZ is one state away and updated their licenses in JUNE 2014-- 10 MONTHS AGO. Are you kidding me?? You don't update your catalog or train your employees on changes that happened 10 months ago? You couldn't look up anything online or take a picture of it or review it over skype with your manager or scan the barcode on the back of the license?? I can't be believe we wasted so much time here for nothing. I guess the only upside is that my husband and I must look like we're 10 years too young. Horrible service. read more

I spent a lot of money here while I still lived in Davis (read: I came here once a week, every week for the end of spring/all of summer 2013). Atmosphere is generally friendly, decor is charming (though their Americana posters clash with their loud rock music and the sports they play on their two large screen TV's), bartenders are knowledgeable and actually enjoy beer. I can always depend on a good recommendation about what's on tap from their bartenders. It can get really loud and crowded on busy nights, i.e. Thurs - Sat. I generally enjoy my experiences here, apart from the occasional annoyance of not being able to find ample seating because it's too crowded (or worst: waiting outside in the cold because they've reached maximum capacity... unless the bartender/bouncer is nice and you and your amig@s can strike up a conversation :) They have a great selection in the back. Best: they sell Crabbie's ginger beer! (cue memories in Scotland!) De Vere's will sell you Crabbie's too, but it's cheaper if you buy it from DBS (bartenders are also nicer at DBS... except this one blonde chick who was really rude and snobby about beer. She also can't pour as she always gives me foam, wtf. That's why -1 star). They also allow outside food, which is great! Unless you're having a crunchy banh mi sandwich from Sunrise, it's the afternoon (and you're there for a beer), and it's empty and kind of quiet... Pro tip: after you finish drinking your beer at DBS, walk over to Taquiera El Burrito and feast on some nachos. The beer and cheesy nomz + good vibes will make for a very good night.
