I had been eagerly waiting to try this place since they opened, despite only mediocre reviews as a friend of mine raved about the new ownership (though she has never eaten there). So my husband and I went last Wednesday night, figuring that by 8:00 we would be able to get a table fairly quickly. The first thing we noticed was a very large area of seating and a bar, which was completely empty; we found that strange since the parking lot was pretty full. The hostess explained that the area we were seeing was for drinks and appetizers ONLY. Full meals (dinner and lunch) were only served on the other side. Apparently there is a sign stating this fact, I just didn't see it. She led us through the empty area to the "other side" where there are a few umbrella'd tables and a counter that runs along the entire deck (facing the water) crammed with stools. It was after 8:30 on a Wednesday (last dinner orders go in at 9pm) so most people were finishing up or leaving and there was an open table right in the middle and yet she wanted to seat us on stools at the counter area smooshed in between other people. We asked to be seated at the table and she reluctantly agreed. We waited about 10 minutes for anyone to acknowledge our existence and when the young waitress finally came over, she did not mention anything about specials. In fact, we didn't even know there were appetizers because they are not on the menu (they're on a little slip of paper on the table which we thought was a drink menu). I do not eat meat or dairy so i ordered the "I hope we never meat" burger and my husband ordered the fried clam plate with onion rings. We waited a very long time for our food and when it arrived, I looked down at my meal and saw mounds of what looked like goat cheese on top of what I think was caramelized onions. I pointed it out to our waitress and she told me that my selection came with cheese, to which I told her it did not. She checked the menu to confirm I was correct, apologized, and took it back to the kitchen. My husband was about 3/4 finished when she returned with my food, described as a quinoa-root vegetable-mushroom burger but all I saw was quinoa mush. It was not at all tasty. My husband said his clams were the worst he had ever had and couldn't even eat half of them. (He thinks they were most definitely frozen) On a positive note, the fries and onion rings were excellent! The onion rings are the stringy, hand breaded kind - not the thick beer battered ones, which we really like. After our waitress cleared our plates, it occurred to me that there is a burger on the menu called "the tipsy gardener" which is a beef burger topped with caramelized shallots and goat cheese so I am thinking that maybe our waitress told the cook she wanted a "veggie burger". A totally honest mistake since that's what most restaurants call a non-meat burger. Who creates a menu with a beef burger with the word Gardener it it??? Anyway - overall, super disappointing. Our waitress was actually quite sweet despite the service being incredibly slow. But the food, the atmosphere, the layout, and the overall experience was very crappy. The view from the deck restaurant is just pure summer and the waitstaff was attentive and charming. I loved my selection of the fish tacos paired with a perfect patron margarita. There was a fantastic live bald playing on the upper bar deck, I investigated and danced my feet off! Can't wait to go back. OKAY Octavius is doing another local restaurant (to my home) review. The Deck. Octavius loves The Deck. There was a fire there a couple years ago and it was rebuilt into a seasonal 2 story restaurant/bar right on the Merrimack River over looking downtown Newburyport. The decor, set up and atmosphere is awesome. Of course, I would only go there on a nice day because it is outside and it may even be closed when rainy. Call ahead. The downstairs is the restaurant and upstairs is for only 21 and older. The staff is great and the drinks are the best around. A really fun place to go! The food ... it does have a limited menu but what it has is pretty good. I haven't been disappointed yet and I've been there maybe a dozen times. I've had the fried scallops, which were tasty albeit a small portion for 28 bucks, the burger, good burger with sweet potato fries, and they have an interesting chicken sandwich which is my go to. And the folks I have been there with have had other items and all were satisfied. So go to the deck. Have fun and enjoy. Oh yeah, great people watching too. read more

Went here on a summer night and it was busy busy as you would expect. My mojito was perfect, crisp and fresh with real ingredients, the way it should be done. I had the crab cake sandwich which was seasoned just right and the mango topping made it perfect. Other dishes at the table were fish and chips, veggie burger with mushrooms. I was told the mushrooms were delicious and the veggies burger wasn't all dried and freezer burnt like you get at some places. My husband and I took my mother in law here for lunch yesterday. It was our first time back since last summer, and I'm sorry to say I don't think we'll be returning. We enjoyed it very much when we went last year, but they've gone downhill. Their draft beer list was very limited from what it was last summer, which was disappointing. We ordered the mussels as an appetizer, which were delicious, but no more than a few minutes after our mussels arrived, our entrees were set down in front of us, which felt very rushed. We also never received plates with our appetizer, and I had to use a napkin until we finally flagged down our waitress to ask for appetizer plates. She was nice, but never really came back to check on us. Because of this, we eventually resorted to using tissues I had in my purse as napkins, as we desperately needed more napkins (mainly because we had to use them as plates when our mussels came) and no one ever came to check on us during our meal. We got to-go boxes after we finished eating, which a bus boy came and brought us, and proceeded to awkwardly stand there and wait for us to hurriedly shovel our food into the containers so he could take the plates away. It was terribly busy, so I very much felt like they wanted us out as soon as possible. When all was said and done, with tip (which I don't feel the waitress earned), we spent $127, so I did not appreciate feeling ushered about like cattle. Our food was also sub-par. My husband's clams did not taste right - I spit mine out when I tried one. They definitely weren't fresh. My mother in law enjoyed her haddock, and the salmon on my salad was okay. Definitely not a $127 meal considering part of what we received was not fresh, and we were rushed and not given things such as plates and napkins. The view is gorgeous and we were looking forward to sitting outside for a while to relax, have a beer and enjoy the view, but my husband and I ended up pounding what remained of our drinks since the bus boys/food runners made it clear they wanted to get the table cleaned off for the next customers. Even just for drinks and appetizers, I don't think we'll be back. Also, it's worth noting that parking is a nightmare. You're better off to go over the bridge to Newburyport for equally beautiful views, and much higher-quality dining options. read more

So I did the cheese burger and beer challenge. Two cheese burgers ordered medium (and beer) three days apart one at the Deck, one at the Black Cow. It was no contest. The Deck is far superior. The burger at the Deck was cooked perfectly, had several fresh bun selections and extras (mushrooms gruyere and aioli) very jucy and yasty. The burger at the Cow was cooked VERY well done making it rather dry with less taste. The fries at both places where good. The service and beer selection at both places was excellent. Chelsea, my waitress at the Black Cow was very good. She reported the issue to the manager who apologized and took half the price off the burger. The burger at the Deck was two bucks more but with the extras and the far superior food and preparation, it is well worth the short trip over the bridge. Two establishments with beautiful views of the river and port, on opposite sides of the river. With respect to this cheese burger challenge, they are on opposite sides of the food quality spectrum as well. read more

What started great.... Has taken a step back a little bit. When this place first opened it was awesome. Small little deck overlooking the beautiful town of Newburyport. My wife and I used to call it the best restaurant in Newburyport not in Newburyport. It was a very popular place and quickly outgrew it small original deck. Over the winter we were very excited to hear about the expansion plans and couldn't wait for the opening this May. The new deck is a great addition. They've divided it up into drinks and appetizers on one side, and full meals on the other. Good idea. They are still working out the kinks as it relates to logistics. We've been there four or five times already this year and everyone of those they've asked us to have drinks on the drink deck and pay for them there before moving to dinner. It seems that the one deck is not related to the other. A small annoyance but an annoyance nonetheless. (Another annoyance is its cash only. Really? It's time to enter the 21st century, take a small hit on your margin and allow other forms of payment). And they've changed the menu. Last years menu was much simpler and much better. (Channeling Nancy Kerrigan here - "Why!!!) I'm giving them three stars with the hope they can figure out the front of the room soon. read more

This is becoming one of my favorite restaurants to bring friends to! The view from the rail outdoors of the harbor is lovely and our servers are always friendly, helpful and attentive. These are the BEST sweet potato fries on the planet and the red Sangria is delicious. The calamari with sweet chili sauce is cooked to perfection and the shrimp tacos with pineapple salsa was the perfect balance of sweet and spicy! This was the ole fishtale breakfast place and its been completly remodeled. The View outside on "The Deck" is of the Merrimack River, several tables and chairs along the railing. From their drink selection, to the food, to the awesome staff, to the location.. all of it!! I just moved to the area and we've already been 3 times since they re-opened from covid. The caprese salad is probably the best I have ever had - and that's including the ones I've had at high end restaurants who make their own cheese. The drinks are killer!! I've had the one with watermelon and rosè vodka every time I've gone (ya I know, try something else right?! But why mess with perfection??) and after 2, I'm feeling great! My boyfriend swears by the rum buckets. Nothing and I mean nothing gets him drunk and after two of those, I'm driving us home! And they taste amazing!! Every time we've gone, the staff has been awesome, they're all so positive and treat you like they're your best friends. It's such a great environment!! Highly recommend! read more

They have done a great job with renovations after the fire. It seems there is a lot more tables, but also more space to move around. The menu seems to be more extensive as well. Food and service were both excellent. And honestly the view is compareable to the black cow and micheals. However their service and food is much better. I found prices to be appropriate for the quality of the food. I noticed a problem with what my credit card was charged a day after visiting. Management was quick with response and a resolution. This is a great casual restaurant for good food and drinks overlooking Newburyport and the Merrimac River. Nice selection of various foods on the menu. I ate lunch with a business associate there today. We had a calamari appetizer, both thought it was quite good with a nice presentation. I had the lobster cake appetizer with a side Cesar salad and it was a kicker! Good levels of rich taste and would definitely order both again. Britney (B Deck) waited on us. She was professional and engaging, pleasant and very knowledgable. I will surely be going back and next time taking my wife. Horrible experience. Waitress was rude, almost as if it was a racial thing (I'm Asian and my husband Latin). We were with American friends but she only seemed rude to me and my husband. My husband and I both ordered fish tacos because the menu was super limited for being a restaurant on the water. They gave us a one sheet flyer for a menu, I thought it was just a lunch or special menu but nope, it's that limited. My fish was very salty, I mean it was crusted in salt. I saw that my husband wasn't bothered by his dish so I thought that maybe I was being too sensitive to the salt, so I kept eating and analyzing. Ultimately I couldn't eat anymore, I just couldn't. Out of curiosity, I asked my husband to try mine and he was taken aback at how salty it was. He said his was not as bad as mine, it was saltier than he'd like but nothing alarming. So I definitely got the bad end of the seasoning. When we told the waitress she was pretty dismissive and said "oh, sorry..." but like well what do you want me to do kinda way. Wish I had remembered her name. Oh and not to mention we were there in the evening and as the sun went down, we were MAULED, completely mauled by mosquitoes. They were biting us everywhere even from underneath the mesh on the chair. They were hovering around us in our faces. I guess we sat near the marsh or something because we stayed at a local Airbnb down the street and didn't have any mosquito problems. Anyway, if you want to check out restaurants here Sea Level and Michael's are much better quality and have real a seafood menu on the water. The Deck is more like a porchside sit down for beer and drinks but don't come here if you're hungry. The service is horrible and even with the small menu the food in general was average at best. read more

So happy that the Deck has re-opened in their new format. We are local and have experienced the evolution of this property from its "best secrete breakfast" origin to its current phoenix. Free valet parking (with car awaiting if you give your parking tix to server with the check) is really nice. No reservations so expect a bit of a wait on weekends...especially in the summer. There is a easy waiting area connected to the bar with TVs- our 20min wait was closer to 10. The food was excellent. Started with hummus and had seared tuna (perfect cut w/ guac and wasabi) , Cuban,fish tacos and fresh caprese salad. NO LEFTOVERS- very rare with our family. We Loved it- know you will too! read more
